It was deemed desirable to obtain an understanding of the vacuum desulfurization process. McKechnie1 has reported that the sulfur content of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys is reduced in vacuo. Keverian and Taylor2 have observed that vacuum melting causes desulfurization of iron-carbon-silicon alloys. Garnyk and samarin3 have desulfurized transformer steel by vacuum treatment. Experiments were conducted in order to investigate the desulfurization of liquid iron under reduced pressures, and to establish the effect of some alloying elements, and various crucible materials. A vacuum-induction furnace of 50-lb capacity was used. The charge was Armco iron. Silicon was added as 90 pct ferrosilicon, carbon as electrode graphite, and aluminum as high-purity aluminum metal. Magnesia and silica crucibles were used, their inside diameters were 5 1/2 and 5 3/8 in., respectively. The temperature was measured with an optical pyrometer and it was held at 1600 1 15°C. Samples were withdrawn with quartz tubes of 6 mm ID, without disturbing the furnace atmosphere. Pressures were measured with an alphatron gage. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. They indicate that: 1) Sulfur can be removed from liquid iron alloys by vacuum treatment; 2) The desulfurization is enhanced by the presence of silicon, carbon, and aluminum, all these elements increase the activity of sulfur dissolved in liquid iron;4 3) The pronounced effect of silicon indicates that probably a volatile silicon sulfide is formed, Alcock and Richardson5 have observed a similar phenomenon; 4) The same rate of desulfurization was obtained when the metal was contained in either magnesia or silica crucibles. According to statements by Guertler1 Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the copper-titanium alloys, but owing to the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. M. A. Hunter and I. W. Bacon later investigated the electrical conductivity and the temperature coefficients at room temperature. The present writers reported their results2 in November, 1930. Recently Kroll published data on copper-titanium alloys3 which agree closely with those obtained by the authors. Material Tested The titanium used was in the form of square sintered rods, the analysis of which runs as follows: titanium, 95.4 per cent; silicon, 0.7; iron,l.8; aluminum, 1.4; copper, 0.1; manganese, 0.05. The ingots were prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace in air atmosphere. Their analyses are given in Table 1. Up to 5 per cent titanium the alloys could be forged. Above that amount they were red short and broke up easily. Owing to their rapid absorption of nitrogen and oxygen from the air, the alloys with the higher amounts of titanium tend to form surface films which greatly increase the casting difficulties, especially when small masses of metal are handled. It was, however, possible to prepare sound ingots up to 25 per cent titanium. Thermal and X-ray Investigation The cooling curves of some of the alloys are plotted in Fig. 1, and R tentative diagram constructed from these data is given in Fig. 2. From this it is evident that the solid solubility of copper for titanium is approxi-mately 4 to 5 weight per cent titanium at 878" C., which is the eutectic temperature. The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

The accurate determination of free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes is of increasing interest to Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) gold extraction operations as cyanide consumption is an important economic factor in the processing of complex ores. Characteristically complex ores are high cyanide consumers and these ores usually contain a range of sulfide minerals e.g. covellite (CuS), digenite (Cu1,S), chalcocite (Cu, S), Pyrrhotite (Feci-x)S), marcasite (FeS2), arsenic and antimony sulfides and zinc sulfide. These minerals can consume significant quantities of cyanide, e.g. various copper(!) cyanide complexes such as CuCN, Cu(CN)2·, Cu(CN)/ and Cu(CN)/ can form, depending on the cyanide to copper ratio in solution. Measurement of free and complexed cyanide is thus a prerequisite for efficient cyanide dosage control. Free cyanide can be determined potentiometrically or amperometrically but the methods are prone to error and are laborious [1]. Metal cyanide complexes can be determined by reverse phase HPLC, however, the species ofa single cation (e.g. Cu(CN)i-, Cu(CN);2 and Cu(CN)/) elute as one species [2]. Additionally the high amount of suspended matter in CIP leach solutions tends to introduce errors. Raman spectroscopy has the potential to be used as an in­line or on-line method of analysis. Free cyanide and the cyanides of gold, silver, copper and iron have been studied in aqueous alkaline solutions with a view to developing such a method. Spectra were obtained with a Bruker RFSl00 FT-Raman spectrometer using a 1064 nm laser delivering 800 mW of power at the sample. Depending on the solution, 250, 1000 or 4000 scans at 4 cm-1 resolution were accumulated. The cyanide stretches observed were relatively narrow (10 15 cm-1 full width at half height) and well resolved (Figure 1 ).

