"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine, located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is a primary/secondary blasthole operation with ore zones lying between 1,100 and 1,700 m below surface. One of the main benefits of the primary/secondary mining method in high stress ground is that up to 50% of the mining will take place in secondary stopes that should be in a yielded rock mass state. Every future secondary mining stope begins as a primary stope abutment pillar. As with many mines, the stress loading history and rock mass conditions can vary considerably in space and time. Safe mining practices cannot allow for an assumption that the planned secondary stopes are indeed yielded. An incorrect assumption can result in mining development and stoping taking place in high stress ground rather than the expected yielded rock mass conditions. This can result in higher levels of seismicity than expected and incorrect ground support recommendations in areas where workers could be exposed. Seismic monitoring is the mines’ premier tool to track the actual rock mass response to mining. Yielded zones have a reasonably clear seismic signature/pattern over time that is visible in the collected data. The ability to accurately locate small magnitude seismic events can help define and delineate different stages of rock mass failure. The vast majority of the seismic data recorded by the microseismic monitoring system is below moment magnitude (Mw) 0.0. Examples are provided showing how small seismic events (Mw < -1.5) can help provide feedback from the rock mass deformation that allows the ground control engineer to gain a better understanding of how the rock mass is responding to mining processes.

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

INTRODUCTION The Columbia River Basalt beneath the Hanford Site is one of several rock types being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy for the first commercial high-level nuclear waste repository. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has been carrying out a comprehensive investigation to assess the feasibility of constructing a repository in basalt and to develop technology required for repository engineering and site characterization. Development of a nuclear waste repository requires a number of design considerations not usually necessary in the planning of conventional underground structures. Principal among these is the thermally induced stress field resulting from waste emplacement. This thermal stress, super- imposed on the preexisting in situ- and excavation- induced stress fields, needs to be evaluated in the design process due to the sensitivity of waste emplacement density to this factor. The nature of this thermally induced stress field is dependent on several factors, including the temperature distribution around the repository openings, the thermal properties of the rock mass, and the deformability of the rock mass. Re1iable performance of the repository structure is largely determined by the ability to under- stand the above rock mass characteristics and predict the underground opening response to waste emplacement based on this understanding. To gain an understanding of this rock mass behavior in a repository condition, the BWIP has conducted a large-scale heated block test in basalt at the Near-Surf ace Test Facility (NSTF) on the Hanford Site. This paper presents the results from the elevated temperature phase of the block test in which the thermal, mechanical, and thermo- mechanical response of the closely jointed basalt rock mass was evaluated as a function of stress and loading orientation at varying temperatures up to 200 oC. SITE GEOLOGY The NSTF test areas, including the block test site, are located in the entablature zone of the Pomona basalt f low. The Pomona flow entablature is structurally typical of most flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group in that it is characterized by long, undulating, polygonal columns up to 2.4 m in length. Columns vary from 15 to 30 cm in diameter, averaging about 20 cm. Over their length, columns can vary in dip by 150 to 200. The column structures are dissected by subhorizontal cross joints that are generally discontinuous and seldom cross columnar joint boundaries. Spacing of the cross joints also averages about 20 cm. A representative joint pattern taken from mapping of the tunnel wall near the block test site is shown in figure 1. Application of the Rock Mass Rating System (Bieniawski, l979) to the block test site yielded an overall value of 62. The corresponding value from application of the Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) is 8.7 (Cramer and Kim,1985). The NSTF is approximately 50 m below the surf ace. However, this depth is sti1l above the water table and conditions are generally dry. Interstitial water exists as the result of percolation of meteoric water from the surface.

INTRODUCTION Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of contaminant metal ions and other chemicals on the flotation. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances, cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions. Some adsorption (abstraction) experiments were also performed. Experimental materials and methods The barite used was a high-purity, naturally occur¬ring mineral sample (Kings Creek, SC). The material was ground in a porcelain mill and a fine fraction (mean particle size 11.49 µm) separated out by air elutriation. The mean size was determined by an aqueous sedimentation method using a CAHN electro-balance. In the method, an 0.6-g sample of the barite was dispersed in 450 cm3 of pH 7 water containing 0.01 g of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean particle size was denoted X0. The stability of the barite suspensions was determined by a comparison of the mean size of the investigated barite suspension aggregations with the mean size of barite powder determined in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean sizes (X) of the barite aggregations were determined using the same amount of water and barite sample as in the measurements of dispersed barite particle size but without the presence of polyphosphate. The ratio X/Xo is thus a measure of the stability of a suspension (the greater the ratio, the less stable the suspension). The adsorption (abstraction) experiments were carried out in polyethylene bottles containing 1 g of barite powder in 200 mL of solution. The solids were added to a solution containing a known concentration of metal chloride salts (AlCl3, FeCl2, MgCl2, and CaCl2) . The pH was controlled by both HCl and NaOH addition. The suspensions were agitated in a shaker for three hours. The final ion concentrations in solution were determined by atomic absorption analysis. The electrokinetic measurements were made using a Komline-Sanderson Zeta Reader in a conventional manner. All experiments were carried out in the presence of 1.0x10-3 k.mol/m3 NaClO4. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a postmining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64 degrees, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457 m wide and 3657 m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones

