A new rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed by CSIRO was evaluated by PIRSA and GA on a wide variety of mineralised properties in South Australia, including the Emmie Bluff, iron oxide copper-gold-style prospect on the Stuart Shelf. During a three-month campaign in South Australia in 2003 the system logged over 50 000 metres of core from the State Core Library, company prospects and mines. The new system uses automated core tray handling, continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy, and digital imaging, to characterise and identify dominant mineral species on core, chips and pulps, at spatial resolutions of ~1 cm (spectral data) and ~0.1 mm (image data). The system can log up to 1000 m of core per day and several thousand metres of drill chips. Mineralogy is pre-interpreted using specialised identification software trained on a selected suite of minerals showing characteristic absorption features within the measured spectral range. On core from the Emmie Bluff iron oxide copper-gold prospect, 470 km NW of Adelaide and 80 km SSE of the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit, the spectral mapping system was able to characterise a number of alteration zones enveloping the sub-economic Cu-Au mineralisation. These consist of distal white mica phases showing decreasing Al content towards mineralisation, a zone of increased iron oxide content in the hangingwall to mineralisation, and a zone proximal and coincident to Cu-Au mineralisation that is enriched in chlorite with variable Mg/Fe chemistry. Additionally the results show background spectral characteristics that mimic the magnetite distribution.

The Bogong Hydropower Development is a 140 MW high head power project currently under construction in Northern Victoria. The project is the final link in the Kiewa hydroelectricity scheme, which was originally constructed in the 1950s. Due to its location in the Alpine National Park, the waterway for the Bogong project must be located entirely underground. A series of shafts and tunnels is being constructed to transfer the water from the headworks at McKay Creek to the new power station located on the shores of Lake Guy in Bogong village. The difference in elevation between the headworks and the power station is greater than 420 m, which poses particular issues for the design and construction of the waterway. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and construction planning aspects of the tunnelling and shaft excavation and lining works for the waterway. The tunnelling works includes 5.7 km of hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnel, 1.1 km of drill and blast tunnel and two deep shafts. The tunnels and shafts are lined with a mixture of permanent rock bolts and shotcrete, concrete lining and steel lining. The viability of the Bogong Hydropower Development relies heavily on the ability of the TBM to excavate at high speed through the East Kiewa Grandiorites. Particular attention was given during the construction planning stage to understanding the excavation characteristics of this material, and designing a suitable hard rock TBM that would be capable of meeting the program requirements of the project.

This paper is in the nature of a protest against the dangerous propaganda afoot for the prevention of new mining undertakings and which is based on the imaginary 'blue ruin' conditions supposed to exist in the industry. An article by Mr. G. R. Pratt, A.M.E.I.C. in the first issue of the Western Canada News, February 2nd, 1925, and entitled "Review of Coal Mining in Alberta", is an excellent example of this type of propaganda. The article is a tissue of misstatements, faulty deductions and erroneous conclusions. For instance it contains the statement that some coal measures in Alberta are mined at great depth - whereas we all know that there is no coal mined at great depth anywhere in the province; another error is the classification of all mines under one head irrespective of whether they are mining prospects, 'country banks', or pukka mines equipped with railway facilities; and I believe that suppressio veri is tantamount to suggestio falsi. The bulk of his article hinges on a Table 1, which shows the details of coal produced in Alberta during 1923. Studying this table Mr. Pratt, in the manner of a conjurer producing rabbits from a hat, offers the following for the confusion of the public:- (1) "Waste effort, want of capital, waste of coal resources which result from unrestricted development"; the fact being that the waste is due to the failure of the Department of the Interior to exercise the powers which are inherent in the form of lease.

