The rate has been studied of the hydrogen reduction of nickel ions in acetate -buffered solutions, using a nickel catalyst. At temperatures between 130°and 160°C, the rate is found to be proportional to the catalyst area, the nickel ion concentration, and the hydrogen pressure. The effect of hydrogen ions is to reduce the observed rate, likely by causing the reverse reaction (dissolution) to proceed. The experimental activation energy was found to be 25 kcal per mole. THE precipitation of metals and lower oxides from solution by hydrogen reduction has been quite actively investigated during the past few years.1 In the case of nickel, the kinetics of the precipitation have been studied in ammonia solution2 but extension of this study to acid solutions has not attracted much interest, largely because of the unfavorable thermodynamics at all but the lowest acidities. For example, Schaufelberger foundg that only 10 pct reduction of nickel could be effected in sulphate solutions. One kinetic study of the reduction of Ni++ has been reported by Knacke, Pawlek, and Sussmuth,4 in which the order of the reaction was found to be one in nickel ion and one-half in hydrogen pressure. No mention was made as to the part played by the nickel catalyst, or by the pH of the solution. Moreover, the activation energy reported (4 .12 kcal per mole) is so low as to lead to some question as to whether diffusion might be playing a major role in determining the kinetics. We have recently completed a study5 of the kinetics of the hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate-buffered acidic solutions whose results confirm and amplify those of Knacke et al. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The work was done in a high-pressure autoclavee by the usual technique of removing small samples of the solution for analysis. Nickel analysis was done colorimetrically by the dimethylglyoxime method.' The catalyst used was carbonyl nickel powder (Standard A powder of the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.) which was found to be composed of spheres of less than 350 mesh. The surface area of the powder was determined in this laboratory by the B. E. T. method to be 1.85 sq m (m2) per g. The catalyst was added to the solution only after the proper temperature and pressure had been reached. Agitation of the baffled system was by a turbine-type impeller, rotated at speeds between 400 and 750 rpm. The reduction rate was found to be independent of the stirring rate, so it was assumed that diffusion in the liquid does not limit the rate. In typical experiments, the nickel concentration was unchanged during an induction period of variable length. The concentration then decreased sharply, and gradually levelled off to approach the final equilibrium value. In some cases, notably at high stirring rates, the nickel concentration was found to increase considerably during the induction period, and then to decrease. In all cases, the rate was determined from the slope of the tangent to the rate curve as the concentration first decreased below the initial value. This is seen in Fig. 1. The rate measurements were found to be reproducible to within about 5 and to be quite independent of the nature or duration of the induction period. The range of conditions used is given in Table I.

"In this study, design and investigation of biogas digester consisting of methane tank with built-in solar collector to utilize solar energy for the heating of the slurry prepared from the dung and heat exchanger is designed, developed and tested. The digester was laboratory type and consists of cylindrical metallic tank of size of 0.5 m in diameter; 1 m in height and 200 liters in volume. The surface of the digester from outside was covered by thermo insulated material a glass wool, except of south side (in northern hemisphere). This side played the role of built-in collector and was blackened to increase absorption of solar irradiation and covered under 45o by glass. In the blackened side of the digester on the different heights it was installed metallic pipes for the inlet and outlet of the air, connected with heat exchanger installed inside of the digester. The heat exchanger was fixed in the level above of the inlet pipe. The horizontal plane reflector concentrates solar beams to blackened side of the digester. In the winter period, it was found that the retention time of this digester is shorter on 15% and produced biogas volume is larger on 20% with respect of ordinary biogas digester. This digester is used for the demonstrative purposes and as a teaching aid presently and base on the results it may be used for the construction of large volume digesters for use in the farms, especially located in the remote and mountain areas where the climate in the winter period is cold. Introduction At present many experts around the world have focused their efforts to energy crises because energy is one of the most important factors for the development of the society. It is known that consuming energy is proportional to quality or standard of life. There is a close relationship between energy consumption and the Gross National Product (GNP). It is obvious that for further development of the country additional sources of energy is required, which are cheap, safe and environmentally compatible with respect to the action on possible wastes. Utilization of renewable energy is one route to help in solving the above mentioned problems. In particular, biogas as a source of renewable energy is produced by biotechnology and used wide on residential scale [1]. The biogas was produced for the very first time in 1814 by Deivy from organic wastes. In 1900 production of biogas was started in Bombay (India) [2, 3]. Biogas consists of 55-70% methane (CH4) and around of 27-44% carbon dioxide (CO2) and less than 1% H2 and H2S. At present biogas is used widely in some countries for lighting, machines, and vehicles, generators, cooking and heating. Biogas generation is suitable for small to large scale operation and at present is realized in a number of developed and developing countries as USA, Hungary, China, India etc. Since 1990s biogas projects construction in China has developed steadily by the end of 1998, there were altogether 6.88 million household biogas digesters [4]. In Russia biogas digesters are used for processing of hard dung into biogas [5]. Over the last few years the very first biogas digesters were constructed in Tajikistan as well [6,7] and it was found that the digesters can work with sufficiently high efficiency in mountain areas as well ."

