INTRODUCTION Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines must be designed to comply with the requirements outlined in 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 75. However, very little emphasis is typically placed on the aerodynamic optimization of shaft collar designs, ductwork configurations, and the selection of a fan isolation, or "closing door," system. Field testing has shown that poorly designed systems may produce large pressure losses between the shaft and fan inlet, as well as air turbulence problems which adversely impact fan efficiency and sometimes fan structural integrity. This paper analyzes each component of a surface exhaust fan system for an underground coal mine: • The shaft collar arrangement, • The 45 or 90-degree turning duct that isolates the fan motor from the return airstream, • Alternative ductwork arrangements for parallel fan installations, • The self-closing doors or dampers that are required for multiple fans, and • Horizontal and vertical evas6 arrangements on the discharge side of the fan. While discussion is limited to axial fan installations at shaft mines, most of the recommendations would also apply to centrifugal fan installations and to main mine fans for drift mines. FEDERAL REGULATIONS The mandatory safety standards for underground coal mines that apply to the installation of main mine fans are listed in 30 CFR Part 75.310. Stipulations which impact the design of the fan sys- tem arrangement are contained in paragraphs (a)(l), (a)(5), (a)(6),(d), and (1) of 75.31 0: • Each main mine fan shall be installed on the surface in an incombustible housing; • Each main mine fan shall be protected by weak walls or explosion doors in direct line with possible explosive forces; • Explosion doors or weak walls shall have a cross-sectional area at least equal to the area of the return air shaft or drift opening through which the pressure from an underground explosion would be relieved; • Each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 4.57 m (15 feet) from the nearest side of the mine or shaft opening; • Automatic closing doors shall be provided to prevent possible air reversals through the fans in mines ventilated by multiple main mine fans. The installation of main mine fans underground is prohibited by 30 CFR Part 75.310, (a)(l). Providing explosion doors or weak walls in line with a possible underground explosion and offsetting the fan 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the edge of the shaft preclude the installation of the fan directly over the shaft. In addition, 30 CFR Part 75.507-1 specifies that all electrical equipment used in return air courses be permissible, which requires locating the fan motor outside of the airstream exhausted through the fan. To comply with the Part 75.310 regulations, explosion doors are typically located directly over the shaft as part of the shaft cover or 'bonnet." A sufficiently long section of ductwork placed between the shaft enclosure and fan, equipped with a 45 or 90- degree turn, enables the fan to be offset at least 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the shaft and the motor to be isolated from the airstream. The need for the turn in the ductwork can be eliminated by driving the fan from the discharge side, instead of from the inlet side, and providing for a 90-degree bend in the evas6. For multiple main mine fan systems, self-closing doors can be located on the inlet or discharge side of the fan. FAN SYSTEM COMPONENTS A poorly designed exhaust fan arrangement will produce turbulent conditions at the fan inlet and significant pressure losses between the shaft and fan. Field tests have shown that pressure losses through inlet ductwork at some installations may constitute as much as 30 percent of the total mine head. Unfavorable flow conditions may cause a change in the operating point on the fan performance curve, resulting in reduced fan efficiency and pres- sure generation capability. In some instances, poor airflow distribution through the fan may create mechanical stresses that lead to fan blade or fan housing fatigue failures. The objective in designing an air duct arrangement for a fan system is to provide a low cost duct that will move the air from the shaft to the fan in a uniform air distribution and with minimum energy requirements. The optimum solution is a compromise between technical and economic factors. Aerodynamic design considerations for the shaft collar and cover, fan inlet ductwork for both single and parallel fans, self-closing doors, and evas6 are discussed in the sections below. Shaft Collar/Cover To prevent excessive turbulence and non-uniform air distribution through the fan, a smooth transition for the change in direction of airflow at the top of the shaft must be provided. However, the concrete lining of the shaft is abruptly terminated at the surface at many coal mine installations (see Figure I), creating a sharp 90-degree