"This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. Circuits with unconventional and potentially more complex designs are predicted to become more common in the future as plant designers and operators look to process ores more efficiently. Ideas have been presented on how circuit design may be changed to utilise todayÆs technology to address tomorrowÆs challenges (Powell and Bye, 2009; Powell, Benzer and Mainza, 2011a). High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) installations in various configurations; application of preconcentration plants eg sorting, magnetic or gravity separation; and preweakening devices eg microwave processing; are all examples of technologies having the potential to deliver a significant reduction in comminution energy for ores amenable to these processes. Not only will future novel circuits contain equipment for which models are not as well developed (if at all), many will likely require the ability to respond to variations in feed, and interact with geometallurgical models requiring process adjustments when the ore characteristics change.In order to confidently simulate more complex circuits and accommodate variations in feed type, a significant advancement in modelling and simulation capability is required. This includes dealing with multiple components in the feed, accommodating different competencies of ore, utilising physical separation opportunities and tracking the grade reporting along the different potential processing routes. Developing the means to simulate complex circuits has been a key priority of a collaborative group of comminution researchers working to solve these challenges.Simulations are presented utilising a new configurable simulation interface called the model developers kit (MDK). The MDK is designed to accommodate multi-components and incorporate new models under development. "In 2012, Golder Construction Inc. was awarded a Design-Build contract for the design and construction of an extensive, deep ground improvement scheme to support up to 20 metres (66 ft) high Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls and bulk earthworks required for the development of the proposed Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Bish Cove, British Columbia (BC). Utilizing Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to construct barrettes consisting of overlapping rectangular panels of in-situ cement-treated soils, a deep mixing scheme, covering an area of approximately 12,900 m2 (15,430 yd2) and comprising some 1645 CSM panels to depths of up to 30.7 m (101 ft), was developed to provide the required static and seismic stability for the LNG structures, and meet the project-specific performance criteria.CSM panels were constructed through varying thicknesses and discontinuous layers of fine-grained, very soft to soft marine deposits, and loose to compact sands, with occasional interbeds of dense sands and gravels. Panel completion criteria was based on soil response factors, as measured by the CSM equipment, with the design requiring a typical embedment of about 2 m (7 ft) into dense silty sand to sand and gravel to provide the required bearing. A total volume of approximately 73,900 m3 (96,660 yd3) of soil was treated with cement to consistently yield average unconfined compressive strengths exceeding 2.5 MPa (363 psi).This paper outlines the challenges associated with the construction and quality control of this large deep mixing scheme in highly variable geotechnical conditions at a remote location with barge-only access, and limited communication facilities. Specifically the paper will discuss the logistical challenges faced and solutions adopted for the project; equipment redundancy requirements for a 24/7 operation; the impacts of wear and tear, as well as variability in subsurface conditions on productivity; quality control processes adopted for the project, including the value of provision of an on-site laboratory; and materials handling issues, and their impacts on mix design and quality control."

"When completed, 520 Park Avenue will amend the Manhattan skyline and be one of the most prestigious high-rise towers in New York City. The 52-story condominium building is located on a 60 ft by 100 ft lot (18.3 m by 30.5 m) on East 60th Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. The geographically complex site is bounded by two fragile five-story masonry buildings on the east and west, a mid-rise building on the north, and a New York City Transit (NYCT) subway tunnel on the south. To add to this complexity, the ambitious development required an excavation between 70 and 80 ft (21.3 and 24.4 m) deep, mostly below groundwater level in highly-permeable rock, to accommodate four levels of cellars. The new building also cantilevers 24 ft (7.3 m) over a five-story historic building on the east. The limited footprint of the building coupled with large compressive and tensile axial loads, considerable base shear and over-turning moments, and the required deep excavation, presented unique foundation challenges. This article describes how the challenges were solved with an innovative combination of permanent secant pile walls and drilled shafts.Site GeologyThe 1865 Viele Map provides the site topographic conditions prior to development in the area, and indicates that the site was at the eastern edge of a historic marshland, which was approximately west of Park Avenue and north of 58th Street. A historic stream, which ran alongside the eastern edge of the site, was part of a larger stream network that traversed the surrounding area. This stream network is also visible in the 1865 Viele map. In addition, the bedrock beneath the site lies in a highly weathered zone due to a couple of ancient faulted zones that transect the site. These indicate that a zone of highly weathered rock is expected."

