The utilisation of low-grade raw materials such as fine iron ore and semi-soft coking coal, and reduction of CO2 emissions are important issues in the ironmaking process. To solve these issues, a new process called PosPRA (POSCO prereduced agglomeration process) has been developing at POSCO. It focuses on the reduction of carbon composite iron ore briquette in travelling grate. In this study, the possibility of manufacturing the prereduced agglomerate (PRA) under oxidising atmosphere with travelling grate and the optimum manufacturing conditions of carbon composite iron ore briquette are investigated. The results have shown that controlling the temperature and oxygen potential in the range from 1100 to 1200°C and below 10 vol per cent respectively is very important to increase the reduction efficiency of briquette in travelling grate. High quality properties of the green briquette and PRA could be manufactured by using the briquette mixed with 20 wt per cent of coal under 0.1 mm in size under compacting pressure in the range from 3 to 7 t/cm. Adding 1 wt per cent water as a binder is proper under the condition of high compacting pressure. In a pot grate test, the compressive strength and metallisation degree of PRA are achieved over 150 kgf/p and about 55 per cent respectively, at bed temperature 1150°C and oxygen potential of 10 vol per cent when 20 wt per cent of coal is mixed in the briquette.CITATION:Wang, M K, Son, S H, Park, J I, Jeong, H K and Cho, B K, 2017. About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. Water sprays and water powered scrubbers have both been utilized in the mining and milling industry to suppress airborne dust. Unconfined water sprays operated at lower water pressures of ?689 kPa (?100 psig) can be very effective at wetting the mine product at the dust source and significantly reducing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. However, unconfined waters sprays can be somewhat ineffective in actually removing airborne dust from the air. On the other hand, water powered scrubbers operating at higher water pressures of ?1,724 kPa (?250 psig) in physical enclosures or ducts have previously been demonstrated to be very effective in removing airborne dust from the air. These higher operating water pressures are uncommon in many mines and mills, so their use is limited. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently investigated the performance of a lower-pressure, water powered inline series spray scrubber for removing localized airborne dust emitted at the source. Results showed noticeable improvements in airborne dust capture efficiency through the operation o f multiple inline series hollow cone spray nozzles within a round duct or pipe at the same water pressure as a single spray. Operating hollow cone spray(s) at higher water pressures noticeably improved airflow through the scrubber and yielded some additional scrubber efficiency improvements. Thus, in-line spray scrubber efficiency trade-offs were observed to be made by altering spray power components of water pressure and/or quantity (number of sprays). Results show that, on average, up to 0.23 and 0.32 m3/s (484 and 679 cu ft per min) of airflow at 0.81 and 0.69 dust capture efficiencies can be achieved with three 81° and 33°hollow cone inline series sprays, respectively, operating at 1,655 kPa (240 psig).

In recent investigations of the microstructure and crystallographic features of martensite by electgon microscopy,', '9 thin films (about 50 to l000A in thickness) have been used as specimens. It was found by W. Pitschl ,2 that the lattice relationships between the supefiaturated fcc matrix and the martensite formed in thin films were different from those observed after transformation in bulk material. Corresponding differences are to be expected in nucleation and in reaction kinetics in the formation of martensite in thin films, but have not yet been reported. In the course of the preparation of thin films of iron-base alloys for investigation by electron microscopy it was observed that films of alloys, whose martensite formation temperature (Ms) was below room temperature, formed martensite during the electrochemical thinning process conducted at or above room temperature. The chemical compositions and approximate bulkM,-temperatures of the three materials on which this observation was made are listed in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-melted from high-purity metals. It can be seen that the effect occurred in alloys that contain only sub-stitutional components as well as in alloys that contain carbon as an interstitial solute. The appearance of martensite formed in this manner is illustrated in Fig. 1, which represents a polished film of alloy No. 1 at XI0 magnification. The martensite plates can be recognized by their surface relief effects. In addition, heavily strained (owrinkledo) austenite can be seen near the edges of the film where it is thinnest and transformation stresses or strains can be accommodated by plastic deformation most easily. The nonuniform distribution of transformed regions is probably due to the varying thickness of the film. These observations were common to all materials listed in Table I. One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

