Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

Drilling in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. TO explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927 our firm was engaged by two organizations1 for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data this far collected. As a result of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined: one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel;2 the other, near Hetten-schlag, was briefly discussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the stratigraphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes; and to indicate the new geological outlookwhich such a discovery suggests. Stratigraphy In the southern part of the Rhine graben the Oligocene rests almost directly on the Middle Jurassic and consists, in ascending order, of: 1. Green marls, not salt-bearing, composed of fresh and brackish water deposits. 2. Middle stage, salt-bearing, consisting of lower-schistose marls and upper, variegated marls. 3. Blue marls, not salt-bearing, but including gypsum deposits; hence sediments laid down in a bay more or less connected with the sea.

The detonating compound cyanuric triazide was discovered*** and patented**** by Erwin Ott, and on account of his claims, the Bureau of Ordnance, U. S. Navy, desired more complete data, so an investigation was made. The results obtained were such that the Bureau of Crdnance recommended publication thereof for the benefit of the explosives industry. Some of the patent claims regarding cyanuric triazide are as follows: 1. It is not poisonous in contradistinction to fulminating mercury and lead azide. 2. In contradistinction to the hitherto employed priming agents it is fusible, and its fusion point (94°C) is so low that the product melted by a single heating in water or steam bath, can be poured without danger in the capsule shell. It solidifies therein after cooling, and shows the density of 1.5. 3. It has been determined that the cyanuric triazide, in spite of its very much higher priming actions, is much less brisent then ful- minating mercury and lead nitride. 4. The chemically pure cyanuric triazide (C3M2) constitutes colorless crystals melting at 94°0., and is not volatile. It is not affected by cold water, and only slowly saponified by hot water. It is relatively insensitive to friction and not too strong concussion, but explodes by impact or when hea ted to 170°C., or when heated suddenly. It is not more sensitive to friction and shocks then fulminating mercury. 5. The preparation of the triazide is preferably carried out by acting with an excess of sodium azide in an aqueous solution; in the cold, on cyamric chloride gradually suspended in the said solution.

"Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. INTRODUCTION Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) will build and operate a roadway tunnel under the Borphorus connecting Kazlicesme on the European side and Goztepe on the Asian side, to provide additional road-access across the Strait and consist of three main parts as shown in Figure 1."

Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, operates the Bulyanhulu gold mine. The operation has been in commercial production since April 2001 and is the first modern underground mine to be developed on the Lake Victoria goldfield in Tanzania. Bulyanhulu is located in a major mineralised system along an emerging gold trend. This area, the Lake Victoria Greenstone belt, has been the focus of significant exploration and development programs since 1994, with over 34 million ounces of gold having been discovered and four new mines commissioned. The Bulyanhulu project has accounted for just over a third of the gold resources discovered during this period. From an initial exploration program, which outlined a resource of 1.37 million ounces of gold, Bulyanhulu now hosts a reserve of some 12 million ounces in a resource base, the limits of which are, as yet, undefined. The Bulyanhulu property is located approximately 56 km south of Lake Victoria, in northwestern Tanzania, eastern Africa. A Mining Licence issued by the Government of Tanzania on July 23, 1999 grants to KMCL the exclusive right to mine a concession area covering 51.48 km2. The property is reached via a 75-km road from the main road to Dar es Salaam. The nearest towns are Mwanza to the north on Lake Victoria, 155 km by road and ferry, Kahama, 86 km by road to the south and Isaka, 126 km by road. Isaka is on the rail line between Mwanza and Dar es Salaam and has facilities to receive heavy equipment, and a fuel depot. A gravel airstrip, 1,700 m long has been constructed at the property.