The Kennecott Utah Copper Modernization Project, initiated in 1986, was directed to provide an expansion and modernization of mining and process facilities at the property's Bingham Canyon Mine and ore concentrators. Major components in the project included installation of an in-pit ore crusher, transfer conveying system, and construction of a new copper ore concentrator with a design capacity basis of 70,000 tonnes/day. The Copperton Concentrator was commissioned in February 1988. A principal feature of the plant is the grinding circuit, comprised of three identical lines, each consisting of a 10.37 m (diameter) by 4.57 m (length) Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and two 5.54 m (diameter) by 8.62 m (length) ball mills. The SAG mills are driven by two variable-speed 9,000 kW DC motors coupled through a clutch-pinion gear-ring gear assembly. The ball mills are driven by 4,125 kW synchronous motors coupled through a typical clutch-pinion gear-ring gear system. The expansion and particularly the Copperton Concentrator performance was so successful that by early 1989, management began examining options to further expand production capacity. With regards to the concentrator, numerous alternatives were considered, ranging from installation of a grinding line similar to one of the existing lines, to a "super" line consisting of a 12.8 meter (diameter) SAG mill and a 20,000 kW motor with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per day. The technical and economic analysis of the various scenarios indicated that one "large" 11.0 meter (diameter) by 4.88 meter (length) SAG mill with a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes per day and a 12,000 kW drive would be optimum. The key question to be answered in the project was whether to continue with the pinion-ring gear combination, or install a gearless drive. The following paper outlines many of the items that were evaluated in the mill selection process followed by actual plant performance, and a discussion of ongoing plant continuous improvement projects.

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

"Anew condominium complex in Arlington, Va., presented some formidable constraints. One was the requirement for a permanent retaining wall to support a 48.5-ft (15-m) cut and an existing 16- story building on top of the slope. Another was the adjacent property owners’ refusal to allow tieback anchors to encroach on their property. The General Contractor (GC) proposed an innovative design incorporating vertical concrete load-bearing elements (LBEs) supported by post-tensioned tiedowns. The owner accepted and the project was successfully completed in 2007.The original designer had proposed a system that included a temporary, raked soldier pile and lagging wall and a permanent cantilever retaining wall with a large piled footing. The system was potentially costly and its constructability questionable.The GC then asked for a design-build alternative to reduce costs and enhance the schedule. The first idea was a diaphragm wall with vertically anchored T-sections. However, configuring a crane to excavate perpendicular sections using grab equipment seemed impossible. There were also utilities approximately 25 ft (9 m) from the existing building, two tiered retaining walls down the slope and a large swimming pool at the base. However, the GC was committed to providing a stable bench 20 ft (6 m) wide along the wall alignment to support the crane.The design evolved to single bite panels using diaphragm wall technology, commonly called LBEs, or barrettes, when they carry vertical loads. For this project, 44 LBEs were horizontally spaced at 9 ft (2.75 m) on center, oriented perpendicular to the wall, extending into bedrock and anchored vertically on the upslope side to resist overturning moments. They were essentially large soldier piles that provided both temporary and permanent support of excavation.An unusual formal agreement was established with the GC to complete the work based on pricing, and prior to completion of final design. This arrangement allowed for an exchange of ideas that increased project efficiencies and lowered costs — without the fear that design concepts would be “shopped” to competitors."

"SUMMARY Investigations from tunnel face are part of risk mitigation measures during the excavation works. With the tunnel equipment, percussion drillings of up to 30-40m can be achieved. Core drillings are state of art method for investigation exceeding 50m. At Koralm base tunnel, up to 270m deep percussion drillings were performed with drilling rigs and accompanied by an intensive investigation program. These investigations consisted of monitoring during the drilling, field tests (with packer, using the preventer, borehole imaging) and in laboratory. Percussion drillings are cheaper and save time of interruption of the excavation progress. INTRODUCTION As part of a proper risk management, horizontal advance drillings during excavation of underground works can be seen as state of art and meet wide acceptance. Core drillings, deep and shallow percussion drillings can be differed. The selection of the type of drilling, meanwhile, causes intensive discussions. On the one hand, only a core drilling allows a direct investigation of the rock mass expected during later excavation works. On the other hand core drillings are expensive in both cost and time – if there is no excavation progress during the investigation measures – in construction time. Percussion drillings can be performed as rapid investigation measure with the excavation equipment (“Jumbo”) allowing two dimensional image of the ground around the cross section. There is some limitation concerning a reasonable depth of approximately 30m and a borehole diameter of 76mm. The applications of preventer, packer or borehole imaging are hardly applicable. By use of a drilling rig depths of percussion drillings of several hundred meters can be achieved relative easily and there is less limitation of the borehole diameter. Installation of a preventer is possible, as well as packer tests and borehole measurements (imaging, gyroscope, borehole geophysics). The gap of information between core and percussion drilling cannot be closed completely, but it can be reduced substantially and sufficiently by combination of an intensive program of measurements and analysis accompanying the investigation works."

