"Underground coal mining in the U.S. is conducted in numerous regions where previous workings exist above and/or below an actively mined seam. Miners know that overlying or underlying fully extracted coal areas, also known as gob regions, can result in abutment stresses that affect the active mining. If there was no full extraction, and the past mining consists entirely of intact pillars, the stresses on the active seam are usually minimal. However, experience has shown that in some situations there has been sufficient yielding in overlying or underlying pillar systems to cause stress transfer to the adjoining larger pillars or barriers, which in turn, transfer significant stresses onto the workings of the active seam. In other words, the overlying or underlying pillar system behaves as a ""pseudo gob."" The presence of a pseudo gob is often unexpected, and the consequences can be severe. This paper presents several case histories, summarized briefly below, that illustrate pseudo gob phenomenon:• Pillar rib degradation at a West Virginia mine at 1100-foot (335 m) depth that contributed to a rib roll fatality.• Pillar rib deterioration at a Western Kentucky mine at 570-foot (175 m) depth that required pillar size adjustment and installation of supplemental bolting.• Roof deterioration at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1300- foot ( 400 m) depth that stopped mine advance and required redirecting the section development.• Coal burst on development at an eastern Kentucky mine at 1700-foot (520 m) depth that had no nearby pillar recovery.• Coal burst on development at a West Virginia mine at the relatively shallow depth of 1100 feet (335 m) that also had no nearby pillar recovery.The paper provides guidance so that when an operation encounters a potential pseudo gob stress interaction the hazard can be mitigated based on an understanding of the mechanism encountered.INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. underground coal mining industry has conducted mining in multiple seam environments, where the active mining has underlying or overlying old workings at varying interburden distances, throughout its history. Often no serious consequences arise from the multiple seam mining. However, sometime mines have been confronted with hazards from underlying or overlying workings that include localized roof and rib failure, pillar system failures through propagating roof falls and floor heave, and also pillar bursts."

"Mines around the world are inherently and operationally diverse. Current methodologies for the design of mine ventilation and cooling infrastructure involve controlling major safety and health hazards. Globally, it can be estimated that mine ventilation systems from various commoditiescirculate over 150 000 m3/s of exhaust air through shafts. Additionally, over 2 000 000 workersare transported every day through shafts in labour-intensive mining countries like China, India,Southern Africa, and the Americas. A key objective of this paper is to share experiences and provide a case for the revision of ætime-honouredÆ ventilation design parameters based on a benchmarking exercise on design exhaust shaft velocity from various global operations (gold, diamond, platinum, coal and base metals). An active fi eld observation on exhaust shaft velocity has indicated that, regardless of the commodity or continent where the mine operates, almost all life-of-mine (LOM) design parameters provided are in the same range of 20 m/s to 22 m/s, which is not convincing considering signifi cant variations exist in shaft depths, geography, commodity, operating and capital costs. From a due diligence perspective, there are no documented views that are available on the most widely used design exhaust air velocity. Based on the global exhaust shaft velocity data, it is noted that a significant portion of shaft velocities are outside the current design velocity of 20 m/s (some operating up to 30 m/s) and other signifi cant portions of the exhaust shafts operate in the critical velocity range. In the case of Australian coal mines, limited data suggests that none of the mines have ever reached the LOM design exhaust shaft velocity. It is self-evident that when the shafts are not operating at their design quantities either the mine system resistance is low or the ventilation and main fan is operating ineffi ciently. The most common reasons given for not reviewing the shaft system were, ætime-honouredÆ design parameter are being used and cannot be changed, mine fan pressure limits, possible fan blade damage, possible spontaneous combustion risks, leakage or simply did not consider such a possibility. In conclusion, the study has reiterated the historic lessons that a safe and expensive airway should not be utilised uneconomically by circulating too litt le air through it."

