THE first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. O. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Arts for 1867, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought down to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends. Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

"Up-grading silicon feedstock by removing B and metal impurities can improve process efficiency and lower production cost in metallurgical processing for solar cells production. Hydrometallurgical study has been carried out in laboratory through alternative treatments of the metallurgical grade (MG) silicon (-200 mesh) by using hydrogen peroxide, hydrofluoric acid (4 mol/L) and NH4Cl-NH4 F (30:5) solution. The experiments were usually performed under mechanical agitation at 70 ? for 5 h. ICP-AES analysis showed that B content in MG silicon after the hydrometallurgical treatment has reduced by 92.4 %, and Fe, Al, and Ca contents by 98.8 %, 98.0 % and 81 %, respectively. Kinetics of these processes was also studied for better understanding of the effects of silicon powder size, acid concentration, leaching and oxidizing time on the processing chemistry.IntroductionAs one of the most clean and promising new energy, solar energy is used more and more in many countries all over the world, especially in United States, Japan and European Union. Most of industrialized states have made their national photovoltaic plans, which have stimulated further increase in use of solar energy. Photovoltaic Industry is at a high growth rate about 30 % [1-2]. For silicon solar cells to remain the mainstay for the photovoltaic industry it is necessary to develop a low-cost solar grade silicon feedstock [3]. At the same time, the availability of the currently M-G silicon from the semiconductor industries becomes limited [4]. With the advantages of low cost and low energy consumption, metallurgical routes to product solar–grade silicon get more attention [5]. These routes mainly include pickling, slagging, vacuum processing and directional solidification, etc [6]. Among them the most important processing step is the directional solidification, but it still can not satisfy the industrial demand for removing B. Removing B from Si remains as one of the most difficult and important processes in making M-G silicon [7]."

During the year of 1972 ASARCO's Silver Bell embarked upon a project that would test a modified grinding circuit using direct digital compute against the performance of its other five grinding lines, implementation and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pitts, et al. The main purpose of the present paper will be to describe major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines and their solutions. Also included will be a discussion of changes made in operating philosophy and methods used since that report was written. Description The Silver Bell concentrator is a 10,436 tonne/day copper sulfide plant supplied by ore from two separate open pits approximately 4 km. apart. As well as receiving ore from these two main pits, ore is received from several exten¬sions of both pits. The ore bodies are variable in rock type and the extensions have increased this variability. Grinding is carried out by six primary, single-stage, 3.20M x 3.66M Allis Chalmers grate discharge ball mills in closed circuit with four Krebs D20B cyclones (Fig. 1). Each of these grinding circuits is controlled by four independent but interactive control elements. These control elements are the fresh ore feed, the water added to the feed end of the mill, the water added to the ball mill discharge sump, and the cyclone feed pump speed. At the present time, instrumentation for measuring primary process variables consists of Merrick weightometers for fresh ore feed, orifice plates coupled with differential pressure transmitters (dp's) for incoming water measurements, back-pressure diaphragm coupled with a dp for estimating ball mill discharge sump level, a magnetic flowmeter for determining cyclone feed velocity and a nuclear density gauge for measuring cyclone feed density. All measuring instruments develop electrical signals that are measured as 2-10 V DC "inputs o the computer interface.

"This paper describes the operation of a rope haulage used as the main system of transportation in an underground coal mine. Prince Colliery, which is operated by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, has been in operation for 23 years and produces 1.2 million tonnes of coal annually. The mine extends a distance of 8000 metres under the Atlantic Ocean. All personnel and supplies are transported by means of an endless rope haulage system consisting of a train of rail cars that are operated by an electric engine on surface. The wire rope is 15 km long and weighs 63 tonnes. The system is believed to be the longest of its type used in an underground coal mine. The design of the system, safety features of the haulage, and problems encountered during the design and construction are described. IntroductionCoal has been mined commercially in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia since the 1800s. Several coal seams that are part of the Sydney coal fields, dip toward the north and northeast out under the Atlantic Ocean at angles between -4 and -15 degrees. Coal has been economically mined at depth in excess of 1200 m and more than 11 km from the coastline.Traditionally, single and double drum hoists have been used to haul the coal to the surface and also for transporting the workers and the materials required for mining up to 8 km. With the introduction of mechanized mining methods in the late 1960s, conveyor belts began to replace rope hoists for coal transportation. Improvements in hoisting system design also allowed for drums that could wind up to 6100 m of 32 mm wire rope in 15 layers.These hoists are commonly referred to as “drop hoists” because they take advantage of the gradient of the slope to assist in allowing the mine car train to reach the end of travel. The cars travel on steel rails and the rope is guided by rollers to reduce friction in the system."

