In connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segregate structures of the Widmansttten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith' the plane of segregation in the matrix contains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the 1iternture.l The increasing commercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this fundamental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys. Zinoeich Copper-zinc Alloys Copper enters into solid solution with zinc to at least 1.8 per cent at 400" C., according to W. M. Peirce.3 The solubility is less at lower temperatures. Thus a solid solution of copper in zinc, saturated at an elevated temperature, will precipitate the excess copper in a separate phase at a lower temperature, conditions of concentration, time, and temperature being suitable. The nature of these two phases has been established by the X-ray method of crystal analysis. Westgren and Phmgmén4 and also Owen and Preston5 have shown that the solid solution eta (7) is of the substitu-tional type with copper atoms replacing zinc atoms on the hexagonal

Ultramafic soils display high concentrations of nickel (Ni) and a number of nutrient deficiencies (e.g. N, K, P). Ni-hyperaccumulator plants have evolved on such environments, developed specific metal homeostasis showing concentrations of Ni sometimes above 1% in their aerial biomass (Baker & Brooks 1989). Alyssum murale, a Ni-hyperaccumulator, is commonly found around the Mediterranean but can grow on non-ultramafic soils as well, with an altitudinal extension ranging from sea level to 2000 m.a.s.l. Rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Ni-hyperaccumulator plants can differ from those of non-accumulating plants growing at the same site. Among edaphic factors that could influence the phylogenetic structure of the bacterial communities, altitude and metal-bioavailability and in particular nickel could be significant. However, most studies have focused on analyzing soils with techniques that provide little detail about the phylogenetic structure of these bacterial communities present in ultramafic soils. The objectives of this study were to understand the specific changes in the structure of A. murale rhizosphere bacterial community that occur across two gradients: 1°) elevation and 2°) Ni geochemistry, using pyrosequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene). It was found that the higher the soil chemically-available Ni contents, the higher the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. On the contrary, the abundance of TM7 decreased with increasing levels of available Ni. Moreover, Chloroflexi was present with 53 to 77% of relative abundance. These results demonstrate that soil chemically-available Ni drives the bacterial community diversity in the rhizosphere of Alyssum murale regardless the elevation gradient and other different soil physicochemical parameters. These results should now be confirmed in different ultramafic edaphic environments worldwide (e.g. ultramafic lateritic covers) and in the rhizosphere of different hyperaccumulator taxa.

The ESR of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy has been experimentally investigated. The remelting experiments have been carried out with different slag fluxes in the Cal, + Nal, CaF2 + ZrO2 and CaF2 + NaF + ZrO2 systems on an ESR furnace of 25kg capacity; using a water-cooled copper mould of 96.5 mm diameter, with the forged square bar electrodes of 50x50 mm2. The slag amount was taken to be 1.5 kg. The remelting current and voltage used were 1600-1800A and !5-25K, respectively. The influence of the slag composition on the stability of the remelting process and the losses of alloying elements (2r and Cr) has been considered and examined. The technologies of hot working and heat treatment of the ES ingot have been described and discussed. Some physical properties of the slag in a CuF2 + NaF + ZrO2 system and the remelted Cu-Cr-Zr alloy have been determined. The results indicated that with the slag flux of CaF2 + NaF + l0 mass % ZrO2 and the other operation parameters employed, a high quality ingot of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy may be obtained at the considerably high yields of Zr and Cr by means of ESR. For the remelted Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with a specified composition of 0.5 mass % Cr and 0.1 mass % Zr, the appropriate electrical conductivity, hardness and softening temperature are as high as 45-46S/m, HRB 82-84 and 550°C. respectively. The properties of the Cu-Cr-Zr alloy products are in accordance with and superior to the requirements and specifications of ISO5l82-l99l(E).

