During the past decade, over 114-km (71-mi) of 0.25-m (10-in) to 3.7-m (144-in) finished diameter tunnels have been driven below Metropolitan Houston as part of a major program of water and wastewater improvements. This large effort has seen the introduction of midwestern technology with over 18-km (11-mi) of man-entry pipe jacking and European and Japanese technology with over 21-km (13-mi) of microtunneling. Owing to the high water table; a stratigraphy consisting of stiff fissured clays containing numerous layers, channels, and lenses of water-charged sands and silts; and active faults, many challenges existed for designers and contractors alike.

This paper describes the operating practice and design features of an intensive-cyanidation plant at the East Gold Plant of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited (V.R.E.M.). After the development oh cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant gravity concentrates by the Anglo American Research laboratories (A.A.R.L.), a full scale plant was commissioned at Western Holdings (Welkom Division) Gold Mine in March 1977, and the V.R.E.M. plant was commissioned in August 1981. Although the gravity-concentration route does not now enjoy the prominence of former times, in an existing conventional plant the intensive-cyanidation route can successfully replace mercury amalgamation.

(Met.) in 1983-all from the University of Pretoria. Mr J.A.D. Britz matriculated in 1958 at the Roodepoort Hoerskool, and joined the mining industry in 1959 as a student mine official at the Rand Mines Training Centre. Mr J.A. Cruise matriculated at Durban High School and joined Union Corporation as a Learner Official in 1962. He was awarded a scholarship to read for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mining engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand

The 12,710-m (41,720-ft) Riverside Badlands Tunnel is located between the most active faults—San Andreas and San Jacinto—in Southern California. To accomplish the impervious final lining design and to accommodate the effects of earthquake ground motions, a new approach was developed and is prescribed in this paper. Two final lining options, welded steel pipe and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, are considered for the tunnel, which will be excavated under groundwater and ground conditions from soft rock to hardrock at depths exceeding 244 m (800 ft). The buckling strength, serviceability, and structural integrity under seismic effects and other loads were considered in the design.

The Bruce Museum is an art, science and natural history museum in Green- wich, Connecticut. The museum was originally built as a private residence in 1853, and has undergone several reno- vations, the most recent dating to 1992. The current renovation is part of a $60 million capital expansion plan for the "New Bruce." The renovation includes a 43,000 sf (4,000 m2), three-story addition that will more than double the size of the museum, adding space for new ex- hibitions, education and community spaces. The proposed bottom of the foundations for the renovation sit up to 16 ft (5 m) below the Bruce Museum's existing shallow foundations.

Martha Mine, owned by Newmont Mining, Australia appointed Macmahon Contractors (NZ) Ltd as the mining contractor to drill, blast, and crush and convey ore for processing, followed by construction of a tails dam facility from the waste material. The open pit is located 140km(90miles) south east of Auckland, New Zealand in the middle of the township of Waihi (the main street of the town with a population of 3,500 is 90m from the perimeter of the open pit mine). Mining must proceed at 325,000m3 (of which involves blasting approximately 11,000 holes per month, in order to ensure continued ore supply.

