Many transport tunnels show distress after few decades of construction. Owing to exorbitant cost of replacement, rehabilitation of tunnels has become inevitable and rapidly gaining attention/significance worldwide. This paper discusses the detailed planning and design of remedial measures for repairs and rehabilitation of the twin tube highway tunnel in India, at an elevation of 2200 m constructed approximately 38 years ago. The tunnel length is 2547 m having 30 m2 cross-sectional area of each tube. The tunnel is lined in stretches, totalling 60 per cent lined and the remaining portions are unlined. The tunnel has developed acute problems of rock falls, water leakage, distressed pavement and icicle formation resulting in slow movement of vehicular traffic which has also increased. Suffocation inside the tunnel caused deaths due to inadequate natural ventilation, hence artificial ventilation was deemed necessary and was provided in the restricted 28.5 m2 cross-sectional area of tunnel. The paper would be useful for planners, designers and construction engineers for setting future trends.

Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required about 3 Mm2 (32.3 million sq ft) of fill over an area of about 600,000 m2 (6.5 million sq ft) in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40 m (130 ft). Earthwork construction was completed in about six months using mine waste, placed in 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) lifts with mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10 m (33 ft). This was done to develop a mat for additional resistance to possible differential settlements due to the modest density of the fill and dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 2-mm (80-mil) high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner was used below the leach pads. This was protected from the loading and unloading equipment by bedding and cover systems. It consisted of screened sand, gravel and silt as the bedding and cover layers and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low-grade ore.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

Tin in ores containing 0&#183;025 to 1&#183;5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0&#183;01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0&#183;02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. In a recognized procedure, a sample of ore is mixed with up to 15 g of sodium peroxide in an iron crucible and swirled over the full heat of a Meker burner for 7 min. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. "INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. WHEN the A.I.M.E. was formed 75 years ago the bituminous coal industry was in its swaddling clothes, although it had been operating for more than a century and coal was being mined in every state now producing it, and its output had long passed that of anthracite. In 18/1, the value of bituminous coal was about seventy per cent of the value of all metals produced and more than one fifth of the value of all products of mines, both metallic and nonmetallic.[1a] While many of the operating mines then shipped by rail, most of the development was along waterways, although the canal era of transportation was nearly at its end. Coal mining is a heavy industry and one of the best measures of its progress is its output throughout the period. Fig. 1 shows this graphically from 1800 to 1945. From 1870 to 1910, the production-which is very nearly the consumption-almost doubled every decade, a most amazing growth. In 1918, in World War I, a peak was reached and a decline began, which ended in 1932. A gradual recovery then started, interrupted in 1938 but culminating in the record output of 1944, when, owing to World War II, a tonnage of 619,576,000 was produced. It is evident that the forces leading to the continuous increase ending in 1918 have spent themselves and that only unusual conditions will require so large a production again. This paper describes the oil engihe plant owned and operated by Gold Mines .of Kalgoorlie Limited, and gives some details of installation, operational, and maintenance experiences which have arisen during the years of service, the last 5 years of which have been under the writer&apos;s control. Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 alternator units have run 50,276, 48,006, 49,677 and 25,930 hours respectively, and much knowledge has been obtained of their performances and faults. During the war years, it has not been easy to obtain spare parts; this, coupled with the loss of No. 4: alternator unit to the Commonwealth Government, made operation and maintenance a very difficult problem.All engines are of the enclosed vertical, single acting, 4-stroke cycle, airless injection type.The electrical power plant originally consisted of four 6-cylinder Belliss &amp; Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to Bruce Peebles alternators, running at 375 r.p.m., and generating 3-phase electric power at 3,300 volts, 50 cycles.No. 1 unit, installed in 1936, is a 6-cylinder 450 b.h.p. standard 12A Belliss &amp; Morcom heavy oil engine, direct coupled to 280 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternator. The remaining three units are 6-cylinder, 660 b.h.p., lSA oil cooled piston type Belliss &amp; Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to 410 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternators, making a total capacity of 1,510 kw.No. 4&quot;alternator. unit, an 18A Bellis.&amp; Morcom set, was taken over by the Commonwealth Government in June 1943.