La incidencia de silicosis en algunos asientos mineros, conlleva la necesidad de un estudio evaluativo del departamento de Higiene industrial sobre aquellos yacimientos situados a 4000 m.sn.m, para determinar las condiciones del medio ambiente y estado de salud de sus 200 trabajadores. Por tal motivo, el presente trabajo señala el proceso de adquisición sobre la enfermedad durante la estadía del trabajador en la mina, y su posterior evolución, pese a las medidas preventivas. Las condiciones ambientales para el desarrollo de la silicosis son el terreno cuarcífero y los lugares de ventilación ventilación deficiente, donde el término medio de partículas de polvo encontradas fue de 0.7 a 1.15, incidiendo particularmente en el operador de lampa. Para ello, se recomendaron medidas preventivas como la adecuada ventilación de los frontones, la omisión inicial de la perforación en seco, el uso de respiradores adecuados para las trabajadores y el empleo de un mejor equipo para la ventilación de los stops. Sin embargo, los resultados obtenidos del proceso, no ofrecieron mejoras sobre el avance de la enfermedad, situándola en un primer estadío con 7.0% en comparación con otras enfermedades. Después de un periodo de 7 años, el departamento de Higiene industrial, nuevamente reevalúa este estudio, encontrando resultados similares con los anteriores, sin reparar en las recomendaciones sostenidas. Así, de los 200 trabajadores examinados, se conoce el estado actual de 103, de los cuales 97 trabajadores tienen silicosis sin determinar aún su estado de su evolución. Luego, en 1956 se diagnosticó que el 27.3% de trabajadores silicosos, evidenciaba un porcentaje considerable en el primer estadio y una dismimución en el estado de sílico-tuberculosis. Por consecuencia, se necesita mejorar no solo las condiciones del ambiente del trabajador, sino eliminar las jornadas laborales de 12 horas de trabajo en subsuelo. Así como la evaluación periódica, integral, radiográfica del estado del trabajador por medio de un personal médico altamente capacitado.

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). Using sheet piles and pipe piles for permanent earth retaining is one of the most economical methods for constructing basement walls since they can also work as temporary shoring during construction. A major mixed-use redevelopment project in the UK, encompassing two to three large city blocks, utilized both sheet and pipe pile walls for a two-level subterranean parking structure. The 290m (950ft) x 100m (330ft) basement’s steel walls were designed to temporarily support excavation during construction and eventually to become a load carrying permanent structure in order to expedite the construction process and to achieve cost reduction. Two types of press-in piling machines, one for sheet piles and the other for pipe piles, were used for the job because of their abilities to press in sheet and pipe piles within tight tolerances for finished walls, for difficult installation conditions with very hard soil, and for its very low noise and practically zero-vibration operation; an essential factor for the job in close proximity to other businesses and residents. BACKGROUND Steel sheet pile and pipe piles have been used for many purposes including earth retaining. They are produced at steel mills and spirally welded at a fabrication yard to their corresponding specifications under strict quality control measures. Therefore, they can form highly reliable walls to its design capacity with proper installations. Their advantages as underground walls are:  They can form a high level of water cut-off function with their interlocks sealed by welding or with hydrophilic materials. See Figure 1 for a few examples for a sheet pile application.  They can carry vertical loading in addition to horizontal load and bending moment.  They can be a self-standing and temporary/permanent wall with flexible design and construction processes; bottom-up, top-down or hybrid sequences can be chosen per the project’s needs.  They can form a thinner wall than other wall types, creating larger inner space. See Figure 2.

Teleoperation is one method by which an operator can remotely control and monitor a vehicle. The operator monitors the status and progress of the remote vehicle by watching the video transmitted from one or more cameras which are mounted on the vehicle. In the case of an LHD, it will be fitted with three cameras. For a twin-boom Jumbo, four cameras are mounted on the drill, three of which will have remote pan, tilt, 15x zoom, focus and lens cleaning controls. The advantage of teleoperation is that an operator can stand in the drive and send the remote vehicle around a corner, completely out of sight and still clearly see what is happening. This means that an LHD returns with a full bucket and a Jumbo can be operated from a safe distance. Standing in the drive teleoperating vehicles, exposes the operator to passing traffic including the remote vehicle. There are two solutions to this problem. One is to equip the operator with a Nautilus æBuddyÆ jacket which will help to protect them from all vehicles. The other is to move the operator into a safe room or area, away from the fumes, the noise and the traffic. In this comfortable, less stressful environment, the operator will be more productive and less likely to accidentally damage the vehicle. The operatorÆs æsafeÆ room does not have to be a formal control room, it can be any area which has AC or DC power available and is large enough to contain a chair and a 1.5 m x 0.75 m table. The æsafeÆ room can be on the surface or underground, it does not matter to the operation of the Nautilus Equipment. If the LHDÆs, trucks, locomotives, etc are automatically guided from origin to destination, the operator is free to operate several vehicles at a time, performing only those tasks which are too difficult for a computer to do by itself.

