Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.

Laboratory tests were conducted in a full-scale continuous miner test gallery to evaluate resulting dust levels for changes in face airflow, spray water quantity and pressure, and mining height. The minimum and maximum values tested for each parameter were as follows: airflows between 1.42 and 6.14 m3/sec, water flows between 56.8 and 132.5 lpm, nozzles pressures between 413 and 1379 kPa, and mining heights between 1.52 and 2.74 m. Each of these parameters were evaluated for four common spray system designs. Respirable dust samples were collected in the operator&apos;s cab on the miner and in the immediate return. Second-order polynomial models were used to represent expected dust levels and multiple stepwise regression was used to identify significant control parameters for inclusion in the models. Separate models were developed for dust levels at the operator and return locations and for each individual spray system. Interaction between control parameters and curvature effects were found in most models. The analysis indicated that at the operator location, airflow and mining height had the most significant impact on respirable dust levels. In the return, airflow and water pressure were typically the most significant parameters. The models developed for each spray system design can be used by mine operators to guide application of control parameters for a variety of operating conditions and mining heights.

Prediction of fracture and fragmentation characteristics of a rock mass subjected to dynamic loads, such as in blasting remains a major technical challenge. The present study is aimed at characterizing the shock transmission properties in controlled experiments in small scale in a well-characterized granitic rock, under varying borehole coupling conditions. Single blast-hole tests were conducted in a granitic rock sample of 145 mm (5.7 inches) diameter and height. The boreholes (in two diameters: 6.4 mm (1/4 inch) or 9.5 mm (3/8 inch)) were loaded with detonating cord of varying charge weight (5.3 g/m or 25 grains/ft to 31.8 g/m or 150 grains/ft of PETN). The effect of explosion gas penetration into the target rock was eliminated by inserting a thin-walled copper liner along the borehole wall. Embedded carbon composite resisters were employed at varying distances from the borehole to measure transmitted shock pressure for two coupling conditions (i.e. air and water) at distances of 1x to 9x the borehole diameter. The paper analyzes the decay of shock pressure as a function of distance from the borehole, and its implication on shock-induced fracture properties of the target rock as the first step in predicting fracture and fragmentation behaviour in a well-characterized rock.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. One of the world leading oil majors is carrying out a multi-billion-dollar expansion of its integrated manufacturing complex in Jurong Island, Singapore, the global oil trading and refining hub. Soil conditions at the site comprise 10-20m thick reclaimed sand, below which is 3-5m of soft marine clay underlain by stiff soils of the Jurong Formation. The conventional foundation solution would adopt driven precast concrete spun piles; however, precast spun piles have a high embodied carbon from the usage of steel and cement. In order to reduce the carbon footprint, an alternative solution comprising deep vibro techniques was developed. The EFFC-DFI carbon calculator was used to demonstrate the expected scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions for both driven pile and vibro techniques. By using in-house, state-of-the-art fuel-efficient machines, alongside the innovative design concept and usage of natural materials such as sand and stones, actual CO2e emissions were reduced from a potential 21,000 tonnes, with the spun pile’s solution, to only 1,900 tonnes. The saved 20,100 tCO2e is equivalent to an average car driving 2,000x around the Earth’s equator. The paper discusses the application of soil improvement as a more sustainable, lower carbon alternative to conventional piled solutions.

"Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. Whilst there is much innovative work being undertaken in South East Asia in the space allowed in this paper we have settled on describing in more detail the work that has been done with shaft grouting of deep foundations and piles founded in rock both in end bearing and socket friction. The paper is necessarily in two parts. The first part is about the application of shaft grouting since its introduction to the region some eight years ago. It describes, for the first time, much of the detail of the different techniques used and the construction and the design benefits achieved with shaft grouting in five countries in the region. The second part outlines the enhancements achieved in the design of piles founded in rock and brings together the results of 10 years of test loading. This includes the load testing of 1.2m to 1.5m diameter piles to a maximum of 30MN on granite and a recent programme of tests on a wide range of strong rock types in Hong Kong. The ground conditions for these deep foundations vary widely, from sedimentary soils to in situ weathered granite and meta-sedimentary rocks. The construction techniques include barrettes constructed using mill techniques and bored piles formed under bentonite and water using both oscillators and rotators.

