INTRODUCTION In this gapes, the author will describes to development of Yubari New coal mine. The construction set about since October 1970, and commenced from June 1975 in winning. Especially, descrives to compare with the studies at planning stage, and the experiences at under construction. The problems for development are next four: 1) There were no outcrop of the coal bearing strata, but the development was instituted against the deep coal seam occurrence at 800 m below the surface. 2) In order to the coal seams occured the deep level from the surface, threr had very difficult problems, i.e. temperature, earth pressure, methane etc. The countermeasure to solved them, were foundation of the development. 3) The construction was afflict with the inundation in high pressure, due to cement grouting and excavating alternately, overcame the difficulties. 4) The construction was finished by the encourage of national investment, in spite of the enterprise was weaken constitution from the energy revolution since 1960's. Ishikari coal field is situated the west side of the Hidaka mountains, where runs north to south at center of Hokkaido, northern district of Japan. It's width is 40km in east and west, and length is 110km in north and south.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRI, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike 1-m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high and low volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 hr at 515°C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test -was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared to the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All of these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines or elsewhere.

Kemess South Mine ended operations in March 2011. Final reclamation works began during operations in 2008 in anticipation of closure. The focus of reclamation during mine operations was on the inactive areas of the tailings dam, waste rock dumps, and expended borrow areas. The general reclamation strategy for the Kemess Mine site marries long-term erosion control with successional reclamation principles. For disturbed areas, this requires application of growth media, proper preparation of surfaces, and introduction of native pioneer plant species to initiate successional processes of recovery. Tailings are retained behind an earthfill dam of approximately 140 m in height, with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Reclamation activities at the dam have included placement of growth media, specialized surface preparation and construction of diversion ditches. The final closure spillway is currently being constructed, with completion scheduled for summer 2011. The two main waste rock dumps contain segregated non-acid generating (NAG) waste rock and potentially acid generating (PAG) waste rock. Resloping of the NAG dump for long-term stability commenced in 2009, followed by placement of growth media and ground preparation. The PAG waste rock will be fully relocated into the expended open pit for final, permanent subaqueous disposal.

Since 1947 Preussag AG Metal1 has used a process for fuming zinc- and lead-containing dump slags and residues from vertical retorts in a half-shaft furnace at their Hüttenwerk Harz at Oker. Contrary to the classic shaft furnace, only one side of the half-shaft furnace is fitted with tuyeres. The opposite side is a bricked slope. The upper shaft section is piped. There zinc vapor and combustion gases are burned by sucked-in air. Gases and fume enter a boiler located on the rear length of the furnace via a piped fire bridge. The gases are then cooled in an air preheater prior to dedusting in a bag filter. The furnace is charged with briquettes of metal-bearing materials, coal and pitch. The leaded zinc oxide fume is comparatively rich in both lead and zinc. The copper in the feed is recovered in low-copper matte. The slag can be discarded. The Oker plant comprises 13 furnaces of 2.9 to 4.9 m length in the tuyere area. Two other plants in Italy and Spain are processing zinc leach residues by this technique. Fuming of zinc-lead-oxide ores as well as partially roasted sulfide- zinc-lead-copper bulk concentrates will be possible.

Copper concentrate particles of 200 to 300 mesh size were fed from the top of vertical reaction tube of 2.8 cm ID and 2 m long with an O2-N2 gas mixture. The reaction tube was heated to 900 K to 1100 K. The residence time of the particles in the reaction tube was about 1 second. The copper concentrate particles were very rapidly oxidized and melted down during their descent in the reaction tube. The particle temperature were calculated by combining an un-reacted core model, mass transfer between gas and particles, and heat transfer between gas, particles and tube wall. The particle temperature reached its maximum within a distance of 60 cm from the top of reaction tube, and it attained at 2000 K at higher oxygen partial pressure. The most particles were melted at the oxygen partial pressure above 20 kPa. An appreciable amount of As, Sb and Pb in the concentrate particles was eliminated in the upper portion of the reaction tube and the rate of elimination are explained by the rate of mass transfer of volatilized species through the gas film on the particle surface and the variation of particle temperature during the descent.