With the post-war expansion of mmmg activities on its Western group of mines, the management of Lake View and Star Limited has commenced a project for the improvement of underground ventilation.The major part of this project is to provide adequate return airways for the ventilation of the deep levels. To this end, the Ivanhoe South Extended shaft is being enlarged, and ultimately an exhaust fan with a capacity of 180,000 cu. ft. of air per minute will be installed at the shaft collar.Prior to 1932, the shaft was used exclusively for baling water from the 800 and 2,000 ft. levels. These two levels are the only ones connected to workings from the Horseshoe lease. After the installation of pumping plant at the Horseshoe Main Shaft, baling was discontinued, and the water was graVitated from dams to the pumps on the 1,000 and 2,000 ft. levels.Water makes into the shaft, through a series of fault planes, between the 600 and 1,500 ft. horizons. The total flow is 16 gal. per minute, of which approximately 7 gal. per minute graVitates to the 800 ft. level. As a big proportion of the water dropped uncontrolled through the shaft, a downcast current of air approximating 20,000 c.f.m. was induced. This air ventilated a limited area of workings in the Horseshoe lease, between the 2,000 and 2,360 ft. levels.In 1938, it was decided to reverse the direction of the airflow in the shaft. Quebrada Blanca (QB) is a copper project located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile. The operation is situated 170 km ( 105 miles) southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 km (18 miles) west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The QB ore body is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 Mt (93 million st) grading 1.3% copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million tons grading about 0.5% copper. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20- $30 million exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. Falconbridge, however, decided not to develop the property. It was returned to its owners, Empresa National de Mineria (ENAMI), a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988, ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through public bidding. Cominco Resources, then 61% owned by Cominco Ltd., examined the property and the extensive data base developed by Falconbridge. In conjunction with its parent company, Cominco Resources submitted a proposal to ENAMI to construct an open- pit mine, with heap leaching and solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) processing facilities. The plan would use patented heap leaching technology developed by Sociedad MineraPudahuel (SMP), a privately owned Chilean mining company. At that time, a $150-million project that would produce about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of cathode copper was envisaged.

I feel sure that the apparent anomolies between his findings and ours arise as a result of the different experimental methods used. The modem oxygen electrode method he used is sensitive to nano moles of oxygen uptake whereas the method we used was only sensitive to micro moles at best. Furthermore, our experimental method did not permit measurements to be made in the first ten to fifteen minutes of reaction, the very time he is observing. Direct comparison of his data to ours is made difficult because of not knowing the specific area of the samples he used. However, we found that precipitation of PbS using sodium sulphide gave rise to samples of area approximately 30 m2 g - 1. Noticing the rapid decline in oxidation rate over ten minutes, as reported in Table 1, one can conclude that we could not measure the rate after ten minutes using our method. Taking the above area I estimate that at these rates only a small fraction of surface would be oxidised in a period of hours. I can only conclude that at some point a change in oxidation mechanisms occurs giving rise to a much faster rate such as we observed. Finally, I would like to comment on the apparent inertness of the homogeneously precipitated lead sulphide sample 11. This method of preparation we found to give specific areas of 20 to 30 times less than other methods and this would account for the very low oxidation rate.

In 14-karat gold alloys, as in 10-karat gold alloys,3 the addition of such metals as zinc, nickel, copper and silver produces a wide range of physical and chemical proper-ties such as color, hardness, corrosion resist-ance and melting points. These important factors made gold alloys desirable in the optical work and for jewelry. In 14-karat gold alloys, as well as in 10-karat or 12-karat, it is possible to have two golds of the same color, one of which will corrode more than the other, although it may be harder. Some of these alloys have been investigated by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,5 and L. Sterner Rainer.4 In this group of alloys the gold content of 58.3 per cent (14-karat) was held constant, while the copper varied from 36 to 24 per cent. The balance of the alloy consisted of one, two, or three of the metals silver, zinc, and nickel. All the alloys were melted in an induction furnace and cast into an ingot that meas-ured 3 by 1/4 by 3/4 in. The method of determining the melting points, color deter-minations and acid test have been discussed in previous papers by the author.2,3 It is necessary to use small test bars (Fig. r). The tensile bars were annealed at 1300°F. for 20 min. and then air-cooled. There being a very marked drop when the yield point was reached, "the drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point.

