This paper reports the construction of an environmentally-friendly tunnel in sedimentary soft rock near a residential area. The main tunnel, which will be used as the Onmawashi-Koen (Park) Regulating Reservoir, is a large-scale tunnel with a cross sectional area of 254.0 m2 and a lengthof 577.3 m, excavated using such support as shotcrete, rockbolts and steel H-sections. Since the large main tunnel is excavated in sedimentary soft rock, it is necessary to keep the stability of the tunnel face and the crown and to prevent surface settlement. A top heading with a length of 50 m is therefore driven as a pilot tunnel to observe the ground behavior during excavation, and to obtain information on the geological conditions based on which type of support structure is determined with consideration given to the results of field measurements and numerical analyses.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. A localized nonlinear recoverable resource estimate technique has been applied using typical feasibility or new mining drilling data configurations drawn from a massive database from a mined-out area on a hydrothermal gold deposit. The results were then compared with the corresponding 8 m x 5 m grid grade-control data in order to determine the efficiency of the approach and the validity of the recoverable resource estimates for mine planning and financial forecasts.

Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

During the construction of the S.Martin La Porte access adit, 9m in diameter, extreme squeezing conditions occurred while crossing Carboniferous schistose formations, with diametric convergence up to 2m. Back-analysis of monitoring results shows that an acceptable simulation of the observed excavation behaviour can be derived using a combined analytical and numerical approach, with simple elasto-plastic laws but a progressive reduction of residual parameters and a relevant increase of dilatancy.

During the past decade, the size of grin- ding mills has steadily increased. Mills 11 m in diameter with 9 mW motors have been installed with even larger units on the drawing board. The rising costs of energy and labor have spurred interest in improving efficiency while reducing capital investment and operating labor. Autogenous and semiautogenous grinding have experienced renewed interest as efforts to reduce operating and capital costs have increased.

The Mary Kathleen tailings storage facility (TSF) contains 7.1 Mt of uranium mill tailings. This waste repository was rehabilitated in the mid-1980s using a multibarrier dry cover. At the time of mine closure, it was predicted that acid mine drainage (AMD) generation would not eventuate and that uranium, heavy metals and radionuclides would be adsorbed within the tailings and not seep from the TSF into the environment. This study reports on the environmental status of the TSF. Gamma-ray measurements indicate an intact dry cover of the waste repository. However, seepage (~0.5 L s-1) of acid (pH 5.71), saline (0.31 per cent), high conductivity (8.8 mS cm-1), slightly oxygenated (DO 2.6 mg L-1), radioactive waters occurs from the toe of the tailings dam into the former evaporation ponds and local drainage system. Seepage waters are calcium-magnesium-sulfate rich with elevated Fe, Mn, Ni, U and Zn values. Oxygenation of tailings seepages causes the precipitation of Fe and coprecipitation and adsorption of other metals (Pb, U, Y), metalloids (As), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238, Th-227). In contrast, Ba, Ni, Sr, Mn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Na and K as well as Ra nuclides (Ra-226 and Ra-228) remain in solution until pH neutralisation and evaporation lead to their precipitation in efflorescences and sulfate-rich evaporative sediments further downstream. Dry capping of Mary Kathleen uranium mill tailings has resulted in physical containment of the wastes. The dry cover shows no signs of erosion and radiation levels are within acceptable limits. However, the flow rate of surface seepage from the TSF occurs at a much higher rate than predicted. Also, the neutralising potential and adsorption capacity of the tailings and underlying aquifer were overestimated at the time of mine closure. AMD has developed mobilising metals, metalloids, rare earth elements, alkalis, radionuclides and sulfate from the waste repository into surface water seepages.

The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

The size and accessibility of the Minnesota manganiferous iron ore deposits make them attractive as a potential source of erromanganese, which is essential in the production of steel. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting experiments to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from these ores by a three-step process which involves (1) the smelting of the ores in the blast furnaoe to produce a high-phosphorus spiegel; (2) the treatment of the spiegel produced from step 1 in an electric or open-hearth furnace to separate the manganese from the phosphorus and the iron; and 3) the smelting of the high-manganese slag from step 2 to produce forromanganese. The details of the first two steps of the process and the results of tests with the experimental furnaces Lave been given in previous reports.5 The m$ or part of the experimental work on the second step has been conducted in a half-ton open-hearth furnace. Some preliminary tests showed, however, that the electric furnace has some distinct advantages over the open hearth for producing, from high-phosphorus spiegel, a slag containing from 45 to 55 per cent manganese and phosphorus and iron in amounts required for ferro-grade ore. The electric furnace tests described in this paper were made to get more information as to the possibilities of the electric furnace in connection with this problem and to study the fluxing effect of alumina on high-manganese slags. Herty, Conley, and Royer have reported' results of laboratory tests which showed that slags containing from 60 to 75 per cent MnO, from 8 to 10 per cent S102, and small amounts of CaO MgO, and FeO, were sufficiently fluid at 1,450° to 1,550° C. to pour readily if 12 to 14 per cent alumina was present. "The microstructure and corrosion behaviour of titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced duplex stainless steel matrix surface composites synthesized by laser melt injection technique was investigated. The surface melting operation was conducted using a 4.4 kW CW Nd:YAG laser with laser power of 1.5 kW, scanning speed of 0.4 to 1.0 m/min, beam size of 3 mm and argon shield gas flow rate of 4 L/min. The morphologies and microstructures of the coatings examined using field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEGSEM) revealed homogeneous distribution of fine precipitates of TiC in the matrix, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirm no phase change. TiC addition to the steels significantly increased hardness value to about 547 Hv0.1 but slightly decreased the corrosion resistance of the steels in 3.5% NaCl possibly due to the intergranular carbide coating that prevented chromium from forming continuous passive oxide layers.IntroductionComposite materials evolve from the idea of combining two basically dissimilar materials with different physical and mechanical properties to arrive at a product whose final properties are superior to those of the individual components [1]. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are receiving much attention and are the focus of intense research and development worldwide for aerospace, automotive and other applications because of their excellent combination of ductility and toughness of the metallic matrix with high hardness and strength of carbides reinforced in the matrix [2]. Surface modification techniques such as laser, thermal spray, plasma spray, chemical vapour deposition have been use to fabricate MMCs. Laser melt injection (LMI) is a surface modification technique known since the 1980s [3] has been used to improve surface properties of metallic alloys such as aluminium, titanium and steels [4-6]. It involves the lateral injection of carbides, ceramics and cermets blown by a gas stream into a liquid metallic pool, created by laser irradiation of the top surface of the base material."