The western continental margin comprises of the southwest coast (Cape Comorin-Mangalore), centralwest coast or Konkan coast (Mangalore-Bombay), northwest coast (Bombay-Gulf of Kutch) and the Laccadives area. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the west coast. The richest offshore placer deposits occur along the 25 km stretch of the southwest coast from Neendakara to Kayamkulam. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the Konkan coast consist largely of silty sand, sandy silt and clay and the concentration of ilmenite is higher than the onshore. The heavy mineral concentration ranges up to 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. The heavy mineral sands extend below the clays to water depth down to 20 m. The heavy minerals sands vary in thickness from 2-10 m. Offshore placers can be mined by using wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line dredges may employ drag buckets or clamshell and hydraulic dredges suction or airlift principles. The dredges can be located on flat bottom or catamaran barges. Dredging of very near shore placers may be achieved by operating from land. The bucket ladder type of dredger has greater digging ability and hence can be deployed for mining placers which are partly consolidated or cemented or where the most valuable part of the deposit lies at the contact between the alluvium and the bedrock. This type operates very economically up to 45 m depth and needs minimum power requirement per unit dredged. Suction type hydraulic dredges can be operated very effectively up to 60 m water depths. This system is quite ideal for the inner shelf. The maximum practical economic working water depths for wire-line dredges are about 150 m. With the drag bucket modified into large net buckets, the method can be utilized to greater depths. They can be used in areas of high water currents and swells. The type of bucket can be changed readily with change in the nature of alluvium or substratum. The hydraulic suction dredge is the most suitable system for mining unconsolidated sediments. When the sediments are semi-unconsolidated, a cutter head can be mounted on the lower end of the suction pipe to agitate the seabed.

Microstructure, magnetic torque, and texture data before and after grain growth were obtained on two 3.25 pet Si-Fe specimens having initially the same cold-rolled textures and the same primary recrystallization textures. The latter textures consisted of four components, two only of which were strong; the strong components were near (120) [001] and (320) [001]. The textures of the two specimens obtained by grain growth were different. In one specimen the two weak components were converted into strong components by a secondary recrystallization process; in the other specimen the primary recrystallization texture was retained by a normal grain-growth process. The difference in behavior of the two specimens was interpreted in terms of a difference in the relative grain sizes between weak and strong components; i.e., in terms of a geometrical factor that would alter the early growth rates of grains belonging to the two weak components of the texture. Specifically the growth rate was considered as the product of two terms: a driving force and a boundary mobility. The texture changes observed are considered to favor the oriented-nucleation growth-selectivity theory more than the oriented-growth theory. WHEN primary recrystallization and grain-growth textures form as a result of annealing deformed metals or alloys, the fundamental processes involved are nucleation and growth. Knowledge, therefore, about nuclei and the factors influencing their growth is required not only for the understanding of texture development but also for its control. In the oriented-growth theory of texture formation1, 2, 3 the problem of nuclei is generally disposed of by the assumption that nuclei are available in all orientations; the theory then has to explain the final texture from the initial texture and the way boundary mobility depends on orientation. In the oriented nucleation theory of texture formation"' nuclei are considered to be present only in certain orientations but the importance of growth selectivity is still recognized. For example, the mobility of boundaries of approximately the same orientation and of the coherent type in twins is believed to be low while that of high-angle boundaries, in general, is high. Because of this the theory may be described as an oriented-nucleation growth-selectivity theory. The main feature of the oriented-nucleation theory, however, is the importance given to nuclei; i.e., how they form in specific orientations and how they grow. In the present investigation two cold-rolled single crystals were used to study the effects of growth after primary recrystallization. The cold-rolled textures and the primary recrystallization textures were determined from portions of these specimens and reported earlier.",' The two cold-rolled crystals were in the (111) [112] stable end orientation, the recrystallization textures were nearly identical and consisted of two strong components, designated M and M', which were near (120) [00l] and (320) [00l], respectively, and also some specific weak components near (111) [110] and (111) [110]. It is well recognized that a single strong component in the primary