Many gold ores are known to be refractory so that conventional cyanide processing will result in serious losses of gold and silver values. A significant percentage of these refractory ores contain aresenopyrite and the gold and silver is usually encapsulated within this matrix as well as the pyrite matrix. Normally the values can be recovered as flotation concentrates because of the sulfide compounds with recoveries of over 90% and at very good grades. In order to free the gold and silver, the sulfide matrix must be destroyed. This can presently be achieved by (1) pressure­temperature leaching (2) roasting and (3) bacterial leaching. All of them have advantages and disadvantages as well as an obviously increased cost for the each processing method. However, the increased gold and silver recovery should and must more than offset this cost. It is believed that gold recovery should be well over 90% from the concentrate so that overall recovery from the ore should be in the 90-95% region. All three processes must consider pollution control of both sulfur and arsenic to prevent contamination of air, water or land through improper waste disposal. This paper will concern only bacterial leaching and its necessary control of effluents and solids. Sulfur does not appear to be a problem as the element is oxidized to sulfate and is precipitated with an acceptable solubility. Other important improvements that must be controlled are arsenic and iron which are present as significant values (1-12 g/1 of arsenic, 20-40 g/1 of iron). In addition much smaller values of base metals, aluminum and magnesium can be present as well as other elements depending on the ore and these must be low enough after treatment to meet EPA regulations.

The need for ground support research in underground excavation has been well identified in recent years by many studies in the subject area (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). A typical conclusion from these reports (1, 2) is that the drill-and-blast (D & B) mining or the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) methods are expected to be continued in use for the needs of tunneling in the immediate future. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sponsored in June, 1970 advisory conferences on Hardrock and Soft Ground Tunneling (3,4). These two reports were based on the combined response received from approximately six hundred inquiries from 17 nations in the summer of 1969 and which concerned all aspects of present-day inadequacies of, and the needed improvements in the technology of tunneling. Some specific problem areas in ground support and tunnel linings were: 1) the ability to successfully predict rock loads that must be carried by the support system; and 2) inadequate methods for determining the load-carrying capacity of the various support systems. Therefore, the problem area is clearly defined by these two objectives: 1) To find means of predicting rock loads; and 2) To develop methodology for determining safe, efficient, and economical ground support design practices. Noting these research needs from a great number of sources, the United States Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC), acting as agent for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), undertook contract research effort in these problem areas. Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. The main goal of this study was not only to investigate the effectiveness of the FGX Dry Separator for removing pure rock from run-of-mine coal producing a better feed stock for conventional coal preparation plants but also to optimize the FGX Dry Separator performance for producing a salable clean coal product without using the conventional wet coal preparation processes. A Model FGX-1 Dry Separator with feed throughput capacity of 10 tph was extensively tested at the Illinois Coal Development Park using two coal samples having distinctly different cleaning characteristics. Statistically designed experimental programs were conducted to indentify critical process variables and optimize FGX Dry Separator performance by systematic adjustments of critical process variable parameters. The coal cleaning performance of the FGX Dry Separator was evaluated for the particle size range of 63.5 x 4.76 mm in most cases, although FGX Dry Separator feed consisted of nominal -63.5 mm run-of-mine coals. The best cleaning performance obtained from the FGX Dry Separator is described by specific gravity of separation (SG50) and probable error (Ep) values of 1.98 and 0.17, respectively. The SG50 and Ep values for individual size fractions were as follow: 1.90 and 0.12 for the +50.8 mm size fraction, 1.95 and 0.18 for the 50.8 x 25.4 mm size fraction, 2.01 and 0.19 for the 25.4 x 12.7 mm size fraction, and 2.03 and 0.23 for the 12.7 x 4.76 mm size fraction. These process efficiency measures produced a clean coal with ash content of 13.38% from a feed coal with ash content of 34.45%. Ash content of tailings and middlings streams were 85.09% and 39.57%, respectively. Total sulfur contents of corresponding streams were 3.87%, 4.68%, 6.87%, and 4.62%. For a relatively easy to clean Illinois No 6 seam coal (Cleaning Index: 0.72), only about 0.42% of the clean coal (i.e., 1.6 float fraction) present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream. For a relatively difficult to clean coal (Cleaning Index: 0.53), about 0.98% of the clean coal present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream.