This paper addresses establishment of an experimental system for measuring biodynamic response (BR) of hand-arm system at the NIIH in Japan. BR measurement system at the NIIH is nearly equivalent to NIOSH installed system. The feasibility of the system is examined through the apparent mass (AM) measurement of the empty handle and a set of calibration masses. Apparatus The grip force was measured by using the handle shown in Fig. 1. The handle has two force sensors (KISTLER, 9212) and one accelerometer (PCB, 356A12). A low-pass filter with 5 Hz cut-off frequency was used to the grip force from measured force signal. Figure 2 shows BR measurement system in this study. The push or pull force at the handle was measured by using the force plate (KISTLER, 9286AA). The grip force and the push / pull force were displayed on a monitor. The shaker (IMV, VE-100S) is used to vibrate the hand-arm system along the forearm axis (Zh direction) (ISO 10068, 1998; ISO 5349-1, 2001). In most situations force actions for operating tools are expressed by grip, push, pull and combined these actions. These actions can be simulated in the test system. AM was obtained by performing H1 estimator in the PULSETM system (B&K, 3109) and it is denoted at the one-third octave band center frequencies. [ ] Methods In order to investigate the reliability of the system, AM measurement of the handle was performed. It is assumed that the handle is rigid in the upper limit of adoptive frequency range in this study. This assumption is validated in AM measurement of the empty handle. A pseudo-random vibration in the frequency range of 10 to 1,250 Hz was used and its amplitude is 1.0 (m/s2)2/Hz with a flat power spectral density (PSD) in the experiment. Measured AM includes the mass effect of the measuring cap in a subject experiment. Compensated apparent mass AMc(?) is obtained by Eq. (1) 1-2.

"Mining OperationsOre will be mined by open pit techniques. Because of the high grade of the deposit and the low strip ratio, mining rates are small relative to most other open pit operations.The ore deposit is located in the valley of the main fork of Red Dog Creek. The bulk of the deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the creek, but mineralization does traverse the creek in both the north and east directions.Erosion has exposed the orebody in a number of locations, and has resulted in oxidation of the mineralization closer to the surface. Although much of this oxide material is very high grade, it leaches readily and, at least in the initial phases of the operation, will be stockpiled and not treated in the concentrator.During construction, 2.3 million mt. (2.5 million st.) of overburden and waste will be stripped from the orebody to expose ore for initial operations. Competent non-mineralized waste will be used to build roads and waste dumps, but the bulk of material removed consists of oxide or ice-rich soils and weathered rock which is not suitable for construction.The annual ore mining rate will be 1.9 million mt. (21. million st.). The strip ratio will start off at 1.2 to 1, falling to 1.0 to 1 by year 5 and ultimately to 0.8 to 1.Bench heights are set at 7.6 m (25 ft). Pit slopes will vary depending on the material present in the wall. The slope, through competent waste and the sulphide package, was set at 45 degrees. This is flattened to 26 degrees (i.e. 2: 1) through overburden and Upper Kivalina shales. The Kivalina Shales are an ice-rich shale whose carbonate matrix has been leached out and which exhibits little or no strength as it thaws. In addition, a 100 ft containment berm will be left in the wall below overburden and Kivalina."

DURING an investigation of the U-Co-A1, U-Ir-A1, and U-Ni-A1 ternary systems, three previously unknown phases have been identified which correspond to the phases UCoA1, UIrA1, and UNiA1, and which be- long to the C22 (Fe2P) type (P 6 2m). In the following the structure determination of the new ternary phases is reported. The alloys have been prepared in an arc furnace under purified argon from 99.97 wt pct U, 99.83 wt pct Co, 99.99 wt pct Al, 99.95 wt pct Ni, and 99.97 wt pct Ir. The pellets obtained were bright and brittle; chemical analyses agreed with the nominal compositions. To obtain equilibrium, the samples were annealed in evacuated quartz capsules at 950°C for 30 hr and then quenched in water. Guinier photographs were processed and evaluated according to a method already described previously.1,2 The hkl's, measured and calculated sin2 6 values, and in the case of UCoAl only calculated and estimated intensities, are given in Tables I to 111. Lattice parameters refined according to the least-squares method and the respective mean-square variations are presented in Table IV. Lattice parameters, especially the c/a ratio, lead to the assumption that the three phases are crystallizing in the C22-type structure. For the calculation of the intensities given in Table I, the atomic positions recently reported by wyckoff3 have been accepted for the C22 (Fe2P) type. The uranium atoms were assumed to be in phosphorus sites; furthermore the scattering amplitudes of the boron atoms have been averaged in the stoichiometric formula UB2 according to atomic percentages; i.e., for these atoms a statistical distribution on the iron sites was assumed. This case study discusses impacts of excessive Earth Retention System (ERS) lateral movement at a project in city of Chicago. The ERS (cantilevered sheeting) moved inward towards the excavation and caused lateral displacement and cracks in six drilled shafts located about 1 to 2 lateral feet (0.3 to 0.6 m) from the face of the sheet pile wall. Up to 9 inches (23 cm) of horizontal movement was observed on top of the supporting sheet-pile. Similarly, survey measurements showed the top of the drilled shafts moved laterally up to 8 inches (20.3 cm). To evaluate the cause of failure and determine a remediation solution, the soil, shaft and site conditions were investigated. Pile Integrity Tests (PIT) were conducted at the affected drilled shafts. The shafts with identified anomalies were cored and video-recorded. The cause of the failure was determined to be related to variable soil conditions across the site, deeper excavation (i.e., increased effective ERS wall height), and other differences between design and as-built conditions. Internal bracing, in the form of walers and rakers, was installed to limit further movement of the sheet pile as a short-term solution, with additional grade beams framed into the basement slab-on-grade as a long- term solution. Five of the six cracked shafts were spliced with reinforcing bars and high strength grout and one shaft was replaced. INTRODUCTION The subsoil in the Chicago Area mostly consists of glacial till clays underlain by water-bearing granular soil over bedrock. The glacial clays have very soft to medium consistencies for a typical thickness of 30 to 50 feet (9.1 to 15.2 m) below which hard clays (Hardpan, i.e., heavily over-consolidated clay soils) are encountered. The soft clays are often referred to as the “Chicago Blue Clay”. Beach Sands are also found above upper soft clays in several areas, especially within a three-mile strip near Lake Michigan (Peck and Reed 1954). Due to the existence of soft clay in Chicago area, supporting the mid to high rise buildings on drilled shafts extended to Hardpan is a common practice in modern building design. In the early 19th century it used to take about 3 weeks to excavate 1 shaft hole and about 1½ days to fill the shaft with concrete in Chicago (Manierre 1916). The early 19th century methodology of excavating a shaft consisted of hand digging the shaft, installing wood lagging as temporary shoring with spoils removed with a rope and pulley system from the surface. Today, the excavation of a typical drilled shaft in Chicago uses heavy drilling equipment and requires much less time for excavation and concrete placement. It is not uncommon for contractors to excavate shafts and place concrete at a rate of about 2 to 5 drilled shafts per day (with one drill rig).

