Background of Erie Mining Company Erie Mining Company, managed by Pickands Mather & Co., is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in the United States. The plant is located at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, sixty-five miles north of Duluth on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range. Taconite Harbor, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, is the location of its Power Plant and shipping facilities. (Figure 1) Even though the plant commenced operation in September, 1957, its true be-ginning can be traced back to 1931 when Pickands Mather, in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, began investi-gating the possibilities of processing low grade ores. In 1940, Erie Mining , Company was formed. During the early and middle 1940's, laboratory and pilot plant research was proven to a point where a preliminary plant was deemed feasible and built in 1948. This plant had an annual capacity of 203,200 t (200,000 long tons) per year and, until mid-1952, was the only taconite plant in existence using commercial-size equipment. During this period, ownership of Erie Mining Company was expanded to include Interlake, Inc. and The Steel Company of Canada, Limited. In 1953, authorization was obtained from the owners to build a 7.62 M t (7.5 M long tons) per year plant at a cost in excess of $300,000,000.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser. On the Corramandel Peninsula of New Zealand, the Waihi Gold Mine has undergone a major redevelopment. The upgrade included the construction of two very large overland belt conveyors, both rated for a capacity of 6000tph. The first of these conveyors (CVR2) traverses a total of 1600m over undulating terrain, including a significant section running through tunnels. A large hill is climbed, just after the mid-section of the conveyor run, before dropping back down prior the discharge point. The second of these conveyors (CVR8) traverses 1100m along an alignment with a horizontal curve, a number of vertical curves and a significant lift before the discharge point. The CVR8 conveyor also included a shuttling head pulley arrangement. The mine they service is inside the town of Waihi. The conveyor alignment runs through the town and out to the metallurgical process site on the outskirts of the municipal area. This paper documents the engineering process that took place in the design of these conveyors. The Martha Hill mine in Waihi, New Zealand is unique. The mine is placed in the township. Consequently there are quite stringent environmental limitations on the mine's operation. In [Figure 1] the proximity of the mine to the town is shown. In the top-centre of the photograph the alignment of the existing smaller overland conveyor can be seen leading from the mine to a tunnel through the hill in the background.

"The Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline tunnel project is the largest (7.8 km) and the deepest (90 m) subsea tunnel in South Korea. This tunnel will house a pipeline to carry natural gas from the mainland to Geoje Island southeast of the country to alleviate the increased demands for natural gas, especially in the winter season. Tunneling is currently underway using two slurry shield TBMs of 3.5 m diameter. This paper describes the major design elements of the tunneling machines and their performance evaluation. For this purpose, a thorough analysis of geotechnical information was performed to evaluate the tunnel elevation to reduce the risk of tunneling under high water pressure in unstable and permeable rock mass under 9 bar water pressure. TBM specification and TBM performance were also analyzed using different methods, including well-known models as well as a rotary cutting machine test developed in house in Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. INTRODUCTION High demand for natural gas, especially in winter season was the primary driving factor for the design of the Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline project. This project is located southeast of South Korea between Jinhae district and Geoje Island and runs for over 50 km length. The mid part of this project includes a 3.5 m diameter subsea tunnel consisting of two sections of Geoje to Jiri Island (4.3 km) and Jinhae to Jiri Island (3.5 km). Figure 1 shows the tunnel project location and its layout. Figure 2 shows the geological profile along the tunnel. As can be seen, the tunnel passes mainly through three rock types: granite, tuff breccia, and andesite tuff. This tunnel was planned to be constructed by two face pressurized shielded TBMs and to be lined with a segmental lining of 2.8 m internal diameter. The major challenge for this tunnel is its maximum expected water pressure at the tunnel invert (8.83 bar). At such a high water pressure, the TBMs required special design to ensure they can handle unexpected water pressure and to ensure the risks for the TBM maintenance intervention are minimal. In this regard, a thorough analysis was conducted on the TBM design parameters and geotechnical information to define required TBMs’ design parameters and to identify the safest tunnel elevation. This paper provides a brief overview of the project geotechnical information, TBM selection and its design specification, tunnel elevation selection, and TBM penetration rate evaluation. In this regard, a rotary cutting machine testing equipment was used to perform trial tests on a similar rock type encountered along the tunnel for performance evaluation and optimization."