During the time I was in charge of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:&apos; "The iron ores at Tayeh * * * * lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between hornblende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende."&apos; These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General DescriptLon of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being connected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 66 li (18.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

Alluvial mining even of shallow deposits is often economically a marginal proposition and causes significant disruption of the land surface through the need for large scale excavation. In-situ leaching using chlorine-based solutions eliminates the need for excavation, the disruption of surface activities, and may greatly reduce processing costs and improve recovery especially of fine gold. A spreadsheet model has been developed to design and analyse the economics of in-situ leaching of alluvial deposits. In-situ leaching of shallow deposits may be achieved in a number of ways including solution infiltration via perimeter ditches or the use of injection and production wells. In most instances deeper alluvials may only be processed using well systems. Two deposits are analysed in this paper. The first consists of one metre of payable wash beneath one metre of overburden. Some thirty fields per year are treated processing 450 000 BCM per year at a cut-off grade of around $4/tonne ($8/rn3 or the gold value equivalent of 0.26 gh or 0.52 g/m3). The principal costs are well drilling and labour. Sensitivity analysis indicates that doubling the throughput halves the cost. The economics of the project are relatively insensitive to reagent costs and consumptions, and halving the recovery doubles the cut-off grade. Shallow deposits treated using the infiltration ditch system may be marginally cheaper and more conveniently managed although this depends on the relative cost of digging the perimeter ditches. In a second example, deep leads with one metre of wash beneath 30 metres of overburden necessitate significant drilling and feature reduced throughputs as a consequence. In the example chosen 30 fields a year are processed for an annual throughput of 65 000 tonnes costed at around $20/tonne (1.4 g/t Au equivalent, $40 /m3). Sensitivity analysis indicates that throughput, and drilling cost per metre are not important but there is a high sensitivity to recovery and to the depth to payable wash.

INTRODUCTION Mount Isa mine is a major producer of both copper and lead-zinc- silver ores. During the 1975/76 year, 4.3 million tonnes of copper ore were extracted at an average grade of 3.4%, and 2.4 million tonnes of lead-zinc-silver ore at average grades of 7.0%, 6.7% and 173 grams per tonnes respectively. Systematic lead-zinc mining has continued for just over 45 years and copper mining for just over 30 years. Virtually all mining is underground. The composite and somewhat schematic longitudinal section of Figure 1 shows the overall distribution of ore at the Mount Isa mine. The mine can be roughly divided into two parts about a central shaft complex: to the north there is predominantly lead-zinc ore and to the south there is copper ore. Underground operations are serviced by three shafts in the central shaft complex (P61, R62 andU62) and another to the south in the copper mining area (X41). Mining is spread over a total strike length of 2.9 km and extends to a depth of 960 m. Currently, lead-zinc ore is being extracted between 15 and 11 levels and is hauled to the central ore-hoisting shaft on 13 and 15 levels. Copper ore is being extracted between19 and 13 levels and is hauled to the central shafts on 19 level. The principal lead-zinc mining methods used now, as they have been over the last ten years, are sublevel open stoping and cut-and- fill stoping, with about equal tonnages of ore from each (Figure 2). Since about 1970, there have been several interesting developments in lead-zinc mining methods and procedures, principally: • the development of an effective method for the recovery of pillars between open stopes and • the evolution of safer and more productive cut-and- fill methods. What would be the, effect on the formation of sulfates of an increased water vapor content in the roasting gases? CHARLES H. FULTON.-I cannot answer that from our experience. The question of the formation of sulfate in the roasting of zinc is mainly one of temperature and the concentration of S02 and S03 in the gases. We found we could roast almost completely to sulfate if the concentration was kept at the proper point. We, however, did not care to do this because we wished to make a 5 to 6 per cent. S02 gas for sulfuric-acid work. The sulfating of the zinc oxide in the proper concentration of gases goes on very rapidly. Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

IT is well known that the martensite reaction can be induced to occur isothermally above the M, temperature by plastic deformation of an alloy in its austenitic state, and also that as the test temperature is increased above the M. temperature, plastic deformation under a given set of conditions merely causes additional slip with a corresponding tendency toward the formation of less martensite per unit of strain. Thus it appears that a maximum temperature exists above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. This temperature is commonly designated as the equilibrium temperature Te. Attempts to determine experimentally the equilibrium temperature have indicated that a critical temperature is observed, under a given set of conditions, above which martensite cannot be formed isothermally by plastic deformation. But the observation of a "so called" critical temperature, Te, should not be confused with the equilibrium temperature, Te. In order to clarify this anomaly, true stress-strain curves were obtained for a series of type 304 stainless steel specimens (manufacturer&apos;s analysis, 0.08 pct C, 18 to 20 pct Cr, 8 to 10 pct Ni, balance Fe) over the temperature range 67" to 300°K.&apos; Since martensite is magnetic, a quantitative measure of the amount of martensite that was produced by plastic deformation was obtained by determining the magnetic permeability as a function of strain. The results of these tests are given in Fig. 1. They appear to indicate that a plastic critical point does exist at about 240°K for the stainless steel under investigation here. But that 240 °K is not the equilibrium temperature nor even a true plastic critical temperature can be seen from Fig. 2 wherein the permeability of the same material is shown to increase with cold rolling at 293 OK. Consequently the observation of a "so called" plastic critical temperature is dependent on the mode of deformation and has no theoretical significance.