bend. The first 12 m diameter rakeless thickener in the Australian gold mining industry was installed to treat plant tailings at the St Ives gold plant in April 2000. The plant processes approximately 3.2 M tonnes of ore producing about 430 000 oz of gold per annum using conventional crushing, grinding, gravity and carbon in pulp processing methods.The main benefit sought from the thickener was to improve water recovery in the plant and provide water for a 55 000 oz per annum heap leach operation. The thickener design indicated that more than 128 m3/h of overflow water could be returned directly into the plantÆs water circuit, relieving the demand on the borefields. The resultant surplus in the water circuit would then be available for the heap leach project. Based on laboratory and pilot plant scale tests conducted by EIMCO the thickener was designed to handle up to 700 m3/h of tailings slurry (450 tph of solids) with a 40 per cent oxide component in the ore blend. The normal plant throughput is 565 m3/h of slurry (400 tph of solids). Gold mineralisation in most areas at St Ives comprises quartz-sulphide vein and breccia lodes with common albite-biotite-chlorite alteration assemblages. There are well developed supergene gold horizons in the clay-oxide profile above most of the deposits (Osborne, 2002). This results in a wide variety of ore types being treated. At times 40 - 50 per cent of the ore may be oxide in nature. After some commissioning difficulties associated with instrumentation, the thickener has performed satisfactorily although it has not reached its design capacity. The maximum density achieved under normal operating conditions with 20 per cent oxide ore is about two per cent below the design. The thickenerÆs performance deteriorates further with increasing amounts of oxide ore in the blend. The thickener has provided sufficient water for the successful operation of the heap leach and has also provided some down stream benefits for the gold plant by way of pH and cyanide conditioned thickener overflow water.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. "Spodumene, feldspar and quartz possess similar surface properties, which make the difficult to separate spodumene from other silicate minerals by flotation. The differences of crystal structure, surface property and floatability of three minerals were studied by various technical means. The results show that Li-O and Al-O bonds in spodumene structure are not strong and easy to be broken. However, Al-O and Si-O bonds in feldspar and Si-O bond in quartz are very strong and not easy to be broken. High contents of Al and Li on spodumene surface were found by XPS measurements, which is benefit for the adsorption of anionic collector. The surface energies of main cleavage planes of spodumene (110), feldspar (001) and quartz (001) are 1.88 J/m2, 2.97J/m2 and 2.68J/m2, respectively. Hence, the exposed surfaces of feldspar and quartz are not saturated and easy to adsorb OH- ions from solution and cause the lower IEP than spodumene. The contact angles of three minerals in water are lower than 16º, suggesting that the hydrophilicity of three minerals is high, and the order of hydrophilicity is quartz > feldspar >spodumene. Correspondingly, contact angles and flotation recoveries of spodumene are bigger than that of feldspar and quartz in presence of a combined anionic and cationic collector named YOA.INTRODUCTION Flotation technology plays most important role for the recovery of spodumene from pegmatite ore. Generally, spodumene with fresh surface is easy to be floated using soap and oleic acid as collector, and the best flotation pH range is 4.0 to 9.0. However, the flotability of spodumene will become worse when its surface was polluted by slime which produced by the weathering of spodumene and other silicates (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015). In addition, the species of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ and other metal ions in pulp can not only activate the flotation of spodumene, but also the activation of gangue minerals, and then the flotation selectivity of spodumene from gangue minerals became wores (Wang and Yu 2007; Yu et al. 2014). In order to eliminate the negative effects of slime and metal ions on the flotation of spoddumene, the desliming and long time scrubbing with the addition of NaOH and Na2CO3 were adopted. Usually, NaOH shows the activation for spodumene flotation, and the recovery of spodumene increases with the increase of NaOH dosage. Na2CO3 can eliminate the non selective activation of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ ions in the pulp, and the concentrate grade of spodumene increases with the increase of Na2CO3 dosage. Anionic collectors such as chelants, hydroxamic acid, oxidized paraffin soap, naphthenic acid and oleic acid were widely used for the flotation of spodumene (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015)."