recrystallization texture may be needed for secondary recrystallization3, 5, 8 but unfortunately when this is the case the amount of material left in deviating orientation may be too small either for growth or for positive identification. The present samples proved to be almost ideal for the study of minor components and their influence on texture changes produced by growth after primary recrystallization. The results obtained are interpreted in terms of present knowledge of grain-growth processes. Experimental Procedure Two lots of silicon-iron alloy of essentially the same composition, namely, 3.25 pet Si, 0.004 C, 0.009 P, 0.010 S, 0.035 Mn, 0.070 Ni, 0.090 Cu, 0.009 Sn, with traces of A1 and Cr and the balance Fe, were converted into single crystals 0.025 in. thick and 1.25 in. wide. The orientations were predetermined by the method of reorienting a seed crystal as described elsewhere.3 pecimen 1 from one lot had the (335) [556] orientation while specimen 2 from the second lot had the (111) [112] orientation.* Both crystals were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pet while widening approximately 20 pet. Plain carbon steels with 0.48 and 0.95 pct C were quenched and tempered at 705°C to produce carbide dispersions with spacings on the order of 1 p. The morphology of the structure consisted of a carbide-dislocation network. The strengthening due to the dispersion was found to vary linearly with M-½ where M is the mean free-ferrite path determined by the entire network. No preyield microstrain preceded the upper yield point. After prestraining, the lowest stress at which dislocation movement could be detected was 104 psi; this frictional stress was independent of the dispersion and prestrains up to 6.5 pct. The Cottrell-Petch equation for grain-size strengthening was used to discuss the dispersion strengthening in this investigation. The results support an impurity mechanism for the upper yield point rather than one based on the Johns ton- Gilman theory. IT was pointed out by Gensamerl that the mean free path in the matrix is the important variable which controls the degree of dispersion strengthening. Gensamer's data on steels showed a linear relationship between the yield point and the logarithm of the mean free-ferrite path. The first theory was by Orowan,2 who suggested the mechanism of dislocations bowing between particles, with the resulting relationship that where a is the yield point, P is the distance between particles, and G is the shear modulus. The Orowan equation applies to that range of dispersion where P is large compared to the particle size and the particles are not coherent, so that the matrix is essentially free of internal stresses. As was pointed out by Orowan, there are different degrees of dispersion which, in turn, will influence the strength-controlling mechanism. However, in this investigation, we wish to confine ourselves to the region of coarse dispersion, where the Orowan mechanism should, intuitively, be applicable. It was soon evident that the data, which existed at about the time that the Orowan theory was proposed, did not agree with the Orowan equation in that the actual strengthening was always greater than the theoretical predictions. Thus, Fisher, Hart, and pry3 modified the Orowan theory by suggesting that the Orowan process took place in the microstrain region preceding macroscopic yielding and the subsequent, rapid work hardening in the form of residual dislocation loops around the particles largely determined the observed macroscopic yield point. The F-H-P theory stated that the increment of strengthening due to the work-hardening mechanism was proportional to f3/2 where f is the volume fraction of the precipitate. F-H-P used data by Shaw, Shepard, Starr, and Dorn4 on A1 3-5 pct Cu to support their theory. Roberts, Carruthers, and Averbach5 were the first to make a microstrain study of dispersion strengthening, and they found that for steel the Gensamer relationship was obeyed. Hayman and Nutting6 suggested that in the case of tempered steel 1) the ferrite grain boundary was the primary obstacle and 2) the carbide particles simply formed part of the grain boundary obstacles. They found that the strength varied as G"" where G is the ferrite grain size. Turkalo and LOW' determined the structure of quenched and tempered plain carbon steel using a replica technique; they concluded that the carbide particles did not necessarily lie in the ferrite grain boundaries. When they defined the mean free-ferrite path as being determined by both particles and the ferrite path boundaries, their data obeyed the Gensamer relationship. Meiklejohn and skoda8 showed that the strengthening from iron particles in mercury was a function of the particle size and the distance between particles. Dew-Hughes9 explained the Meiklejohn and Skoda results by the following theory: 1) grown-in dislocations which surrounded the particles were produced by the thermal stresses during the time the material was cooled to the testing temperature, and 2) the observed strengthening was associated with the cutting of the grown-in dislocations by the glide dislocations. Ansell and Lenel10 proposed a theory in which the glide dislocations pile-up or surround the particle until the number of dislocations in the pile-up is sufficient to yield or fracture the particle. The resulting theory says that the yield point varies as p-1/2, where P is the distance between particles. The Ansell-Lenel theory is almost identical to the

