Observations of calcite and opal in cavities in the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain indicate that: 1) seeps are not regularly spaced in underground workings and not all fractures sustain flow, 2) many cavities represent sites of seepage that have remained stable for millions of years, 3) typically there is no evidence (such as dripstone) for seepage dripping into cavities from their ceilings, and 4) seepage is not likely to be greater than about 1 liter of water per year (per 5-m-long drift) based on calcite abundances observed in the ESF. This estimate of seepage is significantly lower than that used for performance assessment.

INTRODUCTION LKAB was formed at the turn of the century when the railways between the ore fields and harbors were built. The mines are situated north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest mine, with a pro¬duction capacity of approximately 30 Mt/a. Malm¬berget has a capacity of about 12 Mt/ a. Both are under¬ground mines. Svappavaara, the only opencast mine currently in operation, has a capacity of about 4.5 Mt/a. The ore harbors are at Narvik for the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines and at Lulea for the Malmberget mine (see Fig. 1). Production in the form of finished products is shown in Fig. 2a, b, c, and d. Due to poor ore markets in re¬cent years, production and shipments have been cut back, but there was a positive swing in 1978. LKAB has been 96% state-owned since 1957. In addition to the iron mines in northern Sweden, LKAB has subsidiaries in central Sweden which produce sulfide ores, quartz sand, and uranium (Fig. 3). The mining methods employed are opencast bench stoping at Svappavaara and sublevel caving at Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. GEOLOGY The Kiirunavaara ore body is 4000 m long and av¬erages about 90 m wide, with variations in width from a few meters to around 150 m. The ore has been ex¬plored by deep drilling down to about 1000 m, but mag¬netic measurements indicate a depth of at least 1500 m. The Kiirunavaara ore is oriented in a north-northeasterly direction with a number of ores in the boundaries be¬tween the wall rock types. The ore in Kiirunavaara is mainly a fine-grained magnetite with a varying content of fine-grained apatite. The apatite content of the ore decreases with increasing depth. The other ores are all apatite-bearing and a couple are hematite ores (Fig. 4a, b). The ores are sedimentary, tilted, and tectonically de¬formed. They have a lateral dip of 0.87 to 1.2 rad (50 to 70°). The contacts between ore and wall rock are distinct and sharp, but both the hanging wall and the footwall are brecciated and impregnated with magnetite. The footwall of the Kiirunavaara ore consists of syenite porphyry with a low quartz content and rela¬tively good strength; the hanging wall consists of quartz porphyry. Both types are known as Kiruna porphyries. The ore at the boundary with the hanging wall is often rich in kaolin. There are a few veins of syenite porphyry running through the ore, which has a few major faults (Fig. 4c, d). There are two sharply delineated ore grades in Kiirunavaara: low phosphorus ore with less than 0.1 % phosphorus (about one-third of the ore) and high phos¬phorus ore with greater than 0.5% phosphorus. The iron content is 67% in the low phosphorus ore and 60% in the high phosphorus ore. These ore types are sold as different grades and so are kept separate during mining. MINING AT KIIRUNAVAARA The Kiirunavaara and Luossavaara ores were first mined using opencast bench stoping in 1902. In the UK, powered supports are normally salvaged from longwall faces on completion of production, for reuse on the next unit. Where a spare set of supports are held, the salvaged supports are often stored in underground roadways awaiting installation. One mine in the UK extracts a 5m section, and holds two sets of 2x950t powered supports, each weighing approx. 35t and having closed dimensions of 8m long, 2.5 high and 1.75m wide. As the first set would not be required for over 12 months, and because of space limitations below ground, it was decided that the supports would be left in situ, the district sealed, and reopened at a later date for support salvage. The paper described the decision making process, and the inertisation of the sealed district utilising nitrogen generated on the mine surface and piped to the point of use. The re-entry and re-ventilation of the district are also described. The paper then goes on to describe in more detail the discovery of a spontaneous combustion event that occurred in the waste behind the powered supports, and its treatment and control using extra nitrogen brought to the mine by tanker and introduced at strategic locations along the faceline via boreholes, leading to a successful salvage and re-sealing.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from deep underground mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist. A 50-m-high pilot-scale model was constructed and tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a U-tube pipeline from the mine level to the surface with the assistance of compressed air. A prototype screw feeder is used to continuously compact and inject 5-cm or less run-of-mine coal into a pressurized 20-cm-diam pipeline. Production rates up to 40 metric tph at an airflow of 1.5 m3/min were achieved with the model, and coal size degradation was relatively minor. Modifications are in progress to achieve 100 tph at an airflow of 2.8 standard m3/min injected into the riser pipe. Pilot-scale results indicate that an air-lift hydrohoist system is a feasible, cost-effective alternative to conventional skip hoisting that can be installed in existing shafts or surface-drilled holes closer to the face area. Air-lift hydrohoisting offers advantages of infinitely adjustable slurry flow rates, reduced pressure at the point of coal injection, and flexible design that can be combined with hydraulic pumping. Proposed design changes are discussed for coal transport, mine layouts, ventilation, fire control, and escapeways using this system.

