M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function ?(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [1 N-hy*(h) = 2(N h) i21 {Xi-Xi+h}Z, h=0, 1, N-1] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, X i+h is the sample value at the i +h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2,…., up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any ar¬bitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of onedimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. ? Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity. ?

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

INTRODUCTION Although the mining method described in this chapter is locally designated "modified Mitchell," there are so many features which are characteristic of square sets that the designation "modified square set" would describe the method equally well. The method was developed as a result of local operating experience with various mining methods, observing operations in mines in the southwest where Mitchell stoping had been thoroughly developed, and an exhaustive study of min¬ing methods literature. Since 1941, modified Mitchell stopes have con¬tributed over 50% of the total stope production and were largely responsible for supporting production dur¬ing the war years and period of declining manpower and increasing costs. GEOLOGY The community of Gilman is situated on Battle Mountain at an elevation of 2743 m (9000 ft) in the Battle Mountain mining district, about 45 km (28 miles) by highway north of Leadville, CO. The sur¬rounding area, including the Mount of the Holy Cross and Eagle River Canyon, is noted for its beauty and recreational facilities, both summer and winter. Massive sulfide ore bodies of the limestone replace¬ment type occur as chimneys and mantas or as blankets in strata dipping 0.19 rad (11°) northeasterly. A chimney is shaped like an inverted cone with shale, quartzite, and porphyry caprocks forming its base. This relatively impervious capping apparently blocked rising ore constituents which formed the chimneys and mantas. At the apex or lower extremity of the chimneys, the ore follows small fractures and bedding planes in under¬lying quartzite. Dimensions of chimneys vary, ranging up to 61 m (200 ft) vertically and 76 m (250 ft) horizontally near capping. The manta or blanket ore bodies vary in vertical cross section from one hundred to several thousand feet. One such manta was developed from its outcrop to its chimney source approximately 610 m (2000 ft) downdip. Another manta of substantial cross section and length did not follow shale but extended updip with limestone capping from its source at a lower horizon. All chimneys, however, make up to the shale¬quartzite-porphyry capping. Chimney ore minerals are mainly pyrite and chalco¬pyrite with accessory copper and silver minerals, surrounded by, and in places overlain with, marmatite, pyrite, and galena. Manganosiderite extends into the ore. It may or may not be impregnated with sufficient marmatite and galena to be of commercial grade. Ore may be massive, coarsely crystalline, or sandy, some¬times rubbly. Generally speaking, chimney ore masses are incompetent and of variable grade. Caprock is heavy and caves readily. Manta ore minerals are mostly marmatite, pyrite, and galena associated with manganosiderite. Structural characteristics of the ore are similar to those found in chimneys and where the manta contact shale capping the ground is unusually heavy. However, the large manta with limestone capping mentioned previously consisted of a hard strong ore mass in fairly strong host rock. Commercial ore contacts are fairly regular in this manta but in others the ore waste contacts along the walls are irregular with shaly limestone pendants extend¬ing downward into the ore at capping. Dolomite sand is also quite frequently encountered along wall contacts and less frequently overhead. MINING METHODS Practically all stoping in the Gilman ore bodies has been carried on with timber and fill methods and the features which have been briefly described have dictated the choice. Although at the present time modified Mitchell and underhand square-set stopes account for the total production, considerable production has been obtained from alternate horizontal cut-and-fill stopes with Mitchell truss stopes in the pillars. This method was highly satisfactory in the hard manta ore body mentioned earlier and where ore excavations 11 m (35 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) long required no auxiliary timber support. Performance-based approach to design of structures including foundations was adopted after enforcement of the revised Building Standard Law in Japan in 2000. The use of piled-raft foundation is favorable for medium-rise buildings in soft ground because of its good performance. In the design of the piled-raft foundation (Architectural Institute of JAPAN2002), vertical load is usually carried by the raft foundation, while the pile is primarily meant to control settlement of the structure. Shaft friction is expected to be larger in a nodular pile(Karkee, et.al., 1998) since it has larger surface area than a straight pile, and such piles are frequently used in piled-raft foundations. Since few structures with piled-raft foundation exist currently, the settlement characteristics of piled-raft foundation have not been fully clarified. To design piled-raft foundations with better confidence, the mechanism of vertical bearing capacity and the spatial distribution of settlement should be clarified, for which the actual behavior of the building-foundation system needs to be evaluated. This paper presents observations of settlement of a building with a piled-raft foundation at a soft ground site. The building is a steel structure covering an area an 766 m2, and consists of two-storey office block and one-storey warehouse block. The filled ground of about 5-m thickness at the ground surface is underlain by approximately 4-m thick alluvial sand layer below which lies about a 17-m thick alluvial clay layer with SPT N-value less than 2. The piles used in the piled-raft foundation are 12-m long nodular piles with nodal diameter of 500 mm (pile shaft diameter is 400 mm). The bored pre-cast piling method (Karkee, et.al., 1998) was used to install the piles. To evaluate the foundation settlement, the method of analysis of three-dimensional frame system, utilized widely in Japan, was adopted in combination with the foundation system. Basic assumptions were: (i) total ground settlement is evaluated as the sum of immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, (ii) immediate settlement is evaluated from the Mindlin?s solution in which strain dependency of shear modulus of soil is considered, (iii) settlement in clayey layers is evaluated by the one-dimensional consolidation theory, and (iv) shear spring between soil and pile shaft is represented by a hyperbolic function. The applicability of the method of analysis was verified by comparison with results of field monitoring of building settlement.