The effect of body movement on convective heat transfer from a man performing a block-stepping task was investigated experimentally by direct measurements of convective heat transfer. A series of experiments was conducted in which a nude man was required to stand at rest or to block step at 12 and 24 steps per minute. Wind speed, which was kept constant during each experiment, spanned the range 0,5 to 3,5 m/so Air temperature was kept constant at 43 °C in all the experiments. The results showed conclusively that the convective heat-transfer coefficient depends on the stepping rate. The effect of body motion can be regarded as being equivalent to an increase in the velocity of the free stream. The equivalent increase in air speed was found to be 0,36 and 0,77 m/s for 12 and 24 steps per minute respectively. Data from various sources, including the present study, indicate that wind speed should be increased by about 0,30,0,55, and 0,80 m/s to account for low, moderate, and vigorous body movements respectively. These findings are of direct relevance to the practical assessment of heat stress.

The mining industry has seen a flurry of merger and acquisition activity of late. Rising metal prices, increased spending on infrastructure in developing nations and the growing demand for companies to diversify have helped fuel M&A activity in this industry. Many analysts believe that the robust M&A activity will continue, particularly if the demand for mineral resources in India and China remains strong. Because prospective purchasers need to evaluate the various risks confronting target companies, acquiring mining companies requires a considerable amount of due diligence. Of these risks, environmental risk is critical and warrants significant analysis. The failure to properly assess environmental risks associated with remediation, reclamation, compliance or litigation can undermine the transaction. Such assessment is a difficult endeavor, however, due to several challenges that companies face when assessing environmental risks. To make matters more complicated, despite these challenges, many sellers ask buyers to assume all environmental risks with limited post-closing indemnification rights. This article addresses the most significant issues that commonly arise when conducting environmental due diligence and allocating environmental risk in connection with M&A transactions in the mining industry.

The Foundations of the Shear keys and alround cut off for Power House -IV of the Western Yamuna Canal Hydroelectric Project at Bhudkalan, Haryana were to be laid at a depth of 26M below the N.S.L and 24.4M below ground water table. The foundation of the drainage sump was to be laid at still higher depth, Viz 29.OM below N.S.L. The Sub soil at the site consisted of Gravel with some amount of sand. The laying of the foundation at such a great depth, at a large depth below the ground water table and that too under such difficult sub-soil conditions encountered a large no of Geotechnical problems-viz excessive seepage, side slope sloughing and sand boiling during excavation. Under the circumstances at the site, the modified foundation construction procedure i.e a battery of M. S. Troughs was placed in flowing water conditions and concreted thereafter, resulting in a sizable cut in dewatering and reducing a significant amount of time and cost of construction affecting a saving of crores of rupees at the state exchequer. Sheet Piling was used to prevent side sloughing in the foundation pit.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn).