"The effect of two refining slags (A: 1.0–1.8 CaO/Al2O3 ratio, 11–20 wt% SiO2; and B: 1.0–1.2 CaO/SiO2 ratio, 25–35 wt% Al2O3) on the inclusion morphology of a carbon structural steel (Q235B) was studied by controlling the balance between the steel and the refining slag at 1600ºC in a Si–Mo resistance laboratory furnace. The results showed that most of the inclusions in the molten steel balanced with slag A were formed by a lowmelting CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system with a total oxygen content (T[O]) being fixed at 6–13 ppm. The inclusions in liquid steel balanced with the slag B were mostly formed by the CaO–MnO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, with T[O] controlled to 19–26 ppm. The overall size of the inclusions under balance conditions was higher in the steel reacted with the slag B than that reacted with slag A, with the latter showing more inclusions smaller than 3 um. In order to generate a large number of spherical CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 inclusions smaller than 3 ??m while decreasing the T[O] in the resulting steel, the composition of slag A should be used. This composition allowed improving the cleanliness of the slab, and is also advantageous for the castability of the molten steel. IntroductionThe sample used in this study was a typical carbon steel manufactured by CQ Steel. The galvanized, tinned, and plastic composite steel plates made of the original plates are used extensively for decorative panels, general dust pipes, drums, instrument cases, switchboxes, and train cars, among other uses. The target control composition is shown in Table I. The S and P contents are usually fixed during production below 0.020 and 0.025 wt%, respectively, with the aim of reducing longitudinal cracks on the slab surface."

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

Since commencement of underground production in March 2006 the Kencana K1 orebody has delivered over 0.9 Mt of ore containing 1.18 Moz Au until April 2009. The Kencana deposits are part of the Gosowong goldfield located on the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia. The district has produced over 2.3 Moz since mining commenced in 1999 with the first two deposits extracted by open pit methods. The K1 deposit is technically challenging being a vein style deposit with poor to very poor ground conditions and a relatively low overall dip of around 45 degrees to mine grid east. It is mined under geological control by underhand cut and fill methods utilising cemented paste backfill aiming for 100 per cent extraction. With these conditions the operation was mine limited in the initial two years of production resulting in low stockpile levels for mill feed blending and hand-to-mouth mine to mill production. Mill feed rates have increased from 30 t/h to 55 t/h over this period following business improvement projects while mine production has escalated to match this increase as deeper levels of the deposit are accessed. The operation has now become mill limited. Monthly mill gold production from Kencana has ranged up to 50 000 oz with head grades ranging between 8 g/t and 122 g/t Au on a daily basis. As individual grade control assays can extend into the per cent Au range there are challenges in sampling, modelling, mining, blending and milling the Kencana orebody. At the time of commencement of ore driving in K1 the national geology team had little prior experience in underground mining and systems were in early development. The variances in feed grade and tonnages have been reduced with time as the operation evolves and business improvement initiatives are undertaken to smooth peaks and troughs in ore supply. Two such initiatives in the geology department have added over US$20 M of additional revenue per annum.

"Zinc electrowinning process is sensitive to the presence of metallic impurities such as lead ions that could substantially and negatively affect the power consumption and surface morphology. Effect of various concentrations of manganese ions and traces of lead ions up to 2.5 mg L-1 added to the electrolyte during electrowinning have been investigated by electrochemical polarization techniques such as galvanostatic, cyclic voltammetry and potentiodynamic. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to examine the surface morphology and crystallographic orientation, respectively. Microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometry has been used to determine the lead content in the deposit and in the electrolyte after electrodeposition. It was found that lead ions added to the zinc electrolyte led to the increase of cathodic overpotential and current efficiencies of zinc deposit. However, addition of Mn2+ into the zinc electrolyte resulted in the decrease of cathodic potential and current efficiency of zinc deposit. It can be stated as example that galvanostatic polarisation at 40?C and 52.5 mA cm-2 in presence of lead up to 0.1-0.2 mg L-1 in the electrolyte and 8-12 g L-1 Mn could be better considered as practical working parameters for electrowinning process.INTRODUCTIONApproximately 85% of the global production of zinc metal is produced by electrolytic process (Sinclair, 2005). The main goal of the zinc plant is to obtain pure zinc deposits with high current efficiencies. Smooth and pure deposits with high current efficiency (CE) are always obtained from pure electrolytes (Alfantazi & Dreisinger, 2001). The presence of metallic impurities in the zinc sulphate electrolyte is a major problem for the zinc electrowinning industry, since decreases in current efficiency, changes in deposit morphology and cathodic polarization are observed for electrolytes containing small concentrations of impurities (Ault & Frazer, 1988; Muresan, Maurin, Oniciu & Gaga, 1996). Low level concentrations as parts per million of these impurities are reported to influence negatively the zinc electrodeposition (Beshore, Flori, Schade & O'Keefe, 1987)."