"The effects of five commercially available foaming reagents (range of 0 to 25 ppm) namely Dowfroth 250, Saponin, Yucca, Licorice and Meta-Para Cresol on acid mist control, current efficiency, polarization behavior, and deposit morphology and orientation were investigated. The deposition was carried out using a bench scale electrolysis apparatus (cell volume 3L) at 500 Nm-2 and 38°C for 3 hours from Kidd Creek zinc electrolyte. The acid mist control capability of the various reagents was studied and compared by characterizing the foam layer generated during actual electrowinning conditions and by direct quantitative measurements of acid mist levels on top of the electrowinning cells. Within the range considered, the addition of these reagents reduced the current efficiency, refined the grain size of the deposit, and changed to preferred orientation of most of the deposits. Among the reagents tested, acid mist measurements indicated that Licorice and Dowfroth 250 were the best acid mist suppressant at emissions of 0.30 mglm3 and 031 mg/m3 respectively while Yucca and MPC produced the most mist at 3.0 mg/m3 and 33 mg/m3 emission rates, respectively.IntroductionMost of the world's primary zinc is produced via a combined roast-Ieach-purificationelectrowinning process. Depending on the electrolysis conditions, several additives may be added to the electrolyte. Some (e.g. glue, antimony, sodium carbonate) are added to mainly counteract the detrimental effects caused by impurities while others (e.g. licorice, Saponin) are used as foaming reagents to prevent excessive acid mist formation. Acid mist emission is a problem in many electrolysis operations because it corrodes the equipment and is a health hazard to the workers in the tankhouse as well as it pollutes the environment. Due to recent trends towards more environmental protection and more stringent in-plant hygiene, there is an increasing need to minimize these aerosols. In order to eliminate or minimize these aerosols foaming agents are usually added to the electrolyte to produce a foam layer on top of the electrolyte, thus trapping most of the mist. The ideal foaming agent would trap all of the mist and would not interfere with the electrowinning process. It is also evident that the reagent toxicology, cost and availability are important factors that need to be considered.Review of the available literature clearly indicated that very little work has been done in the past on the subject of acid mist control in electrowinning operations particularly in the area of foaming and anti-misting properties of surfactants. Two papers [1,2] have reviewed briefly the existing technologies for acid mist control. Recently, most of the work in this area has focused on the development of special mechanical devices that could be attached to the electrodes and control the mist generation at the source before it is emitted to the cellhouse [2-5]. On the other hand, extensive body of literature exists that deals with the effects of anti-misting reagents on the electrowinning aspects [6-7]."

"Feldspar may represent 60% of the earth’s crust, but the mineral does not exist in a pure state. It is generally associated with quartz, iron containing minerals such as mica, and titanium containing minerals such as rutile. Feldspar itself can even exist in different lattices from those containing sodium to various divalent ions. As such, its beneficiation has become a process that is quite complicated, when compared to the beneficiation of other minerals. It is this complexity that has made feldspar beneficiation dependent on tailor made reagents to successfully yield the industry specified feldspar products. This paper reviews the mineralogical variations found from two feldspar mines and the development of collectors to specifically target a Fe+Ti concentration of < 0.05%, while maintaining a feldspar recovery greater than 90%.INTRODUCTION Feldspar is a class of aluminum silicates that represents the most abundant mineral on earth (Vidyadhar, 2002). This class of mineral can further be defined by the types or concentrations of cations present in the crystal lattice, MAlSi3O8 (M = K, orthoclase and microcline; M = Na, Albite; M = Ca, Anorthite) (Heyes, 2012). Feldspar is most commonly mined and processed for either the alumina used in glass making or for the alkalis used in ceramics. The alumina is known to improve product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. The alkalis act as flux, which means they not only lower the melting temperature of the mineral mixture, but also assist in connecting the other components present in ceramics. It was stated in 2009 that the world production of feldspar was in excess of 18.3 million tons produced, with the majority coming from China, Italy, and Turkey. Raw feldspar is typically found with quartz, iron containing minerals such as mica, titanium containing minerals such as rutile, and other feldspar minerals (Celik, 2001). Quartz is stated as having a negative effect on the melting point of the feldspar, whilst the iron and titanium based mineral contaminants are known to have negative effects on color and quality of the product produced; these mineral contaminants must therefore be separated prior to application (Barns, 1997 & Celik, 2001). Mineral flotation and magnetic separation are the most common means of feldspar beneficiation. However, conditions vary greatly from mineral contaminant to mineral contaminant (Table 1). Some literature suggests feldspar can be floated with an amine, but this generally yields lower than acceptable recoveries and often still requires the magnetic separation of iron based minerals to achieve the desired grade (Amarante, 1997 & Heyes, 2012). Feldspar flotation can be further improved with the addition of hydrofluoric acid (HF) as a silica depressant and feldspar surface modifier, but this still requires the removal of some of the other minerals first. Rutile can be floated with an anionic fatty acid collector at a pH range of 7-8 or with a petroleum sulfonate at a pH < 4 (Celik, 2001), while mica can be floated with a petroleum sulfonate or an amine collector at a pH of 3.5."