THIS test was described in a privately circulated First Progress Report on Slacking Characteristics of Coal, by A. C. Fieldner and W. A. Selvig, May 1, 1928. The test was described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 3055, in November, 1930.1 The test, in brief, is conducted as follows: A sample of freshly mined coal consisting of 18 to 25 pieces approximating 1 ¼ cubes, and weighing 500 to 600 grams, is taken for the test. The sample is subjected to a "blank sieving" of carefully regulated degree, on an 8-in. circular sieve with 0.263-in. square openings; and the undersize and oversize weighed. The oversize is placed on a sheet-iron pan and dried for about 24 hr. in an A.S.T.M. air-drying oven maintained at 30° to 35° C. through which a current of warm air is drawn. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and immersed for one hour in water at the same temperature. The water is then drained off, the sample dried for 24 hr. as before, cooled, sieved as before, and the oversize and undersize weighed. The percentage weight of the undersize, is calculated and reported as the first cycle loss. This loss, corrected by subtracting the percentage loss in the blank sieving, is termed the slacking index. The sample may be subjected to further cycles of wetting, draining, air-drying, sieving and weighing. In a letter (August, 1932) W. A. Selvig approved making the blank sieving on a duplicate sample, rather than on the sample used for the test, where sufficient coal was available. This method is now employed in these laboratories. The accelerated weathering test has been employed in the labora-tories of the Research Council of Alberta, at Edmonton, since 1928, but not found entirely satisfactory as repeat determinations with samples taken from the same or adjacent mines frequently showed serious differ-ences. Differences must be expected as the coal may vary in the seam, and the selection of a typical set of lumps approximating 1 ¼ -in. cubes

The paper presents an analyzer and the method for the continuous determination of weight percentage of ore grains with diameter smaller than 75 µm in mineral slurries. The method is based upon the measurement of characteristic x-rays of copper excited by primary radiation of two different energies 16.5 keV and 60 keV from Pu238 and Am241 sources respectively. Additionally the backscattered primary radiation is measured in order to correct the variations of the solids content in the slurry. Since the particle size distribution of slurry can be described by the Rosin-Rammler formula, some calculations have been carried out in order to evaluate the influence of distribution parameters upon the results of the measurements of weight percentage U75 of particles smaller than 75 µm. The influence of solids content and of the copper concentration variation on the results has been also evaluated.1 It resulted from the calculations that the ratio rl/rz, where rl and r2 are the relative intensities of copper characteristic x-rays excited with 16.5 keV and 60 keV photons respectively does not depend on the copper content within the range 1 % to 4% of copper and is slightly dependent on the solids weight fraction and its chemical composition. The change of the dispersion parameter of the Rosin- Rammler distribution from 0.5 to 0.9 results in a change of value of U75 of approximately 3.0%. The results of calculations have been confirmed by the results of laboratory experiments. Therefore, a prototype of industrial analyzer for continuous determination of weight percentage of particles smaller than 75 µm has been designed and made. Its schematic drawing is shown in [Fig. 1]. Slurry is flowing down through steel flow-cell of the length equal to approx. 2 m. In the center, two XRF measuring heads (1) and (2) are located. Each of the heads comprises a rigid waterproof cover (3) with the mylar window (4), in which a proportional counter of resolution 15% for 6.4 keV is mounted with a preamplifier (5). EARLIER studies of the dependence of creep on structure1 and of the dependence of creep rupture on creep behavior2 did not include detailed discussion of the phases present in the specimens under examination. It is of interest to determine the nature and amounts of such phases present since it is well known that these are dependent on composition, heat treatment and creep conditions.3 This investigation has therefore been undertaken to identify these constituents and to determine their relative amounts. This report presents the results of this investigation and describes an improved "extraction replica" technique developed in the course of the work. The composition of the Type 316 austenitic stainless steels studied in this investigation is given in Table I. The specimens were solution treated at 2000°F for 1/2 hr and water quenched. Those specimens subjected to prestrain at room temperature Methods for extracting precipitate particles from materials for electron and X-ray diffraction analysis have been described by Fisher,4 Smith and Nutting: and Booker and coworkers.6'7 Electrolytic extraction methods have been described by Andrews and Hughes.8 The first two methods have been used at this Laboratory, but have not proved satisfactory for many problems requiring X-ray diffraction analysis. It has been difficult to remove the replicas or to avoid tearing them during removal. These difficulties are overcome