Canadian sylvinites contain over 90% of KCl and NaCl and a few percent of water-insoluble minerals. Cationic flotation is used to produce KCl concentrates. Since water-insoluble minerals appear in the pulp as slimes, and since long-chain primary amines are utilized as a collector, desliming is essential. The potash industry utilizes different desliming methods. This may involve selective flocculation of the slimes with polyacrylamide and removal of the flocculated product by flotation, or mechanical desliming with the use of classifying cyclones. Whichever method is applied, desliming is never complete; the flotation feed after desliming still contains about one percent of the slimes which heavily affect collector consumption and flotation selectivity. Therefore, the remaining slimes have to be rendered inactive by “blinding” them with polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose or guar gum. The commercial blinders used by the potash industry include natural and synthetic polysaccharides. The most common is the use of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG). These are quite different polymers, while CMC is anionic, GG is non-ionic; while the applied CMCs are of relatively low molecular weight (about 300,000) GGs have much higher molecular weight. Guar gums are also heavily used as the depressants of naturally floatable gangue in the processing of platinum-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. (1999) quite a large variety of modified guar gums are available in South Africa for this application. Cheng et al. (2002) claim that natural guar gum’s molecular weight is 1.935 • 106. Robinson et al. (1982) found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105. The highest molecular weight sample is then very close to the natural guar gum studied by Cheng et al. (2002). According to the manufacturer, the Rantec KP4000 guar gum which is used by the Canadian potash industry has a molecular weight of about 1.5 x 106. Since both KCl and NaCl are soluble in water, the flotation process is carried out in saturated brine. At 20 oC, 1450 kg of NaCl-KCl-H2O saturated solution contains about 0.300 kg of NaCl, 0.150 kg of KCl, and 1 kg of water (Gaska et al., 1965). Thus, in the saturated NaCl-KCl brine there are about 5.1 kmole of NaCl and 2 kmole KCl per 55.5 kmole of water. This gives 3.9 molecules of water per each ion assuming complete dissociation of NaCl and KCl. Thus, it is obvious that all water molecules in the saturated brine must be bound in the hydration shells around the hydrated ions. The surface tension of the NaCl-KCl saturated brine was recently measured to be 85 mN/m (Laskowski et al., 2003).

The 16th annual Mining Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin with a reception and open house at 5:30p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The six inductees include James M. Gerstley, the only living member, and George O. Argall, Jr.; John F. “Leadville Johnny” Campion; Charles R. Nailler; Edwin N. Pennebaker and Russell L. Wood.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing designs and estimating costs for vertical in situ copper mining wells as part of its in situ mining research program. Conceptual designs and estimated costs for "deep" 1100 m (3600 ft) recovery and injection wells in an undisturbed copper ore zone are presented. Within a single in situ copper mining well, multiple perforated well completions and associated costs are discussed for two ore zones between depths of 370 m (1200 ft) and 550 m (1800 ft). The order of well specifications for designing these wells is explained.

The diaphragm walling has been recently adopted in one of the largest excavation of deep foundation engineerings in Shanghai, China with dimension of 90m in length, 50m in width and 13m in depth to solve its stability problem. In this paper the field test for monitoring the stability of the diaphragm wall is discribed, in which the excess pore water pressure and the horizontal displacement of the clay layers were monitored during the period of the excavation. The data measured in the field test are efficient for the safety during construction.

High levels of contamination (non magnetics) were present in the magnetite medium of the D.M. cyclone circuit. Attempts were made to minimise the amount of undersize (-lmm) material in the D.M. cyclone feed by improving initial desliming and examining those factors that contributed to any overall reduction in desliming efficiency. Circuit density control was improved and a system of continuous contamination monitoring implemented. A brief description is included of the major alterations to circuit control philosophy. The significant improvement in overall D.M. cyclone circuit performance is outlined.