Studies made with a captive bubble apparatus on the sulfidization and collection by amyl xanthate of true chrysocolla specimens have defined the ranges of pH value and sulfide concentration which permit contact between the bubble and the mineral surface. Titanium compounds were the most effective of the materials found to activate the sulfidization of chrysocolla. With titanium activation, the contact angles and the ranges of pH value and sulfide wncentration giving bubble contact were all increased. Chrysocolla ores were concentrated by flotation. Chrysocolla ores occur at many localities in grade and quantity sufficient to make mining and millin feasible, but no satisfactory method of concentratio has been found. Although chrysocolla may be leached with acid, only those ores without acid-consuming gangue may be leached economically. Because of its potential importance, a study of the conditions nece sary for flotation of chrysocolla has been carried ou The literature contains a few references to flotation of chrysocolla. Two methods were developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.1,2 The first consisted of a fatty acid soap and a high xanthate as collectors of chrysocolla from a synthetic ore, while the second involved the use of hydrogen sulfide and xanthate. Ludt and DeWitt3 demonstrated the difference in adsorptive powers of chrysocolla and quartz for bas triphenyl methane dyes and suggested the use of butyl, hexyl or octyl-substituted malachite green as collector. Jackel4 emphasized the effects of combin tions of reagents such as Aerofloat 31, pine oil, and Reagents 404 and 425 with sodium sulfide and zinc hydrosulfite as conditioning agents. Although he reported recoveries of 89% from a synthetic ore and 98% from a natural ore containing azurite, malachite, chalcopyrite and chrysocolla, careful application of Jackel's method to chrysocolla from Tyrone, N.M., failed to give a high recovery. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE Samples from Inspiration, Ariz., and Tyrone and Magdalena, N. M., were used for experimentation and verified as true chrysocolla by leaching tests, specific gravity tests and X-ray diffraction. Chrysocolla does not dissolve at pH 4, although malachite and azurite do. Chrysocolla is about half as dense as the copper carbonates. X-ray diffraction analyses by the powder camera method confirmed the samples as true chrysocolla. A captive bubble apparatus, which cast an enlarged image of the air bubble and the mineral surface upon a screen, was used to check on the character of the surfaces. The specimens were prepared by grinding a flat surface on a glass plate using fine abrasive; then they were washed and kept in distilled water until they were to be treated with reagents. Before each reagent treatment, the specimen was carefully checked for cleanliness in the captive bubble apparatus. It was assumed that the surface was clean if, after fine grinding and washing of the specimen, the bubble would not stick. Specimens were handled with glass forceps, and precautions were taken to avoid contamination of the mineral surfaces. Contact angle measurements were carefully made several times on each treated specimen to obtain reliable average values. EFFECT OF pH VALUE AND SODIUM SULFIDE CONCENTRATION In each experiment, a specimen with a freshly ground surface was immersed for 10 min in a solution of sodium sulfide, washed and immersed for 15 min in a solution containing 30 mg per 1 of potassium amyl xanthate. The specimen was then washed again in distilled water and tested for contact angle in the captive bubble apparatus while submerged in distilled water. In this series of experiments, the pH of the sulfidizing solution was varied from 3 to 7, and the concentration of sodium sulfide, containing 60% Na2S, was varied from 50 to 650 mg per 1. Many combinations of pH value and sulfide concentration resulted in no contact between the bubble and the surface, but over a limited range of conditions, contact angles varying from 24ºto 52ºwere obtained. The data in Fig. 1 show sulfidization conditions that lead to bubble contact and those that do not. The region of contact is surprisingly small, which may indicate why flotation of chrysocolla involving sulfidization has proven so difficult in practice. Proper control of the moisture content of natural gas is essential to reliable operation of gas transmission and distribution facilities serving northern markets. The moisture content of natural gas is usually determined by dew point measurement at the existing pressure. For any gas of constant moistrire content. the dew Point varies with the pressure. A correlation of the data of several investigators is prezented in graphical form by the authors. These data were correlated by the authors and F. M. Townsend, C. C. Tsao. M. I). Rogers. Jr.. and J. A. Porter. graduate students in chemi(.a1 engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Of articular interest are the hitherto unpublished low temperature data observed by Wickliffe Skinner. Jr., which are included in this correlation. PRESENTATION OF DATA The problem of interpreting water dew points, or saturation temperatures. of