Springvale Colliery is an underground longwall mine situated approximately 10 km north-west of Lithgow in the western coalfields of New South Wales. Following a full-scale review of the mineÆs ventilation system in mid-2010, it was clear that the mine by early 2013 would become ventilation constrained as a result of the increasing size of the mine workings, the predicted worsening tailgate conditions and plans to introduce a fourth continuous miner unit. This realisation led Springvale to embark on a major upgrade of the mine ventilation system that would meet short-term and life-of-mine (LOM) requirements.Included in the upgrade project was the installation of a new high pressure centrifugal main exhaust fan that is capable of overcoming the high resistances imposed frequently on the circuit by restrictions in the tailgate airway. The new fan featuring a 2.5 MW motor is designed to be capable of operating at a quantity of 250 m3/s at a pressure of 7.9 kPa, a substantial improvement over the previous system, which had an operating duty of approximately 145 m3/s at 1.9 kPa. The new fan is of a centre hung design and features a backup diesel motor to maintain ventilation in the event of a power outage.Structural engineering analysis determined that under the operation of the new main fan the existing standard of ventilation control devices (VCDs) at Springvale would not be adequate to withstand the increase in differential pressures. As such, an upgrade of critical VCDs was undertaken utilising a novel high flexural strength (9 MPa) shotcrete and thin spray-on liner, which help serve to safeguard the structural integrity of the appliances and prevent increased leakage as roadway conditions at VCD sites deteriorate over time (a serious problem in many areas of the workings at Springvale).In addition to the main ventilation system upgrade, a separate upgrade focusing on improving development face ventilation was also undertaken. This upgrade included the purchase of two high capacity (22 m3/s) variable inlet vane (VIV) auxiliary fans to facilitate comfortable development face ventilation.The upgrade of the mine ventilation system at Springvale has been three years in the making, but has removed a major business risk in that it has afforded mine planning and operational flexibility (a fourth unit can now be introduced) for the LOM, and importantly provided unprecedented levels of comfort to operators at the working faces where previously ventilation and heat issues were frequently reported. The impact of this on the morale of the workforce, and hence their output, should not be underestimated.CITATION:Gelson, R and Smith, B, 2013. "Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has, to a limited extent, applied risk analysis to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams, pit lakes and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis, as applied to mine impounded water, illustrate what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first.IntroductionImpounded water and high water content wastes at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (4.1 million m3 or 5.4 million cu yd) release, the Mt. Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (4.4 million m3 or 5.8 million cu yd) release, and the Samarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (59 millon m3 or 78 million cu yd) release have renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originate not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes and flooded underground mine workings.Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984, the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. BOR operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of 100 years. Many of these facilities were designed and constructed prior to the development and adaptation of modern soil mechanics in dam engineering. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high-risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved."

REGULAR production of chrome in Turkey started in 1860 with the operation of the Bursa deposits (5, Fig. I). Others were discovered at Makri, near Fethiye (3, Fig. I). For 33 years Turkey remained the principal source of this mineral. While new discoveries were coming in elsewhere, Turkey&apos;s output declined until 1921, as a result of four successive wars, which ruined the economics of the country. In 1927 a revival came with the production of 18,000 tons. In that year the Société Minière de Fethiye was formed. This company now operates mines in the Vilayets of Aydin, Denizli, Burdur and Mentese, and it has reached a maximum production of between 80,000 and 90,000 tons annually. The Turkish output therefore increased from 29,000 tons in 1930 to 55,000 tons in 1931; and to 119,009 tons in 1934. The second phase in the increase in chrome production in Turkey came about in 1935, when the Government decided to reorganize and control the mineral industry of the country according to the principles of "government control" of the present regime. Up to that time the mineral resources of the country had been exploited by private concerns. In 1935, the M.T.A. (Maden Tetkik ve Arama) Institute (Institute of Mining Research and Geological Survey) was established by the Government to do the geological and geophysical survey work and discover new mineral resources for the country. Before the establishment of the M.T.A. Institute, the chief chrome-producing region was Fethiye (3 and 4, Fig. I). As a result of the extensive work of this bureau, many new chrome deposits have been discovered and are now in production. The operational field of the mineral industry