"The variability in strength and compressibility of in situ deep soil mixing products can be greater than the variability of the natural soil. However, satisfactory performance can be achieved by careful construction and an appropriate QA/QC program. This paper presents a case study on the use of deep dry soil mixing columns to support several embankments over soft clay along a highway project. Post-construction settlement monitoring indicated that good performance is achieved where the acceptance criteria are met, except in an area with high organic content. Embankments with contrasting performance are compared to the quality control test results which comprised laboratory testing of core samples as well as in situ test results such as pull-out and push-in vanes and conventional cone penetration tests. Drawing on the performance results and quality control testing, discussions and guidelines are given on quality assurance acceptance criteria and construction control testing regime for future projects.INTRODUCTIONBetween 2008 and 2012, the largest deep dry soil mixing (DSM) contract during that time in the southern hemisphere was carried out for the Ballina Bypass project. The project, comprising 12 km upgrade of the Pacific Highway located in northern New South Wales close to the border of Queensland, was commissioned by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) of NSW. The ground improvement contractor was Keller Ground Engineering (KGE) Australia. Seven different types of ground improvement techniques were employed for the project, ranging from low embankment strategy with nominal preloading, to surcharge with wick drains, light weight bottom ash fill, DSM, vibro-replacement stone columns, dynamic replacement, and vacuum consolidation (installed by Menard Bachy Pty Ltd). Different techniques were chosen depending on time program, cost, and performance requirements relative to proximity to piled structures (e.g. bridge abutments) and post-construction settlement and differential settlement for either rigid or flexible pavements at different locations.DSM was the most utilized ground improvement technique employed on the project, comprising a total of about 285 km of 0.8 m diameter columns to depths up to 18 m for the purpose of supporting bridge approach embankments and culverts with embankment heights up to 6 m. DSM was chosen due to the very soft nature of the clay soil with moisture content practically at liquid limit, and the relative speed and economy of the system. Dry cement powder at rates of 160 kg/m3 to 200 kg/m3 were pneumatically discharged via the hollow stem of the mixing tool, and mixed with the soil (using multiple horizontally mounted paddles on a single vertical stem) at high speed as the mixing tool is withdrawn."