The high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,' in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. Shape and Size of Centrifugal Liquid Crucibles When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape of a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 1/2 in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. Fig. 1, a photograph of sections of the cylinders, shows the effect of speed of rotation of the containers upon the shape of the inner surface of the rotating liquid crucibles. "The effects of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size on the dissolution rate of synthetically prepared calcium molybdate were investigated. Dissolution of calcium molybdate in oxalic acid solutions takes place as a series - parallel type reaction. In the first reaction step, which proceeds according to the ""Langmuir - Hinshelwood Mechanism"", calcium aqua oxalato molybdate is formed as a complex chelate intermediate product. In the second reaction step, molybdic acid is formed during the slow hydrolysis of calcium aqua oxalato molybdate, and it reacts rapidly with oxalic acid to form the polymeric hydrogen oxalate dimolybdate chelate as an end product. Activation energies were calculated as 41.4 and 49.9 kJ mol-1 for the first and zero order reactions. The fractional conversion versus time relationship can be given by the following equation.IntroductionMolybdenum is used widely in electric-electronic, metal working, aerospace and aeronautic, nuclear, glass and petrochemical industries because of its high melting temperature and resistance against chemical effects. However, the largest molybdenum consumers are the iron-steel and super alloy industries where molybdenum is used as an alloying element. Industrially important molybdenum minerals are limited to molybdenite (M0S2), powellite (CaMo04) and wulfenite (PbMo04), which are considered as primary molybdenum resources. Secondary molybdenum resources are spent catalysts and scrap [1-4].Molybdenum has been produced by pyrometallurgical processes in the past. Since it is possible to process low grade molybdenum ores and industrial wastes by hydrometallurgical processes, which are more environmentally friendly than pyrometallurgical processes, the importance of the use of hydrometallurgical processes has increased in the molybdenum production industry."

ALTHOUGH annealing twins are frequently observed in many fcc metals, their occurrence in aluminum is relatively rare. ~ahn' in his review of twinning has listed only a few references to observations of twins in aluminum, e.g., Refs. 2 and 3. They have also been shown to occur in evaporated aluminum layers.4 During the present work, several annealing twins were studied in aluminum. The specimens of 1099-grade aluminum had the following thermomechanical treatment: deformed 90 pct by rolling, partially re-crystallized, further deformed 60 pct to a final thickness of 100 p, then annealed for 24 hr at 120°C. This treatment produced several annealing twins—-about ten per electron microscope specimen. The specimens were produced by the window technique and examined in a Phillips E.M. 200 operating at 100 kv. A typical twin boundary is shown in Fig. 1. For several of the twins studied the twin plane could be tilted so that it was parallel to the electron beam, e.g., Fig. 2. The associated diffraction pattern, Fig. 3, shows the twinned relationship between the grains. The twinning plane in each case was (111). Use of a reflection common to both the twin and the matrix,* i.e., using reflecting planes parallel in the twin and the matrix, the coherent twin boundary becomes invisible and only the noncoherent segments of the stepped boundary are seen, e.g., Fig. 4. Trace analysis of the boundaries showed that the long straight portions were invariably the twin plane; i.e., these portions are coherent. The planes of the shorter segments are shown by Fig. 5 to be (551 1, (7111, and {211).

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Candelaria silver mine is located in an arid, isolated desert setting in Sections 3 and 4, T.3N., R.35E., and Section 33, T.4N., R.35E., Mineral County, Nevada (Fig. 1). Silver was discovered in 1863 by Mexican explorers, and high grade silver veins were mined from the early 1870s through the 1880s. Essentially all mining had ended by 1890. The veins were mined by underground methods typical of the period. As is the case in many mining districts, Candelaria was studied and explored by a number of companies. All these efforts were terminated short of mine development because of low silver prices and difficult metallurgy. On March 1, 1976, Occidental Minerals (Oxymin) entered into a Limited Partnership agreement, known as Candelaria Partners, as General Partner with Congdon and Carey Ltd. No. 4. Prior to the agreement, Congdon and Carey had acquired the candelaria properties as part of a bullish silver program and did considerable exploration which indicated the possibility of a large reserve of shallow silver mineralization. GEOLOGY AND ORE DEPOSITS Silver and gold mineralization in the Candelaria district occurs in high-grade fissure veins with silver values ranging from 0.6 to 7.8 kg/t (20 to 250 oz per st). These veins, combined with the low grade disseminated mineralization in the intervening material between the veins, form Manto- like deposits 15 to 46 m (50 to 150 ft) thick. Three such deposits are found in the Candelaria district: the Lucky Hill, Mount Diablo, and Northern Belle deposits (Figs. 2 and 3). The average ore grade of the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo [ ]

