Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

A combined method for sizing in the sub-micron range was developed using centrifugation and gamma emission. Its essential features are: 1) Centrifugation of suspended mineral in water carried out at 4°C where water has its maximal density and zero temperature gradient of density 2) Gamma activition of the sample suspension induced by irradiating it in a nuclear reactor prior to centrifugation 3) Measurement of the activity of a beam of suspension as it is sedimenting in the centrifuge, using a scintillation counter provided with a discriminator. Albite, the sodium feldspar, was used as feed to the comminution step, and the induced gamma activity of Na24 was measured. Dissolved sodium ion caused a a non-settling activity in the measurement. Other "noise" is due to scattered gamma radiation from albite particles in the centrifuge outside of the line of sight. These two activities were obtained sep arately and subtracted from the total activity counted. The relative solid concentration in the suspension under the collimating slit is proportional to this net activity. The cumulative weight per cent of undersize particles was calculated and plotted against size on logarithmic scales. The relationship was found to be linear down to about 30 mµ. The specific surfaces calculated from particle size distribution agree with those measured by krypton gas adsorption. The measurement of particle size distribution of comminution products has been of interest in clarifying the mechanism of the process. The Gaudin-Schuhmann equation1,2 relates the cumulative percentage undersize, y, to relative particle size x/k. The particle size, x, and the size modulus, k, together with the distribution modulus, m, characterize the particle size distribution, m is the slope of a plot of log (y) against log (x/k). This equation has been verified for ground particles down to 1 micron in size.3'4 For particle sizes smaller than a few microns, the precision and facility of sedimentation and microscope techniques become questionable. Use of a centrifuge which shortens settling time from weeks to hours is attractive. Many centrifugal methods have been proposed; however, determination of the solid concentration of the suspension at a reference level as a function of time is difficult, and sampling the suspension is likely to introduce errors. Measurement of particle size distribution by X-ray absorption in gravitational5 and in centrifugal6 sedimentation have also been tried. In these methods, the absorption coefficient for the solid is independent of size, since the wave lengths of the X-rays and gamma-rays are orders of magnitude smaller than the particles. Radiometric techniques7 in size distribution measurement have been developed within the last several years. They offer advantages over usual gravimetric and optical methods. PRINCIPLE OF METHOD The combined method of centrifugation and gamma emission for sizing in submicron range described in the present paper has the following essential features. 1) Centrifugation is carried out at 4 ± 0.1°C. Convection currents in the water phase due to density changes caused by temperature variation may disturb completely the settling system. To avoid this difficulty, the unique property of water having zero temperature gradient of density at 4°C is used. 2) Prior to size measurement the sample suspension is irradiated in a nuclear reactor and gamma activity induced. The gamma activity of the particles sedi-mented radially is measured by a scintillation counter provided with a discriminator. By this method, interruption of centrifugation by withdrawing samples is avoided and the counting rate at any time represents the solid concentration in the suspension at the level of the collimating slit of the centrifuge at the particular time at which the measurement is made. 3) By proper selection of the feed material and of the comminution device, gamma activities of foreign