"After commissioning and start-up of the first 500m3 TankCell® flotation cell in 2014, the over 300m3 mechanical flotation cells have earned their place in large-scale flotation operations. These 500 to 630m3 cells, designed for projects with large throughputs, are proven to provide savings in project capital and operational expenditure through savings in foot print, energy consumption, and less equipment to install and maintain. Addition to savings in different phases of a project, these cells provides operational flexibility and has shown improvements in metallurgical performance. In this paper a case study from Kevitsa TankCell® e500 installation and Buenavista del Cobre TankCell® e630 installations will be given.INTRODUCTION After development (Grönstrand and Bourke, 2008), characterization (Morales et al. 2009; Yanez et al. 2009; Grönstrand at al. 2009), validation (Elgueta et al. 2009; Coleman and Dixon, 2010), and more than 350 industrial installations of the Outotec TankCell® e300 flotation cell, the well proven energy efficient TankCell® product family introduced the TankCell® e500 forced-air flotation cell late June 2012 (Outotec.com, 2012). The introduction of the 500 m3 flotation cell followed by introduction of a 630 m3 flotation cell, TankCell® e630, in October 2014 (Outotec.com, 2014). These large flotation cells are designed for projects with high throughputs where the number of cells needed for operation with smaller equipment would become large. The benefits of this size of flotation cells comes from the lower capital expenditures due to lower equipment costs, savings in plant footprint, less installation work with less auxiliary equipment, lower energy consumption, and less units per installation resulting in less components, spare parts and maintenance.The first TankCell® e500 was commissioned and taken into operation in October 2014 at FQML Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator, nowadays owned by New Boliden. The first TankCell e630 was taken into operation in January 2018 at GrupoMexico’s Buenavista del Cobre Cu-Mo concentrator. The start-ups of the first TankCell® e500 and TankCell® e630 followed with test work where the hydrodynamic performances of the cells were characterized and metallurgical performance studied. The results of the TankCell® e500 test work were presented in detail by Mattsson et al (2015a; 2015b) and TankCell® e630 by Grau et al. 2018. In this paper the metallurgical improvements achieved with the large cell installations will be presented."