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals, located in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC, opened in September, nine years after initial fundraising efforts were begun. The 1,858-m2 (20,000-sq ft), $16-million hall was mostly funded by private groups and individuals, including $1.7 million from 43 National Mining Associa¬tion (NMA) member companies. Companies that contributed more than $100,000 included Cyprus Amax, Phelps Dodge, Asarco, Homestake Mining, BHP, Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, Exxon Coal and Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining and Peabody Holdings. The mining industry's contributions funded a walk-through Mine Gallery. It. features diora¬mas of four mines, as well as numerous specimens associated with the mines. The Mine Gal¬lery demonstrates to the public the importance of mining. The hall was named in honor of Hooker. She contributed $5 million in cash plus the Hooker Yellow Starburst Diamonds to the project. The hall is touted by the Smithsonian as the "most comprehensive earth science complex of its kind." It consists of seven galleries, each devoted to different aspects of gems, minerals and rocks. In addition to the Mine Gal¬lery, the hall contains a collection of gemstones and jewelry pieces, an extensive collection of minerals, a gallery devoted to plate tectonics and a gallery devoted to the moon, meteorites and the solar system. The new hall is a complete makeover of the old and outdated Geology Hall. It was built in the 1960s and finally closed to the public in 1995.

"The first segment of the Second Avenue Subway extension is approaching construction completion. The new extension will operate along Second Avenue from 96th Street to 63rd Street, where it will divert west along the existing 63rd Street line, stopping at the Lexington Avenue/63rd Street Station. The new line will have stateof-the-art stations at 96th, 86th, 72nd and 63rd streets.Most of the two-track, twin-tunnel subway was constructed using bored tunnel methods (Figure 1), with a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The launch and retrieving box of the TBM was strategically located at the south end of the 96th Street Station where bedrock exists approximately 70 ft (21.3 m) below street level. The TBM launch box and the 96th Street Station (Figure 2), including the ancillary facilities adjacent to the station, were constructed by the cut-and-cover method. The cut-and-cover work required the contractor to design and implement a stiff, tightlybraced retaining wall, approximately 100 ft (30.5 m) long, to tie the existing tunnel constructed in the 1970s to the new station, temporary street decking over the entire excavation, and a wide range of excavation support systems at various locations.The cut-and-cover construction posed significant challenges including: installation of street decking on busy Second Avenue, relocation and suspension of the myriad utilities beneath the streets, and configuration of a lateral support system that would minimize movement of adjacent structures but not slow down excavation activities. This article describes the innovative solutions developed to manage and facilitate safe and efficient construction without disrupting Second Avenue, a major southbound one-way thoroughfare.The work was performed in several phases involving: (1) preconstruction condition survey of existing buildings, (2) installation of instrumentation and monitoring, (3) major utility relocation efforts to move vital utilities from within the alignment of the slurry wall on both the east and west sides of the avenue, (4) implementation of maintenance and protection of traffic plans, (5) installation of temporary street decking across the entire avenue and over the excavation to allow an orderly movement of traffic and pedestrians, (6) staged excavation and installation of an intricate temporary bracing system beneath the decking (7) step-by-step construction of the new subway station’s structure and (8) staged removal of the bracing as the structure gained sufficient strength to resist the lateral loads. The main focus in this article is the design and construction of the temporary street decking and lateral bracing systems; the utility suspension system and the north tie-in that allowed the daunting task of excavation and construction of a new subway station in bustling New York City, with minimal disruption to the community, businesses and everyday traffic."

"Construction works at the Helsinki city sea shoreline requires dredging and handling of contaminated sediments. Most of these soft dredged sediments are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical and environmental properties of the dredged sediment in order to utilize the material in construction. The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor where the dredged sediments are disposed in basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and transported to utilization sites. The volume of these basins is about 90 000 m3. So far these basins have been used three times during the years 2011-2014. The most applied binder has been cement. Its high price and carbon footprint have encouraged use alternative binders. Other used binder materials include fly ash and end product of desulphurization from coal combustion, and fly ash from combustion of Estonian oil shale. The technical and environmental properties of stabilized sediments have been studies in the laboratory and in situ thoroughly. Some properties of the stabilized sediments which have been studied are: compression strength, modulus, hydraulic conductivity, leaching of contaminants, etc. The leaching test results show that heavy metal leaching is very low with all binder materials tested.1. INTRODUCTIONContaminated marine sedimentsMarine sediments in the coastal areas are often contaminated as a consequence of industrial and port activities, as well as the influence of cities located there. Construction activities and reclamation of shore line require dredging and handling of contaminated sediments since the level of contamination inhibit dumping of dredged sediments into the sea. Based on their technical properties, most of these dredged soft and watery sediments (clay, gyttja, etc.) are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Economic, sustainable and environmentally safe management of contaminated, dredged sediments is a key issue in many construction sites.In the City of Helsinki, mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical properties of the dredged sediments in order to utilize the material in construction. Owing to stabilization / deep mixing / solidification, also the contamination is encapsulated in a monolithic solid of a high structural integrity. Thus, contaminants migration is restricted by the decreased surface area exposed to leaching.The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor (a place of Helsinki called Jätkäsaari) where dredged sediments are disposed into stabilization basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and then transported to final utilization sites. The location and principle of these basins is presented in Figures 1-4. The overall volume of these four stabilization basins is about 90 000 m3."