natural gas in terms of specific moisture con-tent has increased in importance during the past decade bec.arl.;e of extensive development.; in the transmission and petro-chemical phases of the natural gas industry. Virtually all gas transported to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low water vapor content to prevent hydrate formation in transmission and distribution lines and resultant interruption.; in gas deliveries. Complete dehydration is required in certain phases of tile petro-chemical industry involving low-temperature operations. It is a well-known fact that the water vapor content of pure hydrocarbon vapors and their mixtures at superatmospheric pressures cannot be predicted with accuracy by assuming validity of the ideal gas laws." Earlier interest in the general problem was concentrated on the water vapor content of pure hydrocarhons and hydrocarbon mixtures in the pressure and temperature ranges common to gas and oil producing reservoirs in order to obtain fundamental data for the improvement of production techniques and the furtherance of reservoir studies. Excellent data are published for pressures ranging from atmospheric to 10,000 psig and for temperatures ranging from 100° to 460° F4,9,10,11 and are found to be in close agreement. However, experimental data at high pressures and temperatures below 100°F are comparatively limited in scope. Experimental data in the lower temperature range have been reported by Laulhere and Briscoe.8 Deaton, et al,2,3 Hammerscllmidt,5,6 and wade," In general, the pressures employed in these investigations ranged from atmospheric to 1.000 psig while temperatures ranged from 32° to 120°F; i.e., the usual conditions encountered in gas transmission line operations, Additional data were reported by Russell, et al,12 at pressures as high as 2.000 psig and covering a rather narrow atmospheric temperature range. In 1947, Hammerschmidt published a correlation of all available data,' in which the water vapor content of gases at saturation. under high pressure and low temperature. was predicted by extrapolation. In 1948, Wickliffe Skinner. Jr.. presented data on the moisture content of a low nitrogen content gas at low temperature and at pressures ranging upward to 1.500 psia.1-3 Comparison of Skinner's experimental data with the extrapolated data of Hammerscllmidt revealed an appreciable variation in the lower temperature range. emphasizing the need for a new correlation which would rely on Skinner's data at lower temperatures. Careful scrutiny of available data suggested that presence of an appreciable quantity of nitrogen in a gas mixture may affect its saturated moisture content so that data obtained from gases with more than three per cent nitrogen were not used in this correlation. CORRELATION OF DATA Data employed in this correlation are presented in Table I. The data of Dodson and Standing.4 McKetta and Katz,9 and Olds, Sage and Lacey10 were compared and found to be in close agreement so that the data of Olds. et al, re-plotted in a more convenient form by the Humble Oil and Refining Co.,' were used for temperatures of 100°F and above. Skinner's data were used for temperatures below 40°F. Between these intermediate temperature limits, the data of Hammerschmidt.7 Wade" and extrapolated data of Olds. et al.1 were tabulated

By completing a double-track railroad cut-off, involving a large volume of cut and fill, in addition to a half-mile bridge spanning an important French river, engineers in the zone of the Services of Supply have opened up a route by means of which hours of valuable time are being saved in transporting men and materials to combat areas. Its most valuable feature is that it provides a means for by-passing a certain city where several, French railroad lines converge and where, consequently, congestion of traffic has been responsible for delayed train movements. To avoid a double-track turnout, which would have involved a cross-over cutting one of the French tracks, the two track connections of the cut-off are taken off from opposite sides of the French right-of-way. This involved running one of the new lines of the cut-off out from the main line track on a fill to a point where it could be brought back and over the French track on a steel girder bridge. Beyond this bridge the two tracks of the cut-off converge and straighten out in the standard type of double-track construction. The new cut-off is about 5 3/4 mi. (9 km.) long and has required 160,000 cu. yd. of cut (122,329 cu. m.) and 414,000 cu. yd. (316,527 cu. m.) of fill. In the biggest continuous fill a-yardage of 180,000 has been placed; the road-bed in this section-being-about 40-ft. (12 m.) above the original ground surface. The bridge portion of the cut-off, 2190 ft. (667.5 in.) long, is made up of ninety-nine 14-ft. (4.3 m.) timber spans and sixteen 50-ft. (15.3 m.) steel girder spans. This is the longest bridge which engineers of the American Expeditionary Forces have built in France. The timber spans are supported by pile trestle bents, while the longer steel girders rest on clusters of 43 piles. Two pile drivers of the steam-hammer type worked from each -end of the bridge toward the center of the river, while a drop hammer worked westward from the shore end. In this structure nearly two thousand piles 50 ft. or so in length had to be driven.