Yucca Mountain, located in Southern Nevada approximately 160 krn northwest of Las Vegas, is currently the site of intensive surfacebased and underground investigations. The investigations are required to determine if the site is suitable for long term isolation of the Nation's high level nuclear waste inventory. A major component of the program is the Exploratory Studies Facility, or ESF. The ESF, when completed, will consist of approximately 25,600 meters of tunnels and drifts. The network of tunnels and drifts (Figure 1) will house and support a wide array of testing programs conceived to provide physical information about the site. Information on geologic, geomechanical, and hydrologic data will be used in the repository design if the site is found suitable. Besides a few special requirements, the general ESF ventilation criteria during construction are similar to that of commercial tunneling and mining operations. The minimum air velocity at the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and other active mining faces is 0.51 meter per second (m/s) (100 feet per minute [fpm]). Airways, estimated leakages and ventilation controls are converted into equivalent resistances for input to mine ventilation network computer simulations. VNETPC Version 3.1 computer software is used to generate the ventilation models for optimized system design and component selection. Subsequently, actual performance of the ventilation system will be verified and validated to comply with applicable nuclear regulatory quality assurance requirements. Dust control in the ESF is dependent on effective dust collection, enclosure, and airflow dilution. Minimum use of water, as feasible, is necessary to avoid adding moisture to the potential repository horizon. The limitation of water use for test drilling and TBM operation, and the rigid compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, make the ESF a ventilation design challenge.

The allotropic volume changes of the ,metallic elements are reviezoed with the conclusion that in general atomic volume is conserved to better than 1 pct in such transformations. A table of the atomic volumes of the metallic elements is given and its use in considering the size factor in alloys is discussed. The importance of the concept of atomic-size factor, due to Hume-Rothery and coworkers,' is firmly established. Most attempts at quantitative formulations of this concept have employed the atomic radius (half some interatomic distance) as the measure of size and innumerable tables of such radii exist. This is probably, however, an unfortunate choice of parameter. Firstly, discussion in terms of interatomic distances requires a knowledge of the crystal structure. While this is known, except for a few cases, for the elemental structures, there are still many undetermined alloy structures. Secondly, except for the simpler structures, face-centered cubic (Al),* body-centered cubic (A2),* and hexagonal-close-packed (A3).* with ideal axial ratio, there is no unique in- teratomic distance, an m y decision must be made as to which distance, or which average of the distances, should be used. However, the most important point is that for metals the dominant bonding parameter can generally be expected to be atomic volume and not interatomic distance. This is perhaps most explicitly stated in the Wigner-Seitz cellular method.' In this approximation, cellular polyhedra of atomic volume v are replaced by spheres of radius Y,: 4/3 ?rs3 = v. That is, there is no reference to the interatomic distances. If atomic volume is in fact the dominant parameter, then in allotropic transformations we might expect to find atomic volume approximately conserved. For example, in the A1 ? A2 transformation we would thus have

THE following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 191.0. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years ; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C. Spencer 1 has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper on The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared.3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit and to call attention to its commercial importance. LOCATION. The Moa district is situated on the north coast of the . Province of Oriente, which is the most easterly province of the island of Cuba. For the past several months 1 have been considering the functions of this Society and its reasons for continuance. The fact that it is now sixty years old indicates that it must have been of value and we all know that it has contributed much that was worthwhile to Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces. The question arises: "What is the future of the Society, and how might its activities be altered to suit present-day activities and to be of even greater value?" Let us analyse the various activities in which we are interested and determine which, if any, are of more value than others. First of all, at least once a year we have a two-day convention which constitutes a holiday for the members and their wives. This has always been well planned and has been much enjoyed. Second, there are many social and business contacts made during the meetings and interim meetings. These certainly tend toward better relations and co-operation between the various people concerned. Mine operators meet other mine operators, engineers, people from the education fields, Department of Mines, and so forth. Various sales contacts are made at these meetings which can be of value and use to both the Company selling and the customer. Third, and of greatest importance in any conference, is the exchange of ideas by the members and by authorities from outside, and the presentation of slides and drawings, or actual visits to operations. It is upon this phase that 1 wish to elaborate. These papers are not only presented to our meetings but are generally published in the C.I.M. Bulletin so that members throughout the Dominion have access to them. Many important papers describing new phases of operations have originated through our Society.

