The surface oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous solutions is an important sub-process in sulfide flotation and hydrometallurgy, but a full understanding of the oxidation process and products is still lacking. Many oxidation pathways and products involving elemental sulfur, metal polysulfide, metal-deficient sulfide and sulfate have been proposed, confirmed and argued. In this paper we provide further insight into the surface electrochemical behaviour of galena in aqueous solutions. For this research we have developed a novel experimental system, that combines chronoamperometry and AC-mode AFM surface imaging, which allows for in-situ, synchronized electrochemical control and examination of oxidative surface morphology. At pH4, the morphology of elemental sulfur (detected by ex-situ Cryo-XPS) formed on the oxidizing galena surface depends on the electrochemical potential pathway. In multi-step chronoamperometry (i.e. four potential steps from 0 mV to + 350 mV) the sulfur forms as nanoscopic domains, whereas in single-step chronoamperometry (i.e. one potential step from 0 mV to + 350 mV) sulfur forms as a heterogeneous layer. In each case the oxidation is controlled so that the number of electrons (coulombs) passed per unit area is the same, therefore the amount of sulfur produced is also the same. The differences in morphology with electrochemical potential pathway are explained using a nucleation and growth model. The formation of sulfur on the surface increased both advancing and receding contact angle of galena, but the morphological changes induced by different electrochemical potential pathways did not significantly alter the hydrophobicity of the surface. "Future open pit metallurgical coal mines in western Canada will be developed in complex geological environments. The success of these operations will be influenced by the mine operators' ability to prepare accurate mine plans and to predict and, subsequently, 10 control both out-of-seam dilution and coal recovery. Quintette Coal Limited has been mining its tightly folded and severely faulted Mesa depo sit at annual rates of up to 9 Mt of raw coal, since October 1982. Ongoing development drilling combined with continuous utilization of blast hole information, has been required to achieve an acceptable geological data base for short range mine planning. Thrust faulting has been a primary geological cause of difficulty in selectively mining waste and coal, which has resulted in higher than expected dilution in plant feed. The same geological phenomenon has also increased reserves by 6.3% and allowed for expanded mine plans to include a lower thrust plate, ultimately doubling the mines original reserve base. This paper illustrates the geology of the Mesa deposit and the type of work involved in its interpretation. Regional GeologyThe Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is located in the Peace River Coal Field of northeastern British Columbia. In this area, northwesterly-trending folds of the Rocky Mountain foothills are commonly cut by multiple, low-angle thrust faults, which dip to the southwest. The Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation, of near shore continental origin, contains 5 to 7 mineable seams of medium volatile bituminous metallurgical coal (Figs. I and 2). These seams normally range in thickness between 0.75 m and 9.5 m and have an aggregate thickness of between 15 m and 22 m."

The Waihi underground mining operation currently mines epithermal veins ranging from two metres up to ten metres in width using a ‘Modified Avoca’ stoping method. This method consists of longhole bench stope mining at 15m to 18m sublevel spacing. The bulk of production drilling and blasting is top down with the extraction length of a typical stope panel nominally being 18m to 20m along strike. A stope panel is usually taken in two blasting cycles followed by the remote bogging of the stope ore. The panel is backfilled in-cycle using unconsolidated waste rock material which is tipped into the void from the upper level using a Caterpillar R2900 or R1700 sized underground loader. The underground mine first commenced production in 2008 and up until 2016, as was typical of many open stope mining operations at the time, an underground loader was used to place a waste rock bund at the top brow of the open stope. This rock bund was the principal means of protecting people and equipment from this hazard. In 2016 there was a fatality at the mine when a loader that had been tasked with building this rock bund fell into the stope void. Immediately post incident all mining and processing operations were suspended for a week to allow colleagues to grieve, to observe cultural protocols and to begin the investigation into this event. During this period senior operators, supervisory and technical staff developed an innovative system which used steel bollards to protect this open edge. With development over the following months this bollard system has eliminated this hazard from the Waihi underground mine.