by backing the replica with a water-soluble plastic such as Dupont 51-05 Elvanol (polyvinyl alcohol). The backing increases the thickness of the replica so that it can be mechanically stripped from unloosened particles without folding or tearing. This procedure eliminates the stripping of wet replicas, which usually have a low tear strength. By stripping replicas after drying, it is possible to extract partially loosened particles which otherwise would remain imbedded in the metal. The modified method is as follows: after the specimen is polished, it is etched for 60 min in modified glyceregia consisting of 30 ml glycerol, 7 ml nitric acid, and 4 ml of hydrochloric acid. The sample is then washed, air dried, and coated with a 20 pct Baker and Adamson 1611 collodion (85 pct amyl acetate by volume) film. After the collodion film is dry (about 15 min), the sample is again etched in the modified glyceregia for 50 min, washed with isopropyl alcohol (to prevent dissolving the collodion) and air dried. A very thick coat of polyvinyl alcohol (about 50 pct solution "Elvanol Dupont 51-05" in water) is poured over the sample and is permitted to dry for about 24 hr. The composite film containing the precipitates is then stripped from the specimen and floated, polyvinyl alcohol side down, in water (at about 50°C) until the polyvinyl alcohol dissolves. This usually takes about 15 min. Should any of the polyvinyl alcohol remain on the replica, it does not give a crystalline diffraction pattern and therefore does not hinder identification of the precipitates. The extraction replica, floating in water, is picked up on a glass fiber and mounted in the Debye-Scherrer camera for X-ray diffraction analysis. Concentration of the etchant, and also etching time, had to be increased for several of the samples. Fig. 1 shows two extraction replicas taken from different areas of spec. M74-37; X-ray analysis showed a strong diffraction pattern of M23C6 and a medium one of u phase. A

Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. Oriel Resources has with the support of SRK (Cardiff) and DRA and Mintek (South Africa) carried our a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to recover high grade chrome ore from its Voskhod deposit very close to Chromtau that is near to Aktobe in Kazakhstan. Voskhod is a large podiform ore body that contains nearly 20million tons of chromite grading about 48% Cr2O3 and with a Cr/Fe ratio of over 3/1. Selected bore hole core samples were obtained from the confirmation drilling programme during the DFS phase of the project in 2005 for pilot plant test work to design the mineral beneficiation plant. The chrome ore is characterised by four main types, namely high grade lumpy and chip sized ore, high-grade fine ore, lower grade (subordinate) lumpy ore and lower grade fine ore. Gravity separation tests carried out by Mintek showed that the large density difference between the high grade (at over 3.7t/m3) and lower grade ore (at less than 2.97t/m3 ) should ensure very good separation in the DMS drum and DMS cyclone stages resulting in high recoveries of Cr2O3 - rich chromite ore products. Very high chrome ore grades of up to 64% Cr2O3 and Cr/Fe ratios of 4 to 1 were obtained at an 80% mass yield from selected samples of lumpy and chip ore size fractions. The overall predicted recovery from the design work on the mine and plant is expected to be closer to about 70% of the ROM (Run of Mine) feed. DRA has completed the design of the mineral processing plant to recover about 900 kt/a of chrome ore from the 1.3 Mt/a of ROM feed. The plant has been sized to handle up to 1.5 Mt/a and will also be able to address the variability in ore feed as different regions in the deposit are mined. The lumpy high-grade product and the chips size fraction is expected to grade around 48% Cr2O3 and the fine concentrate between 56 and 58%Cr2O3 The ratio of products is expected to be about 70, 15 and 15 percent respectively but will vary to some extent during the expected 20 year life of the mining operation based on including the associated adjacent Karaagash deposit together with the Voskhod deposit. The prediction of the product split from the processing plant depends on many factors such as the geology, mineralogy, mining, handling and metallurgical processing. An overall process flow model has been developed that covers the ROM ore, the various types of chrome ore feed to the mineral beneficiation plant, the projected products and the subsequent smelting of the chromite ores to produce High Carbon Ferrochromium. The model allows the optimisation of the quality of the chrome ore in terms of Cr2O3 content, Cr/Fe ratio and recovery to be studied. This information can also be evaluated in terms of the economic requirements for smelting High Carbon Ferrochromium (HCFeCr) at a given location. Oriel is planning to supply chrome ore to Ferrochrome plants mostly in China and Russia. The use of the model will assist to maximise the value of the Voskhod project to its owners and also assist the users of the chrome ore in selecting the appropriate supply quality to meet their needs for a given smelter operation. The smelting of high grade Voskhod ore requires a limited addition of about 5 to 7% quartz to flux the MgO and Al2O3 and about 25% coke as a reducing agent to produce an alloy containing from about 65 to 74%chromium depending on the Cr/Fe ratio.

