The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

This work is a first-order study to assess the suitability of an organic acid lixiviant to extract rare earth elements (REE) from coal preparation fines refuse sourced from a Pennsylvania mine with a total REE of ~ 300 ppm. The extraction of REE using an organic acid, in this case 0.1Mcitric acid and 0.5Mtrisodium citrate solution, is compared against 0.5M(NH4)2SO4, 1MHCl, 1.2MH2SO4, and 0.5Methylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Ashing the coal waste material prior to leaching tests with the citrate solution nominally improved REE extraction. Buffered citrate solution recovered 7% of the total REE in the as-received Isabella Fines as compared to 11% in ashed samples, whereas (NH4)2SO4 extracted 5–6%, respectively. EDTA recovered up to 33%of the total REE, most likely due to the higher coordination chelate bond. Mineral acids, however, outperformed the organic acids on ashed material (16–52%REE recovery), suggesting that organic acids may not be a suitable competitive option for REE extraction from these types of feedstocks.

In the german hard-coal mining industry the mechanization of longwall faces and the machinery used for the extraction process have reached such an extent, that an extensive increase in productivity and face performance is not likely to be expected. At present, the greatest amount of man-shifts is needed for operations such as tunneling, transportation and haulage (fig. 1.). The most restrictive parameter, especially considering the possible ad- [ ] vance rate of faces, is the comparatively low advance rate achieved in drifting operations. Therefore improvements in productivity and advance rates of drifting operations will have considerable influence onto the extraction rate of the faces. The importance of drifting operations - and especially the so-called "conventional drifting by drilling and blasting" within the scope of long- term planning strategy of the german hard-coal mining industry is reflected by the development factor. This factor is given by the ratio: cubic meters of rock excavated in drifting per 1.000 tons saleable coal produced. In 1973, which is considered to be the beginning of the oil-crisis, this factor was determined to be 17.7 m3/ 1.000 tons sale- able coal.

The Stillwater pt-pd mine and flotation mill are located about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Billings in Stillwater county, M6ntana~ The pt-pd ore zone stretches about 43 km (27 miles), but varies in thickness from 0 to 6 meters (0 to 20 feet, but generally 3-6 feet) and dips 55-90,degrees from horizontal. The ore is hosted in basic, layered igneous rocks containing about 1% sulfide minerals which include chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor pyrite. The pt-Pd minerals are intimately associated with these sulfide minerals and are found as precious metal sulfides, tellurides, bismuthnides, and arsenides as well as native Pt metal. Approximately 90 different precious metal minerals have been found, but about 80% of the pd is in solid solution in the pentlandite. The ore assays about 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Ni, 6.2 g Pt/tonne (0.18 Troy ounce Pt/short ton (opt)), 21.3 g Pd/tonne (0.62 opt Pd), 0.21 g Au/tonne (0.006 opt Au), and 0.21 g Rh/tonne (0.006 opt Rh). The ratio of pd to Pt in the Stillwater ore and concentrates is about 3.5.

"Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

Sealaska Corporation, the Alaska Native Regional Corporation of Southeastern Alaska, was organized under the laws of the state of Alaska pursuant to the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Large areas of Sealaska's 630,000-acre (250,000 hectare [ha]) fee subsurface holdings are underlain by carbonate, and while much of this material is assumed to be common variety limestone and lesser dolomite, at least two areas in the Silurian Heceta Limestone contain high-quality limestone at tidewater. This limestone has many potential commercial uses. On northern Prince of Wales Island, about 90 miles (144 km) north-northwest of Ketchikan, resource development at Sealaska's Calder deposit has established a reserve of 13 mil- lion short tons (st) (12 million metric tonnes [mt]) of carbon- ate rock containing an average of greater than 98 percent CaC03, approximately 0.5 percent MgO, less than 0.5 per- cent Si02, and approximately 0.15 percent Fe203, with insolubles averaging less than 0.5 percent and an average Hunter Brightness of 92.07 for the -150 mesh grind (with a bright- ness cutoff of 90). The deposit is open at depth and to the south. Ultimate reserves will likely be several times those currently established. In 1998, Sealaska began mining the Calder deposit, with about 100,000 st (90,000 mt) produced, and also completed a marine terminal one half-mile (800 m) from the deposit. The terminal can load ships up to 680 feet (200 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. 0 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. On Dall Island at Breezy Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Ketchikan, Sealaska has identified a limestone reserve in excess of 150 million st (135 million mt) that (based on 18 surface samples distributed evenly over about a section of land) contains about 98 percent CaC03, and less than 0.5 percent MgO, 0.5 percent Si02, and 0.15 percent Fe203. Brightness of the Breezy Bay carbonate is considerably less than at Calder. Five samples of brighter material from Breezy Bay returned brightness analyses in the high 80s and low 90s; average brightness is probably below the mid- 80s. Sealaska has also identified a deposit containing more than 19 million st (17 million mt) of similar rock near View Cove, a few miles south of Breezy Bay.

