The present-day metallurgical community is quite familiar with the use of jarosites [MFe3(S04)2(0H)6 where M = K, Na, NH4, Ag, 1/2Pb, etc.] as a means of controlling iron, alkalis and sulphate in hydrometallurgical circuits. This modern precipitation technology has found an increasingly widespread application in the zinc industry111 and is gradually also being extended into the hydrometallurgical processing of copper and cobalt121 . The chief advantage of jarosite precipitation is that the iron precipitate settles and filters well, and gives low losses of divalent metals in the washed residue. Although this jarosite precipitation technology was developed only within the past twenty years, man's involvement with jarosites extends back to antiquity, and jarosites have played an important role as a source of silver in several ancient metallurgical centres. In the early days of this century, argentojarosite was an important local source of silver at the Tintic Standard mine, Dividend, Utah, where over 200 000 oz of silver were recovered from highgrade natural jarosite over a three-month period 131 . At the Matagente mine in Peru, pockets of argentiferous plumbojarosite up to 40 m thick were mined and processed by the Indians prior to the arrival of the Spaniards14-51 . In Cyprus there are vast jarosite deposits associated with the ancient mining sitesl51 , but exploitation of these jarosites has been insignificant because of their low silver values. The most extensive mining of silver-bearing jarosite, and certainly the oldest documented instance of such jarosite exploitation, was in the vast pre-Roman workings at Rio Tinto, Spain. This mine, the greatest single miningmetallurgical site currently known from the ancient world and also the oldest site of more or less continuous metal production, has witnessed many metallurgical firsts. Aside from the initial processing of jarositic ores for their silver values, the development of large-scale hydrometallurgy also seems to have occurred at Rio Tinto. As early as 1737, copper was recovered by cementation on scrap iron from the mine waters at Rio Tintol51 . Large-scale heap leaching of calcined ore commenced with the British operations in 1876 and, by 1900, raw pyrite was heap leached to recover associated copper values161 .

"Construction equipment and operations usually produce soil and structural vibrations which may harmfully affect various structures and also the content of buildings and houses. The level of structural vibrations depends on a number of factors such as characterized sources of vibrations, soil conditions, and susceptibility of structures. There are certain knowledge and experience for managing the effects of construction vibrations which require implementation of condition survey of structures, information on construction dynamic sources and soil conditions at a site, evaluation of possible vibration effects on structure, calculation of ground vibrations before construction, use mitigation measures to decrease vibrations, and a choice of appropriate vibration limits. The paper presents the application of known concepts for assessment of vibration effects on structures from bridge constructions.INTRODUCTIONVibrations producing by construction activities such as pile driving, dynamic compaction of loose soils, demolition work, heavy construction equipment and trucks can affect adjacent and remote structures. Vibration effects on structures, sensitive devices and processes may create significant practical problems. Legal actions are often required for solutions of vibration consequences. The level of construction vibrations depends on dynamic sources, soil conditions at a site in particularly availability of soils with settlement potential, distances from the sources, parameters of waves propagating at a site and susceptibility rating of adjacent and remote structures. It is likely that intolerable structural vibrations from direct vibration effects of impact pile driving and resonant floor vibrations from vibratory pile driving may be induced in adjacent structures to construction sites.Foundation settlements resulting from soil vibrations in loose soils usually occur in the proximity of dynamic sources, but it is important that dynamic settlement may happen at various distances from the source. There are such examples. First, Kaminetzky (1991) mentioned a case history of building settlements developed at a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft) away from a pile driving site. Foundations of the buildings were underpinned on piles down to the tip elevation of the new driven piles to prevent building settlements. Second, Lacy and Gould (1985) shows that the peak particle velocity (PPV) of 2.5 mm/s (0.1 in/s) of ground vibrations could trigger dynamic settlements at distances up to 30.5 m (100 ft) from driven piles."