The concept of sodium single-ion equivalent activity as developed by Gondouin, Tixier and Simard,' was used to determine the filtrate resistivity-activity relationships for 150 laboratory and 49 field drilling muds. With the exception of the native and phosphate high-resistivity muds and the calcium-treated muds, the filtrate resistivity-activity relationships were found to be within 20 per cent of that for pure sodium-chloride solutions. Gondouin, et al,* previously suggested a method of treating the high-resistivity muds in quantitative electrical log analysis. A new treatment is presented which uses the P-alkalinity of the filtrate as a correlating parameter in handling the calcium-treated muds in quantitative electrical log analysis. INTRODUCTION Gondouin, Tixier, and Simard in 1957 introduced new interpretive procedures for analyzing the self-potential curve of electric logging. They re-emphasized the previous work of the Schlumberger brothers, Wyllie and others, and re-defined the activity concept in terms of a number which they termed the effective resistivity. Their procedures are particuarly effective when the connate-water resistivities are less than 0.08 ohm-m or greater than 0.3 ohm-m. For gyp muds where the calcium content is known, a procedure was presented which allows calculation of the connate-water resistivity with improved accuracy. These procedures assume that one of the fluids in the system is a pure sodium-chloride solution, but they are not limited by the assumptions. For the fresh and saline connate waters, for instance, it is assumed that the drilling mud filtrate is a pure sodium-chloride solution. For the gyp mud interpretive procedure, it is assumed that the connate water is a pure sodium-chloride solution. Brown,' on the other hand, has suggested that it would be extremely fortuitous if drilling mud filtrates could all be treated electrochemically as sodium-chloride solutions, and he cites some examples where discrepancies exist. A study has been made of the deviations of sodium single-ion equivalent activities, an of drilling mud filtrates from that of pure sodium-chloride solutions. Drilling fluids in common use on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and laboratory-controlled muds were investigated. Using a cell patterned after Gondouin, et al, (Fig. I), the equivalent activities were measured. It should be remembered here that the activity measured is merely an index which uses numbers that represent the sodium single-ion equivalent activity a,., of the mud filtrate. The membrane potential developed across the cell was determined with a null-type potentiometer. The resistivities of the solutions were measured by the four-electrode method. The resistivity system was calibrated by using saturated KC1 solution as a standard. Chemical properties of the drilling fluids studied were measured with standard API-approved equipment for the particular property in question. For the activity measurements, two shale discs were chosen to serve as cationic membranes. These two discs were both 1 1/4 in. in diameter and, respectively, 1/4 and 1/8 in. in thickness. The membrane potential, Em, was determined using the shale discs as cationic selective membranes separating two standard sodium-chloride solutions of known mean activity. Then by comparing the constant Km in the following equation, with the theoretical value of — 59 mv at 75OF, the perfection of the membrane was determined. The variation of Km for the two membranes used in this experimental work, as well as one of the many unsuitable membranes, is shown in Fig. 2. The measurement of the activity of mud filtrate involves the balancing of its combined individual activities against a standard solution of known mean activity. At the point where there exists zero potential across the membrane cell, the activity effects may be assumed equal for all practical purposes. MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia's largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM's Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia's largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston's final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine's geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan's Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser's underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.'s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows '95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.

SINCE the excellent studies of metal powder compaction executed by Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff, no work on the subject has appeared in the technical literature. Kamm et al. were the first to investigate quantitatively the distribution of density in a powder compact, as a function of pressure, height and diameter of the die, powder particle size, etc. For this purpose they devised a very ingenious method. They inserted a thin lead grid into a die and then filled the die with powder. During cold pressing, the lead grid -moved downward. Due to its deformability it followed closely the downward descent of the adjacent powder. The die was then radiographed and, from the deformations of the grid openings measured on the radiographs, the density in the vicinity of each opening was evaluated. Their findings led them to the conclusion that the friction on the side walls of the die is a major controlling factor of the density distribution inside the cold pressed powder compacts. However, it is difficult to conduct tests similar to those of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff in a processing plant laboratory, which usually lacks the necessary expensive radiographic equipment. The purpose of this note is to describe a method which makes it possible to determine the density distribution in green powder compacts with the same accuracy as the lead-grid method but which is far simpler and faster and requires only standard laboratory equipment. Instead of using a lead grid, the hardness at selected points of the sectioned compact is determined. If the relationship between hardness and density is known the density distribution is readily obtained. This relationship is easily found from measuring hardness and densities of thin compacts. In such compacts the density, for all practical purposes, is constant throughout. The method was tested on a Plast nickel powder, grade FlA-A20, kindly supplied by Plast Metals Co. Thin compacts (height to diameter ratio 0.2) were pressed in a single action cylindrica1 die at various pressures. The density of the compacts was determined by weighing and by measuring the height and diameter with a micrometer. Subsequently the Rh hardness was determined. Up to ten readings were taken on each specimen. The difference in hardness readings on each compact was never greater than three corresponding to about 0.1 g per cu cm uncertainty in density. By varying the compaction pressure of the samples, a whole scale of densities was obtained allowing construction of a set of density-hardness calibration curves. To test the method several compacts of different height were pressed under varying pressures. Die walls were always well lubricated. After pressing, the compacts were mounted in bakelite and halved by grinding, and hardness readings taken along the diameters of the specimens. The distance between adjacent indentations was about 2.5 mm. After hardness readings were translated into densities, contour maps of densities of the compacts were prepared. One of them is reproduced in Fig. 1. The areas encompassed by the curves are labeled with numbers representing the density in g per cu cm of those regions. In Fig. 2 the same results are re-plotted to emphasize the radial density changes at various depths. The results thus obtained confirm the findings of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff kentioned previously. They are recapitulated here briefly. 1—The densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the outer circumference at the top and the least dense part at the bottom, at the outer circumference. Figs. 1 and 2 show this clearly. 2—The density near the cylindrical surfaces of the compact decreases uniformly with height from top to bottom. 3—The density variation increases with the height to diameter ratio. The Lenox Avenue Reconstruction Project involved the excavation and replacement of 750 m (2,500 ft) of deteriorated subway invert concrete, 5 to 7 m (15 to20 ft) below water table in very permeable ground. The Replacement work was done over an 8 month period, while maintaining track service through this subway section. The project was dewatered with a single 125 l/s (2,000 gpm) wellpoint system,750 m (2,500 ft) in length, which was installed from inside the active tunnel structure and configured to coexist in the subway tunnel with operating trains as well as the construction activities. A thin diaphragm jet grout wall was utilized on one end of the site to cut off the flow of water across a difficult geological interface that was situated immediately below the tunnel invert. The thin diaphragm jet grout wall permitted the large 116th Street Station area to be dewatered completely with well points from outside of the excavation.

