So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. During 1982 and 1983, it became increasingly clear that North River No. 1 Mine would have to buy a set of replacement longwall shields. Despite extensive efforts to make improvements, the shields that were in place at that time were incapable of holding the roof. North River Energy had limited experience in specifying and acquiring longwall roof supports, but a great deal of experience with our conditions and needs. We there- fore compiled a shield evaluation method that uniquely responded to our situation. The resulting system emphasized teamwork among operating, maintenance and engineering personnel. The charge from management was threefold: select shields to support maximum expected loads, optimize face operations, and pay attention to detail. Final selection was made objectively, based on all available information. We chose a 5516 KN (620 tons) support with a minimum yield load density of 760 KN/m2 (7.9 tons/ft2). This paper reviews our process of specification, design, prototype testing, and fabrication, and offers some relevant suggestions.

Fwe 3 m (10 ft) diameter Microcel™ flotation columns were installed at Clinchfield Coal Company's Middle Fork preparation facility in order to reduce product ash and increase recovery and plant capacity. The Middle Fork facility is utilized for the recovery of fine coal from a feed stream that consists primarily of 1 .5 mm x 0 material. The columns replaced conventional flotation cells for the treatment of the minus 150 pm fraction while spirals are used to upgrade the plus 150 pm material in the plant feed. The addition of the column flotation circuit resulted in an increase in plant capacity in excess of 20 percent while reducing the flotation product ash content by approximately 7 percentage points. Flotation circuit combustible recovery was increased by 17 percentage points. This paper discusses circuit design, commissioning, and sparging system design. Circuit instrumentation, level control, reagent system control, performance comparisons with conventional flotation, and general operating procedures are also discussed.

Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

A ventilation analytical system adapting nodal pressure method using skyline modified Choleski's decomposition scheme for network-flow analysis and a new practical system to estimate various thermal air conditions has been developed. The quasi-linear equations for solving steady-state network airflow have been described using the connective function in general forms. The skyline modified decomposition scheme has an advantage on rapid convergence and the sake of computer memory space com- pared with other schemes. The key part of the analysis for climatic conditions through network airways is how to estimate the temperature of the airway rock-surface with partly or full wet condition. A practical and simple solution without any iterative calculations for its estimation has been proposed. This new solution is applicable to practical ranges of airflow temperature, humidity, rock thermal properties and wetness. The present analytical sys- tem have been successfully applied to a ventilation simulator named "M1VENA"developed by authors.

As usually occurs in technological development, heap leaching knowledge has been built upon two parallel lanes, theory developed on fundamentals but relatively far from industrial applications, and operational know-how generated from empirical trial and error. As a contribution to close the gap between the above-mentioned lanes, the De Re Metallica process consulting group has been developing and applying fundamentalsbased modeling tools for industrial process design and process optimization of existing plants over the last ten years. As result, a library of models is now available with application to the whole production chain from blasting to electro winning. The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, de¬tect hazardous ground conditions and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep, >1,220-m (>4,000¬ft), underground pillars. If high¬stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or they can be avoided High-stress ar¬eas can be monitored with succes¬sive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where de¬velopment can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost¬effective, efficient and noninvasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as moni¬tor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer envi¬ronment.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

The application of a magnetic field was shown to be effective in controlling iron losses in a pilot-scale cationic silica fIotation in the processing of magnetic taconite concentrates. The design of a magnetic field distribution device and batch flotation test results using a 1.42-m3 (50 cu ft) WEMCO flotation cell are reported. Major losses of iron units in froth products were in the -25-µm (-500-mesh) fraction, and the application of a magnetic field decreased the flotation of fine magnetite, thereby improving the selectivity of separation. The "as-received" sample was sufficiently magnetized, and no further benefit was gained by the magnetizing treatment. The selectivity was somewhat adversely affected by demagnetizing the sample, though its effect was minimal due to the magnetic field. The device is simple in construction, low cost and may be readily installed in existing equipment. Cyprus Sierrita produces copper and molybdenum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, AZ. Both pits were started in the late 1960s and are more than 460 m (1500 ft) deep. Sierrita has used a Caterpillar 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase safety and profits at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, the 992C had produced additional profits of more than $1.5 million. Safety and Geotechnical The safety of Cyprus personnel and equipment is always of prime concern. For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

In the present work, dielectric spectroscopy experiments were conducted on bentonite samples collected from Milos Island, in order to study their electrokinetic behavior in correlation with water content and mild heat treatment. Low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy has proved to be a power tool in the study of the electrical behavior of clay-water systems, because polarization and relaxation processes typically affect response at frequencies below 100 kHz. Therefore, dielectric and conductivity measurements in the frequency range of 10mHz to 1MHz were carried out by means of a high-resolution broadband spectrometer on bentonite samples, at various levels of hydration. The evolution of dielectric response was also examined after annealing of the samples. Experimental data were computer fitted with the empirical Havrilliak?Negami dielectric relaxation function on which a conductivity term was superimposed. The evaluated parameters of the fitting function are shown to be strongly affected by the water content of the measured samples.

Lieut. Louis J. Brunel, now in France, was commissioned on July 27, 1917, as Second Lieutenant in the Engineers Reserve Corps, assigned to the 7th U. S. Engineers, Dec. 10, 1917, and has been with the American E. F. since Mar. 26, 1918. He was assigned to the staff of the General commanding the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, as Engineer Officer, on Aug. 6, 1918. E. Ross Housholder writes that "the record for pontoon bridge building was broken Sept. 25, 1918, by Section A, Co. 4, 5th Engineer Officers' Training School, at Camp Humphreys, Va., of which I am a member. The time was 15 min. 11 3/5 seconds. We then proceeded to break the record for dismantling in 9 min. 57 1/5 seconds. The length of the bridge section was 200 ft. The post band was sent out to meet us, and we feel proud of this record. I have met quite a few A. I. M. E.
