To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

Ancient mining in Southern Africa, with reference to a copper mine in the Harmony Block, north-eastern Transvaal T. M. EVERS. B.A. (Birm.) (Visitor) and R. P. VAN DEN BERG. B.Sc. (Wits.) (Visitor) A recently discovered mine on the farms Harmony 24 and 25 in the Letaba district has been investigated archaeologically by T. M. Evers and geologically by R. P. van den Berg. The archaeological investigations shed light on the mining techniques and accompanying metallurgical techniques, while the geological investigations give information on the structure and mineralization of the mine. Comparisons with other investigated ancient workings show that mining was well understood in Iron Age times, before the African peoples had any contact with Europeans.

Speech advocating a new law of the sea-the "common heritage of mankind." The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

Graded macadam slag base has been used successfully by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W., in the construction of Expressways. However, the use of graded macadam in urban conditions introduces problems which can be avoided by the use of material meeting the specification outlined in M.R. Form 744. This paper outlines the rationale behind the technical requirements of the specification for the "Supply of natural gravel or crushed rock for road pavement (bitumen surfaced) M.R. Form 744". A blend of materials produced from slag is proposed as a potential solution for the production of slag base which would be suitable for use in urban construction or maintenance of roads.

Production evaluations were conducted at Daisy Gold Mine (Glamis Gold, formerly Rayrock), between August, 1997 and August, 1998 to quantify the effect of 3M fluorochemical surfactants (fluorosurfactants) on extraction kinetics and gold recovery in gold heap leach mining operations. Ore was treated at a level of 7-10 grams surfactant per ton of ore using 3M Pluorad TM Leach Mining Additive PC-GOLD. Kinetics and gold recovery were determined by solution assay for each of the tests. Both tests indicated improved kinetics, and data from Test 2 was used for determination of a quantitative increase in gold recovery resulting from PC-GOLD addition. A discussion of test results including methods used to determine gold recovery is provided.

The main purpose of this publication is to present relevant advances in processes and technologies of importance for consideration in the design of new refineries and the modernization of existing refinery facilities. Operation at current densities of between 300 A/m2 and 350 A/m2 is already part of the criteria customarily implemented on recent projects. This is due in part to the development of permanent cathode technology. In recent years, this technology has also been integrated with process control and automatic electrode handling and preparation machines. The combined implementation of these technologies has the advantage of enabling the process to be monitored, thus assuring traceability and allowing greater knowledge of the process to accrue.

"During the 1950's a cement plant was rebuilt along a Missouri River bluff. The escarpmentwas composed of inter_bedded shale and limestone, typical to western Missouri. All of theraw materials needed to produce cement had been mined via room and pillar at the plantsite since the late 1800's. Portions of the mine began to fail in the late 60's., and by the mid70's M.S.H.A. declared all the areas where the lower Winterset limestone had beenremoved from the back to be ""unsafe"". M.S.H.A. explained that no work could beperformed in or above these unsafe areas unless the work itself was to render the area safe."

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 m (8 ft) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting. Saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile. This implies that care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a depth of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

* George M. Humphrey, president of the M. A. Hanna Co. and of the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, has announced arrangements for financing the development of the Labrador-Quebec iron ore deposits in the total amount of $200 million. Plans call for immediately beginning the construction of mining, railroad, and handling facilities, and contemplate the start of ore shipments in 1955 which will reach 10 million tons a year shortly thereafter. Total drilled and proven ore now exceeds 400 million tons of high grade open-pit ore with prospects for large additional tonnages. Capital structure of the company authorizes up to $125 million of first mortgage bonds, $40 million of income debentures and $60 million of common stock.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with sodium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is boiled with concentrated nitric acid and then 2 ml. of a phosphotungstate solution are added. After dilution to 10 ml. with water, the solution is heated in a boiling water-bath for not less than 10 min. When cold, the solution is extracted with 2 ml. of iso-amyl alcohol and the yellow phosphotungstovanadate complex is compared with a standard series. Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 samples per man-day of 8 hr.