The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Introduction Fire assaying is an ancient method of determining the amount of gold and silver in geological materials. Today's commercial, mining, school, and private fire assaying laboratories still use this basic assaying method. One of the primary reagents used to collect gold and silver from the ore is litharge (PbO), or lead oxide. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) and the Nevada Division of Occupational Safety and Health's (OSH) have a lead standard. It states that a person exposed to airborne lead at concentrations greater than 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) of air over an eight-hour period has gone beyond the permissible limit for health safety. It is not uncommon to get airborne lead concentrations of 1400 µg/m3 (40 µg per cu ft) in the flux/sampling area or 900 µg/m3 (25 µg per cu ft) around the gas/ electric furnaces during the fusion and cupelling phases. Therefore, any individual working in these areas for more than 30 days per year without proper protection is a likely candidate for lead poisoning. Lead In A Human Lead enters the body as a toxic substance by breathing it into the lungs and upper respiratory tract and by getting lead particles into the digestive system through ingestion. Smoking, eating, drinking, chewing tobacco and gum, or wiping a lead-contaminated hand across the mouth are all potential ways forgetting lead into the body. Lead taken in large quantities can actually kill a person in a matter of days. This is rare, however. The real hazard of lead overexposure is for the unsuspecting person who works in an unsafe lead environment for months or years. This individual can slowly receive damage, sometimes permanent, to the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, blood, gums, and reproductive system. Safe Blood-Lead Level The Lead Standard states that the maximum safe blood-lead level is 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) of whole blood. It recommends 30 µg/100 g (30 µg per 3.5 oz) if a person is of child-bearing age. People not working around lead products normally have a blood level of less than 10 µg/100 g (10 µg per 3.5 oz). A person not adequately protected can exceed 40 µg/100 g (40 µg per 3.5 oz) in a few weeks by fire assaying only 100 samples per day per week. Studies show that some individuals have developed lead-related diseases with blood-lead levels less than 80 µg/m3 (2.3 µg per cu ft). Lead Poisoning Symptoms There is a long list of symptoms associated with lead poisoning. The most common are: a prolonged, sweet, metallic taste in the mouth; loss of appetite; anxiety and irritability; weakness and dizziness; nausea and tremors; and insomnia. Preventive Measures Based on the lead standard, a number of preventive measures can be taken to ensure that fire assay laboratory personnel frequently exposed to lead are protected against overexposure. First, the actual lead concentration within the assaying area should be determined. In Nevada, one can contact the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health for assistance in monitoring any laboratory. The agency will also recommend ways to protect against lead. This agency does the monitoring and provides an educational class on lead safety. This type of agency can be found in other states. Commercial consulting firms are also available, but they are expensive. Regardless of the technique used to determine lead concentrations, it is most likely that the average fire assay area exceeds the 50 µg/m3 (1.4 µg per cu ft) lead concentration limit. This is considered unsafe.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

Lamco Joint Venture is operating a Dravo Pelletizing machine to produce pellets from the natural slimes of an earthy hematite ore. The grate area of the machine 3.3 x 106 m equal to 350 m2 (3800 sq. ft.) and the installed fan capacity is 8200 HP. The limiting factor for production is normally fan capacity. This means that the processing fans can not pull the additional air (i.e the additional calories or BTUs) through the bed which would be required for increased production. A way to increase production without major modifications is to supply the additional calories needed for increase production by adding coal to the pellet feed. After successful laboratory tests following method of coal addition has been chosen and the following results have been obtained. 1. The ground coal is added to the slurry prior to the filters and the rotary dryer. 2. By adding 0.6% coal, an increase of about 15% in production rate has been obtained. 3. No significant changes of metallurgical properties have been observed (i.e. tumbler index, compressive strength, ferrous iron content, reducibility, Linder degradation and swelling). 4. No unexpected operation problems have been experienced. The pellet discharge temperature increases and is the limit for how much production can be increased by coal addition without making plant modifications.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

The deformations resulting from excavation of very large openings are compared using two-dimensional F.E. continuum analyses and discontinuous physical models (20,000 discrete blocks). Both the joint orientations and the model horizontal stress levels were varied. Some models were dynamically loaded to simulate earthquakes (0.2-0.7 g). Model deformations were recorded using photogrammetry. The changes in deformation when increasing the simulated spans from 20 m to 50 m were of particular interest. High horizontal stress caused surface heave when joint orientations were favourable for arch stability. Joint orientations also determined whether the pillars between parallel openings were in a state of compression or tension. INTRODUCTION The engineering performance of large rock caverns has traditionally been learned from mining and hydro power projects, where the depth below surface is often many times greater than the span of the openings. Deformations measured in the walls and roofs of hydro power caverns generally range from about 5-50 mm, though there is a documented case where a wall moved in 126 mm (1), and another where the arch moved down 147 mm (2). In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.

ADECO, which stands for ?Analysis of Controlled Deformations in tunnels,? now allows us to fulfll Rabcewicz?s dream in any stress-strain condition. In order to achieve that dream and its consequent control over cost and schedule, however, NATM must be abandoned for the ADECO. The paper presents the basic concepts in the ADECO approach to design, construction and monitoring of tunnels together with some case histories, including: full face excavation for Cassia tunnel (width of 22 m, height of 14 m) in sands and silts under 5 m cover below an archeological area in Rome, Italy; Tartaguille tunnel (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly swelling and squeezing ground under 100 m cover where NATM led to catastrophic failure, France; and 80 km of tunnels (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly squeezing/swelling ground under 500 m cover for the high-speed railway line between Bologne and Florence, Italy (turnkey contract).

This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.