"The McDame chrysotile asbestos deposit located near Cassiar in northern British Columbia isfound at depth and on trend to the southeast of the currently mined open-pit Cassiar asbestos deposit. The ultramafic rock hosting the McDame is serpentinized peridotite of the Upper Paleozoic Sylvester Group contained in an ophiolitic sequence preserved within a lower thrust sheet of the Sylvester Allochthon. The Sylvester stratigraphic package is a series of thrust slices composed of argillite, tuff and volcanic flows, diorite and serpentinite. Contacts between units are often fault-controlled.The McDame asbestos-bearing ultramafite is considered to represent a separate interleaved fault-bounded slice of rock distinct from the Cassiar asbestos deposit.Asbestos mineralization of the McDame deposit was discovered in /978. Exploration during /980 and /98/ focused on extensive underground drilling of the deposit and in /983 on geological mapping, airborne and ground magnetic surveys. In /984 a 622.5 m borehole was drilled with a 242 m intersection of McDame ultramafite of which the lower 15/ metres contain potentially economic chrysotile asbestos. The McDame deposit averages 90 m thick, trends north-south, dips easterly and plunges southeasterly. The deposit is estimated to contain geological reserves in the order of 62 million tonnes containing asbestos fibre similar in value to the Cassiar deposit.The McDame is considered a major world-class asbestos deposit. A decision to develop and mine the deposit will require further substantial underground exploration and evaluation. A + 1200 m exploration adit driven to the hanging wall of the deposit was undertaken in 1985 in anticipation of bulk sampling and diamond drilling in 1986."

In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

"The New Pascalis property is situated in Louvicourt and Pascalis townships, about 200 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec. It is made up of 38 claims under option to SOQUEM since August I, 1981 during which time SOQUEM has earned a 60% interest. The property is underlain by archean basaltic volcanics that have been intruded along the west boundary by the Bourlamaque batholith, and by north -trending dykes.The 1982 disco very is related to the re-evaluation of a 1931-gold showing located in the southeastern part of the property, a combination of the presence of a weak IP anomaly at the eastern end of the showing and overburden stripping at that location, resulted in the discovery of a mineralized diorite dyke.The dyke, which strikes N 20 ° Wand dips vertically , has intruded E-W striking agglomerates. The dyke contains south dipping, gold-hearing quart z-tourmaline-pyrite veins that are distributed in a ladder-type arrangement. Visible gold may he observed in drill core, and is generally associated with pyrite porphyroblasts.Diamond drilling has outlined th e dyke for a strike length of 300 11/ and a width of about 10 m, Result s of this drilling indicate, to a depth of 155 m, reserves of 834 000 metric tonnes grading 8.25 g Au/t un cut or 5.38 g Au/t cut to on e ounce. However, four deeper holes have added depth extension to 400m. Also, west of the dyke and within 150 m, other promising gold values have been intersected within quartz-tourmaline veins associated with other parallel dykes."

The brown-coal opencast mines in Germany's Rhineland have to cope with several problems. Predominant are densely populated areas with highly productive farmland, many railroads, highways, and rivers, as well as towns and farm settlements which have to be removed before or during the lifetime of a mine. Also the ground- water table has to be lowered to keep the deep opencast mines dry and stable. These problems urged a development towards deep opencast mines with powerful machines; the large material movement and the high coal production are the basis for the economic success in working the Rhenish brown-coal deposits. Up to now, bucket wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 100,000 m3 (130,000 cu yd) are in operation. Machines of twice this capacity are under construction. Corresponding to the excavators development, the stackers' capacity has to be increased too. The new stackers will reach a daily capacity of 240,000 m3 (310,000 cu yd). The haulage in the mine is performed by conveyor belt systems, which are arranged in such a manner that the belt lines meet at a belt switching point. Here the incoming lines may be connected to the outgoing ones so as to direct the material flow to the desired receiving stations. At the moment there are conveyor belts in operation with a width of 2.2 m (7.2 ft); the new belts will have a layout for 37,000 t/h (40,770 stph), the width of which amounts to 3.0 m (9.8 ft). All belts and driving stations on benches are shiftable.