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

"INTRODUCTION Electrification of the heavily trafficked Manchester to Preston route by Network Rail required the rehabilitation of the Victorian era Farnworth Tunnels to accommodate 21st century high speed trains. Network Rail, J. Murphy and Sons Ltd (JMS) and OTB Engineering Ltd (OTB) collaborated closely to complete these works in close proximity to heritage infrastructure whilst maintaining a rail service on the route. This significant challenge has been mastered by a combination of detailed investigation, complex modelling, robust design, extensive monitoring, ground treatment, secant piling, sprayed concrete, steel arches and segmental lining techniques. Investigation of the “Down” Tunnel found deformation and cracking of the lining and this was reconstructed during 11 weekend possessions. The “Up” Tunnel was filled with low strength concrete and a 9m diameter open face shield was used to construct an 8m diameter segmental lined tunnel during a 23 week blockade whilst traffic was maintained in the “Down” Tunnel. ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY The Farnworth Tunnel project is part of the UK wide £1bn Railway Upgrade Plan to provide improvements throughout the rail network which includes the Manchester to Preston route. The project also supports the UK Government commitment to build a “Northern Powerhouse” by improving links that bind northern England together and which will help it release its full potential with a more balanced, healthier economy. The majority of the current UK rail network infrastructure resulted from the rapid growth of the railways in the mid to late 19th century which means that most of the existing tunnels are over 120 years old. Over the centuries the introduction of larger rolling stock has reduced the original clearances provided in tunnels. The electrification of a route requires that any over-line structures provide clearance for Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), new rolling stock and to meet modern standards. As part of Network Rail’s current electrification programme a further 36 tunnels have been identified on routes requiring electrification. Not of all these Victorian structures will require alterations to provide OLE clearance but the condition of the existing tunnels and modern fire / waterproofing requirements may ultimately dictate the need for rehabilitation."

"The Broadmeadow punch longwall coal mine in Central Queensland Australia has experienced significant highwall movement associated with the effect of longwall subsidence when the longwalls approach their final position close to the open-cut highwall. In response to this movement, Broadmeadow employed two types of broadscale highwall monitoring (radar and laser scanners) to provide full coverage measurement throughout three consecutive longwalls approaching the highwall. This was to attain a better understanding of the mechanism causing the movement and potentially enable prediction of instability. Results from the monitoring found the highwall is displaced to magnitudes unlike those typically measured in open-cut mining and in direct contrast with typical longwall subsidence behaviour.This paper discusses the ground movements measured, monitoring methods used, safety measures established, as well as theorising the failure mechanism. Recommendations are made for mine and pit designs for future punch longwall layouts. The paper shows how the movements measured are more aligned to some measurements made during stream valley closure studies previously presented at the ICGCM and challenge the mechanisms suggested by previous literature.BACKGROUNDThe mining of longwalls under or adjacent to large voids (e.g., stream valleys, escarpments, or cliffs) is commonly associated with heavily vegetated or steep surface areas. In areas of extreme topographic variance, access to traditional survey pegs and stations or even new radar or laser technologies is limited. In addition, seldom have the longwall layouts aligned themselves parallel or perpendicular to the surface feature, making interpretation of any available surface movement data more complicated.The punch longwall layout (Figure 1) is also quite uncommon (only undertaken at a small number of longwall mines in Australia) but creates the perfect configuration to enable a somewhat controlled study of the effect of longwall subsidence on a steeply dipping surface feature (an un-vegetated, evenly excavated open-cut highwall). The relatively recently developed radar and laser scanning technology has also enabled near continuous, real-time, sub-millimetre monitoring of a full 500m wide x 100m high highwall. Because the punch longwall enables access and a clear view, the technology could be easily deployed as compared to the highly vegetated and variable topography of stream valleys."

"Metro Line 5 in Sao Paulo is being constructed. This lot extends for 4,940 m with twin EPB shield tunnels under a dense and busy urban area, with an excavation diameter of 6.9 m. The tunnels run predominantly in the tertiary soils of Sao Paulo where extensive experience exists from previous EPB shield tunnel projects. However, new experience is being gained in Sao Paulo in shield tunnelling through Saprolite, the weathered product of the underlying Gneiss crystalline basement, through the resulting residual soils and in rock-soil mixed face conditions. Furthermore, experiences in difficult mixed face soil conditions with overconsolidated clay at the face in combination with loose sands at the crown under the groundwater table will be presented. Additionally, the design, operational and controlling approach followed for the shield drive at particular critical cross-sections where the shields were driven close or under buildings. INTRODUCTION Within the framework of Sao Paulo´s metro network expansion, the excavation of the shield tunnels for Metro Sao Paulo Line 5 is currently taking place. The present paper deals with the description of the most relevant features from the construction of the Line 5 – Lot 3 tunnels. The paper presents how particular challenges were dealt maximising potential of EPB shield tunnelling technology. Challenges were posed not only by the difficult boundary conditions of urban shield tunnelling, such as shield drive under buildings, but also by complex geotechnical situations. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The great urban area of São Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world, with around 20 Million people living in the city and in the suburb area. The city faces great mobility problems and in the last years the government has been investing great amounts on the megacity´s metro expansion. The Line 5 Extension plays an important role to connect the south area to the central area of the city, with a whole extension of 11 kilometres, including 11 new stations. It is estimated that this line will transport almost 900.000 passengers/day. The first stretch of the expansion, Lot 3, consists of two single tunnels, almost 5 kilometres long each, crossing 4 stations. Figure 1 shows details of the Line 5 Expansion."

