The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth's main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies' are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.

"The city of Naples has one of the most ancient traditions of tunneling in the world, since Roman age until today. This was due to the softness of volcanic rock covering most of the city surface, this determined in centuries the excavation of many connected cavities, today still accessible. The building of metro lines promoted industrial tunneling construction: TBM, Raise Boring Machine, Vertical Shaft Machine and freezing technologies played a decisive role facing water pressure near the sea. MNspa is an advanced constructor with two lines built in parallel, mainly underwater. The planning of this infrastructure has been upgraded with the projects of international architects from all Europe, with installation of art masterpieces in station spaces while archeological excavations revealed artifacts since Paleolithic. The city expects to give a new image of the urban landscapes within the completion of all stations and consequent rehabilitation of interiors and external city spaces. A case study of Municipio square station, is chosen to explain the relevance of archaeological research in improving and developing the projects of Line 1 stations. In these pages, it will be explained how the engineering process required to deal with Art, Architecture and Archaeology to finally realize an extended urban renovation of Naples. 1 CITYSCAPE 1.1 Introducing the geological history of Naples In the evolution of the city, capital of the Magna Graecia and of consequent kingdoms, a new layer of buildings was added over the foundations of demolished walls of the precedent domination period: from the top of the Bourbons layer (the most common scenery of the city since 1734) to the Aragonese layer found just underneath it; then below stands the Angiovin city, which in turn is built above the Swabian traces; underneath the ancient traces of the Byzantine age are found just above the extended Latin age layer. The most ancient settlement, known as Parthenope, dates back to 1500 b.C. It sits below the Greeks remains of the city of Palepolis, which had been rebuilt under the name of Neapolis by Romans."

Uranium associated with phosphate deposits has been the subject of numerous investigations (1-8). In the land-pebble phosphate deposits of central Florida, uranium is found in the phosphate matrix (ore) and in the leached zone between the over-burden and matrix (1). Between 0.01 to 0.02 percent uranium is found in the leached zone, which consists of apatite and aluminum phosphate minerals (crandallite, wavellite, millisite) (Z). The primary phosphate mineral in the matrix is apatite, and the 0.005 to 0.01 percent uranium typically found in the matrix is associated with this mineral (1). It is generally believed that uranium substitutes for calcium in the apatite structure (3-5). Clay and quartz phases associated with phosphate deposits contain little uranium (1, 6), and no descrete uranium minerals have been detected in these deposits (4). A typical phosphate matrix consists of quartz, slimes (-150 mesh material) and recoverable phosphate. When the matrix is beneficiated, partition of uranium and radium takes place (9, 10). Although considerable data exists on how uranium is distributed in the phosphate deposits, no systematic study has recently been reported on the distribution of uranium during phosphate rock beneficiation. The purpose of this study was to determine how uranium is distributed in the various strata which comprise the overall land-pebble phosphate deposits, as well as how the uranium is redistributed during beneficiation of phosphate matrix. To obtain this information studies were carried out on matrix samples obtained from three different mines in central Florida. Using pilot-plant scale beneficiation, an analysis was performed on how uranium in the matrix is distributed among the pebble fractions, flotation concentrates, flotation tails, and slimes. The uranium level profile for an active mining area was also obtained. Also, since thousands of acres of slime ponds may someday become a source of both phosphate and uranium, a depth versus uranium content profile was determined for an inactive slime pond.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. Assuming, as did Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson, that their numerical model is an accurate predictor, it is clear that the modification incorporated in equation (2) improves the accuracy of preliminary estimates of ground water flow to a pit.[ ] References Jacob, C.E and Lohman. An advanced coal preparation plant has been built at Homer City, Pennsylvania, by Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of General Public Utilities Corporation, and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, as an alternative to utilizing flue gas desulfurization technology to meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources air quality emission regulations of 4.0 lb S02/106BTU for the two (2) existing coal-fired generating station Units No. 1 and No. 2, and a 1.2 lb S02/106BTU for the new Unit No. 3. The coal preparation plant is designed to process 5,200,000 tons of run of the mine coal annually and has a design capability to process 1,200 tons per hour via two (2) equal capacity 600 tons per hour preparation circuits.- The plant is designed to produce multi-product coal streams consisting of a middling product of medium ash and medium sulphur content, which is environmentally compatible to support operation of the two (2) existing generating Units I and 2, and a deep cleaned, low ash, low sulphur coal product capable of environmentally supporting the ambient air quality requirements of the new Unit 3 generating facility. The waste product from the process consists of high ash, high sulphur reject material. The process has the acronym MCCS (Multi-Stream Coal Cleaning System).