A residential structure adjacent to a quarry in Ohio was instrumented to record structure motions, resulting wall strains and existing crack displacements in response to close-in blasting within 82 m (270 ft). The project is a cooperative effort among international experts representing the European Federation of Explosives Engineers (EFEE) and ISEE supported by more than 21 persons from eight different countries to compliment prior work performed at the Aitik Mine in northern Sweden. The focus of this study is to compare blast-induced vibration measurements relative to regulatory compliance limits as a percentage of allowable velocities among eight different countries for a one-story residential wood-frame structure with a brick-and-mortar exterior and full basement. Participating counties included Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Geophones were placed on the foundation and in the ground in accordance with each country’s regulations to record peak velocities as a function of frequency or distance to blasting. This study extends the work performed at the Aitik Mine to include interior corner geophones to calculate global wall strains and micro-m (micro-in) displacement gauges mounted over an existing drywall crack to measure blast-induced dynamic crack responses and climatological influences on daily opening and closing of a crack. Structure responses were documented for 68 blasts conducted north of the structure from February through September 2023 of which 17 blasts were selected for detailed analyses. The highest in-ground PPVs recorded were 43 mm/s and 59 mm/s at the NE and SW corners, respectively. Measurements from these blasts plotted within each country’s limits provided a comparison of stringency among the counties. The percentage of compliance limits among counties ranged from an average of 114% for the US, UK, and Austria limits to the highest of 585% for Switzerland. Despite these high percentages of compliance for all countries, the global tensile strains induced by these blasts were at most only 12 μ-strains and occurred with the highest velocity blast that exceeded each county’s limit. This high percentage of compliance and low strain level demonstrates the restrictive nature of the regulations studied. Peak dynamic crack opening and closing during blasting averaged 20 -m (0.0008 in) while the 12-hour weather-induced crack displacement during the time period over which blasting occurred averaged 200 -m (0.008 in) and the largest 12-hr change in crack width was 356 -m. This low level of crack response validates the observation that the studied regulations have highly conservative limits for cracking potential of standard building materials.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. Slab-buckle failures in coal sequences involve thin slab deformation in strata dipping parallel to the footwall, and are a consequence of both unloading and the weak nature of the thinly bedded rock mass. Methods of modelling and predicting such occurrences include: +        a conceptual model using a base friction table, +        a mathematical model using the Euler solution for column and beam bending (after Goodman, 1980), and +        computer analysis techniques such as UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code after Cundall and Hart, 1993).   Slab-buckle failures have the potential to seriously disrupt production because of their volume and rapidity, and to endanger both equipment and personnel working on the pit floor.   In July 2004 a large slab-buckle failure occurred overnight after a new batter and bench had been formed at the Malvern Hills Opencast Mine in inland Canterbury. This involved the entire length of the pit (85m along strike) when a 2m thick intact slab with a total volume of ~3500m3 translated down dip 6.2m on the base of a thin coal seam to form a pronounced buckle at the toe. The coal measures consist of finely laminated mudrocks with multiple coal seams of varying thickness dipping ~45¦ to the southeast, and the opencast mine had been designed with footwall batters formed parallel to bedding with a vertical bench separation of 15m.   Back analysis of the Malvern Hills failure was necessary to investigate the controls on footwall instability, and for future mine design. An engineering geological model was created and samples of the slab material and failure surface were collected and tested to establish the required parameters for use in the Euler solution for column and beam bending. Back analysis using the Euler solution provided unrealistic results that overestimated the overall length of a stable slope by more than 10 times.   No further large scale slab-buckle failures have developed at the mine site, in part because of the slow rate of coal extraction, but precautionary drainage of the footwall slopes has been undertaken to improve overall batter stability. The location of the slab-buckle failure on a critically positioned pre-sheared thin coal seam with full hydrostatic head is considered the most probable cause of the July 2004 failure, rather than inherent instability of the generic bench and batter arrangement adopted. The use of a precedent-based engineering geology approach to future mine design is considered the most appropriate solution in the circumstances.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation: W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The closing of the gap in the European waterway- net is one of the big and challenging traffic projects following the German reunification. The water canals in the North German plain connect the Rhine river, the border between Germany and France, with the Oder, the German border river to Poland. As early as in the 30's of the 19th century the planning and construction of a ship- lift and a canal bridge started, in order to close this last big gap in the system between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe- Havel Canal near Magdeburg. This main waterway connects the West of Germany, known for its coal mines and steel mills, with the capital Berlin, and from there it goes on into Poland. The building activities started in 1934 but came to a complete stop in 1942 because of the war. The communist government in East Germany was not interested in continuing this huge project, including the ship lock Rothensee, the canal bridge crossing the river Elbe, the former border river between West and East Germany, and the lock Hohenwarthe due to lack of political backing along with low construction capacity. Now this important project is in progress and this report describes the special foundation techniques used on the great ship lock Hohenwarthe. Hohenwarthe is a double- bay ship lock of considerable scale, which is notable for recirculating water rather than letting it flow. It includes 44 800 m2 ( 481 720 sq. ft) of up to 55 m ( 180 ft) deep cut- off walls, ground water control, 1248 bored piles with a depth of 22 m ( 72 ft ) serving as foundation and 28 000 m ( 91 864 ft) of soil densification with vibroflotation equipment for ground improvement. In the year 2003 the project shall be completed and all ships can travel from the West to the East through Germany without expensive and time- consuming detours through other canals and locks.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. A case study is provided that highlights the successful use of high efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) adapted from the oil and gas industry for a large scale, open pit mine dewatering operation. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito Mine, Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit development areas in Zacatecas, Mexico. At the time of publication (July 2012), there were 18 vertical bedrock dewatering wells producing an average flow rate of 350 liters per second (lps) from the Peñasco and Chile Colorado development areas. Average pumping rate per well was 18 lps, with a maximum of 44 lps. The depth of wells varies from 330 m to 500m, and includes both in-pit and perimeter (ex-pit) pumping centers. A network of 50 piezometers was used to monitor the response of groundwater levels to pumping. Since dewatering operations were initiated in 2007, groundwater elevations decreased overall, from approximately 1950 m above sea level (masl) to around 1625 masl, for a total of 340 m of drawdown. The pit floor elevation was approximately 1655 masl. All of the producing wells were constructed with 16-inch boreholes, completed with 10-inch diameter blank casing and louvered screen sections and equipped with ESPs. The application of ESPs has proven to be highly effective in the case of Peñasquito?s dewatering operations. Noted advantages include the following: ? Small diameter pump allows use of smaller diameter boreholes (16 inches) and casing / screens (10 inches) reducing well drilling and construction costs ? Greater application range for flow rate and total dynamic head ? Variable speed drive systems for greater energy efficiency and flow rate optimization ? Integration of downhole instrumentation into the motor and pump assembly The advantages and benefits of using high efficiency ESPs revolutionized the dewatering program at Peñasquito open pit mine as evidenced by the number of deep vertical well installations and high dewatering flow rates and total dynamic head requirements.