was given to Eti Bank, another Government-sponsored and Government-controlled establishment. Eti Bank gradually took over the exploitation of existing mines by purchasing them from privately operated companies. Attention was first given to the Zonguldak collieries and to the different chrome deposits scattered over the country. The Guleman mines (14, Fig. 1) were developed and put in operation in 1936. Since then the bulk of Turkish chrome output has come from this mine, which yields the highest grade ore in the world (averaging 52 per cent Cr2O3). In 1939, the recently discovered chrome deposits to the north of Eskisehir went into production, yielding ore having a Cr2O3 content of 51 to 52 per cent. Today, more than ever, the efforts of both the M.T.A. Institute and the Eti Bank are concentrated on finding new deposits and placing them in operation. There are still many promising regions of the country that merit systematic surveying and prospecting for chrome ores. INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. It is the purpose of this paper to present data on brines occurring in the Frio formation of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to show how their composition varies, (1) with depth below the surface, (2) with depth below the top of the formation, and (3) along the approximate strike. The brines vary in chloride content from 3,180 to 73,000 p.p.m., though the average salinity of the salt waters is shown to vary with total depth; the concentration being 35,000 to 40,000 p.p.m. at 3500 to 5500 ft., slightly less than 50,000 p.p.m. chloride at 5500 to 6500 ft. and average 38,000 to 40,000 below 6500 feet. From the analyses available, it appears that the highest concentration of salts occurs in the upper 300 ft. of the formation, while lower salinity is found with increasing depth below this point. The salt waters from wells in Starr County show less concentration of dissolved salts than in any other group of wells farther north along the strike. In all, 116 analyses from 63 fields and 14 wildcats, from depths ranging from 1300 to 11,400 ft. below the surface and from z to 3240 ft. below the top of the Frio, are recorded. One practical application of study of . water analyses is the correlation of waters occurring above, in, or below the producing sand in the same field or throughout the same formation. The Frio formation, the series of sands and shales occurring below the Marginulina zone and above the Vicksburg, is one of the major oil and gas-producing formations in the Texas Gulf Coast. Fossils are rare or absent in the upper Frio throughout most of the area. When available, cuttings and cores, and electric logs were used to determine the top of the Frio. A change in lithology was used to determine this point in most of the wells, and fossils were used in some of the deep wells. It is realized that a change in lithology is not perfect for correlation purposes over long distances and some of the trends may be influenced by the inability to differentiate between the nonfossiliferous Marginulina zone and the Frio. It underlies virtually all the area shown on the accompanying map (Fig. I). Although it is not productive in the updip facies, it has been explored to a limited degree below I2,000 ft. Further more, toward the coast line future drilling to deeper depths should encounter this formation. Although thousands of wells have penetrated or drilled entirely through the formation, very few water samples have been secured from the many sands occurring in this formation and analyzed. In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64&#160;per&#160;cent to 85&#160;per&#160;cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50&#160;m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200&#160;m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date. &nbsp; L&amp;M Lignite Limited (L&amp;M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&amp;M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&amp;M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

"The Schlumberger configuration used in geoelectrical sounding is slightly adapted here to obtain reliable data for both shallow and deep penetration depths from the same survey. In this configuration, two kinds of current electrode half-spacings are used: the first enables construction of vertical electrical resistivity sounding (VES) curves for shallow depths (<50 m), and the second for depths =250 m. For a given VES location, two field curves are measured and interpreted using two standard approaches. Practical characteristics of such a modified configuration are illustrated with two field applications in Syria. The first aims to characterize the structure of Quaternary and recent deposits in the Al-Ghab depression region, and the second deals with exploration for phosphatic sedimentary units in the Al-Sharquieh mine. La configuration de Schlumberger normalement employée dans les levés géoélectriques a été légèrement modifiée afin d’obtenir des données fiables à faible et forte profondeur durant le même levé. Dans cette nouvelle configuration, deux types de demi-espacements des électrodes sont utilisés : le premier permet le développement de courbes de sondage de résistivité électrique verticales (REV) pour les faibles profondeurs (<50 m), et le second atteint des profondeurs =250 m. Pour une localité REV donnée, deux courbes de champs sont donc mesurées et interprétées grâce à deux approches standardisées. Les caractéristiques pratiques de cette configuration modifiée sont illustrées par deus exemples d’application en Syrie. There are challenges in mining deep tabular ore deposits