In 1959, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (Aus. I.M.M.) was asked by the Federal Government of Australia and the State Government of South Australia to join in the formation and management of a new contract research organization which was subsequently named The Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (Arndel) ? This body was formerly the Research and Development Branch of the South Australian Department of Mines which had been set up to develop the Radium Hill uranium deposit. It had then gone into contract R&D and the State felt that it would be more appropriate for the Branch to become a separate national organization. The Aus. I.M.M. decided that a professional institute could not participate directly in Arndel and, as there was no other suitable industry group to do so, it formed the. Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Limited (AMIRA). AMIRA held its first Annual General Meeting in September 1959 when the first Council was elected and the Memorandum and Articles of Association were adopted. The initial task of AMIRA was to raise guarantees of work or cash from its members to underwrite Arndel for the first five years of operation. The Federal and State Governments also provided guarantees and Arndel commenced operations in January 1960.

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with engineers from the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering, Montana Tech, Butte, MT, conducted tests to evaluate the tensile strength, fiber count, and adhesion of shotcrete applied to panels at the Chief Joseph Mine, a research and training facility operated by Montana Tech. The tests were conducted in the mine ramp 45 m (150 ft) inward from the access portal at a 15.25-m- (50-ft) long test area divided into five 3-m- (10-ft) long sections. The shotcrete was applied with an Aliva 240.5 machine fitted with a predampener. Different amounts of fiber were entrained for each panel. Background data for the tests were obtained from earlier tests in Nevada, where the typical amount of fiber in the shotcrete is 6.54 kg/m3 (11 lb/yd3). All shotcrete was applied to a minimum thickness of 76 mm (3 in). Cylindrical cores were drilled at the wall-rock interface, and adhesion was tested after 28 days of curing. The goal of this research is to reduce the need to install multiple supports at the advancing face by creating a safer mining system that limits the time miners are exposed to unprotected roof.

The Tacubaya subway tunnels form a link in the Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (Mass Transit System) of the Federal District of Mexico. One tunnel 327 m long lies to the north of Tacubaya Station, the other 811 m long, to the south. The tunnels are designed to accommodate two subway trains, one inbound and one outbound, within the inside diameter of 8.5 m. The designers of the tunnel lining and tunnel driving equipment were faced with the problem of driving two subway tunnels 9.0 m outside diameter through water-bearing soil, directly beneath a high speed limited access highway, a main drainage sewer, structures including residences and office buildings, on an alignment curved for 67 per cent of tunnel length, and on grades as high as 7 per cent, within a limited budget, with minimum damage to property and disruption to the community. Planning The following decisions affecting tunnel design and construction were made at an early stage of planning: Shield. To enhance safety, a tunnel shield would be used for tunnel driving. Dewatering. The water-bearing soil could be effectively dewatered; consequently, tunnel driving could be performed in free air. Hand Mining. To minimize investment in equipment, hand mining would be used to excavate and support the face.

INTRODUCTION The Soudan 2 Cavern was completed in 1986 as a physics research laboratory located 713 m below ground in northern Minnesota. A paper in the 1985 RETC proceedings presented the background and planned usage for the cavern, site investigation and rock conditions, contract documents, and a bid summary. This is a follow-up paper describing construction of the cavern. The Soudan 2 excavation, 71.8 m long by 13.9 m wide by 11.6 m high, was excavated by drill and blast methods and mucked by crawler tractor and mine hoist. The excavation sequence consisted of twin top-heading pilot tunnels followed by removal of the top heading pillar and finally the bench. Various blasting designs were used to achieve adequate breakage and acceptable levels of blast damage control at the cavern perimeter. The geologic conditions exposed in the cavern, and the support needs of the rock encountered, are compared to the conditions interpreted from the site investigation. The influence of specific geologic features on cavern performance will be described. Initial support and final lining consisted of full length grouted rockbolts and reinforced and plain shotcrete. Trials were conducted with steel-fiber reinforced shotcrete and microsilica additives. The mining method at the Cannon mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill before pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars are 7.3 m wide by 19.8 to 28.9 m high (24 ft by 65 to 95 ft). They require careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, and to minimize wall damage and ground vibration. The Cannon mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc., a 92% owned subsidiary of Gulf Canada Ltd., and Breakwater Ltd. Asamera is the operator. The mine is located at the south end of Wenatchee, WA, a town of roughly 45,000 people on the eastern flanks of the Cascade Mountains. Gold is the primary product at the mine. The rock is extracted using a sublevel end-slicing method on 15 m (50 ft) lifts, with subsequent backfilling and pillar removal. The stope widths, dictated by rock conditions at 7.3 m (24 ft), are the same in the primaries as in the pillars, or secondaries.