1.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter seeks to provide an overview of important factors involved in the implementation of heap leach technology as a vehicle for gold extraction from its ores. Toward this end, brief discussions of the various elements important to this process are presented here. Topics covered in this chapter include a brief history of the process; basic chemical reactions responsible for the process ; characteristics of ores amenable to heap leaching; location of the greatest concentration of heap leach projects in the U.S.; heap leach components, methods, regulatory/permitting considerations; and economic considerations. Most of these subjects are treated at much greater length in subsequent chapters. Thus, this chapter serves as a summary for those which follow, in addition to providing the reader with a feeling for those topics which may be of most immediate interest. 1.1.1 History of the Process Modern Day Precious metal heap leaching technology has developed over the past decade, although the principles of heap leaching per se, as well as those of gold extraction through cyanidation have a long history (see discussion below). However, it is in the past 10 years that heap leaching has developed into an efficient method of treating oxidized gold and silver ores. It has proven to be both an efficient way to extract precious metals from small, shallow deposits, as well as an attractive way to treat large, low- grade, disseminated deposits. Heap leaching has several advantages compared to conventional milling (i .e., crushing, grinding, and agitation leaching). In general, these advantages include simplicity, lower capital and operating costs, shorter start-up times, and less intensive environmental regulatory concerns. A possible disadvantage of currently existing heap leach technology is a potentially lower percentage of metal extraction being obtained from the ore than would be the case with conventional milling (Potter, 1981; Hiskey, 1985; and Thorstad, 1987) The actual principle of heap leaching has a long history as inferred previously. For example, mines in Hungary recycled copper-bearing solutions through waste heaps in the mid-sixteenth century (Hiskey, 1985), and Spanish miners percolated acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto around 1752. By 1900, leaching operations were employing such techniques as leach/rest cycles to maximize copper recovery (Taylor and Whelan, 1942; Thorstad, 1987). Copper dump leaching is currently

In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer designated crystalline silica as a 2A probable carcinogen. As a result, crystalline silica is regulated under the Hazard Communication Standard as a probable carcinogen at a concentration of 0.1% or greater in the workplace. Crystalline silica will be listed as "reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen" by the National Toxicological Program. This designation of crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen has created major issues for the mineral and chemical producer, including labeling, hazard communications, marketing a material with potential hazard exposure, and potential liability. The State of California also regulates crystalline silica under Proposition 65 in products as a carcinogen, based upon the IARC determination that it is a probable carcinogen. More federal and state regulations are anticipated as a result of the IARC classification of crystalline silica and its subsequent federal regulation. Respirable crystalline silica has been regulated as a hazardous dust for many years by OSHA. This regulation was initiated to prevent silicosis, another occupational disease. OSHA has established monitoring devices for determining the concentration of airborne respirable silica in order to measure exposure to this substance. The accurate determination of the crystalline silica content is critical to dealing with these health risks and regulations. In the past, crystalline silica was considered to be safe and, because of its ubiquitous nature, little effort was made to determine or quantify its presence in most materials. The Hazard Communication Standard requires that a1l products containing 0.1% or greater crystalline silica must be properly labeled for this material and its hazard. Unfortunately, the 0.1% threshold was not chosen on the basis of established analytical capabilities for crystalline silica, but results from general limits for potentially carcinogenic chemicals and substances. Numerous methods have been developed for the determination of crystalline silica in a variety of products. However, these methods are not generally applicable since they must be specific for silica in any of its crystalline states and not just for total silica content. Chemical tests for silica are not difficult and quite accurate at the 0.1% level; however, in addition to its crystalline phases, it occurs in amorphous phases and in a wide variety of crystalline and amorphous silicates. In general, there is little correlation between total silica content and crystalline silica.