The thirty year old wharf structures at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey?s Port Elizabeth Marine Terminal are being modernized for the next generation of Post-Panamax container ships, which require deeper water and larger container cranes. The terminal operator is upgrading the wharf in order to remain competitive, now and into the future. The upgrade coincides with the Army Corps of Engineers? $733 million project to deepen the main shipping channel in New York Harbor. This paper focuses on the structural modifications to accommodate berth deepening and to support the heavier loads of the new cranes. An overview is provided of the design and actual construction, including typical problems encountered when combining new and existing structures. The wharf improvements included: ? Installation of a steel king pile/sheet pile cutoff wall along the face of the wharf to permit increasing the depth from ?12.2 m + 0.61 m to ?15.2 m + 0.61 m ( ?40 ft + 2 ft to ?50 ft + 2 ft) ? Removal of the existing crane rail support beams and installation of new piles and beams to support the increased crane loads ? Replacement of the existing timber fender system with a new system capable of resisting the berthing energy of a 152,000 MT displacement vessel, and having dedicated sections for berthing barges ? Replacing the existing overhead, landside crane electric feeder system with a waterside, cable reel trench system. The work included upgrading the transformer capacity at the terminal for increased crane power demands This paper provides a case history for port administrators, terminal operators, engineers, and shipping lines challenged with upgrading aging terminals.

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man's environment and man's adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

Cutting strong rock with a drag bit assisted by high-pressure water jets By M. HOOD. B.Sc. Hons. (Min. Eng.). B.Sc. (Mech. Eng.). A.M.I.M.M. (Visitor) Experiments are described that led to the discovery that coherent high-pressure water jets directed immediately ahead of drag bits while they are cutting strong rock reduce the magnitudes of the forces on the bits significantly. Tests were carried out to assess the effects of the pressure of the water jets on bit-cutting performance. The pressure was varied between 10 MPa and 50 MPa, the water flow rate being a constant 30 I/min. Over this pressure range, the force on the bit was reduced to the extent that the depth of cut of the bit was at least doubled with the point of impingement of the jets optimized. Forces on the bit were found to be particularly sensitive to the point of impingement of the water jets relative to the bit. The optimum configuration was found to be with two jets, one directed towards each corner of the bit and impinging on the rock approximately 2 mm ahead of the leading edge of the bit. Experiments in which a drag bit and high-pressure water jets were used to cut strong abrasive quartzite in the underground mining situation have demonstrated a potential increase of up to five times in the average depth of cut due to reduction of the forces on the bit. The results from the underground tests indicate that the life of the bit is improved significantly - by a factor of approximately two - when highpressure water jets are used.

TOP-SLICING was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent, of the Santa Gertrudis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. (365.7 m.) below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 108 meters) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. (90 m.), and an average width of 82 ft. (25 m.) and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. (8 m.) of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing.

"Those of you who were at last years C.M.P. meeting are aware there was discussion at that meeting concerning the best method of assisting the assayers of metal mines to exchange new ideas and methods of assaying. The opportunity to advise you of what came of that discussion is very much appreciated.There are several societies, including the Chemical Institute of Canada, the Spectroscopy Society and others that could be of some assistance to assayers. However, since these societies cover a rather broad field and not many mine assayers have the opportunity to attend their meetings, it was felt that an organization oriented to the specific needs of the mine assayers would be of more value to them.Several years ago an attempt was made to hold meetings for the benefit of assayers in conjunction with the Conference of Metallurgists held each year by the Metallurgical Society of the C .I.M.M. This did not work because very few of the mine assayers attended the meetings.With the very evident success of the type of meetings the C.M.P. have and the excellent groundwork done by your secretary, Mr. Stevens, in talking about this to mine management and assayers at many mines across the country, it was decided to hold a meeting at Noranda on October 8 to discuss how best we could help ourselves solve our problems.For the initial meeting it was felt that perhaps it would be better to start with a smaller group, so invitations were sent to mines in Ontario and Quebec that were geographically fairly close to Noranda."