"During the mid to late 1960s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace, supporting a large part of the world demand, until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to its production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1.5-kt/h (1,650-stph) hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market.BackgroundPotash production is a major Saskatchewan industry and has played a significant role in the economy for more than 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) Mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in 12 companies opening 10 mines by 1970. In 1975, Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan, and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine, near Saskatoon.Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 miles) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3,300 ft) below surface.PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN$7 billion.The $1.6-billion Cory expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 Mt/a (3 million stpy), an increase of 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy). To achieve 2.7 Mt/a (3 million stpy) of finished product and considering the 22.6 percent average production recovery (Potash Corp, 2013), 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) of ore must be hoisted to the surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly that the work was completed safely (Potash Corp., 2013)."

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has previously established pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry. These guidelines were created from an empirical database of pillar observations and were largely drawn from shallow, flat-lying mining operations. Current trends forecast a great amount of underground stone mines developing under deeper cover, higher seam dips, and more frequent multiple-seam mining configurations than in the past. The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these environments presents a substantial increased risk of ground failure. To investigate these loading conditions, NIOSH has installed a pillar and roof monitoring system at an underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania. The mine is operating in a seam with dips ranging from 13 to 18 degrees and overburdens ranging from 275 m (900 ft) to 425 m (1,400 ft). Instrumentation installed in an undeveloped pillar and in surrounding strata is currently measuring pillar and roof behavior in response to stress redistribution during excavation. Laser scans are being used to measure ground displacement and changes in conditions associated with local mining conditions and significant geological features. Initial stress measurements show a gradual increase in stress in response to mining, and stress changes that correspond with blasts. The seismic system is operational, with calibration events signaling on each of the 18 sensors. INTRODUCTION Improving mine-wide ground control stability can help reduce the potential for catastrophic failure of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted prior research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2015). The data that constitute the S-Pillar program were derived from past mining experience that was almost exclusively drawn from shallow, flat-lying, single-level mining operations1. Stakeholder interactions with NIOSH researchers have indicated that increased numbers of underground stone operations are expected to mine under significantly deeper cover, with greater seam dips, and under multi-level operating conditions (Slaker and Murphy, 2016). The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these challenging environments present a substantial increased risk of ground failure. Inadequate pillar design in these new and challenging environments could result in catastrophic wide-area pillar collapses and an increased safety burden to miners working in the U.S. limestone mining industry. To develop design guidelines and prevent inadequate pillar designs for these challenging environments, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at case-study mine sites operating in challenging environments."

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

"INTRODUCTION The Jefferson Barracks Tunnel is in the final stages of design and is expected to go out to bid in the summer of 2016. The project is located in south St. Louis County along the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 13 km downstream of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The project consists of a deep sanitary sewer tunnel, a deep pump station and several intakes. The intakes will divert sanitary flows into the tunnel and the tunnel will convey the flows by gravity to the Lemay No. 3 Pump Station, which will pump them up into the Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The tunnel is about 5.4 km long and will be lined with 84-inch (2.1 m) fiberglass pipe. It drops at a gradient of 0.1 percent from south to north and will be bored through strong limestone using a hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The diameter of the TBM is anticipated to be about 3.4 m. The Owner’s original concept was for a relatively shallow tunnel so as to minimize construction and pumping costs. The preferred alignment ran close to the river, next to the existing force main, which was to be abandoned. Keeping the tunnel close to the force main would reduce the amount of shallow sewer work needed to connect the existing feeder sewers to the new tunnel. Several geotechnical investigations were performed, with shallowly focused geophysics and the borings all going exactly down the conceptual tunnel depth. Limestone bluffs run along the Missouri side of the river. These bluffs are pockmarked by sinkholes and riddled with karst. Large, well-known caves occur both north and south of the alignment. Karst features, including deep crevices and possible caves, were found in those early geotechnical investigations. Many of these features extended well below the level of the Mississippi River and would have been encountered by the tunnel. If a large crevice or cave were encountered, then the inflow of mud and water into the tunnel could have been large and possibly uncontrollable. Something had to be done to mitigate this situation. Pre-excavation grouting was considered, but the program would have been huge and extremely expensive. Using a closed-face TBM with bolted and gasketed lining was also considered, but that too was both risky and extremely expensive. The Owner could have abandoned the tunnel altogether and built a new force main, but that would have brought a whole new set of problems and was undesirable to the Owner. The last option was to move the tunnel away from the karst."

"R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."