"The Red Bluff porphyry is a tabular 2 km long north-west trending Early Jurassic quartz diorite to monzodiorite body that intrudes a folded Triassic greywacke sequence in the lskut River area, northwestern British Columbia. The porphyry is 500 m to 800 m northeast of the Snip orebody, which is a southwest-dipping shear-vein, termed the Twin zone that contains approximately 35 tonnes of gold.The intrusion associated with the mineralization is characterized by 0.3 cm to 4 cm phenocrysts of K-feldspar in a mediumgrained plagioclase porphyritic matrix. It is overprinted by pervasive sericite + quartz ± K-feldspar ± biotite (potassic) alteration characterized by intense stockworking of quartz veins containing magnetite--hematite bands. This assemblage is cut successively by quartz veins with minor iron-oxides and pyrite, and by younger pyrite veins with phyllic envelopes. The system is gold-rich but copper-poor, with typical grades between 0.25 g/t and 0.6 g/t Au, and 0.1% and 0.2% Cu. All styles of alteration and veining have similar abundances of these metals. Where southwest- and north-east dipping shear zones are developed in the porphyry, veins of all types are sheeted and foliation parallel. These sheeted zones are interpreted to be syntectonic. Asymmetric phenocrysts, folded veins and oblique foliations developed in the 130 haulageway of the Snip mine imply oblique normally-directed shear on the southwest-dipping foliation.The adjacent Twin zone is a high-grade auriferous shear-vein system that is internally banded with: (1) carbonate-chlorite-biotite veins, with textures indicating formation at least partially by wallrock replacement, and (2) dilatant quartz-sulphide veins. Veins commonly have potassic alteration envelopes that contain biotite ± calcite ± K-feldspar. The zone is highly deformed and schistose, with numerous kinematic indicators including shear bands, asymmetric folds, rotated porphyroclasts and oblique foliations that indicate a normally-directed shear sense which is parallel to that indicated by fabrics within the porphyry.Precious and base metal veins within 2 km or 3 km of the Red Bluff porphyry are zoned. Veins and shear-veins proximal to the intrusion, such as the Twin zone, are typically enriched in gold, copper and molybdenum, and have potassic alteration envelopes dominated by biotite. Distal veins usually contain relatively abundant zinc and lead and have sericitic alteration envelopes. Structures of both types have an Early Jurassic galena Pb-Pb isotope signature.The similarities in structural fabrics and alteration histories in both the Twin zone and the porphyry, the zoning of the vein systems in the area, and the apparently concordant Early Jurassic zircon U-Pb age from the porphyry and galena Pb-Pb dates from the Twin zone and surrounding vein systems suggest that intrusion, semi-brittle deformation and a large mineralizing hydrothermal system were closely related temporally and genetically."