"The Line 5 Extension, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently the most important investment in public transportation by Sao Paulo’s state government. It will connect the south part of the city to the city center, crossing through four other major Metro lines and stations; all currently in operation. The total extension of the line is 11 km (6.8 mi), and includes a new parking yard for the trains and 11 new stations. The Brooklin Station, one of the new stations due to be open and operating in 2016, has a unique geometry of five secant shafts.The original design included constructing five secant shafts stabilized by two plastic slurry walls using conventional grab technology. One slurry wall, along the Santo Amaro Avenue, was to contain the contamination plumes, and another was for temporary support to enable the excavation of the shafts. The final retaining wall design was changed to a concrete structural diaphragm wall that reduced the construction time of the shafts by half, allowing the contractor to meet the construction schedule. This solution also avoided dewatering effects in a geological region characterized by Quaternary sediments and environmental contamination plumes. It was the first time that a hydromill was used in such a situation in Brazil. The hydromill, by overcutting the panels, increased the quality of the joints, and decreased the probability of having seepage into the shafts. The hydromill also created a seepage barrier and avoided movement of the contaminated plumes.The GeologyLocal geology is composed of a superficial Quaternary soil, basically soft organic clays and sands and gravels. From the depth of 8 m (26 ft) until 18 m (59 ft), geology is composed by tertiary medium compact sand with thin silt-clay layers. From 18 m (59 ft) down, there are alternations between compact silt-sands layers with very hard clays layers. Each is approximately 5 to 10 m (16.4 ft to 33 ft) thick.The Initial Basic DesignThe original basic design of the Brooklin Station was to be constructed from five 40 m (131 ft) diameter intersecting circular shafts, all in a line along the axis of the Metro tunnel, in 555 days. In the excavation sequence, the odd shafts were first excavated, waterproofed and had part of their inside cast-in-place structure built before the even shafts were excavated. During the excavation of the even shafts, part of the odd shaft’s support was demolished and connected with the even support. A 0.8 m (2.6 ft) thick plastic slurry wall, acting together with the wire mesh reinforced shotcrete support, ensured the excavation stability around the five shafts."

TROUGH it is not a condition of the Award, the fact is that the John Fritz Medal never has been given to an engineer who had not already received one or more similar awards. This "medal for medalists," on the evening of April 20, was presented to Daniel C. Jackling at a special dinner held at the Union League Club in New York. The citation read "For notable industrial achievement in initiating mass production of copper from low-grade ores through the application of engineering principles." The present award recognizes the same accomplishment-the launching and guiding to the port of marvelous success of the Utah Copper Co., first of the so-called "Porphyries"-as did the award of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal by the A.I.M.E. in 1930, and before that the Award of the Gold Medal of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America in 1926. Following the custom a biography of the Medalist had been published in a small pamphlet as a supplement to the John Fritz Medal Book. T. A. Rickard was the au¬thor of the sketch of Mr. Jackling, an innovation being the placing of a copy of the booklet at the place of each of the diners. The committee in charge of the dinner consisted of two past-presidents: R. E. Tally, of the A.I.M.E., who was chairman; Bancroft Gherardi, of the A.I.E.E.; and Thaddeus Merriman, director of the A. S. C. E., the John Fritz Medal being a joint award of the four societies. Frederick M. Becket, President of the A.I.M.E., as chairman for the occasion, briefly stated the purpose of the dinner. He stressed his satisfaction that the award was symbolic of the cooperative professional activities of the four great national organizations of engineers. He introduced Francis Lee Stuart, past-president of the A.S.C.E. and now chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award. Mr. Stuart outlined the history and purpose of the Medal established in 1902 in memory of John Fritz, of Bethlehem, Pa., one of the great pioneers of America's iron and steel industry, metallurgist, and president of the A.I.M.E. in 1894. Mr. Stuart called the roll of former John Fritz Medalists, three of whom, Ralph Modjeski, J. Waldo Smith, and Ambrose Swasey, were present to do honor to Mr. Jackling. He then introduced George Otis Smith, whose privilege it was to present the Medalist for 1933. Dr. Smith was the senior of the four A.I.M.E. representatives on the Board that last year selected Mr. Jackling for the honor. His speech follows in full.