"A 25m deep cut-off wall is required for environmental remediation of a Former Chlor-Alkali Plant. Extensive trials were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the mixes proposed, with the requirements of the cut-off wall to include limiting criteria for hydraulic permeability, vapour permeability and strength, over a 100 year design life. A limited number of field CSM trial panels were installed on a nearby site with similar stratigraphy, and a variety of mixes and mixing methodologies were used, together with the extraction of deep wet grabbed samples from the panels, which were tested for strength, hydraulic permeability and gas permeability. Test results obtained from these trials revealed a trend which allowed the construction methodology to be decided. Further to this, the mix design needed to be resolved, together with sensitivity analysis on the variations in the mix which might occur during construction, as a result of normal unavoidable variations in construction technique. Laboratory sampling would be used at lesser expense, to resolve the final mix design and analyse the sensitivity of the possible mix variations. An initial series of laboratory mixed samples were prepared using soil samples and groundwater obtained from the site, and testing carried out. However the test results in this initial series of laboratory tests could not match the results which had been achieved in the field trials. Closer scrutiny and investigation and rounds of sampling and testing, then revealed laboratory techniques for mixing and sampling which provided a logical way to match the actual field test results. CSM Construction is due to commence soon and will provide more extensive results which can be compared back to the laboratory trials. This project provides a valuable opportunity to resolve methods of laboratory sampling so that they compare well with results from in-situ deep mixing.INTRODUCTIONThe former chlor-alkali plant at Botany, NSW, which operated from 1945 until 2002, used mercury cell technology and brine solution to manufacture chlorine, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite and ferric chloride. Mercury contamination is present in the permeable alluvial soil profile beneath the site. The mercury is present in the form of elemental and inorganic mercury, together with dissolved methyl mercury in the groundwater and soil profile beneath the site and also down-gradient of the site, to depths of up to 25m. Residual clay and sandstone bedrock at approximately 25m depth are relatively impermeable and limit the contamination plume. A cap and contain approach has been recommended by consultants Golder Associates, and this involved a subsurface containment wall, or cutoff wall, to restrict groundwater ingress and egress, and lateral subsurface vapour migration. The cut-off wall is situated on the perimeter of the site, with a total length of 430m and passing through alluvial Botany Sands, with a nominal key into the underlying residual clay or sand stone at 20 to 25m depth. An HDPE liner insert was proposed for the upper 7m of wall above the water table, to further limit gas permeability."

For several decades, the deep, gold-bearing reefs of the Witwatersrand basin have been mined predominantly according to layouts characterised by longwalls with strike pillars to provide regional support. During the past few years, a new generation of mining layouts has been introduced. These layouts are based on the concept of grid-type, scattered mining with dip pillars for regional support. As the extraction of the gold reefs extends to depths below 3500 m, the hazards associated with mining at these ultra-depths are expected to increase to unacceptable levels. Therefore, the question arises as to, which of the currently applied mining layouts is most acceptable for the economic and safe extraction of an ultra-deep orebody. The purpose of this paper is to describe a research investigation carried out to evaluate the degree of acceptability, from the rock engineering view point, of four currently used mining layouts for application at a depth-range of between 3500 and 5000 m. Pendant plusieurs décades, les filons d’or profonds du bassin du Witwatersrand ont été exploités d’une manière prédominante selon des dispositions caractérisées par des longues tailles avec des piliers directionnels pour donner un support local. Les dernières années ont vu la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de dispositions de mine. Ces dispositions sont basées sur le concept d’extraction type grille, éparpillée, avec des piliers au pendage pour le support local. Comme l’extraction des filons d’or va à des profondeurs en dessous de 3500m, il faut s’attendre à ce que les risques associés à l’exploitation à ces profondeurs extrêmes atteignent des niveaux inacceptables. Par conséquent, la question se pose de savoir laquelle des dispositions de mine couramment utilisées est la plus acceptable pour l’extraction rentable et sans danger d’un gisement ultra profond. Le but de l’étude présente est de décrire les recherches exécutées pour évaluer le degré d’acceptabilité, du point de vue d’ingénierie de roche, de quatre dispositions de mine couramment utilisées pour application à un rayon de profondeur entre 3500 et 5000m. Die tiefen, goldträchtigen Riffs des Witwatersrandbeckens wurden über einige Jahrzehnte hindurch vorwiegend nach jenen Layouts abgebaut, die von Langfrontstreben mit Schlagpfeilern charakterisiert waren, um regionale Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Während der letzten Jahre wurde eine neue Generation von Grubenlayouts eingeführt. Diese Layouts basieren auf dem Konzept der Rasterfeld-Art, gestreuter Bergbau mit Neigungspfeilern für regionale Unterstützung. Es kann erwartet werden, daß auf Grund der Tatsache, daß sich die Extraktion der Goldriffs auf Tiefen unterhalb 3500 m verlagert, die Gefahren, die mit dem Bergbau an diesen Ultratiefen verbunden sind, sich auf ein nicht annehmbares Niveau erhöhen. Folglich erhebt sich die Frage, welche der gegenwärtig angewendete Abbaulayouts für die ökonomische und sichere Extraktion eines ultra-tiefen Erzkörpers am annehmbarsten ist. Zweck dieser Arbeit ist es, eine durchgeführte Untersuchung zu beschreiben, die vom Gesichtspunkt der Gesteinstechnik gesehen, vier gegenwärtig angewandte Abbaulayouts für den Einsatz in einem Tiefenbereich zwischen 3.500 und 5.000 m evaluiert.