INTRODUCTION Uranium production in Saskatchewan commenced in 1953 at the Eldorado Nuclear Mine in the Beaverlodge area of North Saskatchewan, followed over the next few years by nineteen other smaller mining operations. Production rose from 453 600 to 2 721 600 kg per annum by 1958. Over supply and the closure of the U.S. market to Canadian uranium led to an equally rapid decline to an annual production which varied from 453 600 to 907 200 kg during the years 1964 to 1976. As the market strengthened there was a resurgence of the Saskatchewan industry and production from one underground and two open pit mines reached 2 809 000 kg in 1980 for a return of 232 000 000 dollars (Table 1). [ ] Future output will be increased by a potential 4 536 000 kg from the Key Lake mine now under construction and scheduled to commence production in 1983. Three other projects are in an advanced stage of planning and are currently in the regulatory review process. Several other prospects are being evaluated. Figure 1 shows the location of uranium mines in Saskatchewan and table 2 illustrates the present status of uranium mines and deposits in Saskatchewan. At present, 1400 workers are employed directly by the uranium mining industry. Saskatchewan has diverse mining conditions ranging from the underground mine of Eldorado Nuclear Limited 1870 m deep with a low grade ore deposit averaging from 0.17-0.20% with extraction by carbonate leaching through an open pit operated by Gulf Minerals with a moderate depth of 110 m and 0.37-0.5% grade to the shallow open pit of Cluff Mining 30 m deep with a very high average ore grade of 7.0%. Extraction at both open pits utilizes acid leach extraction processes, the latter after gravimetric separation. Key Lake mining has commenced development of the next mine to come into production which will have two open pits to a depth of 80 and 175 m with an average 3% grade to be followed by the deep open pit of Canada Wide Mines Ltd. to a depth of 205 m with average grade of 1.5%. One existing mine will transfer its operation from the present open pit to another of slightly higher average grade. From the Saskatchewan point of view, these different operating conditions present varied problems associated with occupational health and safety and concomitant solutions to reducing worker exposure to radiation. REGULATION OF URANIUM MINES In 1946, the Government of Canada enacted the Atomic Energy Control Act which established the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) and vested in that board powers to regulate all aspects of uranium mining. In the early years, the AECB relied heavily on provincial occupational health and safety agencies for the surveillance of uranium mining and milling operations, particularly with regard to "conventional" occupational health and safety, the AECB having at the time no specific regulations covering the mining industry. There has been considerable dialogue between federal and provincial governments since, traditionally, occupational health and safety is a provincial jurisdiction. Saskatchewan is strongly opposed to the intrusion of the federal government into the provincial domain, particularly as there is little justification for a federal presence in occupational health and safety in uranium mining and milling. The province does, however, accept the need for federal involvement in certain aspects of the regulation of nuclear industry, for example, international sales, research and security of reserves for domestic use.