Though installations of main mine fans vary widely, the commonest installation is of a surface exhaust fan connected to an upcast shaft some distance below its collar by a horizontal fan drift bending sharply. downwards near its junction with the shaft. The junction of the fan drift with the shaft often causes considerable shock pressure loss if not properly designed. In one of the major coal mines in India circulating 180 m3/s of air through the mine a pressure drop of 229 Pa out of the total fan pressure of 568 Pa occurred at this junction while in a smaller gold mine circulating 9.4 m3/s it was 147 Pa out of a fan-drift pressure of 382 Pa. With larger mines circulating larger volumes of air, ill designed fan drifts can lead to considerable wastage of the power of ventilation. Shock loss at the junction of fan drifts with exhaust shafts depends on (1) the angle of deflection of the bend, (2) sharpness of the corners (both inner and outer) at the junction, (3) the degree of contraction of the flow-stream which depends on the cross- sectional area ratio of the shaft and the fan drift as well as the amount of leakage through the shaft collar. It must be noted here that the friction pressure loss in the bend is negligible compared to the shock pressure loss.

"The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

"The Ejpovice tunnels in Czech Republic were built by EPBM in soft Clyashale, and in weathered profile with low soil overburden. The segmented liner at the cross-passage openings required support, which would not interfere with the EPBM clearance envelope during the scheduled pull back of the EPBM through both tunnel tubes. For that reason support frames or radial bolting could not be used. Steel rods inserted into the neighboring segments during the ring assembly, and later grouted were tested and realized as an innovative solution. The paper presents practical experience gained with the segmented liner support during cross-passages construction. INTRODUCTION An innovative solution using the grouted dowels was developed and realized for sixteen cross-passage openings of the twin Ejpovice Tunnels, whose construction was part of the railway track Rokycany – Plzen modernization. The following paper described practical experience gained with the innovative support of cross-passage openings, which was realized by short steel dowels grouted within the segments of the EPBM segmented liner. The paper is a continuation of the paper published in WTC 2015, which described the design aspects of the grouted dowels support, while the following paper concentrated on the production, and the performance of the dowel support observed during the breakout for the cross-passages openings. The connection by grouted dowels was patented by Metrostav, a.s. Company THE EJPOVICE TUNNELS CONSTRUCTION The Ejpovice tunnels construction started in 2013. The start of the high speed train operation through the tunnels was planned for 2018. The project was funded by the state government with the support of European Union funds of up to 70%.The tunnels were excavated with one EPBM (Earth Pressure Balanced Machine) with the external diameter of 9.89 m. The segmental liner inner diameter was 8.7 m, and thickness of 0.4 m. First, the South tunnel tube was excavated from the East portal, then the EPBM was pulled back through the South tunnel, and the excavation was started from the same portal for the North tube. After the South tube was freed from the EPBM excavation operations the cross-passage construction started. Due to the short time schedule, in the North tube the cross-passage construction started while the tunnel was still under construction. Therefore, the cross-passage construction was performed concurrently with the segments transportation, and with the EPBM pull-back through the tunnel. There were 8 cross-passages along the tunnels with a maximum distance of about 500 m, Fig.1."

The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

INTRODUCTION One of the main advantages of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is its adaptability to varying rock conditions. This method is therefore successfully applied when complex geologic features are expected which cause uncertainties in the prognosis of the rock mass behaviour, as was the care at the Arlberg Expressway Tunnel. Furthermore, by employing the NATM problems are avoided when encountering varying geologic conditions or even extension fault zones along the tunnel, as was the case at the Dalaaser Tunnel and Perjen Tunnel. The NATM can also be used for rock and soil. The following examples will show how various rock conditions can be mastered. In accordance with the NATM all tunnels which will be discussed are road tunnels having a cross section area between 70 and 100 m2. The construction consists of a primary support, which ensures stress redistribution during excavation (Figure 1). The primary support is reinforced shotcrete strengthened by steel arches, when necessary, and rock bolts. When encountering rock pressure, swelling rock or soil, the primary support is suplemented by an invert arch. The purpose of the secondary lining is to increase the safety of the tunnel with regard to long-term stress redistribution processes or changes in rock mass properties as well as to protect the insulation. The secondary lining consists of cast concrete without reinforcement and is generally 0.25 or 0.30 m thick.