Binary Cr-A1 alloys containing from 2.5 to 30 wt pct Al and 0.7 wt pct Y were heated in oxygen, air, and nitrogen between 1000" and 1200°C. The reacLivity of the alloys was found to be dependent both on the alloy composition nnd the nature of t he atmosphere. In oxygen, nllojs containing up to 15 to 20 wt pct A1 reacted to produce an external scale of Crz03 and a subscale consisting Predominently of Al203. Alloys contazning 20 to 30 wt pct A1 react in oxygen to produce an A1203 external scale and little m no subscale. The latter alloys were markedly more oxidation resistant than those of low alurninum content. In air, the alloys on which an external Crz03 scale was formed were found to be permeable to nitrogen ns evidenced by the copious amomts of chromium and aluminum nilrides observed ns part of the subscale. The reactizities in nir (or nitrogen) of these alloys increase <m their aluminurn contents increase. However, alloys on which Al,O, us an external scale is formed were nol culnerable to nccelerated attack in air, and no eltldence of nitvide subscnles were observed. For all alloys, yttrium serwed pYimarily to improve oxide adhrence. THE role of chromium in the oxidation resistance of Fe-Cr alloys &apos;-&apos; and that of aluminum in Fe-Cr-A1 al10s&apos; has received considerable attention in recent years. This is understandable since many of these alloys have excellent oxidation resistance due to the formation of either a Cr203 or a-Ala03 film between the metal and the oxidizing atmosphere. Small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals are effective in preventing spalling of the protective oxide from the metal substrate."" In contrast, little is known regarding the oxidation resistance of Cr-A1 alloys, although some work has been done by Tumarov et a1.&apos; The poor niechanical properties exhibited by Cr-A1 alloys make them undesirable for use as structural components, but their use as coatings cannot be disregarded. The use of chromium-rich aluminide coatings for refractory metal alloys is an example of the potential use of this type of sytem. The purpose of this work is to examine the oxidation behavior of Cr-A1 alloys containing 2.5 to 30 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y. The effects of temperature, atmosphere, and thermal cycling have been determined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation can be divided into two groups. Those containing 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y were extensively evaluated in the temperature range from 1000" to 1200°C. Alloys containing 15, 20, 25, and 30 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y were tested only at 1200°C. All of the alloys were prepared by standard arc-melting techniques in the form of cylinders approximately 4 in. long and 19 in. in diam. Wafers were cut from the cylinders and subsequently subdivided into rectangular coupons. The alloys were brittle and therefore some cracks were found in almost all specimens. The coupons were prepared for oxidation by mechanically polishing through 600 grit Sic paper, and were thoroughly degreased just prior to testing. Two types of oxidation experiments were conducted, namely; cyclic tests in which the specimens were examined and weighed after each 2 hr exposure, and continuous thermal balance tests run in a controlled atmosphere (oxygen, air, or nitrogen) for 20 hr. In the former test the spalled oxide was not included when the specimens were weighed. The physical condition of a specimen was noted visually after each cycle and testing was continued either to failure or until the performance of the specimen was well characterized. Both Micro and Semi-Micro Thermal Balances (Ains-worth) were used in the continuous tests. The oxidized specimens were sectioned and prepared for metal log raphic examination. The specimens were polished through 600 grit Sic paper. After polishing through 6 and l p diamond, a final mechanical polish with Linde B-Alz03 was used. Specimens containing 2.5 pct A1 were etched electrolytically using a 10 pct oxalic acid solution at 4 v for about 2 sec. Selected specimens were examined in the electron microprobe analyzer. Oxide specimens were examined by standard X-ray diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS For convenience, the test results have been broken down according to the exposure temperature, and further subdivided according to the type of test and atmosphere employed. Because of the poor quality of the specimens a larger than normal amount of scatter was observed in the measured rate constants. Also, the evaluation of the weight gain data was done on a somewhat arbitrary basis and may not be truly representative. However, the results obtained do show a significant trend in behavior regarding both alloy composition and the nature of the oxidizing atmosphere. I) Oxidation Behavior at 1000°C. A) Continuous Oxidation estsin Oxygen. This series of experiments was run in the Ainsworth Micro-Thermal Balance using pure oxygen at a pressure of 76 mm Hg. Under these conditions all specimens oxidized in accordance with the parabolic rate law over a major portion of the exposure time; the rate constants appear in Table I. The oxide formed externally on all specimens was predominantly Cr,O,, which was generally adherent. In some cases a slight amount of spalling in the form of a fine powder was noted. a-A1203 was observed as a subscale, along with Yz03 in all alloys. Alloys containing up to 7.5 wt pct A1 oxidize more rapidly than the Cr-0.7Y alloy.