Cyanidation of gold and silver ores by conventional mining and milling techniques has been practiced for over a century. During the past decade, heap leaching has emerged as a viable process for treating certain gold and silver ores. (1) The rapid development of heap leaching for gold and silver ores is largely a result of lower capital and operating costs and faster start-up time than that offered by conventional mining and milling. In general, these features make heap leaching an ideal approach for exploiting either small or large low-grade disseminated deposits of gold and silver considered to be uneconomic by conventional methods. The development of heap leaching technology has evolved from the operations initiated in the western United States. The basic components of a typical heap leaching operation are depicted in Figure 1. Run-of-mine or crushed ore (usually 1 to 5 ppm gold) is delivered to specifically prepared impervious pads. Alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the surface of the heap and allowed to percolate through the heap (typically 10-30 ft high). Pregnant leach solution which drains from the heap is collected and stored in tanks of sufficient size or in collection reservoirs. Gold and silver are recovered from the pregnant solution and the barren solution is recirculated back to the heaps after reagent make-up.

Previous studies on blast fumes (carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide) clearance and workplace reentry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases trapped in the muck pile. The currently available models for calculating the mine reentry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However, recent studies reported that as much as 60 to 70% [1–5] of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting could remain trapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muck pile. Trapped fumes are slowly released [1–5], and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the loading and transportation of the muck pile. In this study, mathematical models were developed using computational fluid dynamics to understand the behavior of the trapped fumes and their effect on mine reentry time. The three scenarios considered for this study include (i) gas emission source with no muck pile volume, (ii) gas emission source with non-porous muck pile volume, and (iii) gas emission source with porous muck pile volume. The estimated reentry times in all three scenarios were compared to see how porous media affects dilution time. It was observed that scenario 3, with fumes trapped in the muck pile, took a significantly longer clearance time (more than double) as compared to scenarios 1 and 2.

Brannerite, UTi2O6, is the most common of the refractory uranium minerals and requires leaching under intense conditions to effectively extract the uranium contained within. Brannerite is often found together with apatite in metasomatic uranium deposits. Apatite and other phosphate gangue minerals can inhibit uranium leaching by generating phosphate ions which interfere with the reactions between acidic ferric sulphate and uranium minerals. As part of a detailed fundamental study on the leaching reaction mechanisms for brannerite, tests under a range of selected leach conditions were carried out with the addition of 10 g/L fluorapatite with the goal of identifying conditions where the negative effects of phosphate are reduced. Leaching was carried out for 5 hours with 0.05 mol/L Fe3+ as Fe2(SO4)3 with 0.25–1.00 mol/L H2SO4 and at temperatures between 25 and 96 °C. A single test was performed with 0.05 mol/L Fe3+ as FeCl3 and 1.00 mol/L HCl. In the sulphate system, the effect of phosphate was weakest at the highest acid concentration (1.00 mol/L H2SO4). In the chloride system, phosphate did not suppress uranium extraction, suggesting that HCl leaching could be a viable alternative for the leaching of high-phosphate refractory uranium ores.

I gratefully acknowledge the help of a number of American and Canadian geologists, in both federal surveys and in private firms, who took the time to discuss this problem with me. Hans Landsberg and Bruce Netschert also followed the study with interest and encouragement. In their 1961 monograph, THE FUTURE SUPPLY OF THE MAJOR METALS, Bruce Netschert and Hans Landsberg noted that identified potential resources (that is, known but submarginal resources) of lead and zinc were much lower relative to reserves (that is, known and supermarginal resources) than was the same ratio for other metals.1/ Put another way, it seemed that for such metals as iron, manganese, copper, and aluminum, slightly more favorable economic conditions or modest advances in technology would greatly increase reserves by permitting the exploitation of vest quantities of leaner or deeper or otherwise less valuable mineral deposits. But for lead and zinc, Netschert and Landsberg concluded that either: "(1) there is relatively little material below present cutoff grades; [or] (2) such material exists, but for some reason there are no data.? 2/ This situation, which they called "the lead-zinc anomaly" has been subsequently discussed by other authors. The purpose of this paper is to carry the discussion further by examining the evidence in favor of (1) and (2) and by advancing a third alternative.