The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit occurs within the complexly deformed and metamorphosed sediments of the Middle Proterozoic Cloncurry Terrane, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. The sedimentary sequence comprises a thick package of variably carbonatic argillitic and siliciclastic sediments of the Corella Formation, Lady Clayre Dolomite and Knapdale Quartzite. A slate and calc-argillite unit locally referred to as the Dugald River Slates is the host to the economically significant deposit. The deformational history of the Dugald River area involved three phases of ductile deformation. The present geometry of the Dugald River Main Lode is recognised as a strike extensive steep westerly dipping tabular sheet, within which a steep north westerly plunging zone of pronounced thickening is evident. This zone is interpreted to have formed during folding via remobilisation of the sulphides into a shoot-like body, the geometry of which was controlled by stretching associated with the folding. Further modification of the shoot and sulphide re-distribution has resulted from late phase transgressive shears. The sulphide mineralisation is characterised by three distinctive sulphide types, laminated, banded and breccia, the distribution of which define two broad zones. The northern zone is a narrow I - 5 m thick stratabound unit comprising finely laminated and banded sulphide mineralisation within a well bedded fine grained argillite sequence. This is part of the Lady Clayre Dolomite sequence and is a predeformational precursor form of mineralisation. The southern zone comprises the thickest development of mineralisation (up to 30 m) characterised by slate-sulphide breccias and veins derived from complex polyphase remobilisation of the sulphide mineralisation. It is this zone which forms a stratabound locally transgressive body within the high strain Dugald River Slates and which contains the main body of economic mineralisation. Sulphide mineralogy comprises sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena and traces of chalcopyrite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. The present resource for the Dugald River deposit stands at 38 Mt grading 13.0 per cent Zn, 2.1 per cent Pb and 42 g/t AS. The Dugald River Zn-Pb-Ag deposit is regarded as an example of a syndiagenetic stratabound sulphide accumulation which, as the result of polyphase deformation and upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies metamorphism, has undergone extensive remobilisation and Rccrystallisation.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. Introduction The copper smelter of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited was constructed to handle the concentrates produced by the concentrator, the residues from the zinc plant, concentrates from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Limited, and other custom material that might be available. Construction work was started in 1929 and the first concentrates were smelted in November, 1930. From that time until June, 1931, the operations were more or less of an experimental or tuning-up nature. In designing the smelter, it was believed the following tonnages would be available for smelting per day: Copper Tons Content H. B. M. & S. Co. concentrates 331 14.0 per cent H. B. M. & S. Co. zinc plant residues 77 2.5 per cent Sherritt-Gordon concentrates 200 20.0+ per cent Consideration was given to wet-smelting the charge, but, in order to give greater flexibility to the operation, it was finally decided to roast the concentrates before smelting. Briefly, the smelter equipment consists of three Nichols-Herreshoff roasters, one reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters, a Walker casting wheel, and a four-unit Cottrell plant, two units' for the roaster gases and two for the converter gases. A general plan of the smelter is shown in Figure 1. Prior to the commencement of smelter operations, a stockpile of about 9,000 tons of concentrates had been built up by the concentrator and the old pilot-mill. The zinc plant was in operation, but the equipment for drying the residues at the smelter had not been completed. Sherritt-Gordon did not commence their shipments of concentrates until April, 1931. The only flux available was barren sand from a pit ten miles south of Flin Flon, adjacent to the railway. Several small deposits of metal-bearing siliceous ore had been discovered in the district, but none of these were sufficiently large to be considered as a source of smelter flux. At the beginning of March, 1931, the entire stockpile of concentrates had been consumed, and available tonnage for smelting was limited to the daily production of the concentrator.