T. E. Leontis (The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich.)—This paper is of particular interest to me because of my own work with F. N. Rhines on the oxidation of magnesium and magnesium alloys a few years ago. The authors are to be complimented on their development of an accurate and reproducible technique for measuring ignition temperatures and on their comprehensive study of the many variables that affect the ignition temperature of magnesium. It is indeed gratifying to see that they have obtained a good correlation between ignition temperatures and the oxidation rates reported by us. The correlation is valid not only with composition within one alloy system but also between alloy systems; that is, alloying elements which effect the greatest increase in oxidation rate also produce the greatest decrease in ignition temperature. There are a few points upon which I would like to comment. In attempting to correlate ignition-temperature data, one must be sure that the same definition of this quantity is used by all investigators. It does not appear to me that such is the case in the authors&apos; comparison of their data with the theoretically calculated values of Eyring and Zwolinski. The equation derived by these investigators defines the ignition temperature, To, as the temperature at the gadoxide interface, whereas the present authors use the metal temperature as the criterion for ignition. The contradiction in the effect of oxide-scale thickness on ignition temperature between the predictions of the Eyring-Zwolinski equation and the observations reported in this paper indicate that some variable has not been taken into consideration. Could that be the geometry and size of the specimen? There is a marked difference in the type of specimen used in this investigation and that used in our work which formed the basis of Eyring and Zwol-inski&apos;s theoretical treatment. Another factor which plays an important role in ignition is the vapor pressure or the rate of vaporization. Combustion can safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase by the reaction between vaporized magnesium and oxygen. Thus, a more accurate theoretical analysis may be made on the basis of the rate of vaporization which may be the controlling rate of the process. The effect of a large number of alloying elements on the ignition temperature has been reported in this paper, but beryllium was not included. Practical experience dictates that beryllium markedly decreases the burning tendency of magnesium. I was wondering if the authors plan to study the effect of beryllium in their future work. The authors predict that concentrations of sulphur dioxide in the furnace atmosphere greater than 5.8 pct would be expected to increase the ignition temperature to values still higher than those they measured. I would like to mention that large concentrations of sulphur dioxide markedly increase the rate of combustion of magnesium once ignition has started. Although it has been shown in the paper that the ignition temperature of magnesium in oxygen increases with increasing sulphur dioxide content up to about 1 to 2 pct, in practice relatively low-melting commercial cast alloys (AZ63A and AZ92A) are being continuously heat treated at temperatures just below the melting point in air containing 0.5 to 0.75 pct SO*. In regard to the change in color of the oxide scale observed on magnesium and magnesium alloys just prior to ignition, I would like to mention that in our work alloying elements were found to color the usually white magnesium oxide even though ignition did not occur. For example, the oxide formed on Mg-A1 alloys was gray, increasing in intensity with aluminum content in the alloy. Finally, I might suggest that the authors indicate their source of the value of 0.8 g per cc for the density of MgO as it is formed on magnesium upon oxidation at elevated temperatures. W. M. Fassell, Jr. (authors&apos; reply)—The comments by Dr. Leontis are very excellent ones and I will attempt to answer them in order. First, the problem of ignition of magnesium is a rather difficult one since many factors are involved. Concerning the comparison of the To in the Eyring-Zwolinski equation, eq 4, with the experimentally determined values, it will be noted that the calculated and experimental values of the ignition temperature in Table I are not self-consistent. In the case of the 1.78 pct A1-Mg alloy the calculated value is 49°C below the experimental value; for the 3.81 pct A1-Mg alloy, 122°C below the experimental value; for Mg with 5x10-&apos; cm film, 19°C above the experimental value; for Mg with 2x10-I cm film, 28 °C below the experimental value. Thus, if it were merely a matter of difference of location of temperature measurement the calculated ignition temperature would always be below the experimental value, the difference being due to the thermal gradient through the oxide film. The possibility of a thermal gradient in the magnesium metal must be considered. From Carslaw and Jaeger,&apos;Y t can be shown that the maximum temperature gradient that could exist between the oxide-metal interface and the center of the sample is of the order of O.Ol°C. The geometry and size of the specimen could