A review and comparison is made of the circuitry utilized for dc crane control systems. Anti-parallel three phase full wave thyristor bridges for dc motor reversing and speed control are compared with a single three phase full wave thyristor bridge for speed control and either contactor or static switching for reversing control to obtain complete four quadrant operation for crane material handling. In recent years the Harnischfeger Corporation has developed a solid state adjustable voltage control system to control the speed and direction of dc motors for crane applications and handling materia1.1 Shunt wound dc motors are utilized and speed is controlled in the motor base speed operating region at constant torque by a thyristor, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), adjust- able armature voltage supply. The three phase thyristor bridge is the power controlling element of the dc adjustable voltage control. ELECTROTORQUE is the Harnischfeger Corporation registered trade name for this type of drive system. By controlling the gating signals or firing pulses to the thyristor bridge SCR's the dc output voltage can be varied over a wide range. This range is limited only by the magnitude of the ac applied voltage. To obtain operation of the motor in both directions two thristor bridges are connected in an anti-parallel arrangement. A typical schematic for two anti-parallel connected three phase SCR bridges is shown in Figure 1.

Evaporite rocks, salts of the more soluble ions in seawater, are deposited when seawater becomes concentrated by excess evaporation in marginal basins having restricted circulation with the open sea. The simple conceptual model of an evaporite basin (Figure 1) has a single inlet connecting the basin to the open ocean, the restriction to open circulation being caused by a bar or reef near the mouth of the inlet. As the oceanic water flows from the inlet into the basin it tends to form a thin layer of brine that spreads out over the surface of the basin brine, and as it does so, the salt concentration In the surface layer gradually increases owing to continued evaporation of the water. When the solubility products of the salts in the surface layer are exceeded, the salts precipitate and settle to the bottom of the basin, The order of precipitation follows their order of least solubility. Normally the carbonates separate first, followed by the sulfates and chlorides and the more complex double salts. In nature there is considerable overlap in their ranges of precipitation. The water flow in the basin, also shown schematically in Figure 1, diverges from the inlet essentially perpendicular to the lines of' equal salinity in the surface brine. The distribution of salts deposited in such a model will parallel the isosalinity lines, being arcuate and concave toward the inlet (1)

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of centimeter size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of millimeter size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85 percent of copper for sample A could be recovered at 65 percent of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual-energy X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Pilot-scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31 percent rejection of a 0.08 percent Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90 percent copper.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.

The Bureau of Mines conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from fine-particle wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate ore by leaching dried wastes using a H2SO4-methanol mixture. Although phosphatic clay waste contains up to a third of the phosphate originally present in the ore, recovery of these values represents a significant challenge due to the fine grain size of the material, the particles averaging less than one micrometer in diameter. Waste samples obtained from two Florida producers yielded phosphate extractions of 71 and 84 pct, respectively, when leached under ambient conditions and at a stoichiometric acid ratio of 1.4:l. Elevated temperatures did not improve the amount of phosphate extracted. Undesirable A12O3, Fe2O3, and PlgO impurities were largely rejected; higher grade wastes gave acids that meet established industry impurity standards and lower grade samples yielded acids that marginally fell short of the standard. Separation of the crude acids from the insoluble residues was accomplished via vacuum filtration through either filter paper or commercial filter cloths. Both filtration rates and solids retention were improved by the addition of 0.5 lb/ton of poly(viny1 acetate) (PVAc) or poly(ethy1ene oxide) (PEO) to the methanol-acid slurries. These results show potential for substantially increasing the reserves of an important domestic resource.