"Today's demand for better and more efficient methods inspires new approaches to construction and mine development.A project at Asarco's Aquarius Mine provided a challenge that resulted in the adaptation of a civil construction technique to a mining application.This paper describes the construction of an escapeway shaft to surface from the mine's 150m level. The prime consideration was to provide the most cost-effective method of establishing a shaft collar in the 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden. This problem was resolved with the employment of the drilled in-caisson method.The remainder of the 500ft (152m) deep shaft was raise bored and portable hoisting equipment was used to install a permanentmanway and shaft liner.IntroductionHaving completed the first phase of exploration development in 1982, J.S. Redpath Limited was engaged to carry out an engineering and cost study to investigate the feasibility of re-opening Asarco's Aquarius Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The scheme was to develop the proven ore reserves and proceed with shrinkage stoping while carrying out further exploration development and diamond drilling.One significant and costly component of the project was the provision of an escapeway shaft to supply additional ventilation as well as a second means of egress from the mine. The major complication to this task was the presence of 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden at the site. The first and obvious approach was to use conventional ground-freezing methods as had been employed previously on .this property for the initial development shaft. This being the only ""sure"" method available at the time of the budget estimate, it was used as a basis for the study but its considerable projected cost and time demand inspired further investigation into other possible solutions.After considerable research and several brainstorming sessions, a Redpath team came up with an approach whose basic procedures had been used extensively in the civil construction field, although they were novel to the mining industry."

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. Alveolar macrophages (AM) exposed to cytokines or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produce the free radical nitric oxide (NO·) by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). They also release reactive oxygen free radicals following exposure to silica dust. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether NO· is produced by rat AM and/or recruited leukocytes following the intratracheal (IT) instillation of silica. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (175 to 225 g) were IT instilled with either silica dust (10 mg/100 g body wt) or LPS (0.25 mg/100 g body wt). After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC) and lavaged lung tissue were assayed for iNOS mRNA. Cell counts of BALC and iNOS-dependent (Nw-nitro-Larginine methyl ester [L-NAME]-inhibitable) chemiluminescence generated by AM were also determined. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the steady-state levels of BALC iNOS mRNA were significantly increased by 3-fold following IT silica and by 7-fold following IT LPS. Partially enriched fractions of either AM or leukocytes from silica-treated rats both exhibited significantly elevated iNOS mRNA in Northern analysis. iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence was significantly increased in AM by 36-fold following IT silica and by 89-fold following IT LPS. Differential counts of BALC showed that AM numbers did not change in any of the treatments; however, red blood cells increased by 30-fold following IT silica and by 23-fold following IT LPS. Total leukocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes plus lymphocytes) increased by 58-fold following IT silica and by 274-fold following IT LPS. The results demonstrate that AM and neutrophils iNOS steady-state mRNA levels, AM iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence, and lavagable red blood cells and leukocytes all increased following IT silica. These findings suggest that NO· production in rat AM and neutrophils is increased in response to silica. NO· has the ability to then combine with superoxide and form a highly reactive toxic species, peroxynitrite, which may be responsible in part for silica-induced lung damage.

This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

"The Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located on the eastern boundary of the Paris Basin. The URL started to be built in 2000 (shaft sinking operations) in the framework of ANDRA’s (French national radioactive waste management agency) research program aimed at determining the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW). Its underground drifts are used to study the Callovo- Oxfordian claystone layer between 420 m and 550 m in depth.The ongoing research program (started in 2006) following the “Technology Readiness Level” (TRL) Scale is more dedicated to technologies improvement and demonstration issue of the different disposal components, even if characterization and monitoring studies are still ongoing.In rock mechanics, at the main level of the URL (located at 490 m), construction and evolution of disposal cells of different size are studied for HLW and IL-LLW packages. A step by step approach, started in 2006, is carried out based on comparison of HM behavior of parallel drifts excavated/supported by different construction methods. These various configurations give insight of the influence of construction method on the EDZ extent and evolution and on the progressive loading of the support, which are key issues to design the Cigéo disposal drifts and excavations.The concept of disposal cells studied for HLW consists in horizontal steel lined micro-tunnels 80 m long and 70 cm in diameter. Several campaigns of tests have been carried out since 2009 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of excavating such micro-tunnels and study their behavior under different conditions (with and without back filling the annular gap between the rock and the casing, watertight or not casing). A full scale demonstrator representative of the benchmark concept has also been excavated, to study its behaviour under thermal loading with heat produced by electrical heaters."