On any given mine site the water system is contingent upon its initial design. Through time the initial design is adjusted by a myriad of water management options in order to improve water system performance or to adapt to a new production capacity or method at the mine site. These options generally do not comprehensively consider energy requirements, so it is unlikely that any given mine water system will be optimised in terms of both water and energy uses. Thus this may simply shift constraints of efficiency of one resource dimension, water, to another, energy. As a result, changes in water systems would cause more energy-related issues to mining companies. For example, the companies would have an increase in operational cost and/or pay more for carbon tax with changes in their water system. Therefore, in order to avoid undesirable and potential unforseen energy and infrastructure issues in a mine life cycle, it is essential to select suitable water management options for a mine considering both water and energy resources simultaneously.Considering water and energy criteria in evaluating water management options consists of net water volume availability, net operational energy demand and net water replacement energy demand. Ideal water management options should be high in water volume availability but low in both operational energy demand and water replacement energy demand. A water option would also be favourable if it has low potential of causing adverse environmental impacts such as lowering groundwater tables due to groundwater withdrawal, or elevating saline constituents in surface waters when reusing brine for dust suppression. However, these environmental impacts are not considered in this analysis.This article presents a graphical method to assess mine water management options, based on these three criteria. The proposed method to assist in screening mine water management options includes two main steps:1. categorise water management options into prioritised groups2. rank the options within each prioritised group.The method is applied to a gold mine and presented in this article as a worked example. THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. His Observations on the Magda/en Islands is included in the New York State Museum Bulletin 149, seventh report of the Director, 1910.

A coal mine located in southern West Virginia recently set a world record for daily low-seam coal production using a Cat automated longwall plow system. In a 24-hour period on April 10 and 11, 2014, the Pinnacle Mine longwall produced 32,411 t (35,724 st) from the Virginia Pocahontas No. 3 Seam, in a seam height of just 1.42 m (56 in.) along the 298-m (980-ft) longwall face. The Pinnacle Mine, located near the town of Pineville and owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., an international mining and resource company, operates a Cat Gleithobel GH1600 Longwall Plow System. A previous record was set by this system at Pinnacle in August, 2012 when 29,423 t (32,430 st) were mined in a 24-hour period. The record was set by the same system, mining its second panel after a comprehensive rebuild was performed by Carter Machinery, the Cat Dealer in that area. The rebuild encompassed a complete rebuild of the headgate and tailgate armored face conveyor (AFC) drive, the headgate and tailgate special AFC pans, the stageloader drives and return end, the complete crusher and all gearboxes for the plow, AFC and stageloader. Carter acquired the rights to sales and aftermarket support associated with the former Bucyrus mining products, both surface and underground, in 2013. ?Supporting and rebuilding a longwall plow system was a new experience for the Carter service team,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Sales and Support Division. ?However, given the record production results attained by the rebuilt system at Pinnacle, it?s obvious that they are up to the challenge of supporting the underground product lines at the same high standards and quality level that they have been delivering for many years on the traditional Cat surface mining products.? Tom Bluth, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Products Division, said, ?Caterpillar congratulates the Pinnacle team for this great achievement. Without their efforts and dedication this record would not have been possible. To safely deliver that kind of output from such a thin seam is remarkable. We have been privileged to work alongside their team to demonstrate the capabilities of Cat longwall mining technology. ?

"The River Green Residential development, is located in the municipality of Richmond, BC adjacent to the Fraser River. Ground conditions at the site consisted of medium to fine grained alluvial sands and a high groundwater elevation. A temporary low permeability retaining wall was required in order to facilitate the construction of an underground parking structure without inducing settlement of adjacent structures, which include the Richmond Olympic Oval; part of the legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Golder Associates Ltd. and GeoPacific Consultants Ltd. utilized Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technology to enable construction of a continuous combined low permeability cut-off and retaining wall around the perimeter of the property. The 350m long wall was keyed into marine clay at a depth of 28m below ground surface, and contained H-Pile reinforcement installed at regular intervals. The CSM technology provided many benefits for this project, allowing the combined cut-off and retaining wall to be constructed within a very narrow footprint (650mm width). The low noise impact and near vibration free construction of the CSM equipment provided minimal inconvenience to nearby stakeholders during construction. To reduce dewatering volumes during excavation and prevent significant water-table drawdown the Hydraulic Conductivity requirements for the wall were 1 x 10-7 cm/s or less. Project specifications called for a different strength requirement for upper and lower portions of the wall. The top 13 meters of the wall required an Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of 4MPa to act as a retaining and cut-off wall, whereas the bottom 15 meters of the wall required a UCS of only 0.5 MPa to act only as a cut-off wall. Wet-grab and core samples were obtained from the panels to confirm the UCS and Hydraulic Conductivity specifications were met.INTRODUCTIONGolder Construction Inc. and GeoPacific Consultants Ltd. conducted the design and construction of a deep soil mixed cut-off and retaining wall system. THE Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barcenite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. INTRODUCTION The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarello,2 Mactear3 and Merrill4 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Barcena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. LOCATION The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). Johnson, Jr., The innovation of a special meeting under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee was well justified, if we accept as a criterion the number of papers presented at the meeting held on Oct. 16 and 17 in New York and the attendance at that meeting. Twenty-four papers were read, and most of these were widely discussed orally, while doubtless the written discussions will be even larger in extent. Discussions will be received up to Dec. 1, 1913. The attendance at the meeting of 106 members and 75 guests is an evidence of the wide anti growing interest in the Institute of men interested chiefly in iron and steel. It is especially interesting to note this large attendance at a meeting where very little of a social nature was introduced into the program. An informal dinner for the men at the Engineers' Club closed the meeting. At this dinner were present about 70 members and guests. One of the Vice-Chairmen and the Secretary of the new Committee on Petroleum and Gas told of the important plans in prospect of that Committee. Brief impromptu speeches by a considerable number of the members and guests were enjoyed. Professor Marburg reiterated his previous assertion that he believed that the Institute and the American Society for Testing Materials, as well as some of the other technical societies, were all fighting for one good cause; that there was room in the field for all of these societies with their various points of view; and that they should march shoulder to shoulder. The success of this dinner was due largely to the efforts of Mr. Johnson who had the affair in charge.