The Marine Operations and Engineering section of the British Geological Survey based in Edinburgh, Scotland have, over the last 30 years, developed and operate a series of remotely operated, and powered, seabed coring systems. These systems were initially developed to provide a cost-effective solution to ground truth seismic reflection data for regional geological mapping, where the only solution that existed was conventional and expensive drill-ships. Since the early 1990?s these tools have been used for many other applications in industry and science. Currently the systems can operate in up to 2000 m water depth for 5m seabed penetration and up to 4500m water depth for a specialised oriented core drill which collects a scribed core to 0.8m below seabed. Scientific applications focus on determining the geology of an area and follows pre-determined geophysical interpretations. It usually also follows other coring attempts with non-powered coring equipment which is invariably unsuccessful if the strata is over-consolidated sediments or hard rock. Commercial applications include cable and pipeline route surveys, diamond, gold and base metal exploration, beach reclamation and aggregate materials evaluation. In many cases there is a blend of science and commercial investigation typified by coring in hydrothermal vent areas or carrying out geological coring in a frontier oilfield province. The versatility of the drills allows cost effective and rapid operations in remote and hostile areas where a rapid investigation may be the only one possible in a short weather window. The deepwater operational capability also allows science and commercial assay to be obtained ahead of potential exploitation and allows formulation of scientific theories or commercial project plans based on sound core data. Being mobile and compact these corers may be used from suitable (Dynamically Positioned or Anchored) vessels of convenience and thus provide a cost effective platform for sampling different types of seabed geology on an international basis.

The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

The response of two structures to blast-induced ground vibrations were evaluated and compared in order to quantify the impact of different blasting operations, hard rock and soft rock blasting, upon the structures movements. The first instrumented structure was a residential type, located in the operational area of a coal mine, were blasting is conducted in soft rocks, such as siltstone and coal, with compressive strength ranging from 20 to 50 MPa. Blasting is characterized by low benches, with hole lengths averaging 5.5 m (18 ft) and low powder factors, 140 to 210 g/m3 (0.236 to 0.354 lb/yd3), resulting in very little horizontal movement of the rock during the blast. The second structure was a commercial building, located in a basalt quarry (compressive strength between 109 and 180 MPa), where blasting is conducted in 12 m (39.4 ft) benches with powder factors ranging from 200 to 350 g/m3 (0.337 to 0.590 lb/yd3). Velocity sensors were placed on the structure walls to measure wall displacements and calculate blast-induced strains in the walls, and these results were compared with the driving ground excitations. The calculated strains were compared with the limits of rupture of the cement grout used as mortar between bricks and as wall coating, considered to be the weakest material in the structure composition. The blast-induced response of existing cracks in the structures were also measured using displacement gages and compared to the daily influence of weather fluctuations, such as changes in temperature and humidity, on crack movement. The results show that for the same levels of ground motions the structures present different movement, resulting in distinct levels of induced strains on the walls depending on the geology. The influence of long-term temperature and humidity variations on crack movements on both structures is very similar, during the same seasons of the year. Crack response to long-term weather changes is 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than blast influences.

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year's day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio's band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of' Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio's band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The minutes of the General Meeting held on 15th November, 1968 and which were published in the February Journal, were taken as read and their adoption moved by Messrs J. N. Saunders and N. A. Honnet. There were no matters arising from the minutes. GENERAL BUSINESS The Chairman reminded members of the forthcoming visit by the Branch to the Dudfield Works of the Anglo-Alpha Cement Company, to take place on Wednesday 16th April. TALK ON ROCK MECHANICS The Chairman called upon Mr J. W. Wilson to address the meeting on the subject of the practical applications of rock mechanics to mining. Mr Wilson used a slide projector to present his subject in a most interesting and instructive manner which eventually resulted in much useful discussion taking place. The Chairman then called upon Mr A. von Holdt to thank the speaker. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked members and visitors for their attendance and closed the meeting at about 10 p.m., after which refreshments were served.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.