In 1900, placer gold was discovered on the beach of Nome, AK on the southern coastline of Alaska's Seward Peninsula (Garnett, 1991). The site is about 800 km (500 miles) from Anchorage. Nome is connected to Anchorage only by air (daily) and by sea (summer). Total onshore placer gold production from Nome's immediate vicinity was more than 155.5 t (5 million oz). Alaska Gold Co, has continued to produce gold onshore with, until recently, two bucketladder dredges, each of 255-L (9-cu ft) bucket capacity. Small-scale marine dredging for gold has been at- tempted several times this century (Garnett, 1991). Western Gold Exploration and Mining Co. Ltd. Partnership (WestGold) is the only company to have been successful in achieving a significant offshore production. The Nome bucketladder-dredging operation from 1986 to 1990 constituted a unique marine-mining experience in the United States. \Inspiration Gold Inc., WestGold's predecessor, acquired six offshore leases in 1985. The total lease area of 87 km2 (21,551 acres) extended from the coastline to the 4.8-km (3-mile) offshore limit (Fig. 1). Those leases al- ready had been partially explored. Drilling was conducted off the shorefast winter sea ice. Therefore, it was rarely more than 1.6 km (1 mile) from the shore or in water deeper than about 9 m (30 ft). In 1985, estimated reserves comprised of a 5-m (17-ft) vertical thickness of sediments below 6.3 m (20 ft) of water. This meant a mean digging depth below the mean sea level (msl) of 11.3 m (37 ft). It was thought that the offshore Nome deposit possessed a feature that is common with many terrestrial gold placers - the secret of profitable exploitation of the marine deposit lay in maximizing the dredge throughput to minimize the unit costs. The inability of the project to withstand the prohibitively high cost of a new dredge was recognized. So Inspiration Gold purchased a used unit. This was the world's largest ocean- going bucketladder dredge (Fig. 2). Binzn was an 850-L (30 cu ft) bucket capacity dredge that was lying idle in Singapore. Originally constructed in the Jurong shipyard of Singapore in 1979, Bima was designed by Mining and Transport Engineering, a subsidiary of IHC Holland. Billiton Marine used the dredge for tin production at Pulau Tujuh in Indonesia (Dieperink, 1978) before it was laid up in mid-1985. Bima underwent a nine-week refit before departing Singapore on June 4,1986, with 800-t (880-st ) of deck cargo. It was dry-towed for 32 days to Alaska. A slower, less expensive, wet-tow at the authorized 5.5 kmthr (3 knots/hour) would have delayed the dredge's arrival in Alaska untl almost the onset of winter. The 13,000-km (8,100-mile) voyage was made on the deck of Smit Lloyd's "Giant-4" submersible barge towed by its 7.8- MW (10,500-hp) tugboat. The first season's dredging revealed several major shortcomings in Bima. Further repairs and modifications were undertaken at Tacoma, WA. The dredge returned to Nome for the June start of the 1987 summer dredging season. The refitted Bima worked offshore at Nome from 1987 to 1990. It produced 3.67 t (118,078 oz) of gold at an average recovered grade of 824 mg/m3 (0.0204 oz/cu yd). In 1991, the dredge was dismantled and sold.