Results fit the expression: D= 1.58 x lgs exp-------==-----) cm2,sec THE diffusion coefficient for hydrogen in the metastable ß-phase titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, 11 pct Cr, and 3 pct A1 was measured as part of an investigation of the effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium alloys. Several theories on the mechanisms of hydrogen embrittle-ment include diffusion of hydrogen at ambient temperature as an important step in the embrittling process.'-5 In hydrogen-contaminated a-ß titanium alloys, it has been postulated that the rate-controlling step may be the rate at which hydrogen diffuses from the ß phase to stress- or strain-nucleated brittle hydride platelets at the a-ß interface.' However, embrittlement of the all-ß alloy investigated in this work may proceed by a different mechanism, since this alloy can be embrittled without the formation of detectable hydride platelets.6 Troiano has suggested that in this case the mechanism of delayed failure or embrittlement is similar to that proposed for high-strength steel, i.e., repeated crack initiation caused by a decrease in bonding energy as hydrogen diffuses to points of high tri-axial stress at the root of a notch. In both types of alloy the rate of embrittlement is believed to be controlled by diffusion of hydrogen in the ß phase. Accurate hydrogen-diffusion data in the vicinity of room temperature should therefore be of some assistance in understanding the mechanisms of embrittlement in these two classes of titanium alloys. Diffusion of hydrogen in pure titanium has been studied by Wasilewski and Kehl7 at temperatures above 500°C. Their measurements on diffusion in the ß phase were extended below the ß-a transformation temperature (882°C) to approximately 600°C. This was possible because of the 8 stabilizing effect of hydrogen. No results at lower temperatures have been published and there are no data in the literature on hydrogen diffusion in the ß -phase alloy used in this program. Hydrogen diffusion in metals is generally investigated by measuring the rate of transport of hydrogen past a solid-gas interface, i.e., by absorption, permeation, or degassing-rate measurements. These methods produce accurate diffusion data when bulk diffusion is the rate-determining step in the over-all process. However, at the lower temperatures of interest in hydrogen-embrittlement studies or under conditions where surface films are present, the measured rates may be surface-controlled and the calculated diffusion coefficients will be in error. Surface effects were eliminated in the present work by using a modification of the common welded-couple technique m which two bars with uniform but different compositions are joined before the diffusion anneal." The same type of step change in the initial concentration vs distance curve was produced by electrolytically hydrogenating thin-strip specimens which had been electrically insulated over half of their length. Concentration vs distance curves were determined, after appropriate diffusion-annealing treatments, by vacuum-extraction analyses of transverse samples sheared from the strips. Diffusion coefficients were calculated by the methods of Grube.M This technique was feasible because of the large concentrations of hydrogen which can be charged into p -phase alloys without the formation of hydrides15'16 and because of the extremely low degassing rates observed when hydrogenated titanium alloys are heated in air. Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

Smoky Valley Mining Company, Round Mountain, Nevada, was the pioneer operation designed for large scale heap leaching of crushed gold ores. It is located in the Big Smoky Valley which stretches 160 km (100 miles) through central Nevada west of the Toiyabe Mountain Range. Gold was first-discovered at Round Mountain, 88 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, in 1905; and mining in the area included placer operations, which ran from 1946 to about 1960. Smoky Valley Mining Company is a partnership of Felmont Oil Co., Case-Pomeroy & Co., and Copper Range Co., with the latter being wholly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Co. In 1969, an option on the Round Mountain property was acquired by Copper Range, and during 1974 a decision was reached to proceed with mine development and plant construction. Ore reserves were reported at 10,537,000 mt (1 1,617,000 st) of 2.09 g per mt (0. 