We utilized electronic detonators (EDs) to investigate the effect of high detonator delay accuracy on overbreak, remaining rock damage, and surface smoothness, in comparison with that of long-period delay detonators (0.25 sec interval) PDs. The experiments were conducted in a deep mine, in a test site region composed of very hard granodiorite with a seismic wave velocity of about 6.0 km/see and a uniaxial compressive strength, uniaxial tensile strength, and Young's modulus of 300 MPa, 12 MPa, and 73 GPa, respectively. The blasting design was for a test tunnel excavation 8 m in cross section, with an advance per round of 2.5 m. Five rounds were performed, each with a large-hole cut and perimeter holes in a 0.4-m spacing charged with 20-mm-diameter water gel explosive to obtain low charge concentration. EDs were used in the holes on the perimeter of the right half, and PDs were used in all other holes.

Through the process of Riverbank Filtration (RBF), the Louisville Water Company plans to obtain a higher quality source of water for their B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant (WTP) by means of four collector wells located in the alluvial aquifer along the bank of the Ohio River. The collector wells are connected to a 2,850 L/s (65 mgd) pumping station by a 2,362 m (7,750 ft) long, 3 m (10 ft) finished diameter tunnel located in limestone and shale bedrock, which is approximately 45 m (150 ft) below the surface. High tunnel boring machine (TBM) production rates were achieved in this moderately weak bedrock; most of the tunnel only required support in the crown. An unanticipated water-bearing fault and unanticipated ground behavior proved challenging and required quick thinking to minimize impacts to construction. Tunneling conditions are discussed in detail, together with the methods used for overcoming the groundwater and ground behavior challenges. The tunnel is expected to be completed in April 2009.

Coal mine bumps the violent failures of over-stressed coal', present a safety hazard to miners when mining is conducted in deep, bump prone coal mines. Two different longwall gate entry systems were evaluated in a Southern Appalachian coal mine located in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed under approximately 610 m of overburden which included a massive sandstone member. Both gate entry systems employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The original design employed a 24.4 m square abutment pillar' while the new design employed a 36.6 by 54.9 m' abutment pillar. Rock mechanics instrumentation data analysis and in-mine observations indicated that this increase in abutment pillar size significantly decreased bump potential. The new design in worse case conditions increased effective bearing area 62 pct with only a 9 pct increase in gate entry system width and eliminated face bumps that wer7 experienced with the original gate entry design.

Lonmin RoM ball mills are treating two types of feed ore produced by conventional mining and mechanised mining methods. It was reported that reduction in mill throughput was observed when treating the mechanised mining ore. Detailed grinding surveys were conducted for troubleshooting. Ore samples were collected for breakage characterisation using a JKRBT based on different particle density components. XRD analysis was conducted to investigate the association of minerals with density components. The plant surveys and the breakage characterisation tests all suggested that the two mining methods did not significantly affect either the ore breakage properties or the RoM mill performance. Instead, the mill discharge open area exerted a remarkable influence on mill throughput. The RoM ball mill operated at Lonmin K4 Concentrator has been proven to be a versatile mill that performed stably with variations in feed size distribution and feed ore changes by different mining techniques. The reasons are elucidated by the multi-component breakage characterisation and the plant surveys data.