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

INTRODUCTION Under certain circumstances the closure of former mines which are located above a certain flood level can result in problems such as the emanation of detrimental substances after having completed filling and reclamation operations. This especially applies to uranium mines in which the radiation dose could far exceed the dose of natural background radiation. By means of an example of the uranium mining in Germany in the following it will be demonstrated how to cope with this problem. On the basis of comparative investigations in various vein deposits and using ventilation scheme calculations proposals for the optimization of the necessary forced ventilation can be submitted. REPORT ON SITUATION In the period 1946 - 1989 the former Soviet-German joint- stock company "Wismut" developed into the biggest European uranium producer with a total output of about 220.000 t of uranium. A major mineraldeposit district was the deposit of Schlemaf Alberoda in the Saxon Ore Mountains, in which 80.000 t of uranium were produced. Thus it is among the biggest uranium de- posits of the world, from which various other metals were at- tracted for many centuries. The exploitation of the Schlemal Alberoda deposit involved steep veins in regions near the surface as well as depths of 1.800 m. Until 1991 a total excavation space of 40 million m3, which is flooded at present, was produced. With the average increase in the water level of 80 cm per week the final flood level is expected to be reached in the year 2003. The shaft 373 at present still being used for ventilation will be no longer available since the second quarter of 1998 after flooding the -540 m level because it is not connected with the excavation system near the surface. As a study shows, a radiation dose far above the natural back- ground radiation has to be expected for the town of Schlema due to the extensive mining activities near the surface and due to the subsequent displacement with missing depression fo the main mine ventilating fan. An uncontrolled air flow containing radon leaves the open mine excavation due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure and emanation caused by the barometric pressure drop with atmospheric pressure fluctuations. This mine air with its high-level radioactive equilibrium results in a high radiation dose in buildings (see Figure l). After having switched off the main ventilating fan in order to investigate the effect of the missing depression the increase in radon concentrations amounted up to 700% in various buildings of Schlema. This was partially due to the inversion state of the weather at that time. The high radon concentration has detrimental effects on the health of the population and of the miners working on the further reclamation in regions above the flood level. ANALYSIS OF THE RADON EMANATION RATE EXPECTED Considering the composition of the radon inflow from the mine workings it becomes evident that 80 % of the radon inflow originates from abandoned excavations and only 20 %from open ventilated mine excavations. This fact has to be taken into account for the ventilation after having reached the final state of flooding. After completing ventilation the radiation dose on the surface is mainly due to the radon emanation from excavations close to the surface. Investigations of the Wismut GmbH showed the in- crease in the specific radon emanation rate by a factor of 100 for abandoned excavations as compared to new drivings. One reason is the larger specific surface of abandoned galleries caused by displacements due to mining activities as well as by fall of hanging. Furthermore the radon can enter the gallery through joints, which have subsequently opened by convergences. All these effects result in a larger free surface available for radon diffusion. The large number of drivings in the deposit sections near the surface and the fact that the highest uranium contents are found near the surface as well as the high fracturing are further reasons for higher emanation rates. Considering these facts it can be expected that the radon inflow of 10.000 kBq/s, which refers to an open mine excavation of about 1.4 million m3, represents a minimum. Only by increasing the specific surface, for which a numerical value has still to be determined, this value will increase with certainty. An extensive radon emanation from the residual excavation, which cannot be flooded, can only be prevented by maintaining the ventilation system. The low pressure produced by the fan in the mine openings prevents the emanation of air containing radon due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure. Without the controlled withdrawal of the radon the population as well as the miners working on the further reclamation in areas above the flood level would be endangered. Therefore the follow-