Just south of the L'Enfant Station in Seventh Street, the WMATA system splits into two branches, each comprising twin single-track soft ground tunnels. Immediately at the beginning of the section, Interstate Route 95 crosses transversely over the alignment in open cut, removing most of the cover over the tunnels. Seventh Street spans I-95 on a bridge whose abutments and pier also cross transversely over the four tunnels, with their footings as little as 7 feet above the tunnel crown (Figure 1). Soil investigations revealed that the tunnels would have to be driven through mixed face, with a clay invert and a waterlogged sand crown. Thus, there was a good chance that the roof would fall in, leaving 1-95 and the Seventh Street Bridge in a crater. Since there was no roof that could be counted on, these were figuratively (and potentially truly) Washington Metro's Topless Tunnels (Figures 2 and 3). DESIGN ALTERNATIVES Faced with this situation, the designers considered several options, including temporary detours that would permit demolition of the bridge and building tunnels under the 1-95 Freeway by cut-and-cover methods. They also investigated structural underpinning of the bridge and freeway pavement, and strengthening the bridge abutments and center pier by post-tensioning to enable them to span over any subsidence trough.

INTRODUCTION On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. These Amendments cover many aspects of air pollution control. The provisions which seek to control emissions of "air toxics" may, however, be the most far-reaching and will potentially have the greatest effect on American industry. The Administration has estimated that by the year 2005 industry will be spending $6.7 billion per year on air toxics control. Meanwhile, the Business Round Table has estimated that the price will be far higher, up to $62 billion per year, depending on how EPA and the States implement the program. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Any "major" source of emissions of 189 air toxics will be required to install "MACT." The translation of this statement requires some definitions: •MAJOR SOURCE - A facility (a contiguous property under single ownership and control) which has actual emissions of 10 tons or more per year of any single one of the air toxics or 25 tons per year of any combination of air toxics. •AIR TOXICS - Congress has provided a list of the 189 chemicals on this list. Those that may be important to the mining industry are shown on Table 1. This list can be changed by petition or by EPA. •MACT - Maximum Achievable Control Technology is to be defined by EPA for each industrial source category. EPA says there are about 400 categories. The Act defines MACT as: "the average emission limit achieved by the best performing 12% of the existing sources ... for categories with 30 sources or more" or, "the average emission limitation achieved by the best performing 5 sources in the category." Single-row bench blasts at a reduced scale in the field were used to study the effects of delay time on fragmentation. Nine shots with a spacing of 21 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 1.4) and nine shots with a spacing of 30 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 2.0) were completely screened to determine particle size distributions. Delay intervals between holes ranged from 0 to 45 msec, corresponding to effective delay intervals ranging from 0 to 36 msec per foot of burden. Each shot was instrumented with strain and pressure gages to measure in situ blast dynamics and to evaluate interactions between blastholes. Finer overall fragmentation was produced for shots with delay intervals between 1 and 17 msec per foot of burden. Only for shots within this optimum delay range was it observed that the strains induced by stress waves constructively interacted with strains induced by gas pres- sure from an earlier detonated hole. Coarsest fragmentation resulted at delay intervals less than 1 msec/ft, where stress waves from each hole were observed to interact destructively, and at delay intervals greater than 24 msec/ft, where no inter- action between holes was observed, indicating a condition that can be considered as the firing of single hole shots independently.

The principles of classification of reserves and resources in the Soviet Union were developed in 1960. Mineral reserve calculations were reviewed by the State Committee on Reserves for approval, then registered in the State List of Mineral Deposits and included in the State Balance of the Reserves. In 1981, however, a new "System of Classification of Reserves and Resources of Mineral Deposits" was adopted. This classification system (Table 1) is still used today in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It subdivides mineral concentrations into seven categories in three major groups, based on the level of exploration performed: explored reserves (A, B, C,), evaluated reserves (C) and prognostic resources (P1, P2, P3). Explored reserves Explored reserves are calculated within exploration contours. Category A The A category is the highest level of classification for any given mineral deposit and requires comprehensive exploration. First, the ore body's position, shape and structure must be accurately delineated (Fig. 1). Next, the mineralogy of the ore body must be studied to determine its composition and properties as well as the distribution of both ore and detrimental components. This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below.