"The Venturi-aerated flotation column (VAC) is based on a reactor and separator design for a new generation of flotation machines. The reactor is a Venturi tube, where the air/slurry contact takes place with intensive aeration for efficient particle collection. The separator is a column of 1-3 m length that provides quiescent hydrodynamic conditions for effective separation of bubble-particle aggregates from the remaining slurry.Aeration in the Venturi tube occurs via two mechanisms: air dispersion and nucleation (cavitation). By forcing air through a restricted passage with a fast flowing slurry stream, air is dispersed into fine bubbles. Bubble formation due to cavitation occurs on the surface of particles in the low-pressure section of the Venturi, from dissolved air contained in the liquid.Size-by-size recovery and flotation rate constants were determined for a small-scale laboratory Venturi-aerated flotation column. The results were compared to those obtained in a laboratory 2.2 L Denver cell. It is shown that the Venturi-aerated flotation column has slightly slower flotation kinetics to the Denver cell, but with much higher flotation selectivity. A portable Venturi-aerated flotation column can effectively be used to investigate process or equipment problems in operating plants.INTRODUCTIONFlotation processes can generally be divided into two sub-processes: 1) selective collection of hydrophobic particles by air bubbles and 2) separation of bubble-particle aggregates from hydrophilic particles that remain in the pulp. The methods of aeration, or bubble generation, control the mechanism of particle collection by either collision with, and subsequent attachment to bubbles, or by in situ bubble formation on the surfaces of hydrophobic particles. A flotation device should provide optimal aeration conditions for efficient particle collection and a suitable hydrodynamic environment for effective removal of bubble-particle aggregates from the remaining pulp."

"Adsorption of heavy metal ions specifically, Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution on synthetic 4A Zeolite was evaluated. The 4A zeolite was synthesized previously by dehydroxylation of low grade Kalabsha Kaolin at 800 °C, and reacted hydrothermally with 2-4 M NaOH solution at 100 °C for 2h. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions were found to be strongly dependent on pH and initial metal ion concentration. At the optimium conditions the adsorption capacity decreased in the order Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Cr(VI) ions. Almost complete adsorption was achieved for both of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions at pH > 6, while the adsorption capacity for both Mn(II) and Cr(VI) was 96, and 55.3 % at pH 11 and pH 3, respectively. The results also showed that the grain size of the 4A zeolite has a little effect on the adsorption capacity. The experimental data was compared with two adsorption isotherms, Langmuir and Freundlich isotheroms. The results showed a good agreement of the Langmuir plots with the experimental data.1. Heavy metals are considered hazardous pollutants due to their toxicity, even at low concentration, and nonbiodegradability. Increasing level of heavy metals in natural water bodies poses a serious threat to all living species including humans. It is, therefore, essential to reduce the heavy metal concentration in effluents/wastewater before it is discharged into the water bodies [1]."

"The Mount Tolman porphyry Mo-Cu deposit is 64 km south of Republic, Ferry County, Washington. It occurs in the composite Keller Butte pluton, which consists of the Keller Butte porphyritic biotite granite and granodiorite, the Mount Tolman quartz porphyry granite, and the Meadow Creek biotite granite phases. The three phases range in age from 61.3 Ma ± 2.3 Ma to 55.7 Ma ±2.0 Ma. The stockwork deposit occurs in the Keller Butte phase above the contact with the Mount Tolman quartz porphyry granite.Mount Tolman is a hybrid calc-alkaline deposit that has features of both a Climax-type and a plutonic type. Prior to post-ore faulting, the deposit had a flattened hood like shape. In plan it is elongated- 1.6 km wide, 3.2 km long, and up to 609 m thick. The orebody has a 292 o strike. It contains a geologic reserve exceeding 2.18 billion tonnes of ore averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09o/o Cu using a 0.048% MoS2 cutoff. Of this total, 816 million tonnes of measured and indicated ore averaging 0.097% MoS2 and 0.09o/o Cu could be mined by open pit with an overall waste-to-ore ratio of 0.91 to 1.The deposit is a stockwork of quartz and quartz-sericite-pyrite veins and fracture fillings that contain molybdenite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and magnetite. Five separate episodes of fracturing and mineralization produced the orebody and were followed by four additional episodes of fracturing with sulrgrade mineralization. The Mount Tolman deposit contains propylitic, argillic, phyllic, topaz greisen, and potassic alteration zones. Extensive silicification overlaps the K-feldspathized, quartz-topaz, and phyllic alteration zones."