The capillary-reservoir technique was used with lead-210 and cadmium-115m to determine the self-diffiLsion coefficients of both cadmium and lead in the liquid binary Cd-Pb system. The self-diffusion coefficients of pure cadmium and pure lead were obtained and were compared with the theoretical predictions. Good to excellent agrement between the experimental and predicted values was obtained. The self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium were tneasuved in alloys containing 2.50, 9.13, 17.40, 31.00, 45.00, 69.00, and 97.00 lot pct Cd by determining- the amount of cadniiutn-115m which diffused out of a small-bore capillavy into an infinite reservoir during- a given time peviod. Sinzila7-measurements were made with lead-210 to determine the self-diffusion coefficients of lead in these identical alloys. Diffusivities were determined from measurenzents performed in the temperature interval of 290" to 480°C. The results were correlated with the Ar-vhenius equation, and the maximum variation of the equation parameters (Q and Do) was also inrestigated . THE theory of diffusion in liquids, particularly liquid metals, is relatively undeveloped in contrast to that for the gaseous and solid states. Although the practical application of liquid metals as heat-transfer media has become increasingly important, few liquid-metals systems have been investigated. Experimental data of fundamental significance in this field are not readily obtained, which may explain but not justify the present lack of knowledge. What work has been completed is primarily restricted to liquid diffusion of pure metals; little work has been done in liquid-metal diffusion of binary mixtures. A review of liquid-metal diffusion theory and research is available elsewhere.1-4 In an effort to add to the knowledge of liquid-metal systems and to increase the basic understanding of the diffusion process in liquids, a study of diffusion in the binary-liquid system, Cd-Pb, was undertaken. The capillary-reservoir technique5 was employed to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of cadmium and lead in molten binary alloys. Measurements were made with seven selected compositions and over a temperature range from 290° to 480°C. The experimental apparatus consisted essentially of the following items: constant-temperature bath, diffusion cells, capillaries, capillary-filling device, and a radioactive tracer counting system. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS Constant-Temperature Bath. A cylindrical steel vessel, 8 in. in diam and 15 in. deep, surrounded by an insulated heating coil was used with a sodium-potassium nitrate salt mixture heating medium. The bath was maintained slightly below the desired control temperature by the furnace-heating element; and a 250-w heater, actuated by a Bayley proportional temperature controller, was utilized for the final control of the temperature. A constant-speed mixer stirred the salt to insure a uniform temperature within the bath. Four calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were placed at various positions in the salt bath to verify the absence of temperature gradients. The observed temperature variation during any diffusion run was less than 0.l°C. The entire furnace assembly was mounted on four shock absorbers to exclude building vibrations and the stirrer propeller blades were adjusted so not to induce vibrations within the reservoir. A schematic diagram of the furnace and the constant-temperature bath is shown in Fig. 1. Diffusion Cell. The diffusion cells and associated parts were the same, except for slight modification, as the one used by walls1 in this laboratory, and are shown in detail elsewhere.' A graphite crucible, 4 in. long and 40 mm (1-1/2 in.) ID, enclosed in a 60-mm (2-1/4 in.) Pyrex tube cell about 18 in. long, was used as a container for the melt. The reservoir (molten alloy in the graphite crucible) was usually about 2 to 2-1/2 in. deep. Graphite was used because of its satisfactory nature as a refractory material and the low solubility of carbon in molten Cd-Pb alloy.677 The Pyrex cell was closed at the bottom and fitted at the top (open end) with a 2-in. Dresser coupling. A brass flange was welded to the top of the coupling. The upper part of the diffusion assembly was bolted to this flange with an O-ring seal. The lower part of the diffusion cell was supported in a 3-in. brass cylinder which was open to allow for circulation of salt around the cell. The top assembly consisted of two synchronous motors, a drive shaft, a thermocouple well, and controlled-atmosphere inlets and outlets. One motor was used for rotation of the capillaries at a rate of 1/2 rpm in the reservoir during the diffusion run. The other motor was used for the vertical positioning of the capillaries and the capillary holder by means of a simple screw drive. The capillary holder and drive assembly were lowered into the reservoir for the run and raised after the desired diffusion time at a rate of approximately 0.4 in. per min. The adsorption density of ethyl xanthate on pyrite was determined as a function of xanthate concentration. Surface preparation of the mineral appears to have asafunctionsome effect on the subsequent adsorption process, A monolayer of xanthate on the surface is exceeded only in presence of oxygen. The effect of OH- , HS- (and x and CN- S=)and on the amount of xanthate adsorbed was investigated. Competition between OH- and X- (xanthate) ions for specific adsorption sites is indicated over a wide pH range. IN the flotation of sulfide ores, xanthates are most commonly used to prepare the surface of the mineral to be floated so that attachment to air takes place. The quantity of agent required to make the mineral hydrophobic is usually very small, of the order of 0.1 to 0.25 lb per ton of mineral. Details of the mechanism of pyrite collection are for the most part unsettled. Adsorption of collector has long been believed to involve an ion exchange mechanism as demonstrated for galena' and for chalcocite.2 In the work on chal-cocite it was also demonstrated that a film of xanthate radicals unleachable in solvents that dissolve alkali xanthates, copper xanthate, or dixanthogen was formed at the surface of the mineral. The unleachable product increased with increasing addition of xanthate up to a maximum corresponding to an oriented monolayer of xanthate radicals. Pyrite is extremely floatable with xanthate if its surface is fresh.9 ut the floatability decreases rapidly as oxide coatings increase in abundance. Pyrite shows zero contact angle when in contact with ethyl xanthate solution at pH higher than about 10.5;4 at neutrality, a contact angle of 60" is obtained at a reagent concentration of 25 mg per liter. Alkali sulfides and cyanides are pyrite depressants. In this study of pyrite collection the writers have sought to relate measured xanthate adsorption to the method used in preparing pyrite, to the presence or absence of oxygen, to concentration of hydroxyl, hydrosulfide, sulfide, and cyanide ions. The principal experimental tool has been radioanalysis," " using xanthatcx marked with sulfur 35. Experimental Materials Pyrite: Unlike most sulfides, pyrite is a poly-sulfide. The structure given by Bragg7 resembles that of sodium chloride, the iron atoms corresponding to the position of sodium and pairs of sulfur atoms corresponding to the position of chlorine. The edge of the unit cell in pyrite is 5.40 A and in halite 5.63 A. The S-S distance in pyrite is 2.10 A; the Fe-S distance, 3.50 A: and the Fe-Fe distance, 3.82 A. Natural pyrite from Park City, Utah, was used in this investigation. Pyrite 1 was obtained by hand picking pure crystals. Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were obtained from finer textured crystalline material containing inclusions of silicates. The same cleaning technique was utilized for the preparation of Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3, whereas a different cleaning technique was used for Pyrite 1. Pyrite 1 was prepared as follows: The crystals were ground in a porcelain ball mill and the 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by wet screening with distilled water, followed by washing for 1 hr with deoxygenated distilled water acidified with sulfuric acid to pH 1.5. The acid was removed by rinsing with deoxygenated distilled water on a filter until a pH of 6.0 was reached in the effluent. This filtration was carried out under nitrogen. The sample was then dried in a desiccator under nitrogen. The period of time for which this pyrite sample was in contact with water containing oxygen was about 4 hr. The specific surface as determined by the BET gas adsorption method was 582 cm2 per g. Final material assayed 53.12 pct sulfur and 46.5 pct iron (theoretical, for FeS,: S, 53.45 pct; Fe, 46.55 pct). After crushing, Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were washed with 1 M HCl. rinsed, and fed to a laboratory shakinq table to remove the small amount of silicates. The concentrate obtained was ground in a laboratory steel ball mill. The 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by classification in a Richards hindered settling tube. This fraction was then given a final wash with 0.1 M HCl and deoxygenated water was filtered through the sample. The final effluent showed a conductivity equivalent to that of a solution having a salt concentration of 0.3 ppm. Aqueous hydrogen sulfide solution was then added to the sampln (about 100 ml saturated H,S solution to about 1000 g pyrite under a few hundred milliliters of water) which was stored wet under nitrogen. INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. "This study presents the results of a set of sound level measurements carried out in three underground mines where auxiliary fans are used regularly. Sound levels as high as 100 dB(A) by the workings and 115 dB(A) by the fans were measured in these mines. These levels are quite high even for intermittent noise. Ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard-rock mines are presented here. Factors such as fan type, rotational speed, and silencer-duct arrangements and their effects on noise attenuation are discussed. INTRODUCTION Auxiliary fans are used in hard-rock mines extensively. They are used to ventilate development headings, crusher rooms, conveyor transfer points, and underground shops. They are also used in developing long tunnels and ramps. Depending on the flow requirements and space restrictions, single or double stage axial fans with rigid or flexible ducts are used. Usually, they are high pressure (3.75 kPa) fans with flow rates ranging from 7.1 m3/s to 30 m3/s. The input power varies from 15 kW to 113 kW (Mutama, 2004; O’Connor, 2008). Typically, a 113 kW fan can produce sound levels as high a 113 dB(A) (Howes, 2005). Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction purposes or when used, they are not well maintained. Furthermore, silencers provide limited attenuation depending on their length and type. Typically, the sound attenuation ranges from 10 dB(A) for a 1 × D silencer to 14 dB(A) for a 2 × D silencer, where D is the fan diameter. In a mine, the silencer is subject to wear and tear, especially when the silencer is used in harsh environments. The interior lining can get clogged and the acoustic fill can get covered by dust and diesel soot, thus reducing the silencer performance. Periodic cleaning of the interior casing can increase the attenuation capacity of a silencer by 6 to 9 dB(A) (Dabson & Acuña, 2017). However, this requires a special silencer design in which the inner cartridge can be removed, the sound absorbing material replaced, the inner casing cleaned and the whole set retrofitted. A number of techniques can be used to reduce auxiliary fan noise in underground mines. These range from selecting the right fan for the job to installing adequate silencers. The choice depends on the air quantity requirement at the working place, cross-sectional area of the opening, duct diameter, fan type (axial or centrifugal) and local restrictions. Auxiliary ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard rock mines are presented here. Factors such as fan type, rotational speed, duct diameter, and silencer-duct arrangements and their effects on noise attenuation are discussed."