Much has been written concerning the hoisting equipment of various mines throughout the country, but most of the literature on the subject, if not all, describes equipment of extraordinary capacity and the small and medium-sized outfits have been neglected. The hoisting equipment here described is capable of handling about 1200 tons per day. It has not been worked to capacity, but 600 to 700 tons, together with men and materials, have been handled in two shifts without any great effort. Only one shaft extends from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine; see Fig. I. It is composed of three compartments, two of which are used for hoisting, and the third for water, air, and electrical lines, and for sinking purposes. In 1909, this shaft was raised from the 1000-ft. (304-m.) level to the 700-ft. There a station was cut and an air hoist installed. At this time all mining operations were confined to the upper levels of the mine; that is, above the 700-ft. The ore was dropped to this level through chutes from the 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-ft. levels and then lowered in cars on cages to the 1000-ft., which is the main haulage adit, the mill and railroad bins being about 3000 ft. from the shaft. Orebodies were, in due time, developed on the 1000-ft. level and below. Therefore, in 1913,the shaft was sunk to the 1150-ft. level and thereafter sinking was continued at regular intervals until the 1500-ft. level was reached. But, hoisting from the 1300-ft. level was a difficult and slow process with the antiquated air hoist, so, in 1916, it was decided to raise the shaft to the surface and install a modern, electrically operated hoist. This was completed early in 1917 and the hoist was in operation in March of that year. The Hoist Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show various features of the hoist and electrical equipment. A Nordberg engine of the double-drum, geared type, designed for a 10-ton load, including rope, at a speed of 1500 ft. per min., is used. The drums are 7 ft. (2.1 m.) in diameter, with a 54-in. (137-em.)

The following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 61 of the 102 counties of the State, There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft. (306 m.). The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. "Cupola melting is a complex physical and chemical process having a number of nonlinearities which make conventional process control difficult. In addition, sensors for both inputs and outputs of interest to the foundry operator are often difficult or impractical to apply in a production situation. The present work is an effort to control the process using both intelligent and conventional control techniques as appropriate. Neural networks are used as an inverse process model in a cascade, feedforward controller in conjunction with a finite difference model of the cupola. A separate implementation of the neural net serves as a stand-alone visualization tool; it can operate on a laptop computer and is a useful tool for the cupola operator. IntroductionThe goal of the present work is to develop a controller to improve the efficiency of cupola melting. Although cupola melting as a process has a long history, automatic control has been elusive because the process has been poorly understood. The purpose of this four-year program, which has been underway for about six months, is to develop a controller for the cupola process using intelligent and conventional control methods.The Cupola ProcessThe cupola furnace [1,2] is one of the oldest processes for making cast iron, and is still the dominant method. It takes the form of a water-cooled vertical cylinder, as large as 4 m in diameter and 20 m tall. The charge consists of scrap metal, alloying ingredients, limestone, and coke, which serves as fuel; it is composed by weight and fed through doors near the top of the cupola. Air, usually heated and often enriched with oxygen, is blown in near the bottom through tuyeres extending a short distance into the interior of the cupola. As the coke is consumed, the charge drops and melts. A continuous flow of iron emerges from the bottom of the furnace, at rates as high as 100 tons per hour, and. is transferred to casting lines in the foundry. The exhaust gases are drawn from the top of the cupola, where they are processed to meet pollution standards."

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. This member of the Morrison Formation contains many large deposits of uranium. This is (some pages in this article are damaged)