061 oz per ton) gold using a cut- off grade of 0.69 g (0.02 oz). Silver content was approximately 2.4 g per mt (0.07 oz per ton) and the waste to ore ratio was about 1: 1. By the end of 1976 heap leaching was in operation. The ore is a rhyolite tuff, sometimes described as a gold porphyry with highly abrasive qualities but which does not break down into slimes upon contact .with cyanide solutions. Gold is unevenly distributed through the ore but as a whole it is in a very finely divided state. Climatic conditions are extreme in central Nevada. Summers are hot and dry while winters are windy and cold with subfreezing temperatures. Elevation of the property is about 1,920 m (6,300 ft). Precipitation averages 203 mm (8 in.) per year. Until February of 1980, leaching was continued until the temperature reached minus 2ºC (28º F), and about 10 months leaching was the average. Water for the operation is drawn from the Toiyabe Mountains through a 13. 7 km (8. 5 mile) pipeline, originally installed in 1915, or from wells in the valley bottom. The plant requires make-up water at the rate of about 1,500 liters per min (400 gpm). On a schedule of three shifts, seven days per week, the daily output at Round Mountain amounts ,to 12, 700 mt (14, 000 st) consisting of 6,350 mt (7,000 st) each of ore and waste. Ore is hauled with a fleet of 45 mt (50 st) trucks and dumped into the 1,0.70 by 1,650 mm (42 by 65 in. ) gyratory primary crusher located near the pit. The primary

The performance of a gas reservoir su,bject to water drive is often affected by interference due to gas procluction or injection in neighboring reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer. Field data available on production-pressure behavior of several reservoirs indicate that prediction of reservoir performence must include the effects due to mutual interference. A method developed to predict the performance of two or more interfering gas reservoirs, subject to specified production-iniection .rchedule.s, is presented. The method involves the comhinatiorz of the theory of unsteady-state water movernent with appropriate meterial balance consideration.s. The procedure which extends M. Mortada's treatment for interfering oil reservoirs makes use of his dimen-.sionless pressure drop quantities. prevented graphically in the literature. In order to evaluale the predictive accuracy and practical field applicability of the theory, the method has been applied to analyze the performance of two actual gas reservoirs in mutual interference. The calculations were performed on an IBA4 704 computer. The predicted performances were alro calcltlated with the interference effects ignored. The results show that considerably better agreement between calculated and observed behavior ic. obtained when the interference effects are included. INTRODUCTION Fluid communication between any number of oil or gas reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer results in mutual interference effects on their production-pressure behavior. The theory, application and interpretation of pressure build-up behavior of oil wells, drawdown tests on oil or gas-producing formations and behavior of several storage reservoirs indicate ample experimental evidence of mutual interference. A method developed to compute the behavior of interfering oil reservoirs was published several years ago by Mortada.4 Studies conducted during the recent years on underground storage of natural gas clearly indicated the need for extending Mortada's work to the case of interfering gas reservoirs. The adoption of appropriate material balance equations in conjunction with the unsteady-state pressure interference theory yields pressure-explicit equations. Their solution, their application to a specific case history and an over-all evaluation of the developed method through the comparison of predicted and observed field performances were the main objectives of this study. The object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. R. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mincs of the Illinois Zinc Co. Anticline and the Rock Formations Owing to the structural deformation between La Salle and Utica, the older rocks of the state are exposed to the surface along the northern embankment and the bottoms of the Illinois River valley near the latter place. At; the Illinois Zinc Co. works, Sec. 16, Tp. 33, R 1, a well for water mas sunk 1828 ft. and samples taken every 10 ft. of the ground penetrated; duplicates were sent to Mr. Cady of the Illinois Geological Survey. A general compilation or synopsis study of this section is here presented. As the well is over 1 mi. west of the Western limb of the anticline, the section affords some reliable data. These samples were studied and interpreted by H. M. DuBois as Lower Magnesian, and by G. H. Cady as the Lower Magnesian. The results are given in Fig. 3. The most interesting geological feature of this district is the La Salle anticline. In 1865, Leo les Quereux, looking at Split Rock, asked how it happened that the upper coal measures overlie strata of the Lower Silurian and what has become of the formations which are generally found intermediate—the Upper Silurian, the Devonian and sub-carboniferous, and the lower member of the coal measures?