This paper is an update on a paper presented at the 2022 ISEE conference. The original paper presented how the mine operator desired to open up ore reserves near several mine structures including two crushers, the conveyor belt drive and the concentrator thickeners. In order to open up additional ore for extraction (over 3 million long tons or 3 million tonnes) it was necessary to blast out two benches near the mine structures. Since the two benches have been successfully shot, the mine has now conducted nine production blasts in this area at distances as close as 116 m (380 ft) to the two primary crushers. These production blasts are full size production blasts consisting of up to 300 or more blast holes. For these blasts the two primary crushers were still the critical structures as they were the production life blood of the mine. If the crushers were shut down due to any damage from the blasting, the revenue of the mine would be adversely affected. As with the initial bench blasts, two issues provided an extra challenge to the blast design. The first was that the blast holes were still considered large diameter at 12¼ inches (311 mm) and 16 inches (406 mm). The second issue was that the bench heights were short, with the average varying from 34-40 ft (10.3-12.2 m). This combination of large diameter blast holes with a short bench provided an unfavorable geometry for the goals established by the mine management. The mine management established the following goals. 1) None of the mine structures would be damaged by fly-rock. 2) Minimize the blast vibrations at the crushers. 3) The last goal was to produce a muck pile that could be dug easily by hydraulic shovels. Electronic detonators were applied to achieve the necessary control of the blast and optimal fragmentation throughout the mine. UAV surveys of the blast area were also conducted to provide a 3-D representation of the free faces and bench surface. The 3-D point cloud produced from this was used to measure the shape of the free faces. Once the shape of the free faces was quantified, it was possible to establish proper placement of the crest holes and develop a custom explosive load for each blast hole. The results of the nine blasts have provided what the customer requested. The peak vibration level at the crushers for the nine production blasts was 1.6 in/s (40.6 mm/s) at a frequency of 18.9 Hz. There have been no fly-rock or blast vibration issues at any of the nearby mine structures. As a result, the mine has been able to maintain its production with no downtime. The muck piles have been well fragmented with reports from the shovel that they have all dug well.