The suggestion has often been made that it would be highly desirable, at least for certain grades of steel, to be able to control more certainly, by pyrometric measurement or otherwise, the temperatures of the operation of the open-hearth and other furnaces used in the manufacture of steel and iron. That the properties of the ingot and finally of the finished steel product are intimately related to the final temperatures attained by the metal in the furnace and to the temperature of casting, has been recognized by metallurgists for a long time, and this question has been very thoroughly treated, especially by Prof. Henry M. Howe, and by A. W. and H. Brearley.1 It is the object of this paper to demonstrate that in so far as casting temperatures of furnaces, steel ingots, and similar operations involving the temperatures of streams of iron and steel are concerned, well-known pyrometric methods may be easily applied—if certain recently determined corrections are made and precautions taken—with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Greater but not insurmountable difficulties will be encountered in the case of open-hearth furnace temperatures, while for those of the converter type a ready solution does not seem practicable. It appears that certain essential data have always been lacking in reporting observations such as those of Le Chatelier in 1892. Thus the correction to be applied for the characteristic radiation—or emissivity— has hitherto not been adequately taken into account nor the limitations of the several possible pyrometric methods clearly recognized. In view of the fact that in open-hearth practice the temperature to be measured in the furnace itself, in the stream of metal and slag and in the teeming into molds or ingots is usually above 1,500" C. (2,700" F.)

"THE REEVES MACDONALD mine is in the Sa Imo-Pend d'Oreille mining area of southeastern British Columbia. It is on the Nelway-Waneta road 4 miles west of the border-crossing point of Nelway. The Reeves orebody from which all production has come is one of several mineralized zones in easterly-striking limestones occurring between the Pend d'Oreille and the lower part of Salmo River.The property was originally located as two groups of claims by R. M, Reeves and J. H. McDonald. The two groups were consolidated in 1925. and extensive development work was done from then until 1930 and again in 1937, but no ore was shipped. The mine was reopened in 1947 and, between 1949 and 1953, 1,057,804 tons of ore was mined. Concentrates recovered contained 85,626 ounces of silver, 19,394,092 pounds of lead, 72,076,495 pounds of zinc, and 455,051 pounds of cadmium. Low metal prices forced the mine to close in 1953, but operations were resumed in November, 1955.The orebodies at the Reeves MacDonald mine are steeply plunging lead and zinc sulphide replacement deposits in a banded limestone named the Reeves limestone. The orebodies contain pyrite, honey-coloured sphalerite, and galena, and are surrounded by a dolomitized zone. In the Reeves orebody, where the relationships are known, the dolomite has the same general shape as the orebody. Four zones of sulphides are known on the property (see Figure 1). Three of these, the Reeves, B. L., and O'Donnell, are believed to be faulted segments of one mineralized zone. The fourth, the Point ore zone, exposed on the north bank of the Pend d'Oreille River, is not developed and its structural position is not known, but it appears to be a separate deposit."

The deductions drawn in crushing and grinding operations have heretofore been based on a separation of the products into various sizes. A crushed product may be sized by sieving, by elutriation and by aid of the microscope. To estimate the surface of each size the relation of the surface to the estimated average diameter must be assumed. Such a relation, owing to the irregularity of the particles, may involve two assumptions: First, a factor to convert average diameter to surface for one particular size; and second, a variation in the factor as the diameter of the particle changes. Obviously a surface measurement in which such assumptions and estimates are involved is questionable. In the first paper of this series1 a method has been given by which an accurate measure of surface of quartz can be obtained from its dissolution rate. By the use of this method, surface measurements have been made on a series of sieve sizes of crushed quartz, the results of which are given and discussed in this paper. Prepaeation of the Quartz Sizes The quartz, consisting of large uniform pieces with a density of 2.65 and a purity of 99.5 per cent. SiO2, was crushed to pass 20 mesh and was then sieved. Tyler standard sieves were used, the sieving being done by hand according to the proposed standard method submitted by the senior author to the Milling Committee of the A. I. M. E. A wet split of the sample was made on a 270-mesh sieve. This was followed by dry sieving until less than 0.05 per cent. of the weight of the sample passed through the sieve in 1-min. sieving. The +28-mesh material was discarded because that size did not contain the difficult grains from the 20-mesh sieve.