INTRODUCTION During the last few years, several new ventilation developments have attracted the interest of mining engi¬neers. Some of these developments are applicable pri¬marily to hard-rock mining, while others are more applicable to coal mining. STOPPINGS Parachute Stopping The parachute stopping is a new type of quick-erect stopping that is intended for temporary use in hard-rock mines (Kissell, Thimons, and Vinson, 1975). As shown in Fig. 1, the stopping is shaped very much like an ordinary parachute, with a canopy of impermeable fabric that is sewn to regularly spaced straps running to a common point. To erect the stopping, the straps are attached to a fixed anchor point such as a roof bolt, and the edge of the canopy is lifted into the moving air¬stream. The airstream pops the parachute canopy into place, and the differential air pressure across the stop¬ping holds it in place, forcing the fabric against the walls, roof, and floor of the mine opening. The principal advantage of the parachute stopping is that it requires only a few minutes to install, making it a great time-saver for emergency use or for day-to¬day changes in ventilation during the production cycle. However, the parachute stopping does require some minimum air velocity to lift it and some minimum differential pressure to hold it in place. For a fabric weighing 0.27 kg/ m2 (8.0 oz per sq yd), the minimum air velocity is about 0.5 m/s (100 fpm), and the mini¬mum differential pressure is about 0.05 kPa [0.2 in. water gage (WG) ]. There is always some air leakage around the stop¬ping, mainly depending upon the extent to which pipes or other obstructions encumber the airway and prevent good sealing. Leakage of a few cubic meters per second (a few thousand cubic feet per minute) can be expected, unless foam is used to improve the seal at the edges of the canopy. Quick-Fix Blowout Stopping The quick-fix blowout stopping is a variation of the parachute stopping (Thimons and Kissell, 1976), and it is used in the proximity of blasting operations. This type of stopping is designed to be blown out easily by the blast forces, and it may be reinstalled quickly and easily. The long high-strength straps of the parachute stopping are replaced by groups of short straps that tear easily. These straps are attached at six equally spaced locations around the perimeter of the canopy. To erect the stopping, one strap of each of the six groups is fastened to the mine wall, roof, and floor by using spads, by setting pins with a powder-actuated gun, or by tying the straps to some firm anchor point. Once the straps have been attached, the differential air pressure across the stopping, which must be at least 0.025 kPa (0.1 in. WG), forces the stopping perimeter against the mine walls, thus creating the air seal. It is the self-sealing feature of this stopping that makes it a significant time-saver. Only a few attachment points are needed; in many cases, four attachment points are sufficient, since the stopping naturally tends to form a seal with the airway surfaces. When nearby produc¬tion blasting exerts excessive forces on the stopping, one or more of the straps tears away from its attachment point, protecting the stronger canopy from damage. Damage-Resistant Brattice The damage-resistant brattice is a stopping that is designed for use in mines such as salt and limestone mines where the differential pressures are low and the roof is relatively flat. As shown in Fig. 2, the damage-resistant brattice consists of a series of brattice panels that are hung vertically and joined by Velcro® connections. When the brattice is subjected to strong blast forces, the Velcro® connection peels apart and allows the panels to open without incurring damage. The Velcro® connections can be resealed by hand within a matter of minutes. Such damage-resistant brattices have withstood the blast effects of 318 kg (700 lb) of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosive detonated as close as 91 m (300 ft) from the brattice. Ordinary brattice cloth is used for the panels, with a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® hooks sewn along one edge of the length, and a 51-mm (2-in.) wide strip of Velcro® pile sewn along the other edge. Both the hooks and the pile are sewn onto the same side of the brattice cloth. The resulting Velcro® seal formed be¬tween adjacent panels is perpendicular to the brattice itself, and the leading edge of the seal can be directed either toward or away from the blast forces; the brattice works equally well in either case. To hang the brattice, panels of brattice cloth about 0.9 m (3 ft) longer than the height of the airway are cut from a 1.8-m (6-ft) wide roll. The additional 0.9 m (3 ft) of brattice cloth allows 0.3 m (1 ft) for attachment to the roof by means of a board, with 0.6 m (2 ft) for forming a good air seal at the floor. Each brattice panel is wrapped once or twice around a 51 X 102 mm (2 X 4 in.) or 25 X 76 mm (1 X 3 in.) mounting board that is 254 to 305 mm (10 to 12 in.) shorter than the width of the panel. Mina Maria is a high-grade, underground copper mine located in the Cananea district of Sonora, Mexico. The ore body is a massive sulfide breccia located in mountainous terrain. A major highway and an electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface ore body. The mine is operated by Minera Maria SA de CV, a joint venture company that is 51 % owned by Empresas Frisco SA de CV and 49% by Cominco Resources International Ltd. Empresas Frisco is the operating partner. Production began in October 1990. The mining method used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner and a single-boom, hydraulic jumbo mine the ore. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation. The Maria deposit is located about 40 km (25 miles) south of the Sonora-Arizona border and 11km (7 miles) northwest the city of Cananea and the Cananea Mine. The mine portal, at an elevation of 1780m (5840 ft), is on the east side of an important drainage divide. The mill site is situated about 800 m (2625 ft) northwest of the mine on the northwest side of the drainage divide where the drainage is more favorable. Its elevation is 1860 m (6100 ft) (Fig. 1).

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

Laboratory tests were conducted in a full-scale continuous miner test gallery to evaluate resulting dust levels for changes in face airflow, spray water quantity and pressure, and mining height. The minimum and maximum values tested for each parameter were as follows: airflows between 1.42 and 6.14 m3/sec, water flows between 56.8 and 132.5 lpm, nozzles pressures between 413 and 1379 kPa, and mining heights between 1.52 and 2.74 m. Each of these parameters were evaluated for four common spray system designs. Respirable dust samples were collected in the operator's cab on the miner and in the immediate return. Second-order polynomial models were used to represent expected dust levels and multiple stepwise regression was used to identify significant control parameters for inclusion in the models. Separate models were developed for dust levels at the operator and return locations and for each individual spray system. Interaction between control parameters and curvature effects were found in most models. The analysis indicated that at the operator location, airflow and mining height had the most significant impact on respirable dust levels. In the return, airflow and water pressure were typically the most significant parameters. The models developed for each spray system design can be used by mine operators to guide application of control parameters for a variety of operating conditions and mining heights.