Diesel particulate matter (D PM) samples from underground metal/nonmetal mines are collected on quartz fiber filters and measured for carbon content using National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Method 5040. If size-selective samplers are not used to collect D PM in the presence of car-bonaceous ore dust, both the ore dust and D PM will collect on the quartz filters, causing the carbon attributed to D PM to be artificially high. Because the D PM particle size is much smaller than that of mechanically generated mine dust aerosols, it can be separated from the larger mine dust aerosol by a single-stageimpacto1: The SKC D PM cassette is a single-stage impactor designed to collect only D PM aerosols in the presence of carbonaceous mine ore aerosols, which are commonly found in underground nonmetal mines. Howeve1: there is limited data on how efficiently the SKC D PM cassette can collect D PM in the presence of ore dust. In this study we investigated the ability of the SKC D PM cassette to collect D PM while segregating ore dust from the sample. We found that the SKC D PM cassette accurately collected D PM. In the presence of carbon-based ore aerosols having an average concentration of 8 mg/m3, no ore dust was detected on SKC D PM cassette filters. We did discover a problem: the surface areas of the D PM deposition SKC D PM cassettes, manufactured prior to August 2002were inconsistent. To correct this problem, SKC modified the cassette. The new cassette produced, with 99% confidence, a range of D PM deposit areas between 8.05 and 8.28 cm2, a difference of less than 3%.

Column flotation cells have been installed in numerous base metal operations around the world. The majority of these cells utilise conventional air-only spargers to introduce air into the bottom of the column. The recent development of instruments to measure the bubble characteristics in these columns has provided a renewed understanding of column behaviour. These new tools provided insight into why the columns at Red Dog Mine had never performed up to expectations. After efforts to optimise the spargers failed to substantially change the bubble size and air efficiency, alternate sparger systems were investigated. The Metso Minerals CISA Microcel sparger system appeared promising and was selected for a full-scale plant trial. The Microcel sparger system was originally developed for the coal industry at the Virginia Centre for Coal and Minerals Processing. In October 2003, a Microcel was retrofitted into one of two 3.66 m diameter flotation columns in the zinc retreat circuit at Red Dog Mine. The operation of the two different sparger systems in parallel allowed a detailed comparison. This paper discusses the performance of the Microcel based on the data collected during several detailed surveys. Bubble size measurements carried out in the pulp zone using the McGill University bubble viewer showed a significant difference in bubble size. The mean Sauter diameter of the bubbles decreased from 3.4 mm for the jetting-type sparger to 1.9 mm for the Microcel sparger. The overall recovery and the recovery by size fraction for both valuable and gangue minerals were compared. Paired t-tests demonstrated that the Microcel column produced a higher concentrate grade (0.6 per cent zinc absolute) and a higher unit recovery (2.8 per cent zinc absolute) than the existing Canadian Process Technologies Inc (CPT) SlamJet column. These improvements provided a payback period of 1.5 months for the $109 000 investment.