INTRODUCTION The practice of injecting chemical grouts into permeable soils in order to stabilize them for tunnel construction is a common procedure in Great Britain, Europe and Japan. In this technique, the grout penetrates the soil in a fluid condition, but hardens or "sets-up" in about one hour due to a chemical reaction. As a result, the soil, is strengthened and made less pervious, and this, in turn, reduces ground surface movements, limits ground water flow, and controls movements of the heading during tunnel construction. It is only within the last five years or so that this technology has been used in the United States. Most of the applications have been involved in the work for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) subway construction. The experience gained from this work is, in many instances, unique and should serve to guide use of the grouting technology in future projects. This paper documents five WMATA case histories; information is provided as to the soil conditions, method of treatment, reason for treatment, and tunnel performance. Locations of the five projects covered by this study are indicated in Figure 1. All are within the boundaries of the District of Columbia and involve soft ground tunnel construction. Basic information for the case histories is given in Table 1. Tunnel sizes and depths below the ground surface as well as general soil conditions are similar in all instances. The tunnels are about six meters in diameter and are located so that the crown is five to ten m below the ground surface. The soils typically consist of alternating sand, clay and silty sand strata. "The one point left off the table was pumping costs, i.e. the cost of pumping to the cyclones.At East Malartic 5 x 5 S R L pumps that had been used to pump the classifier overflow were used to pump the rod and ball mill discharges to the cyclones. Maintenance costs on the pumps rose from $105 in 6 months to $1000 per month. The pumps had to be operated at 1150 rpm and impellers lasted only 5 to 6 days. These pumps were replaced by 6 x 6 S R. L. pumps operating at 825 rpm, but at this speed the coarser sands settled and plugged the pipe lines and the speed was increased to 925 rpm. The maintenance cost is now $100 per m::rnth which is 0 003 cents per ton milled. The impellers now last 1 month and the casing linings 6 months.Density meters are often used on cyclone overflows and sometimes on the cyclone feed. Haliburton weighted tube density meters are used in some plants. They are cheaper than the radioactive density controller, $2500 as compared to $ 6000The angle of the discharge spray from the apex can be used to judge the quality of perform1nce of a cyclone.For ordinary metallurgical applications the inside slope of the cyclone is not too important but for fine separation steeper slopes are used.The cyclone is a versatile tool and will handle considerable variations in feed tonnage - probably up to 15%. Above this variation the number of cyclones used has to be increased or decreased or the tonnage fed to them has to be adjusted"

Deepening of harbours has become a priority, necessary to the ongoing operation of the wharves in the face of deeper draft merchant vessels and cruise ships. It is now standard practice in many areas to provide for harbours to be dredged to significant depths below mean sea level, in the order of 12.00 m (39 ft) for existing berths and 15.00 m (49 ft) for new wharf construction. The Ravenna Port Authority initiated a project to deepen the harbour bottom at selected wharves to a depth of 12.00 m (39 ft). In preference to reconstruction of the wharves with longer and heavier sheet piling or other equally disruptive reconstruction, they identified the structural reinforcement of the existing wharves by means of deep underwater tie rods as a possible alternative cost-effective solution. Having defined the design concept, effort was concentrated on developing the required technology. A technique, already in use for the installation of tie rods by means of robotics, was identified as potentially suitable for underwater use. It was decided to carry out the fine tuning and the evolution of the technology for a marine environment of the robot unit and of the related remote control software that controls the installation of the tie rods. An experimental test site was set up to refine the drilling, installation, grouting, monitoring and testing of underwater tie rods. The purpose was to confirm the feasibility of the proposed solution and the reliability of these tie rods for use in the reinforcement and construction of wharves. The paper also discusses the theoretical and experimental study of underwater tie rods dealing with the theoretical analysis of the interaction between tie rod and soil, aimed at identifying the correlation between the forces of applied traction and the corresponding measured elongations. A series of tests were carried out with positive results, both at the operating load of 300 kN (67 kips) and at the nominal maximum load of 630 kN (142 kips). The tests were carried out on seven tie rods, of which three were installed at a depth of 5.00 m (16 ft), principally to test the reliability of the operating and remote control systems in the presence of a significant hydrostatic pressure, and four were placed at a depth of 8.00 m (26 ft) to check the load bearing capability of the tie rods positioned at the depth called for by the current project.