The paper seeks to present the application of ground control research at Mosaboni Copper Mines to increase the size of stoping areas. Room and Pillar stopes were experimented for increased production dispensing with the conventional breast stoping. The experimental stopes, with spans varying from 10 to 15 m, were extensively instrumented to study the behaviour of wall rocks (chlorite schist) and to determine the optimum span in the workings, dipping at 25° to 45° and 3 to 5 m in height. The observations confirmed that 15 m wide span could be safely worked with 3 m wide rib pillars at 600 to 800 m depth by using rock bolts. Ground conditions improved with the use of full-column cement grouted bolts dispensing with timber supports and the productivity was improved.

SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. "SUMMARY The Hachinoshiri tunnel is a 2,469 m long two-lane road tunnel on the Chubu-Odan Expressway. Since more than 70% of the total tunnel length consists of low strength rock masses the competence factor of which is less than 1.0, it is expected that a self standing span cannot be achievable because of no ground arch to be established. The tunnel was thus designed with tunnel support patterns forming multi-arc early ring closure that can develop the load-carrying capacity estimated from the exerted earth pressure, Po, which can result from the competence factor, cf. The tunnel support pattern was selected based on the competence factor at tunnel face, then the subsequent tunnel support patterns were determined with reference to the monitoring data. The tunnel construction adopted full-face excavation accompanied by early ring closure using a 330 kW road header. The proposed construction methods at this tunnel site have turned out ensuring tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, so that they can be verified as reasonable tunnelling technologies, clarifying the relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its design parameters. INTRODUCTION The presence of highly weathered mudstone having the competence factor less than 1.0 where the tunnel became unstable with the early ring closure having the distance to early ring closure, Lf, of 6 meters, resulting in difficulty in maintaining the inner section of the tunnel, prompted a substantial amount of high strength double support and replacing of the tunnel support (Sato et al., 2015). Based on the mechanical characteristics learned from the construction, the mechanical stability of multi-arc tunnels was investigated using 3D FDM analyses with respect to the ratio of the radius for early ring closure, r3/r1, and the distance to early ring closure, Lf, so that tunnel support patterns for early ring closure can be established in terms of the competence factor, of, which was employed for a 725 m long section. Consequently the tunnel support patterns for early ring closure which can be determined from the competence factor became applicable to tunnel construction. The relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its mechanical parameters was also clarified. "Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. Recent accelerated exploration efforts in southwest China have progressively quantified the vast phosphate resources in the Yunnan Province. To date, according to Chinese geologists, potential reserves in the province may be on the order of 4 Gt, which would equal the entire US reserve base. Development of this vast reserve is underway at two sites located 60-70 km southwest of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. The first, the Kunyang open-pit phosphate mine, produces an estimated 1.5 Mt/a of 22-30% P20,5. The other project located north of Kunyang is the Haikou mine, which the Chinese consider a possible 2.0-Mt/a operation. Because average ore grades run 3% less than those of Kunyang, beneficiation will be necessary. While the latter project has been initiated on a small scale, it is basically still on the drawing board. Brown and Root and the US Bureau of Mines are assisting on the project. Both operations are under the direction a regional administration which reports to the Ministry of Chemical Industries in Beijing. Combined production from both mines could represent some 70% of China's future productive capacity. Ore reserves in the region are estimated at 400 Mt by local officials. Geology of the District The phosphates are considered Cambrian in age and rest on a Precambrian dolomite. The Indian Ocean, Chinese geologists say, may have been the original source. The line of deposition stretches on a trend from Vietnam in the southwest, through Yunnan, into Sichuan Province to the northeast. Because the area is considered very stable from a geologic viewpoint, large quantities of phosphate have been deposited and large outcrops are known to occur everywhere in the province, according to Chinese sources. The Kunyang and Haikou ore