NlCHOLAS, Melbourne, Australia (communication to the Secretary) : * Professor Young deals with quite a variety of machines and methods, but, strangely enough, makes no mention of the work done by me, although he concludes with the remark that the " thin-cake continuous filters are a decided improvement over the thick-cake filters." As those interested in slime-treatment may consider that I did nothing more than to patent a process, I submit Fig. 1, showing the working-drawings of a machine, made, tested, and proved to work satisfactorily by me early in 1905. This time is prior to any work done in slime-filtration with rotating filters by E. L. Oliver or others. I maintain that a number of appliances now in use for slime-filtration infringe my patents. And after most exhaustive inquiry, I know of no machine or process, prior to my description in 1899,1 that embodied getting rid of the residues by holding them on the cloth with the vacuum, and then discharging them with back-pressure, so as to form a cycle of the operation, the result being continuous treatment. Geophysical prospecting was first recognized in Australia as an important aid to mining enterprises in 1927, when, on the suggestion of Sir Herbert Gepp, the &quot;Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey&quot; was organized. The function of this survey was to carry out investigations on the applicability and efficacy of the most important geophysical methods under Australian conditions. The survey was formed under the joint auspices of the British Empire Marketing Board and Australian Commonwealth Government, and the investigations were carried out in Australia under the leadership of Mr. A. Broughton Edge, B.Sc., A.R.S.M., F.G.S., M.Inst.M.M., during the years 1928 and 1929. A description of the work performed, the apparatus used, the principles of the methods, and the results and conclusions of the survey are included in a report published by the Cambridge University Press in 1931.In 1932 Sir Herbert Gepp became interested in some gold mines in Eastern Victoria, in the Cassilis and Bethanga districts, and realizing that the lodes in these areas would be favorabIe for a geophysical examination, he arranged for a series of tests to be carried out. Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

This paper presents the design concept using floating piles to support 2500Ton oil storage tanks on a very soft alluvial clayey soil of about 40m thick in Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia. The floating piles of various penetration lengths were designed to support seven numbers of such storage tanks seating on a 20m diameter and 500mm thick reinforced concrete (RC) circular raft. The pile points have been strategically located at the RC raft. Varying pile penetration lengths have been designed to minimize the angular distortion of the thin RC raft and the out-of-plane deflection at the tank edge. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed at different levels inside the ø350mm prestressed reinforced concrete piles to measure the load transfer profile during the static load tests and water-loading test. The installation and interpretation of the instrumentation are described and discussed. Boreholes, in-situ tests like piezocones, vane shear tests and standard penetration tests, and laboratory testing were carried out to obtain geotechnical parameters for the pile designs. Static load tests were also carried out on the spun piles of varying lengths of 24m, 30m and 36m respectively. It has been demonstrated that the floating pile system can be a cost effective design to support heavy structures on very soft compressible deposits with satisfactory performance. Finally, the design concept validated with the results of instrumentation is discussed.

The cross-measure borehole technique has been shown by the Bureau of Mines to be an effective method of controlling methane liberated by fracturing the roof strata in longwall gobs where overburden is less than 750 ft (229 m). Boreholes are drilled into roof strata before mining operations affect the roof strata. Longwall mining fractures the roof strata and releases methane from source beds. Surface exhausters or vacuum pumps are used to draw the gas to the surface through an underground pipeline and vertical exhaust hole. The captured methane is thus prevented from entering the mine&apos;s ventilation system. About 71 pct of the methane produced by longwall mining in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed was captured by the cross-measure boreholes. Borehole spacing is an important factor affecting the performance of the technique. Interference tests and measurements of methane flows in return air indicate borehole spacing in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed should be limited to about 200 ft (61 m) except on the first 600 ft (183 m) of the longwall, where spacing should be reduced to about 100 ft (30 m) to capture the large quantities of methane released when the first large roof fall occurs. Comparisons between measured and calculated gas pressure differentials on boreholes indicate borehole length can be reduced from 280 to 140 ft (85 to 43 m), which reduces drilling costs significantly. Additional experimentation is necessary to verify the calculations.

GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The Escalante silver deposit located in southwestern Utah is an epithermal vein system consisting of a hanging wall and footwall vein, straight along strike and dipping about 1.2 rad (70°). The veins consist of banded quartz and calcite fissure fillings between volcanic wall rock that are silicified for some distance outward from the vein. The walls of the veins are sharp and the silver values are irratically distributed through the various bands within the vein. Only very low grade values are to be found in the wall rock on either side. The portion of the veins above the water table have been somewhat leached, with some secondary enrichment below. The mineralogical zonation is variable due to a fluctuating water table through geologic time. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT AND COMPOSITE ASSAYS Sample data for the deposit was obtained from over 50 diamond drill holes, from channel samples cut at intervals across a drift, and from scattered surface trenches along the out- crop of the hanging wall vein. Fig. 13-1 is a surface plan map showing the vein outcrop and some diamond drill locations. Two cross sections through the vein are shown in Figs. 1 3-2 and 13-3. Nearly all of the diamond drill core of vein material was assayed in 0.3-m (I-ft) lengths, from which weighted composite assays were manually calculated for the horizontal thickness of the vein. SURFACE depletion can be a significant source of error in the use of the effusion method for determining the thermodynamic properties of alloys, particularly in the case of solid alloys.&apos; However, as yet this problem has not been treated quantitatively by experimentalists in the field.1-3 The method necessitates diffusive transport of material out of the source alloy to obtain a relevant measurement. The general character of the system is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusive flux (nD) at the alloy surface is equal to the effusive flux (nE): where D is the diffusion coefficient of the diffusing substance, C is its concentration, X is the distance from the surface into the source alloy, p is the density of the alloy, and AS is the actual available surface of the alloy. The concentration of the diffusing substance at the surface is CS, and Here fE is the Clausing factor, AE is the area (sq cm) of the orifice, y is the activity coefficient of the substance in the alloy, PO is the vapor pressure (Torr) of the pure substance, M is the molecular weight of the effusing species, and T is the absolute temperature. The differential equation for diffusive transport in the source alloy is Fick&apos;s second law. Its solution is dependent on the geometry of the source alloy. Two boundary conditions must be established to obtain the proper solution, the first being Eq. [1], or its equivalent. The solutions for several important forms of the source alloy are considered below.

Conventionally, roadways in South African collieries are 6 to 7 m wide. This dimension is chosen so as to allow maneuvrability of appropriate mine machinery and equipment, to meet production requirements and to ensure roof stability. Over the last two decades, a great deal of research effort has been expended to understand the behaviour of roadways in different strata within this width range. The results have improved the understanding of the strata behaviour to such an extent that 6 m wide roadways are developed with a high degree of confidence. With the advancement of technology and the quest to mine at a lower cost, some mines in South Africa have started considering the benefits of other types of mine machinery that will require much wider roadways to ensure optimum productivity. The roadways required will have to be about 10 - 14 m wide. The challenge confronting these coal mining companies is the potential instability that might be associated with such wide roadways. This dilemma is aggravated by the fact that, apart from theory, nothing is known about the expected behaviour of such wide roadways. This led to experimentation at a selected site in a South African coal mine where 10 m and 14 m wide roadways were developed and monitored. This paper highlights the experimental procedure adopted, discusses the results obtained, compares the prediction of elastic theory to reality and set the precedence towards understanding the behaviour of wider roadways in South Africa.

A. L. BLOMFIELD, ? Colorado Springs, Colo. (written discussion?).¬I congratulate the author on bringing out a paper of real service to the profession. His contention of uniform size in balls is borne out by my own experience; in coarse crushing at the Golden Cycle in 6 by 6-ft. (1.8 by 1.8-m.) ball-mills we unquestionably gain by screening out the small balls once or twice a month. The point of gaging the ball size to be used by the uniformity of screen sizing is of particular interest. The necessity of sufficient return feed from classifier to the ball-mill is sound and clearly shown. In connection with this, I wish two further points had been gone into as thoroughly: (1) The effect of the quality of classification. In general, it is true that the smaller the per cent. of undersize in the feed the more effective is the mill&apos;s work. This is true on a bucking board, in tube-mills, ball-mills, and grinding pans. Given the possibility of returning. a full-feed load to any mill, it has been my experience that the effective work in the grinder is almost proportional to the quality of the return feed. (2) Again speaking generally, the shorter the tube-mill the greater is the quantity of return feed necessary to keep it loaded. The classification thus keeps the oversize in the mill more free from finished product and thus the crushing more efficient. It is very easy to overload any long mill with too much return

Australia is well endowed with extensive reserves of thick underground coal scams, particularly in the range of 4.5m to 9m thicknesses. (For the purposes of this paper, thick scams are defined as being greater than 4.5m thick.) At the present time, the thickest, high production, high productivity underground mining operation in Australia operates at a maximum of approximately 4.8m using single pass longwall methods. In a number of instances, conventional&apos; height operations are mining thick seam coal, effectively sterilising considerable reserves - either because of financial or technical risk concerns, or in some cases poorer quality coal at some horizons in the scam, UNSW has been involved in thick scam mining research over many years, most recently through an ACARP -funded project, jointly with the CMTE in Australia. A key part of that project involved the assessment of the relative geotechnical risks associated with the various methods under consideration. The methods were: single pass longwall; multi-slice descending longwall; soutirage and related caving methods (including the Chinese Longwall Top Coal Caving method (LTCC)): and hydraulic mining. A formal risk assessment process was adopted to review the risks, relative to a conventional 4m high longwall operation. This paper presents the findings of that risk review and discusses the geotechnical issues (and some possible solutions for risk management) which need to be dealt with in order to bring these methods to fruition in the context of the Australian coal industry environment.