"A new raw water intake from the South Holston River to the Kingsport water treatment plant is under construction. The exploration for the 335 meter long horseshoe shaped tunnel design took advantage of the site topography along the alignment to better define the complex geology consisting of Knox Limestone and Sevier Shale formations separated by a fault zone. To assess the geological conditions and to determine the extent of the fault zone, a 183 meter long horizontal boring and geophysical investigation was performed along a portion of the tunnel’s horizontal alignment. Explorations defined the fault zone width at approximately 5 meters and packer testing along the alignment provided a means of estimating groundwater inflows. As the tunnel excavation advances, comparisons of exploratory data versus encountered conditions will be made. This paper provides details on the geotechnical investigation, lessons learned, and the influence of the geology on the tunnel design. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kingsport WTP is supplied with raw water via the South Holston River. The City of Kingsport (City) owns and operates the Kingsport Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The existing raw water intake system, consisting of pumps, power supply, raw water piping and appurtenant facilities has been determined to be vulnerable to failure. The original Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) was constructed in 1928 as part of the original Kingsport WTP project. The 1928 RWPS operated until 1970 when it was replaced by the existing RWPS. This existing system still utilizes the 1928 piping and piping tunnel. Improvements to the RWPS hydraulics and capacity are required to meet the City’s future water treatment needs. The system extracts water from the South Fork of the Holsten River and coveys it via three pressure pipelines to the WTP. The conveyance piping exits the RWPS, ascends approximately 23 m up a near vertical rock outcropping then enters a 120 m long tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel the piping continues underground to the WTP. The drill and blast tunnel is horseshoe shaped and nominally 3.3 m high by 3.3 m wide. The easternmost 62.3 m of the tunnel is without any type of support. The remainder is lined with concrete. According to the City of Kingsport, the concrete lining was installed in the 1970’s as part of upgrades to the facility. An evaluation of the current facilities concluded that the conveyance piping was in poor condition and required replacement."

Minerals and Metals Group Pty Ltd (Golden Grove Mine) commissioned a comprehensive study of the life of mine using advanced 3D stress modelling. Essential input into the modelling was the proposed mining sequence, itself the culmination of years of planning and geotechnical experience gained in comparing actual performance to predictions. The modelling approach addressed the whole of mine at a scale of 5 km. There were however several magnitudes of scale to address, from the scale of laboratory testing (0.05 m), to drive size (5 m), extraction size (50 m) and stope size (500 m). Scaling was therefore an integral part of the procedure. The constitutive rock properties in terms of peak and post-peak behaviour varied with the scale. At the laboratory scale, the constitutive relationships for all the main rock units were determined in 3D as well as recovering the in situ stress using the rock memory technique, deformation rate analysis (DRA), whereas at the larger scale the properties were varied to match observations.The modelling, using non-linear analysis to account for rock mass yield and peak-residual strength, demonstrated that if the planned extraction sequence and stope geometry had been pursued there was a high probability of large volumes of excess shear stress being released. However, it was not possible to identify whether the excess shear stress (ESS) will release as one large event or many smaller events. The mining approach was to modify the extraction sequence/stope geometry to manage the hazard. This is where the economic advantage can be realised.Alternatively or in combination with further modelling, the volume identified with the predicted high ESS or energy release could be intensively explored for structures having adverse orientation to the stress change and with sufficient areal extent to release the ESS. The microseismic data can be interrogated for the likelihood of a large event to support the hypothesis of a singular release versus multiple releases of smaller events. If the initial planned extraction sequence had to proceed as designed, changes to dimensioned stopes would be recommended for risk mitigation. The flowability of the caved rock masses in the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is of great importance. During the blasting process of a SLC-ring, the caved rock mass in front of the ring is compacted. As a result of this compaction, the mechanical properties of the fractured rock masses change, for example void ratio, angle of internal friction and structure of the compacted material. The changed mechanical properties of caved rock mass and recent blasted material can influence the mobility of the material, which could result in blockage of the flow path of the material. The identification of the involved mechanisms in this process can be done after a series of tests in different scales. However, there is no available equipment for dynamic measurements during blasting, ie velocity and displacement of the burden and in the caved masses. This study focuses on the development and laboratory evaluation of a measuring system that can be installed in a borehole. The first trial was carried out in a pillar, where two blastholes had been drilled (9.5 m) parallel with the drift and two measuring holes (16.5 m) were perpendicular to the drift. Two measuring systems were installed in the measuring holes. Some preliminary tests were carried out to find suitable initiation procedures for the emulsion explosive. Applicability and robustness of the developed measuring system were also evaluated. In addition to these tests, an expandable cement mixture was developed to firmly anchor the measuring systems in the boreholes. The measuring system consists of an anchor, armoured cable in a pulling tube and a protective case. The anchor is equipped with uniaxial and triaxial accelerometers. A potentiometric measuring system for displacement up to 2 m is installed at the end of the pulling tube and connected to an extendable spiral cable. All sensors are connected to a data acquisition system (DAS). Both measuring systems have their own DAS to acquire data in case of failure of one of the systems. The measuring system was tested in laboratory conditions with impact velocity up to 10 m/s.