using the open stoping method, particularly mining remnant panels towards the end of mine life. The remnant panels have experienced stress concentration and are in the failing or post failure state causing drilling and loading difficulties, ground movement, induced seismicity and ground instability problems. As more mines are going deep, without effective ground control management, the mine production will be interrupted and equipment damage and personnel injury are likely to occur. Mining at Falconbridge Lockerby Mine located in the Sudbury Basin was concentrated in the deep zone from late 1990s to 2004. The remnant panels situated approximately from 1800m to 1920m below surface were mined in 2004 before the mine closure. These panels were in the central section of the orebody along strike. The orebody was relatively narrow ranging from 5m to 15m and steep dipping at 70o to 80o. Because of the retreat mining sequence and the mining depth, stress concentration, wall closure and seismicity had caused a number of mining difficulties. Managing these challenges was critical in achieving the mine production target without compromising personnel safety and excavation stability. A comprehensive ground control management approach was adopted to mine the remnant panels at depth. The measures taken included ground movement monitoring, understanding the movement pattern of the footwall rock and selecting appropriate support systems, analyzing seismic monitoring data and defining re-entry protocol, brow support design and restricting access. This paper presents these ground control measures and the experience gained in successfully mining the deep remnant panels at Lockerby Mine.

MSHA has promulgated a rule to limit the exposure of underground metal/nonmetal miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). In May 2008, the final personal exposure limit will be lowered to 160 µg/m3 total carbon. To comply with this rule, mine operators are implementing a variety of control technologies. In this study two types of control technologies (ventilation and cabs) which are being implemented in limestone mines were investigated. Two stone mines in this study use large diameter propeller fans for main mine ventilation and direct the air to the faces using auxiliary fans, stoppings, and long pillars while bypassing the old mine workings. NIOSH measured for sub-micrometer elemental carbon (EC) using SKC DPM cassettes (analyzed using NIOSH 5040) and a near real time instrument. With the present ventilation and the number and type of vehicles used, the concentration of EC from DPM at the working areas was at or below 400 µg/m3 for both mines and about 166 µg/m3 and 251 µg/m3 at the returns. The real time data showed that the ventilation was reaching the working areas and effectively diluting the DPM. Environmental cabs were also used to reduce DPM exposures in three underground limestone mines. Using NIOSH method 5040 and near real time EC instrumentation, NIOSH sampled inside and outside of a loader cab at one of these limestone mines to determine the effectiveness of the cab. The cab was found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM as long as the cab system was properly maintained, and doors and windows were closed.

In 1991 the problems of water inflow at the mine were addressed by a three-phase study. A three-dimensional finite-element computer code, CFEST (Coupled Fluid, Energy and Solute Transport), was used to model the system of groundwater flow around the mine, allowing assessment of the nature of the hydrological regime and of the various recharge mechanisms and sources of inflow. A regional (111 km2) model was used to simulate conditions of low to average mine inflow and provide boundary conditions for the subsequent local (16.8 km2) model. The regional model produced inflows of 0.26 m3/s and the local model 0.25 m3/s. With the use of constant head conditions to simulate a saturated flood plain along the Gays River and on doubling the rate of surface recharge, the local model produced a maximum mine inflow of 0.255 m3/s, in contrast to a measured peak mine inflow of 0.37 m3/s. The discrepancy suggests that during periods of high river level surface water gains access to features with high permeability, such as sinkholes, that may be connected directly or indirectly to the mine workings. Improved simulation of high inflow conditions can probably be achieved by determining the hydraulic conductivity of the river-bed and flood-plain sediments and modelling known sinkholes as discrete units. Possibilities for controlling the amount of inflow to the mine include sealing the flood plain with dykes, checking regularly for new sinkholes, which should be filled and capped, maintaining adequate mine drainage, and monitoring well levels and pressures on a continuous basis.

The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting&#160;over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the&#160;existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall.&#160;It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the&#160;blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and&#160;to avoid&#160;adverse effects&#160;from vibration and gases generated by the&#160;detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical&#160;designs and&#160;test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis,&#160;it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast.&#160;This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms&#160;of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results&#160;with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.