"In mechanized tunneling the annular gap between the segmental lining and the surrounding soil caused by tunnel driving, must be backfilled almost instantaneously with an adequate grouting mortar. The objective of this research is to perform a fully three dimensional modeled parametric study using FLAC 3D and evaluate the effects of backfill grouting on the tunneling performance. The research focuses on comparisons between different injection materials and state-of-the-art Bi-Component grout and their effects on the settlements on the surface. The research consists of testing a regular situation of tunnel excavation using a shielded machine with face under pressure. The tunnel dimensions and the soil properties are selected as close as possible to the reality and based on Turin Metro case. 1 INTRODUCTION Excavation of tunnels in urban areas can induce ground movements, which have negative effects on existing structures. In such scenarios, shield tunneling has become a well-accepted construction method in various ground conditions. It is characterized by relatively complex interactions between the soil, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) itself, the tunnel lining and the tail void grout. The problem to control the settlement depends on the face pressure, ground properties and back filling procedure and material of the tail void. The face pressure acts against the front to guarantee the face stability. In case of EPB TBMs the stability of the tunnel face is ensured through the excavated soil itself, which is conditioned and is maintained in compressed state within the excavation chamber. When excavating with TBMs a tail void is created between ground and the lining (Fig.1) after the TBM excavation and ring assembly that must be backfilled instantaneously by injecting the backfill material through the TBM’s tail shield. The process is of primary importance as it reduces the surface settlements and creates an immediate link between the ground and lining, sealing against ground water and leakage, reducing the differential movements between segments and providing long-term stability. The most used backfilling materials are: Inert mixtures that do not contain cement instead sometimes they are replaced by fly ash or other substitutes. A typical design of an inert mortar consists of sand, fly ash, bentonite and water. Pea gravel, which is constituted of granular materials with grain size ranging from 8 to 12 mm. This mixture is highly recommended for tunnels being constructed in rock mass with little deformation rates.Cement mortar is composed of cement, water, aggregates and sometimes bentonite. Cement controls the principle mechanical property of the mix, which can reach high values of 15-20 MPa in 28 days. The aggregates contribute towards the shear strength and reduce the pumpablity of the mix (Thewes and Budach, 2009). The reduced active systems have a cement content of 50-100 kg/m3, whereas the active system the binder component derives full hydration with cement content of over 200 kg/m3 ."