The object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the outlines of several forms of ports for steel-melting turnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture; of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M, Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him fur the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. 1 has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr. A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched roof of nearly the ordinary form, instead of over the top of the roof, as with the dome of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or " washing "-—to use the briefer French term. in this the gas and air come into contact in broad sheets one above the other, Fig. 5 shows the form used by Messrs. The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District&apos;s Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

The Nickel Rim Depth Cu-Ni-PGE deposit, discovered by Falconbridge Limited in 1993, illustrates several trends in exploration in the Sudbury area. Recent discoveries tend to be deep, high grade, footwall hosted, close to or straddle property boundaries and made using a multi-disciplinarian exploration approach that integrates economic considerations with geology, metal geochemistry and geophysics (borehole EM). The Nickel Rim deposit occurs down dip of Inco&apos;s Victor Deep deposit (4.2 million tonnes at 2.25 per cent Ni, 7.30 per cent Cu) in the eastern margin of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at a depth of 2650 m. Before commencing drilling an economic evaluation was done to determine the minimum size needed to be economic at the expected depths and determine the expected value of an exploration venture. The subsequent surface exploration program discovered a drill indicated, undiluted mineral inventory of 1.6 million tonnes of 1.58 per cent Ni, 10.13 per cent Cu, 4.17g/t Pt and 3.50 g/t Pd including 519 000 tonnes of 4.13 per cent Ni, 25.53 per cent Cu, 9.76 g/t Pt and 8.42 g/t Pd. The deposit is hosted by gneiss, migmatite, gabbro and pseudotachylite (Sudbury Breccia) 100 m below the base of the SIC.

Nowadays, hard carbides have found various industrial application in the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools as well as metal forming devices. About 60% of the world tungsten production is consumed in the manufacture of hard carbide pieces. Regarding the high economic value of hard carbide components, i.e., Ni, Co, TaC, TiC, and WC, their recovery from scrap species is attracting much interest. In the current research, the cobalt and tungsten content were recovered from scrap cemented carbide pieces through the application of high voltage electrolysis in nitric acid media. By this method, cobalt and tungsten were initially recovered as cobalt nitrate and tungstic acid, respectively. The precipitate of tungstic acid was calcined at 800ºC after being washed twice with distilled water. A pure tungstic oxide was obtained. The effects of current density, electrolyte concentration, speed of agitation, and the surface area of the anode on the efficiency of the electrolysis process were investigated. The optimum conditions of current density of 1500 A/m2, an acid concentration of 1.5 M, and a cell temperature in the vicinity of 60 to 80ºC were obtained. At the optimum conditions, an acceptable rate of collapse for the anodic carbide pieces of about 3.1 g/h was achieved, which remained constant up to the completion of the recovery process without any passivation .

The U.S. Department of Interior&apos;s Bureau of Mines has the opportunity to visit many U.S. mines, including some that claim 2 to 5 times the national average of 334 raw tonnes/unit shift (tps) from a continuous miner section. In a project to assess the reasons for this high production, the Bureau conducted two studies. The first study focused on the 25 highest producing continuous miner sections. What stood out during the visits-was the quality of the labor-management relations. In each of the mines there was a positive labor/management relationship based on mutual trust and a sense that the employees were the company&apos;s most valuable resource. Discussions with labor revealed a universally positive attitude toward the company. Interviews with the mine superintendents invariably ranked the quality and attitude of workers as more important than anything else. Also during the mine visits of the 25- mine study, no engineering factors obviously stood out. Time at the face was greater than average, most were in coal over 1.52 m and the roof was generally good. Also, none of the 25 mines had to contend with high methane levels. Because this study found that a high percentage of mines were in seams less than 1.52 m thick, the second study examined thin seam mines only.

During the past few years, the first stage of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP) which consists of an exploratory shaft, a ventilation shaft, shaft stations, access drifts and test rooms, has been under construction. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1983. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is constructing the WIPP facility to demonstrate the feasibility of disposing of defense-related nuclear waste in the bedded salt deposits of the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad, N.M. The project promises to be a proving ground for underground nuclear waste storage facility design and construction. The completed underground plant will extend over an area of 647,500 m2 (160 acres), and 1,360,500 metric tons (1,500,000 tons) of salt will be excavated. The first stage of the project, the Site and Preliminary Design Validation (SPDV) Program, provides for full-scale construction of the major components of the underground facility. Shaft construction and underground development are described. Rock bolt installation is performed as required for roof control. Geotechnical instrumentation is installed to monitor the behavior of underground openings. Direct observation of the constructed shafts, shaft stations, and underground openings is expected to confirm the adequacy of the underground design and allow full-scale construction of the first U.S. underground nuclear waste storage facility to proceed.