certainly have some effect on the ignition temperature. The equation for ignition that has been proposed in reference 14 is of the following type containing terms to account for this and other factors: M dT AHv(T) =Cp--------------\-J(.T—TB) + ZAHl-M A dx where AH is the heat of reaction, v(T) is the velocity of the reaction at temperature, Cp is the heat capacity of sample, M is the mass of sample, A is the area of sample, t is time, J is the total coefficient of heat transfer outward from the reaction zone, TR is the temperature of the bath or furnace, and AH,, is the heat associated with any phase change involved. Prior to the instant of ignition, the vapor pressure of magnesium is of no special significance. After ignition, neither eq 4 nor the above equation is applicable. The actual combination of magnesium cannot safely be assumed to take place in the vapor phase. While experimental data is lacking to support a hypothesis that ignition does or does not occur in the vapor phase, some observation on the pressure ignition experiments may be of interest. At high oxygen pressures, once ignition has occurred, the reaction of magnesium with oxygen approaches near explosive violence, the entire sample being consumed in probably less than 1 sec. At atmospheric pressure it usually requires 15 to 20 sec. Thus it appears that the oxygen concentration becomes the rate determining factor. Further, if burning magnesium is observed through darkened glass (Lincoln Super-visibility Shade No. 12) the magnesium sample is very much hotter than the "smoke" and the outline of the sample is retained perfectly. No "flame" is visible above the metal. No work was done on Mg-Be alloys. We do, however, intend to study this problem in the near future.

Resolution Copper Mine is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures above 80°C in rock with a high crystalline silica content. The planned run-of-mine production rate is 120 kt/day. The project is in prefeasibility evaluation. This paper discusses features of the ventilation system design, which include multiple ventilation shafts with total flow of about 3000 m³/s and both surface and underground refrigeration systems with more than 140 MW total capacity. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate, but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.

The Nancy Creek Tunnel is a deep tunnel, designed to store and convey wastewater by diverting flows from trunk sewers currently at or near capacity in the northwest of the City of Atlanta. The tunnel, constructed in hard rock, has an overall length of 13,300 m (43,700 ft), and a finished diameter of 4.9 m (16 ft). The project is currently under construction by a joint venture of Obayashi/CJB for the City’s Department of Watershed Management. This paper describes the contractor’s techniques and equipment, as well as discussing challenges which were overcome. The project is scheduled to be complete in October 2005.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. The DOT Tunneling method combines two conventional earth pressure balance shield machines in an overlapping cylindrical arrangement. The method allows two tunnels to be driven simultaneously with mini¬mum cross sectional area. Two full size trials, one configured horizontally and one vertically stacked, were successfully completed employing the DOT method. The method was then utilized for the new transportation system. The goggle-shaped DOT machine, 9.36 m high by 15.86 m wide, is the largest earth pressure balance shield machine in the world. This paper includes a general description of the DOT tunneling method as well as a history of its development.

Sydney Australia’s M5 East Motorway connects southwestern suburbs to the airport. Central to the project are twin 3.8 km roadway tunnels which are mostly driven through rock. In order to come up with the winning tender, the project team developed several unique approaches for tunnel excavation and support. The project’s flat roof with thin shotcrete lining, 20 m wide underground intersections, thixotropic-grout sheathed rockbolts and cablebolts, and new shotcrete testing methods all differ significantly from traditional concepts. This paper presents the design basis and construction methods used to achieve the 100-year design life required by the project’s owner.

A probabilistic slope stability computer model was developed at Utah State University and independently evaluated by CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers as a design and analysis tool. Volume I of this report describes the model and Volumes III and IV are users manuals for the computer programs. This volume (Volume II) constitutes the report by the CH2M Hill. It includes a description of a field investigation and stability analysis of an existing tailings dam. Based on the results of the analysis, the tailings dam was evaluated for redesign using probabilistic considerations. Conclusions are made regarding the usefulness of the model as a design tool.

Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering real-time dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer (i.e., with cyclone and pump configuration), was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.