THE National Coal Association held its annual meeting at Cleveland on Nov. 14-16, 1928, having changed the time from the spring to the autumn to avoid conflict with the great number of meetings ordinarily held in the spring. Institute members were \\yell to the fore in its activities, the president, E. C. Mahan (who was reelected for another term!, C. E. Bockus, treasurer, and the secretary, H. L. Gancly, being A. I. M. E. members, as are many of the directors. At the first session, our past president, S. A. Taylor, presented a 1;aper which is reprinted in part herewith. At the Thurs- day session W. D. Brennan presided, Walter Barllum led the discussion on membership, and Otis Mouser led the discussion on taxation. In the afternoon, J. P. Williams, Jr., led the discussion on research. Rembrandt Peale presided at the annual dinner in the evening. At the concluding session on Friday resolutions were adopted, among them one in which the Association "reaffirms its attitude toward proposed Federal legislation affecting the bituminous coal industry by saying that it opposes legislation which would seek to single out this industry for regulatory action. This particularly applies to such bills as S4490."

HOWARD H. PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. The occurrence of underground fires in narrow tabular ore- bodies where high density timber support is used is a dangerous and disruptive occurrence. The containment and extinguishing of the fire remains a very important consideration in reducing not only the loss in production time but also in limiting the extent of the area damaged by the fire. Mindful of this, Gold Fields have adopted and developed the inert gas generator system from its origins in Poland for use in Group precious metal mines. The system generates an oxygen- deficient atmosphere which is introduced in the fire area after this has been sealed. A number of problems had to be overcome to operate this system successfully within the infrastructure of these mines. Of particular significance is the operation of a jet engine, the prime component of the system, at air pressures encountered below sea level. The modifications have been found to be satisfactory to the point where, since 1992, ten underground fires have been extinguished using this system. Invariably, the areas affected by these fires were extensive (over 1 000 000 m3) and required continuous operation of these units over extended periods of time (in some cases in excess of 400 hours).

The drilling for and production of crude oil in the Lima-Indiana and Michigan fields were directly and profoundly affected by the severe strain to which the petroleum industry was subjected during the year 1931. Serious and long-continued overproduction in the large flush areas of the western and southwestern fields, coupled with a nationwide decrease in the annual rate of consumption-increase, served to precipitate ‡ This curve is the Mid-Continent price for 38" gravity crude and hence. affords a basis for estlmating the influence of general factors upon the price structure m these fields. a mid-year economic depression which was functionally reflected in every producing area in the United States. A study of the curves of price changes in portions of the central west territory (Fig. 1) will demonstrate this relationship as well as the ensuing upward trend, which developed when pressure was artificially relieved, at least for the time being, in the producing areas in the southwestern states. Lewis E. Young, who will formally assume his duties as President of the AIME at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco in February 1949, was born in Topeka, Kansas, Oct. 1, 1878. Dr. Young received his engineering education at the Pennsylvania State College, where he received the degree of B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1900. In 1904 he received his E.M. degree from Iowa State College, and in 1915 a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. In 1947, the University of Missouri conferred on Dr. Young honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Engineering. His active career began in the educational field as instructor at Iowa State College, and following that, as professor of mining at the Colorado School of Mines, 1903-1907. While he was at Golden he launched hi: career as consulting mining engineer for various Western companies. Leaving the Colorado School of Mines, Dr. Young returned to Missouri, serving the University of Missouri as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, 1907-1914. Leaving Missouri he went to the University of Illinois as assistant professor of business organization, 1915-1918, during which period he wrote exhaustive treatises on mine subsidence and mine taxation, which won for him the degree of Ph.D. before mentioned.

The Northeast Raw Water Tunnel transports untreated water to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) Northeast Water Plant where it is treated and distributed. The occurrence of a subsidence area which was attributed to the tunnel prompted the DWSD to have the tunnel investigated. After an extensive historical and geotechnical investigation, two access shafts were constructed along the alignment in the vicinity of the subsidence. Following completion of the shafts, the subsidence area was inspected in the wet prior to dewatering the tunnel. Upon the completion of dewatering, a dry inspection was performed. During the dry inspection, an area of significant distress was encountered where sand and silt were boiling into the tunnel along with large volumes of groundwater. This distressed area was located 800m (1/2 mile) north of the original subsidence area. The tunnel was immediately refilled with water and an emergency repair program was planned and implemented. As a result of the distressed nature of the secondary tunnel liner, dewatering of the tunnel could not be performed until the secondary liner and the surrounding soils were stabilized. This paper presents a case history of both the investigation and the repairs of the Northeast Raw Water Tunnel including the various grouting and unique tunnel stabilization methodologies which were utilized.