E. M. Fitchett (Johnstown, Pa.)—The fact stated by the authors that: "In the laboratory, without marked efficiency decreases, the authors have deposited zinc successfully from solutions containing as high as 1 g per liter of germanium," (p. 465, paragraph 3) is most unusual. A similar statement is made in the summary and conclusions: "Germanium alone, within normal operating limits does not cause large efficiency losses." The limits are not defined. These facts are directly contrary to much of the published history on the effect of germanium in zinc electrolysis. A description of the conditions leading to such a successful electrolysis would be of interest to all engaged in the production of electrolytic zinc. It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper did not determine the actual concentration of germanium and cadmium in the solutions which they electrolyzed after a zinc dust purification. This purification will take out a variable amount of these impurities, depending upon the composition of the dust, type of agitation, presence of activating agents, etc. Probably every electrolytic zinc plant in this country has accurate methods, both wet and spectrographic, for determining germanium and cadmium. These specific methods, adopted from the standard analytical literature, are often available to educational institutions for the asking. The headings of Fig. 2 and of the two tables, with their definite concentrations of germanium and cadmium (which are not so definite according to the footnotes) could possibly be somewhat misleading, since the actual amounts of germanium and cadmium present during electrolysis are not known. Even the 1 hr electrolysis time might be too short for a study of this type; 12 or 24 hr tests might be much better. Commercial solutions have been known that gave over 90 pct ampere efficiency during the first hour of electrolysis, but no metal at all after 24 hr.

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

"Mesoporous materials with large specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume have been widely used in many fields such as ion exchange, gas separation, adsorption, and catalysis. Mesoporous materials prepared using natural zeolite have the advantages of both acid and alkali resistance. In this work, mesoporous materials were prepared using natural zeolite as the starting material and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as a template. The resulting samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption-desorption experiments. The influence of the crystallization temperature and crystallization time on the specific surface area, pore volume, pore size, and morphology of the resulting mesoporous materials are also discussed. Our results show that for an increase in both the crystallization temperature and time, the average pore size first increases then decreases, while the specific surface area first decreases then increases. Based on this work, we concluded that the optimal crystallization temperature was 2003 and the optimal crystallization time was 60 h. These conditions gave an average pore size of 17.93 nm, a pore volume of 0.048 cm3g-1, and a specific surface area of 16.48 m2g-1.INTRODUCTIONMesoporous zeolite, as the name implies, is a highly porous crystalline zeolite. This material is of interest due to its high hydrothermal stability, its adsorption and diffusion properties for macromolecules, and its excellent selectivity and activity as a catalyst. In recent years, it has become a hot spot among research of porous catalytic materials and has been widely used in petroleum and natural gas processing, fine chemical processing, various adsorption and separation tasks, and other uses (Carvalho & Urquieta- Gonzalez, 2015; Teh, Triwahyono, Jalil, Mukti, Aziz, & Shishido, 2015)."

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE Ashio copper-mine of the Furukawa Mining Co. is situated 18 miles from Nikko, and 109 miles north of Tokyo, near the center of Japan. The mine-waters are run over scrap-iron, whereby most of the copper is precipitated as cement copper, leaving iron sulphate with some copper sulphate in solution. After using in the wet concentrating ore-dressing plant, the waste water contains clay and ore-slimes. The only avenue of disposal of this water is the Watarese river; but as this flows through valleys in which the water is used for irrigating the rice-crops, it is necessary to purify and clarify the water before discharge. The water amounts to from 600 to 700 cu. ft. (from 17 to 20 cu. m.) per minute, and averages about 0.00025 per cent. of copper, representing more than 18 tons of copper per month. The water carries H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe, (SO,),, CuSO4 and other metallic sulphates in solution, and clay, ore-fines, slimes and basic. iron sulphates as suspended matters. To purify and clarify the water, precipitation by milk of lime has been used, in three different ways, as follows: I. First Method, Copper not Recovered. Milk of lime was run into the water, and the mixture run through six settling-ponds, and then through a sand filter into the river. Fig. 1 is a view of the settling- and filtering-ponds. In the first pond, sand and metallic hydrates free from copper collected; in the next five ponds, slime, calcium sulphate, and metallic hydrates carrying copper settled out. The mining value chain plays an important role in our societal development. Even in a circular economy, mining and raw materials are in great demand, and so are skilled engineers. In Germany, many students decide to pursue STEM studies in the tertiary degree. Nevertheless, the OECD reports low completion rates in obtaining the degree of studies [1]. Generally, the dropout rates in STEM education are high [2]. Many students have difficulties with basic subjects such as science and mathematics, in which they lack knowledge they should have acquired in school [2]. With the German STE(A)M project PepperMINT (https://peppermint.thga.de/), the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA) offers a digital and open educational platform, as a dynamic, massive open, online course (MOOC) for students and prospective engineers. The project is funded by the RAG-Stiftung (RAG-Foundation; No. 20-0004). Using adaptable MOOC classes and applied examples from the wide-ranging cycle of mining activities, we motivate students to engage in STEM studies. Our adaptive and application-oriented content demonstrates the diversity of jobs and career paths in the mining industry. The integrations of applied examples and research activities of the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola can increase the curiosity and motivation of learners. In mathematics, mine-surveiying technologies and geomonitoring methods (see figure 1) can be used to teach trigonometry. Additionally the concept of the free open online classes enables students in high school to get insights into the field of engineering before they decide the subject of their studies. For freshmen who already decided to pursue a STEM degree, the PepperMINT courses can help to identify and close knowledge gaps and to align different levels of knowledge within a heterogeneous student body. Empowering students in STEM education and integrating examples from mining research can help us train the mining engineers of the future.