The effect of superficial gas rate distribution (Jg profile) on down-the-bank metallurgical response was tested in the rougher-scavenger bank (eight 10-m3 tank cells, 4 roughers and 4 scavengers) at Highland Valley Copper Mine's Cu/Mo separation circuit. Three Jg profiles were tested: (a) as found (i.e., typical practice), (b) increasing decreasing (i.e., increasing from cell 1 to 4 and decreasing from cell 5 to 8), and (c) decreasing-increasing (i.e., decreasing from cell 1 to 4 and increasing from cell 5 to 8). The Jg profile approach proved to be of considerable value. Profile (b) gave the best metallurgical results, i.e., the highest down-the-bank grade/recovery (increase in grade at constant recovery was approx. 3-4% compared to the as found case) and the most efficient Cu/Mo separation (cumulative Cu recovery was reduced by almost half - approx. from 20% to 12%, at 99% Mo recovery). The success of the evaluation prompted the implementation of profile (b). Detailed gas dispersion characterization tests (Jg and Db (bubble size)) showed significant discrepancies between the Jg measured directly (using the McGill University sensor) and the Jg calculated from field instrument readings (volumetric gas flowmeter) and machine dimensions (cell cross-sectional area). Tests were designed to reveal the source of disagreement. It was observed that a significant number of bubbles were not able to float (i.e., they were entrained with the tailings), the evidence appearing to be a significant number of very small bubbles (approx. 200-300 µm) which did not have sufficient buoyancy to rise. Consequently, rather than relying on the field instrument, the evaluation depended on the McGill University Jg sensor, which collects bubbles in a tube near the pulp-froth interface, thus providing significance to the data as the measurements were obtained from bubbles that almost certainly floated.

"Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal Private Limited proposed to construct a container terminal yard, comprising a back-up area at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT), Uran, Maharashtra. The proposed container terminal yard is located on a recent reclamation on the Thane Creek, which was developed by land-based reclamation method. The underneath soft marine clay was treated, using vertical band drains and placement of surcharge upon.Settlement of the reclamation during its construction was monitored using settlement plate installed at +4.8m CD elevation which was above the highest high water level.This paper examines the settlement behaviour of the reclamation during the ground improvement works. The geotechnical parameters are back-analyzed by the authors from the field settlement results and the concerned preloading details. The back analyzed coefficients of consolidation due to horizontal flow (Ch) are compared with laboratory determined parameters and the estimated value, using Asaoka Method (1978). The authors also studied field compression ratio [CR= Cc/(1+e0)] vs. the compression ratio determined by laboratory test using back-analysis method.1. The back-up area shall include a heavy duty block paved pavement with band beams for electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry Crane (eRTGC) alongwith surface water drainage system and other services including area lighting, provision of fire-fighting facilities , sources for potable water and power.Based on the Employer’s Requirement and the available geotechnical investigation report, ground improvement scheme is designed by the construction contractor. Ground improvement works included the installation of prefabricated vertical drains and subsequent placement of surcharge for accelerating the consolidation of the underlying soft marine clay."

McArthur River Mine is located approximately 50 km south-east of the NT township of Borroloola and approximately 120 km from the Gulf of Carpentaria. The mine hosts a series of layered shallow dipping tabular orebodies, with current reserves of approximately 22 Mt, grading 13.6 per cent zinc, 6.3 per cent lead and 65 g/t silver. Owing to economic considerations, the lower most orebody (No 2 orebody) has been selected for initial mine production. Following the completion of the No 2 orebody, mining will transfer to the lower grade and metallurgically more complex No 4 orebody. The mine employs a total of 235 people throughout the underground and surface areas. The majority of the workforce work a fly-in/fly-out, seven-day- on/seven- day- off roster with 12-hour shifts. Presently, a further 18 contractors are involved in trial mining areas. An apparent dip room and pillar technique has been selected as the primary mining method. Officially opened in September 1995, the current production rate of 1.2 Mt per annum will eventually escalate to 1.5 Mt per annum. Though most production is achieved through the use of conventional loaders, trucks and jumbos, the recent development of methods utilising scrapers, hand held machines and modified jumbos has produced encouraging results in steeper dipping areas of the mine. Initial production has been hindered by several factors including extensive and largely unpredictable faulting, worse than expected ground conditions and difficulties with some mining equipment. Compounded by the relatively thin 3 m ore seam, initial mining resulted in high dilution and poor production. This paper describes the development of unique planning and production systems that were evolved in order to overcome these problems and achieve the targeted production rates and head grade.