"For decades, the International Market Place (IMP) has been an icon in the heart of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was famous for Duke Kahanamoku’s restaurant where people flocked to hear Don Ho sing in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, it was a bustling, open-air hub of small vendors who peddled everything from Hawaiian souvenirs and jewelry to food court meals and farmer’s market produce. Small buildings and shacks that housed the businesses were located on a curved tract of land — just one block off the beach — that stretches from Kalakaua Avenue to Kuhio Avenue. The entrance to the complex is dominated by a huge, old (circa 1850) Banyan tree. This tract is owned by the Queen Emma Land Company. Queen Emma was a Hawaiian Queen from the 1800s. Revenue from the land has supported the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for decades.The reimagined IMP is owned by Taubman Centers, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and CoastWood Capital Group of San Francisco, Calif. The IMP will offer a distinctive collection of upscale fashion and lifestyle retailers, including Hawaii’s only Saks Fifth Avenue store, as well as ten sit-down restaurants, including concepts by award-winning chefs Michael Mina and Roy Yamaguchi. The mall features two large open-air courts, the first of which has the huge Banyan tree as its entryway centerpiece. The second open-air court, called Queen’s Court, includes a stage and mature monkeypod trees and a few palm trees. Foundation SelectionAfter a geotechnical exploration that was directed by SME, Plymouth, Mich., and performed by Geolabs, Honolulu, it was discovered that the historical site had hidden and challenging foundation conditions. The subsurface conditions included a very deep but now in-filled ancient river valley containing more than 180 ft (54.9 m) of lagoonal deposits consisting of normally consolidated plastic clayey silts and silty clays with blow counts mainly varying in N-value from 1 to 6. The silt was underlain by several soft coralline layers, some overconsolidated clays and various basalt layers. The static groundwater level on the site was at a depth of about 5 ft (1.5 m), closely matching sea level.Although driven piles had previously been used as the preferred deep foundation support for adjacent structures, this area of town is now fully developed and local noise ordinances preclude their use. Augercast piles were initially considered, but when the general contractor dck/FWF, Pittsburgh, Pa., asked for bids for the augercast piles, several foundation contractors offered alternate systems. The practical installation depth of augercast piles was limited and due to the depth of the in-filled alluvial valley, this system could likely have left soft silt below the tips of the piles over much of the site."

"The control of fugitive dust in high-latitude openpit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomena resulting in complicated flow regimes as well as atmospheric inversion due to the lack of adequate insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (one conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional openpit mine geometries were simulated for different seasonal conditions using a computational-fluid-dynamics package from Software Cradle. The airflow was solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model. The concept of particle tracking was used to predict the flow patterns of dust particles. For various climatic conditions and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size, from PM0.1 to PM10, and concentration were generated at various locations and dispersed by the airflows inside the openpit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit were reported at various time intervals. In the summer season, airborne dust particles were quickly transported outside the openpit domain. In the winter season, however, the development of atmospheric inversion significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the openpit domain. IntroductionThe computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) modeling of openpit mines is challenging. In a recent paper (2015), we presented different constraints and challenges in developing a three-dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. The simulation results of a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model by Shi et al. (2000) showed that both the mechanical and thermal forces are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an openpit mine. Alvarez et al. (2007) used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium-sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al. (2010) introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. "Control of fugitive dust in high latitude open-pit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomenon resulting in complicated flow regimes, and atmospheric inversion due to lack of adequate solar insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (One conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional open-pit mine geometries are simulated for differing seasonal conditions using the CRADLE-CFD package. The airflow is modeled using Standard Kappa-Epsilon Turbulence Model solved by RANS equations. The concept of particle tracking is used to predict the flow pattern of dust particles. For various climatic conditions, and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size (PM0.1 to PM10) and concentration are generated at various locations of a mine and dispersed by the airflow pattern inside the open-pit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit is reported at various time intervals. The development of atmospheric inversion during the winter season significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the open-pit domain. While during the summer, airborne dust particles were transported outside the open-pit domain in a short time. INTRODUCTIONComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of open-pit mines is challenging. In a recent paper, Bhowmick et. al. [1] presented different constraints and challenges in developing a 3-Dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. Simulation results of a 3D non-hydrostatic model by Shi et al. [2] showed that both the mechanical and thermal forcing are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an open-pit. Alvarez et al [3] used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al [4] introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. "The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

"Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

"RÉSUMÉ La lixiviation acide d’un minerai oxydé cupro-cobaltifère en milieu non réducteur et en milieu réducteur en utilisant le Fe2+ et le métabisulfite de sodium (SMBS) a été étudiée et les résultats ont été comparés. Les tests de lixiviation ont été effectués à température ambiante, dans une pulpe à 30 % solide, avec une vitesse d’agitation de 600 tr/min, un potentiel redox de 350 mV pour les tests en milieu réducteur, et un pH de 1,8. Les tests de lixiviation avec usage du SMBS comme réducteur ont donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation du cuivre. Pour le cobalt, c’est l’usage du Fe2+ qui a donné la meilleure cinétique de lixiviation. L’augmentation de la dose du fer dans la solution au-delà de 5 g/L a influencé négativement les rendements de lixiviation du cuivre et du cobalt. ABSTRACT Acid leaching of a copper-cobaltiferous oxide ore in a non-reducing environment and in a reducing environment using Fe2+ and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) was studied and the results compa¬red. The leaching tests were performed at room temperature, in a 30% solids pulp, with a shaking speed of 600 rpm, a redox potential of 350 mV for the tests performed in the reducing environment, and a pH of 1.8. The leaching tests using the SMBS as a reducing agent produced the best copper leaching kinetics. As for cobalt, the best leaching kinetics was achieved using Fe2+. An increase in the amount of iron in the solution above 5 g/L negatively influenced copper and cobalt leaching yields. INTRODUCTION La République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) est un pays reconnu dans le monde pour son sous-sol qui regorge d’énormes quantités de cuivre et de cobalt (USGS, 2014; Palisade Research, 2016). La technique qui semble être la plus recommandée pour extraire à la fois le cuivre et le cobalt des minerais oxydés cupro-cobaltifères est la lixivia-tion acide en milieu réducteur. Cette technique est appliquée par la majorité des sociétés minières qui exploitent ces minerais dans l’ex-province du Katanga en RDC, à savoir: Tenke Fungurume Mining, Mutanda Mining, Kamoto Cop¬per Company, Sicomines, Gécamines, Boss Mining, Chemaf, Ruashi Mining et Somika. L’usage d’un agent réducteur est indispensable pour l’obtention d’un bon rendement de lixiviation du cobalt. "PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) and Associated Works will be the seventhland crossing between Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.The project includes site formation of about 23 hectares of land for the development of the BCP and anapproximately 11-kilometre (km) long dual two-lane trunk road (the “Connecting Road”), connecting theBCP with the existing Fanling Highway. The route alignment is within a relatively rural area of HongKong, with very limited similar infrastructure works carried out nearby. It passes beneath bothmountainous terrain, and alluvial plains, and falls within an area of several major regional faults andassociated metamorphism, resulting in a complex variety of ground conditions.ALIGNMENTThe Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SpecialAdministrative Region carried out extensive public engagement in selecting the alignment of theConnecting Road. Over 70 consultation forums with public bodies, including the District Councils, RuralCommittees, local representatives, etc. were held during the alignment design process. In order toalleviate the concerns of various nearby villages, and to minimize land clearance and environmentalproblems, the original alignment of 10 km long (3.5 km of tunnels and 6.5 km of viaducts) was revised toits final alignment of 11 km long which comprises 5.7 km of tunnels, 4.3 km of viaducts and 1.0 km of atgrade roads.The finally adopted alignment commences at the southern end with an interchange with the existingFanling Highway, part of Route 9, which is a dual three lane expressway currently being widened to dual4 lane. Alongside the expressway is the main rail connection to the mainland of China, and theinterchange viaducts connecting to the southern portal of the Lung Shan tunnel must cross over thisrailway. The southern portal is located in the foothills of Lung Shan, and the 4.8km long tunnel is alignedin a north-northeasterly direction. The southern half passes under mountainous terrain of Lung Shan,and then crosses a valley containing the Kwan Tei river. The northern section comprises low hillsseparated by an alluvial plain and Tan Chuk Hang village area. At the northern end, the tunnel turns tothe north-west to connect with Sha Tau Kok road, an existing single carriageway road, with a newroundabout interchange. Mid-way along this tunnel there will be a ventilation building, connected to the main tunnel by a 330m long ventilation adit. To the north-western side of this interchange is the900m long Cheung Shan tunnel, and after this the remaining 4.3km of the highway connecting with theBoundary Control Point is to be constructed as an elevated viaduct. The alignment is shown in Figure 1."