"The iron ores of the Kiruna Mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality but for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998 LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF Analysers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Kiruna Mine of LKAB, Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In the early nineties LKAB decided to develop the Kiruna orebody further down from the 775m main level to a new main level at 1045m. This development programme was realised while in the mineral processing section and in the pellet plant further capacity was added (Wyllie 1996).In addition to deepening of the mine, which opened up 330 million tonnes of ore, the exploitation of the so-called lake ore was included in the future planning, adding another 1 15 million tonnes of mineable ore. At an annual production of approximately 20 million tonnes of ore the Kiruna Mine today looks at a developed ore reserve sufficient for the next 20 years.All of the competitors’ ores traded in the world market are from open pit operations. LKAB compensates for the obvious disadvantages by continuous efforts to make the best possible use of her high quality magnetite ore deposit. This objective is realised by combined efforts in the pellet plant, the mineral processing plant and the mine. Propriety processes, latest big scale equipment and high tech solutions for automation lead to high quality sales products at a reasonable cost."

A 6200 m² cement deep soil mixed (CDSM) wall was constructed for an addition to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. The addition was located along the east side of the existing museum within an existing courtyard and in the area of a recently demolished structure. The basement for the new addition extended up to 9.1 m below the floor slabs of the adjacent buildings. The adjacent buildings are supported on a variety of foundations including; shallow spread footings on alluvial sand deposits, low capacity piles bearing in the alluvial sands and Boston blue clay, and caissons bearing on the alluvial sands and clay. Groundwater was less than one meter below the top of the CDSM wall. The new addition was founded on shallow foundations in the desiccated crust of the Boston Blue Clay. The CDSM wall was selected as the most economical means to control deep seated ground movements, limit movements of adjacent structures, and inhibit groundwater flow into the excavation. Braces and a continuous wale were used to support the CDSM wall where it was located adjacent to structures. Tiebacks were used where there were no structures. Other geotechnical construction at the site included: ? Jet grouting (JG) to improve the ground and provide an impervious subgrade layer at the west end of the addition, ? Concrete pier underpinning was used to support an existing structure on the west end of the site, and ? A secant pile wall using alternating drilled shafts and jet grout columns was used for earth support and a barrier to groundwater flow to allow for the installation of a storage tank at the south end of the site. Inclinometers, total station surveying, vibrating wire strain gauges on the braces and wales and load cells on the tiebacks were used to monitor performance of the excavation support system. The excavation support system performed better than required limiting lateral movements of the adjacent structures to less than 13 mm and vertical settlement to less than 8 mm. No settlements or movement were detected during the construction of the wall. Lateral movement of the CDSM wall was typically below 15 mm with the maximum movement occurring near subgrade.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. INTRODUCTION - DEFINITION & HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE While this symposium is concerned with comminution which, by definition, relates to all stages of size reduction of an ore body to a form suitable for mineral separation, the electrical drive aspect of the grinding section will receive most attention in contrast to the crushing, screening and materials handling elements of the process. The reason for this is that today's large mills, thirty feet diameter and upwards, present mechanical and electrical problems which require a degree of sophistication in their solution not previously required. The ability to satisfy these demands, so far as electrical technology is concerned, largely results from the development of semi-conductor devices. These can now handle typical electrical distribution power levels within remarkably s m all volumes and with high efficiency when compared with the motor-generator sets, mercury arc rectifiers, rotating amplifiers, magnetic amplifiers and vacuum tubes which were commonly used to provide speed and torque controls as recently as the early nineteen-sixties. The hardware available to the electrical engineer has changed dramatically whereby even the simplest control system formerly using hard-wired relays is now superseded by the program m able logic controller with its computer-like memory containing the sequence of operation, in other words, the software. Reverting now to the mineral process itself, it is assumed that the ore body has been mined using explosives and is delivered to the concentrating plant in its 'run of mine' form. The problem becomes one of reducing the material to a size which will permit an acceptable recovery of the mineral with the most economical use of energy. The size of 'run of mine' material will range from about minus five feet for high tonnage open pit operations to minus two feet for the smaller underground mine. The final reduction in size may range from minus ten mesh to minus two hundred mesh (exceptionally as fine as minus six hundred mesh) depending upon the concentration method and dissemination of the mineral values within the ore. There is no single circuit that satisfies all applications, but the pattern of metallurgical equipment use shown in Table 1 appears discernable from current practice, in general terms.