Freeport Minerals Co.'s Ertsberg East underground operation typifies the cliche that all the "easy" ore deposits have already been found. Despite its location, in a remote Indonesian rain forest, and the effort and expense required to develop the ore body, the mine was developed on schedule, under budget, and with minimal disruption of the adjacent open-pit mining operation. Development of the Ertsberg East copper, gold, and silver ore body took less than two years after exploration drilling and feasibility studies were completed. In addition, the project came in well under its targeted budget of $101.5 million. Initial block caving and underground ore production took place last year. About 3 kt/d of Ertsberg's total 8.6 kt/d ore production is currently mined underground. This will increase to 5.4 kt/d by year's end. Underground operations will eventually account for all of Ertsberg's production, as the open-pit ore body is depleted. Freeport Minerals is currently studying the possibility of increasing total Ertsberg East production tonnage to 10.5 kt/d by 1983. The equipment, work practices, and development methods at Ertsberg East (Gunung Bijih Timur or "GBT"), while typical of other block caving mines, were modified for rapid mine development and maximum ore recovery. Located in the Irian Jaya province, "Gunung Bijih" is the Indonesian expression for the Dutch "Ertsberg" that in English means "ore mountain." "Timur" means "east" and relates to the fact that the new underground ore body lies about 1 km east of the open pit. The area surrounding GBT is mountainous, with peaks from 4.2-5 km. The underground mine adit and surface plant are located at a 3.6-km elevation. The mine, 4° south of the equator, gets 5.1 m/a of rain, but has an average daily temperature of only 13°C because of the mine's elevation.

This report is based on experience developed on the construction of one contract for the Buffalo, New York subway. The Buffalo subway is under construction for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and is called the LRRT-Light Rail Rapid Transit or more commonly the Metro. The Initial Route of the Buffalo subway construction started early in 1979 and is scheduled for completion in May, 1984. The initial system includes 5.2 miles of underground construction, 1.3 miles at grade for a total of 6.5 miles of subway system. A total of fourteen stations, eight underground and six at grade are included on the system. The Initial Route has a planned expansion to 17.3 miles in the future. On January 15, 1979, a Joint Venture of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, James McHugh Construction Co., Chicago, Illinois, and Kenny Construction Company, Wheeling, Illinois, was awarded contract 100031, the Line Tunnels from Amherst Street to South Campus in northcentral Buffalo between Delaware Park and the State University, (see Fig. 1, Location Plan) This $35,000,000.00 contract was designed by Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Buffalo, N.Y. The Notice to Proceed was issued January 15, 1979 and the scheduled completion date is August 18, 1981. The project consists of two parallel rock tunnels with a minimum excavated diam of 18 ft 0 in. and a final concrete lining of 16 ft 0 in. diam. The tunnels total 14,630 linear ft. In addition to the tunnels, contract C-31 includes four shafts, an underground pump station, three cross passage connections, and other minor work items. "A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details:""The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all appearances, passed down the shaft caus¬ing disruptive discharges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, rending the latter at two places situated respectively .228 .feet and 278 feet from the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 5 feet 4 inches, indicating a spark gap ;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft.""The Compressed Air Magazine, January 1920 issue, which contained the above extract also goes on to state;""In 1915, M, Ferey described in a paper read before the Societe de l'Industrie Minerale phenomena of a similar character to the above.