The high- and low-cycle fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-MBOO, in columnar-grained and single-crystal forms were determined at room temperature. It was found that the fatigue lives of these materials were greatly affected by the size of preexisting cracks in MC-type carbides contained in the micro structure. Most of the data falls on two curves given by: (zN)'/A€= K, where Nf is the number of cycles to failure, Af is the total strain range, and K is a function of carbide size. No difference was observed in the fatigue behavior of the columnar-grained and single-crystal materials for the same MC carbide size. Matrix slip and crack initiation occurred at precracked MC carbides and, to a lesser extent, at micropores. Fatigue crack propagation was mainly in the Stage I mode, i.e., on cry stallo graPhic slip planes. The Stage I fracture in these materials was unusual in that distinct features were observed on the fracture surfaces. In high-cycle fatigue, these features resembled those commonly observed on the cleavage fracture surfaces of bcc and hcp materials. Yet, in this study, the cracks propagated slowly in a cyclic manner. In low-cycle fatigue, the Stage I facets contained equiaxed dimples, similar to those observed on the tensile fracture surfaces of ductile materials. These observations indicate that both local normal and shear stresses are involved in these Stage I fractures. A model is proposed to explain these results based on the weakening of the cohesive energy of the active slip planes by reversed shear deformation and the fracture of the bonds across the weakened planes by the local normal stress. RECENT developments in casting technology have produced cast nickel-base superalloys in columnar -grained and single-crystal forms.1'2 The tensile and creep properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, cast in these forms have been shown to be superior to the corresponding properties of the conventionally cast polycrystalline material.lp2 This improvement in properties results, in part, from the elimination of grain boundaries in the single crystals and the alignment of the grain boundaries parallel to the stress axis in the columnar-grained castings. As part of a program to evaluate the fatigue properties of nickel-base superalloys cast in single-crystal and columnar-grained forms, a study has been made of the cyclic deformation and fracture of Mar-M2OO at room temperature. M. fiFl I .hininr Mpmher AIMF ic ^pninr Rocoarrh Accn^iata anH I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition range of Mar-Ma00 in weight percent is: 8 to 10 Cr, 9 to 11 Co, 11.5 to 13.5 W, 0.75 to 1.25 Cb, 1.75 to 2.25 Ti, 4.75 to 5.25 Al, 0.01 to 0.02 B, 0.03 to 0.08 Zr, 0.07 to 0.12 C, bal. Ni. All of the castings met the above specifications. The castings were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr which resulted in a 0.2 pct offset yield stress of 150,000 psi at room temperature. The microstructure of the material consisted of cuboidal, coherent particles of ordered, fcc Ni3(A1,Ti) (commonly designated y'), approximately 0.3 p on edge, distributed in an fcc y solid-solution matrix. MC carbides together with shrinkage and gas micropores were also distributed throughout the materials. The MC carbides and micropores were located preferentially in the interdendritic interstices, as well as in the grain boundaries in the columnar-grained castings. The (100) direction of all the single crystals and the common (100) axis of the grains in the columnar materials were aligned within about 5 deg of the specimen axis. Fatigue testing was carried out in the high-cycle (HCF) and low-cycle (LCF) fatigue regions, with the major difference being gross yielding of the specimen occurred during the first cycle in the LCF region. This division also corresponded with the more usual one in which the life of a specimen in LCF is less than lo4 cycles and that in HCF is greater than lo4 cycles. The designs of the high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue specimens are shown in Figs. l(a) and (c), respectively. The gage sections of both HCF and LCF specimens were electropolished prior to testing. The HCF specimens were tested in an MTS, closed-loop, hydraulic fatigue machine at 10 cps in air. The specimens were cycled between a tensile stress of 5000 psi and a maximum tensile stress which ranged from 35,000 to 125,000 psi, Fig. l(b). The LCF specimens were cycled under strain control from zero to a maximum tensile strain, Fig. l(d), in a Wiedemann-Baldwin testing machine. The experimental procedure has been described elsewhere.3'4 Both HCF and LCF tests were interrupted periodically in order to replicate the development of slip and cracking at the specimen surface. This was accomplished by placing plastic replicating tape around the gage section of the specimen while the specimen was in the mahine. The size of the MC carbides for all specimens was measured on a polished longitudinal section through the gage section after fatigue testing. The method of measurement consisted of carefully scanning the entire polished section in order to locate the largest MC carbides. Pumice and volcanic cinder are volcanic rocks characterized by a cellular structure. They are formed as gases (primarily water) dissolved in molten rock, or magma, exsolve to generate a froth that cools and solidifies into rigid foam. The cells or bubbles are referred to as vesicles and they range in size from a few thousandth