The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

During the past few years, the first stage of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, (WIPP) which consists of an exploratory shaft, a ventilation shaft, shaft stations, access drifts and test rooms, has been under construction. Construction of the first stage is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1983. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is constructing the WIPP facility to demonstrate the feasibility of disposing of defense-related nuclear waste in the bedded salt deposits of the Delaware Basin near Carlsbad, N.M. The project promises to be a proving ground for underground nuclear waste storage facility design and construction. The completed underground plant will extend over an area of 647,500 m2 (160 acres), and 1,360,500 metric tons (1,500,000 tons) of salt will be excavated. The first stage of the project, the Site and Preliminary Design Validation (SPDV) Program, provides for full-scale construction of the major components of the underground facility. Shaft construction and underground development are described. Rock bolt installation is performed as required for roof control. Geotechnical instrumentation is installed to monitor the behavior of underground openings. Direct observation of the constructed shafts, shaft stations, and underground openings is expected to confirm the adequacy of the underground design and allow full-scale construction of the first U.S. underground nuclear waste storage facility to proceed.

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

The Lomas Bayas copper property is located93 km (58 miles) east of Antofagasta, Region II, Chile (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1880. The deposit produced intermittently until 1992. Production at Lomas Bayas took place in high-grade veins and breccias mined underground. During 1991, Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos SA (EMMB) optioned the property from Compania Doña Ada SA. Doña Ada maintained the right to continue mining the ores by open-pit and block-caving methods and hauling the ore to its plant located60 km (37 miles) to the north. EMMB conducted exploration and column test programs. On May 9, 1994, Compania Minera Gibraltar Ltda.(CMGL) signed a purchase option agreement to acquire the Lomas Bayas property. CMGL conducted 8,612 m(9,490 ft) of reverse-circulation drilling, 2,028 m (6,650ft) of diamond drilling, a series of metallurgical tests and geologic mapping. The company then decided to exercise its purchase option.

The Meadow River No. 1 Preparation Plant, owned by Sewell Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Pittston Company, was commissioned in the spring of 1974. The plant is designed to process 400 TPH of 5" x 0 raw coal. The 5" x 114'l fraction is processed in a Heavy Medium Vessel with the 114 x 28M reporting to Deister Tables for cleaning. The 28M x 0 fraction is cleaned in flotation cells, with the froth going to clean coal vacuum filters and the tailings to a static thickener where the underflow is reclaimed on Refuse Filters prior to disposal. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the noise exposure in that particular environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: [ ]

The structure of a mine ventilation network (M.V.N.) can be represented graphically using either the mine plan (map) itself or a number of other types of diagrams. In the U.S., the two most common approaches are the line and the schematic diagrams (see Figures 1 and 2). The purpose of this paper is to introduce another type of diagram, called the canonical diagram (6). The method of M.V.N. representation which uses canonical diagrams is used extensively in Europe, and especially in Poland, where it was developed. The canonical diagram is a noncalibrated topological image of a ventilation system. It gives a simple representation of the ventilation network, allows for the classification of currents within it and enables rapid computer analysis and computation, as well as the representation of the results. It is especially useful in studying and controlling the air flow, and it may be a life saving tool in conducting rescue operations during and after mine fires.

From some of the largest tunnel projects in the some of the most vibrant cities, to smaller projects in remote corners of the globe, the Robbins Co. announced two tunneling projects in which its tunnel boring machines will be used. Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines undercut Downtown Zhengzhou. Zhengzhou, a city of 7 million people, is set to become a crossroads for rail commerce in China. The country?s future main routes, traveling between Beijing and Guangzhou (North-South), and between Xuzhou and Lanzhou (East-West), will intersect in the city. The plan includes up to four rail lines in Zhengzhou itself, which will eventually link up to the national lines. Excavation of Zhengzhou Metro?s new Line 1 tunnels began on Sept. 28, 2010, when the first of two 6.3-m (20.7-ft) diameter Robbins earth pressure balance (EPB) machines was launched from a 16-m- (52-ft-) deep shaft.

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means of controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers built a unique physical model called the longwall instrumented aerodynamic model (LIAM). The LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel. It has an 8.94 by 4.88 m (29 by 16 ft) footprint with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob and mining machinery, and scaled to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.