Experimental results in conjunc-tion with the equation demonstrate the fact that energy input which produced fracture is not expended on unbroken starting material inside the mill at any time. Recently, schuhmann1 derived the Charles equation2 using the postulate that complex com-minution operations can be considered as a summa- tion of many comminution events. The fragments resulting from each event are assumed to follow the Gaudin-Schuhmamn distribution. In his derivation, Schuhmann implies that the size distribution of the total mass of a material is determined by the fraction of that mass actually subjected to comminution. Large diameter (1.0 to 2.5m) bored piles have been widely used to support buildings and elevated roadways in Hong Kong. Most of these piles are founded on a hard bearing stratum such as granitic or volcanic bedrock, in the newly reclaimed areas along the water-front, the bedrock stratum can be as deep as 70-80 metres below ground surface, and construction of bored piles to bedrock in this case is difficult and unjustified. Nevertheless, Building Ordinance Regulations in Hong Kong require piles to be founded on bedrock. To overcome this problem for elevated roadways, trial piles have been designed founded on dense, completely decomposed granite. A number of piles have been constructed and subsequently load-tested to allow the rate of mobilisation of skin friction to be measured. This paper outlines the design, construction and testing method, and comments on the test results from several trial piles. GEOLOCICAL CONDITIONS The geology of Hong Kong consists predominantly of acid volcanic rocks intruded by granite. The granite has been deeply weathered, and variations in sea level have produced a drowned coastline with sequences of alluvial, colluvial and marine deposits overlying the weathered bedrock. Reclamation has extended this coastline. Typical site conditions are described later in the paper.

The restrictions placed on drilling by the Federal Government, which caused a severe curtailment in activity at the beginning of the year, were relaxed somewhat so as to permit the drilling of one shallow† gas well per 40 acres. New wells numbering 574† were drilled for a combined depth of nearly 1,500,000 It., and of this number 131 were dry holes with a footage of slightly over 375,000. Inside locations account for the majority of these totals and the increasing demand for natural gas would normally have increased the number considerably, but many of the independent operators chose to ask for fewer exceptions to Order M-68 of the Office of Production Management, and consequently to curtail the number of wells drilled. Initial open flow of natural gas developed from all operations§ is over 230 million cu. ft. Nearly 191 million cu. ft. of this volume resulted from the 410 new gas wells drilled to horizons above the Lower Devonian, and the footage drilled in these wells accounts for approximately 93 per cent of the total. Shallow Development Oil.—Thirty oil, wells, with a total initial production of slightly over 152 bbl. and a footage of 50.000, were drilled during the § Including deepening wells previously drilled.

"Presently, there is a number of gold deposits which cannot be developed using the conventional technologies with acceptable economic indices due to low gold content, high depth of ore occurence and other conditions. For such ores, an innovation technology of underground gold leaching in the place of their occurrence is of special interest. The technology excludes ore mining and hoisting to the surface. This enables the production cost of 1 g of gold to be considerably reduced in comparison with conventional methods of gold recovery.The Maminskoye deposit oxidized ores were chosen as the subject of underground leaching because they are ideally suited for this purpose due to their composition and hydrological parameters. The ore reserves within the underground leaching block are 90, 000 t with 0.7 g/t average gold grade.An experimental system for underground leaching with a throughput of 15 cubic m solutions per hour was developed. A combined filtration-and-infiltration system of the ore massif development by holedrillingwhere pregnant solutions are air-lifted was worked out.The underground leaching flowsheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution onto active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce Dore metal."

The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

Introduction The geology of the Cochen-our Willans gold mine has been described in reports by the late Dr. H. C. Horwood (1) in 1940 and by Dr. J. P. Nowlan (2) in 1947. Information from these and other (unpublished) reports has been incorporated in the present paper, together with some recent ideas regarding structural features which are at present being used to locate ore shoots. Location and History The mining claims of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, occupy 705 acres in Dome township, on the east shore of Red lake opposite McKenzie island. Adjoining properties are those of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines on the west, Boymar Gold Mines on the north, Marcus Gold Mines on the east, and Martin-McNeely Gold Mines on the south. The claims of the original group were staked by W. M. Cochenour, Dan Willans, and H. G. Young, and the Cochenour Willans Syndicate was formed in 1928. Work was carried out by the Syndicate and several other companies during the next eight years with inconclusive results, due to the irregular occurrence of the ore. In 1936, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated and production was finally started late in 1939.