IN a preliminary paper (1) it was shown that the addition of small quantities of metallic aluminium powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of siliceous material in the beaker. Six rabbits exposed to quartz dust for six months all showed well developed silicosis. Seven rabbits exposed to quartz dust plus 1 per cent metallic aluminium powder for the same period did not develop silicosis. At that time, we were not in a position to state either the manner in which metallic aluminium reduced the solubility of siliceous material, or, from the animal experiments, whether the aluminium was acting locally or systemically, or for what period after the cessation of dusting it would continue to act. This paper reports the further progress of this investigation. CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTATION The technical details pertaining to the various substances used in the experiments are given in an appendix which is on deposit with the American Documentation Institute, Washington, D.C. For lack of space, it is not printed here. The term 'solubility' is used to indicate the concentration of silica in the solution under the conditions as noted, determined colorimetrically (2), and expressed as parts per million (p.p.m.). The term 'reduction in solubility' indicates the difference between the solubility of the .silica in the presence of the aluminium powder and its solubility in the absence of aluminium powder. It will be noted that the solubility figures for different samples of quartz with no added aluminium vary considerably. The figures do not refer to an equilibrium solubility of silica but to the actual amount of silica dissolved from a given sample in a given time at a given temperature. In view of the fact that quartz dissolves extremely slowly, it is evident that the actual figures in any case will depend upon the surface exposed, i.e., fineness of grinding of the different samples.

A rural mail route passes within quarter of a mile of the mine. Paved reads from Heflin lead to Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery. The country Toads leading from Heflin are well-maintained but are practically inaccessible during inclement weather. The road crossing the property within a hundred yards of the mine needs grading and repairing (see fig. 1)."