of a millimeter to several centimeters. Due to their vesicular character, both pumice and cinder have lower density and higher porosity than most other rock types, and, as the vesicle walls are broken, sharp cutting edges are continually generated. These properties are the basis for their commercial value as lightweight aggregates, insulators, absorbents, and abrasives. There is a certain imprecision in the terminology applied to volcanic products, reflecting to varying degrees the diversity of volcanic rocks, the relative youth of volcanology as a distinct field of study, and customs and practices of commercial trade. In general terms, pumice is light colored (white, gray, pink, pale yellow, or brown) and highly vesicular, usually with vesicle walls that are visibly glassy. Many pumice fragments are light enough to float on water. Pumice is readily cut by steel tools and some can be crushed by hand. Individual pumice fragments may range from 1 or 2 m in one dimension to c1 mm. Commercially, finer fragments are called pumicite or volcanic ash. In volcanology the term ash refers to any fragment c2 mm in size regardless of its composition. Cinder, or scoria, is dark colored (black, red, brown) with thick vesicle walls that appear dull or stony and that may exhibit iridescence. Cinder typically is heavier than pumice and has a higher crushing strength. In volcanology the term scoria refers to dark vesicular material throughout a wide size range while it is common commercial practice to use scoria for larger fragments (usually greater than 2.5 cm) and cinder for smaller fragments. GEOLOGY Composition and Physical Characteristics Most pumice is silicic ranging from 60 to 70% SiO2, that is, dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Pumice of less silicic composition, including basaltic, occurs but it is less common and does not have extensive commercial use. Scoria and cinder are typically basaltic to andesitic with approximately 50 to 60% SiO2. Pumice and cinder may contain phenocrysts of feldspars and various ferromagnesian minerals that crystallized in the magma prior to eruption. Fragments of rock through which the magma has passed may be entrained in the melt and wall rock may be fragmented and admixed during an explosive eruption. Some scoria particles have lithic fragment cores. Phenocrysts and lithic fragments are relatively unimportant in cinder end uses but their presence may be detrimental in certain pumice products. Pumice typically has vesicles <1 mm in size separated by thin walls. Vesicle shapes include irregular, spherical, elliptical, and elongate to the point of being tubular with a silky appearance (Fig. 1). In some pumices, the vesicles are interconnected making the fragments permeable and highly absorbent; in others the vesicles are isolated forming a highly porous but very impermeable pumice. Floating masses of pumice fragments from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 were reported in the Indian Ocean for up to two years after the eruption. Vesicles in cinder are larger and range from spherical to highly irregular in shape with much thicker walls and abundant interconnections. Scoria and cinder are typically heavier, porous, and do not float. Density and hardness of pumice must be expressed precisely to avoid confusion. Density may refer to the glass itself, the apparent density of the vesicular pumice particle, or the bulk density of pumice in a deposit or in a product. Pumice glass has a specific gravity of 2.5 or more depending on its composition. Pumice fragments typically have a specific gravity of 4.0 and so will float on water, at least until enough vesicles are saturated to cause them to sink. Expressed as density, pumice fragments typically weigh less than 1 g/cm3. Depending on moisture content, particle density, and particle size distribution, the bulk density of pumice typically ranges from 500 to 700 kg/m3. Typical bulk densities of cinder range from 700 to 900 kg/m3 for material used as lightweight aggregate while the bulk density of cinder used for highways and railroad ballast may be considerably higher. Hardness in pumice may refer to the glass vesicle walls, possibly including crystals or lithic fragments, or to the apparent hardness of the particle as a whole, which is more a measure of the strength of the vesicle structure. Pumice glass typically has a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. A pumice particle may have a much lower apparent hardness and be easily cut with a knife or steel saw because the vesicle walls break readily. Pumice and cinder are primarily pyroclastic deposits formed as fragmental products of volcanic eruptions. Several classification - systems differing in various details have been proposed for pyroclasts and pyroclastic deposits based on particle size (Fisher, 1961, Schmid, 1981, Cas and Wright, 1988). Generally, particles >64 mm are referred to as blocks or bombs depending on their shape. Particles between 64 mm and 2 mm (4 mm in some schemes) are called lapilli and smaller particles are called ash. These names may be modified by compositional terms, for example pumice lapilli or scoria lapilli. Most commercial deposits are composed of fragments in the lapilli size range. In the United States, pumice fragments having one dimension of 5 cm or more are legally defined as block pumice. The procedures for acquiring pumice from federal land are determined in part by this definition and are described in a later section.