Visando elucidar o comportamento da carepa terciária durante a laminação de tiras a quente, em um aço produzido como laminado a quente e com rigorosa exigência de qualidade superficial, foi realizada uma parada forçada do laminador, impondo-se, imediatamente, um resfriamento rápido da superfície da tira. Amostras coletadas na região do arco de contato mostraram que a carepa possui espessura na faixa de 10 ?m a 14 ?m na entrada das cadeiras, sendo reduzida para 7 ?m com a deformação, sem ocorrência de ruptura. Tais características indicam que, do ponto de vista do comportamento no trem acabador, a carepa apresenta espessura e plasticidade adequadas para evitar defeitos nos produtos laminados. A carepa foi constituída predominantemente por Fe3O4, óxido plástico na temperatura de laminação. Foi desenvolvido e aplicado um modelo de crescimento da carepa, que forneceu valores de espessura muito próximos dos medidos, se tornando uma ferramenta útil para análise da influência de condições de processo na carepa.

For effective backfilling, a system with the 13 features covered under the section: effective backfill systems, is required. Effective backfilling cannot be done with systems that are badly designed, outdated or overextended. But in cases where the requirements for effective backfilling are overlooked, the shortcomings of such systems may wrongly come to be regarded as limitations to the capabilities of backfilling per se. Mining is currently done to depths of 3500 m, and is to go deeper since the gold-bearing reef extends down to 4000 m and 5000 m below surface. Effective backfilling systems will be required at such depths, and with suitable design this can be achieved. Mining the narrow tabular orebody of a typical South African gold mine is described at the start of this paper, then cycloned backfilling is discussed in general, and its effectiveness (most of the fill placed in South Africa is cycloned backfill or ædeslimed tailingsÆ).

A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; an error analysis is detailed; possible uses are discussed. Of the 38 samples tested, the lowest GRG content was found to be 25% (most below 25 11m, or 600 mesh), and the highest 94% (most above 300 11m, or 50 mesh). The average GRG content was 63%, with a standard deviation of 19%. Error analysis shows the test to be reproducible within 5 to 10%, depending on the size distribution and grade of GRG, and the sample extraction protocol. When using the same primary sample, reproducibility improves, 2 to 5%, depending on the amount of gold coarser than 850 11m (20 mesh) and sample weight. The test has been applied to greenfield project and retrofit applications, to determine the suitability of gravity recovery. For existing circuits, it has been coupled with a model of gravity recovery for optimization studies.

Appropriate management of the ground subsidence induced by coal mining activities is essential. To assess the effectiveness of grout injection for mining subsidence control, time-lapse ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging data were collected before and after grouting. The pregouting subsurface responses were interpreted to have changed after grout injection. The changes were caused by injecting the grout materials (flyash and water) into the delaminated strata and permeable fracture zones. The largest distance of the observed GPR event changes at the right end of the main profile is 132 m away from the injection borehole. Although the GPR images could not easily tell if the image changes were caused by the injected ashes or the water, it does suggest that the injection materials had been pushed at least 130 m away from the injection borehole. This is consistent with the borehole scan monitoring, which confirmed that the grout has travelled more than 90 m from the injection borehole.

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the US Department of Energy. The repository is located at a depth of 655 min the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation. The exhaust air from the facility is independently monitored by the Environmental Evaluation Group to verify compliance with regulatory release limits for radioactive materials. A May 1995 video inspection of the exhaust shaft identified fluid migration into the uppermost 25 m of the shaft. Since then, water has been observed flowing in from cracks in the shaft lining between 16and 25 m below surface level at an estimated rate of between 5 and15 m3/d. This water inflow has not only negatively impacted the equipment in the shaft, associated duct-work and monitoring equipment located at the top of the shaft, but also challenged efforts to verify compliance at the WIPP. This paper provides an analysis of these effects.