bodies are thought to be two wings of an anticline with the former the southern portion, and the latter the northern portion. Each ore body strikes on an east-west axis. While there are many localized phosphate operations throughout the province, the Kunyang mine is the premium producer. Kunyang's Mining Development The Kunyang open-pit mine was opened in 1966. During the early years, operations were considered somewhat disorganized. Systematic mine planning and normal operations were not initiated until just two years ago, according to mine management. In 1979, Kunyang finally reached its design capacity of 1.5 Mt/a. The ore body consists of two phosphate beds separated by a band of shale. The top layer of phosphate varies from 4 to 8 m, averaging 6 m. The middle shale layer is 2 in. The third layer, which is not as rich as the top, is approximately 4 m. "Much of the copper being produced today uses heap leaching, where pure metal is extracted from the ore with a chemical process rather than smelting. This technique is deployed extensively in major copper producing areas including Chile, Peru and the southwestern United States.Copper ore is excavated from the ground, crushed and then spread in uniform layers on a pad. A slow trickle of sulfuric acid is distributed over the pile, where it percolates to the bottom and a collection point. The acid leaches out the copper, along with other minerals, which can be extracted chemically. This process can be used at large sites producing 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) and greater.Production on a massive scaleProduction at heap-leach sites is continuous and can operate on an enormous scale. The ore is fed into a crusher to break down the large pieces, and then it moves into an agglomerator to capture the fines and create more uniform particles. While in the agglomerator, the ore is mixed with acid for the first time, helping it to bind the fines into larger particles and starting the leaching process. The treated ore moves by conveyors to a stacker designed to spread it uniformly on the pad.The size of the operation comes into perspective by considering a typical pad measures 1.6-km (1-mile) long and 0.8-km (0.5-miles) wide. Working day after day, the stacker creates individual piles or modules on the pad, each 122 x 61 m (400 by 200 ft) and 3 m (10 ft) deep. When one module is filled, it moves across the pad to the next, filling the area in one continuous pile. A completed row of modules spanning the width of the pad is a cell. Once the entire pad is covered, the process begins again laying down another 3-m (10-ft) layer, and it continues until the entire pad reaches its height limit which can be several hundred feet.Once a new module is completed, technicians lay a network of plastic pipes over the surface in a pattern similar to agricultural drip irrigation installations. The diluted sulfuric acid, called raffinate, is pumped through the pipes so it can be distributed over the module, allowing the acid to soak through the ore and leach out copper as it percolates to the bottom. At the same time, approximately 35 to 45 percent of the acid is consumed by dissolving the calcite carrying the metal in the process. The raffinate reaching the bottom is now characterized as pregnant-leach solution (PLS) since it carries the copper the company is seeking to recover."

The 1,380 m (4,200 ft) long New Crystal Springs Bypass (Polhemus)Tunnel (NCSBT) will replace the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This tunnel project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.3 billion capital improvement program to repair and seismically upgrade their aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs and dams that provide drinking water to more than 2.4 million customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment and design, and the complex ground conditions of the Franciscan Mélange. Of particular interest is the challenge of tunneling with a possible downhill grade of 3%, a rigorous environmental process and incorporating the lessons learned from 1960s construction of the adjoining Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel.

The rougher flotation at Escondida consists of 80 cells of 100 m3 each, with injected air. Escondida has developed a system of automatic control of the rougher flotation using video cameras, which have been operating since 1997 for remote monitoring and manual control. Since 1999, an image processing software and a group of rules have allowed implementation of an expert system. To date, the expert system controls the superficial speed of each cell by adjusting the air flow and the froth depth of the flotation bank. Preliminary tests of the expert control on two of the eight rows gave 1.2% higher rougher recovery at a 92% degree of confidence. The proven benefits are already sufficient to move towards a complete plant implementation.