SINCE the original formulation of fracture mechanics concepts,&apos;y2 relatively little work has related the fracture mechanics description of metal behavior on a gross, structural component scale to the behavior of its microstructural constituents. The purpose of this note is to suggest the utilization of fracture mechanics to describe material behavior on a microscopic scale. A Fracture Concept for Two-Phase Structures. A critical displacement concept considering the tough unidirectional phase in a relatively brittle matrix is first examined. It is assumed that a flaw exists at position 1 as depicted in Fig. 1. As the crack moves from position 1 to 2 the plastic zone could be of the shape described with the size approximated by the Dugdale3 model: where c is the half-crack length, OO is the applied stress, and oyS is the yield strength. Hahn and Rosen-field4 have presented a simple fracture criterion for homogeneous materials based upon the displacement at the crack tip. They also have shown the equivalence of the critical displacement, v*, to fracture toughness by Kc = (2v*oysE)1/2 [2] The displacement at the crack tip is given by and the displacement at any distance in front of the crack tip may be determined knowing the plastic zone size and utilizing the development of Goodier and Field.5 Recalling Fig. 1, the value of v* for fracture in material M1 may be calculated from Eq. [2] providing the critical stress intensity factor is known. As the material is loaded, when vc > vM1 the crack moves from position 1 to position 2 where it encounters the tough second phase. If vc2 < vm2, then the crack will be arrested providing the width of the M2 phase is sufficiently large. This condition is necessary since the displacement at position 2 has increased due to the longer crack length. Thus, the displacement at the distance X (representing the dimension of the second phase) in front of the crack may be larger than the critical displacement for failure in the brittle material. If v, > vm, then failure will proceed in the brittle material. The value of v, may be calculated as indicated above. This latter consideration is the same as predicting fracture of a brittle second phase at some distance in front of a crack located in a ductile matrix. Experimental Evidence. On a macrostructural scale, tungsten wires in a ductile Be-Cu matrix are seen to fracture well ahead of the main crack front in Fig. 2. Utilizing a Kc value of 14.2 ksi-in.1/2 obtained by Schroder et al.6 for as-received tungsten, the critical displacement 2v*, for fracture is calculated from Eq. [2] to be about 6.5 X 10-5 in. The crack tip displacement, 2vc, is calculated from Eq. [3] to be 0.0028 in. indicating that fracture would occur at a considerable distance in front of the crack tip. From the ratio of v*/vc and the plastic zone estimate of Eq. [I], the distance in front of the crack tip at which a tungsten wire should fracture is calculated to be about 0.195 in. As shown in Fig. 2, a fractured wire occurs at a distance of 0.140 in. (fractured in three places), not at 0.250

The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

Explosive demolition involves first, the use of cutting charges to sever a column and second, kicker charges to move it out of alignment. Dynamite is the traditional explosive used in kicker charges as it is inexpensive, easy to initiate, and has a consistent track record of use. Dynamite, however, has health concerns in handling, fragmentation concerns from direct contact on the beam, and availability concerns due to being manufactured at only one location in the continental United States. Recently, water-cased kicker charges have been used in industry, and research has shown that a reduced dynamite mass is possible due to the added confinement, for energetic performance, and the incompressible fluid, which aids in the transfer of explosive energy into beam movement. This research will compare two different explosives, an emulsion (DYNO AP), and binary (HELIX), to dynamite for use in kicker charges, both with and without water-casing. Emulsion is commonly used in rock blasting to create a large push or throw due to its high gas volume production which could translate to kicker charge movement. HELIX is a binary explosive commonly used by the military in breaching charges with water backing. Experimental tests placed kicker charges at the base of a hanging steel column, modifying the ballistic mortar test used to determine explosive power. The study shows that water-casing effectively reduces air overpressure and enhances explosive performance. Among the tested explosives, HELIX showed the most substantial improvements with a 1.8 dB reduction in air overpressure and a 3.2 m/s (10.5 ft/s) increase in column velocity when water-cased. Dynamite and emulsion also benefited from water casing, with decreases in air overpressure (1.1 and 0.7 dB respectively) and increases in column velocity (1.1 and 0.7 m/s (3.6 and 2.3 ft/s) respectively). This research also shows that emulsion is a viable replacement for dynamite in demolition projects, performing similarly in both traditional use and water-cased charges.

This investigation was carried on by means of models and the application of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimension. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in. bed B, a ?-in. bed C and two ?-in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at + 2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back ¼ in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft. and no artificial support. Fig. 2(A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure where breaker and face props were used. The props were exceptionally strong, being of steel ? in. square in cross section, and capped with 1/16 in. ± of soft wood and paper, to allow for roof deflection. The face props were

They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in. bed B, a ?-in. bed C and two ?-in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at + 2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back ¼ in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft. and no artificial support. Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Hence, the discussion of these discoveries will be limited. Bee County.—Three new gas fields were added during the year: Beeville, discovered by G. M. Church in No. 1 Wood on Sept. 21; Foley, discovered by Dirks Bros. in No. 1 Foley on Feb. 8; and Plummer, discovered by Hynes and Fisher in No. 1 T. M. Plummer on Sept. 2. The three new oil fields added are: Hartzendorf, drilled on fee land by Hartzendorf and completed on May 17 as a small pumper; Ray, southwest of Tuleta, and discovered by Jameson and Burns in No. 1 Campbell