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

"The bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements when external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements rationally.Three points bending tests are conducted to investigate the bending tensile properties of cement-treated soils in this study. Cement-treated soils mixed in a laboratory are used in the bending tests. The test specimens are prepared with the several mixing properties to study the relationship between the tensile properties and unconfined compressive strength qu. Bending tensile strength Tfb and fracture energy Gf of the cement-treated soils are evaluated from the load-deflection curves obtained from the bending tests. The experimental results indicate that Tfb and Gf are approximately proportional to qu.INTRODUCTIONThe ground improvement by deep mixing has been widely used for structure foundations, retaining walls and liquefaction mitigations. Recently column and wall shaped ground improvements by deep mixing method have been applied for economical reason. When external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements appropriately.Namikawa et al. (2007) conducted the finite element analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, an improved ground consisting of several grids in a line was chosen to study the basic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground. Fig. 1 shows a example of calculated tensile failure zones in the improved soil during the earthquake. Half of one section of the improved soil consisting of two grids in a line for the 8 m × 8 m grid was modeled in the case. In Fig. 1, the failure occurs at the bottom and upper corners of the improved soil grid. The analysis result indicates that the constitutive model which can appropriately evaluate tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils is required to evaluate the performance of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, the elasto-plastic model developed by Namikawa and Mihira (2007) was adopted for the cement-treated soil behavior. The elasto-plastic model can suitably describe the tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils. In the elasto-plastic model, tensile fracture energy is adopted to determine a tensile softening relationship because it is difficult to directly measure the stress-strain relationship after the peak stress state in direct tension tests. However there is little experimental study on the tensile fracture energy of cement-treated soils."