"The Athabasca Basin occupies about 100,000 km2 of the northwest corner of Saskatchewan with its western margin extending about 50 km into Alberta (Fig. 1). The basin is filled with a Helikian sequence of predominantly fluvial sandstones up to 1600 m thick. The sandstone beds are generally flat-lying, and rest unconformably on a crystalline basement which consists mostly of granitic intrusive complexes and quartzfeldspar- biotite gneisses. The basement rocks represent Aphebian sediments and Archaean basement rocks that were metamorphosed and remobilized to varying degrees during the Hudsonian Orogeny (ca 1800 Maj.Since 1968, three mining camps and several substantial unconformity-type uranium deposits have been discovered in the area (Figs. 1 and 2). These deposits lie along the unconformity surface, partially enclosed in sandstones, and partially in the basement rocks. The major deposits have elongate, pencil shaped orebodies that are parallel to the strike of underlying graphitic biotite gneisses. The total tonnage of uranium is in the order of 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes and mining grades range from 0.5 to 2.5 per cent U3O8.IntroductionUranium exploration started in Saskatchewan in 1945 when Jolliffe and Murphy headed field parties to investigate uranium occurrences on the north shore of Lake Athabasca (Kupsch, 1978). Their investigation lead to the development of the Beaverlodge camp in the following years. Some of the early prospectors were impressed by the fact that the uranium occurrences at Beaver lodge were centred on a thick sequence of unmetamorphosed arkosic redbeds which are now called the Martin Group. "Regeneration of HCl from chloride solutions is commercially practiced by high temperature (800-900 °C) pyrohydrolysis associated with high energy consumption and capital cost. As an alternative to pyrohydrolysis a novel low temperature ( <200 °C) non-autoclave hydrolytic process has been studied in this research work, which comprises two steps. In the first step, ferrous chloride is oxidized by oxygen at 1;150 °C, followed by hydrolytic decomposition of ferric chloride to coarse hematite particles and superazeotropic hydrochloric acid (8-9M) operated at approximately 180 °C. This paper provides a summary of the laboratory results related to both oxidation and hydrolysis and presents a newly designed conceptual process flowsheet.IntroductionRecovery of base, noble and rare metals from ores and secondary materials (slags, dusts, residues) by chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes holds a lot of promise if a low cost HCl process becomes available. This is particularly so due to the high activity of HCl or more accurately activity of hydrogen ion [1] in concentrated chloride media and the formation of chlorocomplexes allowing for effective leaching under atmospheric leaching conditions and simultaneous ease of metal separation. However, during leaching significant amount of iron, which is associated with most of ores and secondary materials, goes into the solution. Hence, the obtained leach solution has to be treated to convert iron chlorides into easily filterable iron oxide and simultaneously produce concentrated hydrochloric acid. Apparently the critical operation of these processes is the regeneration of the lixiviant (HCl). Currently in the industry, its regeneration is accomplished by high capital and intensive pyrohydrolysis which operates at 700- 900 °C. Aimed at lowering the operational cost of pyrohydrolysis a process called PORI [2] was developed and tested in pilot plant scale in the 1970s for the purpose of treatment of pickle liquors without, however, resulting in industrial application."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands and under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay (Figure 1).The POMT was a unique project which embodied many technical firsts and involved the first large diameter tunnels constructed through Florida’s challenging sedimentary carbonate strata. At the outset, a comprehensive ground investigation was performed, using both conventional and less conventional investigation techniques, to characterise the highly heterogeneous ground conditions.The findings of the investigation had a major impact on the tunnelling methods, triggering a series of mitigation works to ensure that the tunnels could be excavated safely and effectively. The mitigations included modifications to the already designed Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), to facilitate an innovative excavation process, and a unique grouting campaign (Storry et. al. 2013a). The project was completed and opened to traffic in August, 2014 and has significantly alleviated traffic congestion in Downtown Miami.GEOLOGICAL CONTEXTThe geological conditions at the project site consist of carbonate sediments which can be divided into distinct geologic units; the Miami Limestone Formation (Layers S3, S4), the Fort Thompson Formation (Layer S5), the Anastasia Formation (Layer S6), the Key Largo Formation (Layer S7) and the Tamiami Formation (Layer S8). Multiple changes in sea level over a relatively short geologic time scale have resulted in a heterogeneous profile consisting of interbedded sedimentary rocks and sediments, which vary widely, both vertically and laterally (Figure 2)."

A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. "The conditions under which rocks become superficially damaged during the grinding process are not well understood. The main purpose of the work presented here is to understand how superficial breakage occurs under incremental low-energy impacts. To enable this study a series of abrasion tests with multi-size pilot mills have been performed. Outcomes of numerical simulation corresponding to each test were examined to investigate the experimental results. Abrasion tests have been conducted using three grinding mill sizes (i.e. 1.8, 1.2, and 0.8 m). Two types of ore were used to investigate different hardness strengths. To ensure abrasion was the dominant mechanism, in all tests the mill speed was reduced to 40% of critical speed. The relationship between the Fractional mass loss rate and particle size was investigated by randomly collecting seven tracer particles from sizes -73+63, -53+45, and -37.5+31.5 mm. It was evident from the results that the Fractional mass loss rate of angular particles declines as the particle size increases whereas the Fractional mass loss rate decreases from fine to coarse in rounded particles. Results of Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations indicate that fine particles experience higher levels of collision energy per particle and this value reduces as the particle size increases and mill size reduces. This explains the higher Fractional mass loss rate of smaller particles as well as the increase in the Fractional mass loss rate as the mill size increases. Linked DEM and experimental data indicates that under these test conditions surface damage attrition is the dominant mechanism. This work suggests that DEM simulation can be implemented to predict the abrasion wear of particles in mills."