During 1992 a number of papers were published on aspects of respiratory disease in US underground coal miners. These included reports on trends in prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the risks of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis in relation to dust exposure, and the relationship between lung disease other than pneumoconiosis and dust exposure. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the essential findings from these investigations. PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE OF COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is usually detected in living miners through use of the chest x-ray. Deposits of dust in the lung, and the fibrotic tissue reactions to the dust, are manifested on the x-ray as small and large opacities. These abnormalities are quantified into degrees of severity using a standardized classification scheme (the International Classification of Radiographs of the Pneumoconioses of the International Labour Office). For small opacities, the scheme provides for a four-point scale of abnormality (0, 1, 2, 3), reflecting increasing profusion of the opacities on the x-ray. In this report, category 1 or greater small rounded opacities (CWP 1+) represents the earlier radiographic stages of pneumoconiosis. Large opacities, indicate the later and often disabling stage of pneumoconiosis, usually referred to as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Information collected in a national surveillance program for underground coal miners (the Coalworkers' X-ray Surveillance Program (CWXSP)) and a large epidemiologic study (National Study of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (NSCWP)) provide a means to assess trends in CWP prevalence over the years following the reduction in dust levels mandated by the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (FCMHSA). These programs are operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are described in detail in Attfield and Althouse (1992) and Attfield and Castellan (1992). Both studies were divided administratively into distinct time periods, and the results shown here reflect that division. Figure 1 shows the prevalence of CWP 1+ as determined from data from the CWXSP, plotted by time period and years in mining. There is evidence of a temporal reduction in prevalence. (The lack of an obvious decline in the early 1970s may be an artifact arising from use of different versions of the standard classification.) Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. US coal consumption reached new heights in 1985, but production was constrained by excess consumer inventories. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 742 Mt (818 million st) during the year. This is a 3.4% gain over the previous consumption high 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. An additional 84 Mt (92.7 million st) of US coal were shipped abroad in 1985, up 13.7% from exports a year earlier. Coal production in 1985 totaled 804 Mt (886 million st), 1.1% below the record 813 Mt (896 million st) produced in 1984. The slight decline in coal output is attributed primarily to a 13% drawdown of large consumer stockpiles built up in 1984 in anticipation of a miners strike that never occurred. Coal demand, and hence production, were also restrained by slower economic growth in 1985 and additional gains in nuclear generation of electricity. Domestic market requirements for coal in 1985 were mixed. Electric utility consumption rose 4.4%; coke plants consumed 6.7% less coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 2.1% and consumption in the residential and commercial sector fell 14.8%. The 2.2% increase in electric power generation in 1985 resulted in a 4.4% rise in utility coal consumption, totaling 630 Mt (694 million st) for the year. Twenty-nine of 45 states where coal-fired electric power plants were operating shared in the 26.7 Mt (29.5 million st) increase in 1985. Coal receipts at utilities fell by 16 Mt (18 million st) as these facilities worked off 21 Mt (23.4 million st) from stockpiles during the year. Electricity generation at coal-fired power plants similarly climbed 4.4% to 1.4 trillion kWh in 1985. This gave coal a 56.8% share of electricity generated from all energy sources compared with 55.5% in 1984. The average price of coal delivered to these facilities remained essentially unchanged during the year. It declined on 1.5% from $38.26/t ($34.71 per st) during the fourth quarter of 1984 to $37.70/t ($34.20 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1985. Coal consumption at coke plants continue to reflect a depressed steel industry. After rebounding 18.9% in 1984 for the first time in five years, coal consumption at coke plants again declined 6.7% to 37 Mt (41.1 million st) in 1985. Coke consumption 26.5 Mt (29.3 million st) exceeded production, 26 Mt (28.7 million st), in 1985. This resulted in a 1-Mt (1.2-million st) decline in coke stocks at producer and distributor levels during the year. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants decreased 7.6% from $64.30/t ($58.34 per st) during the final quarter of 1984 to $59.42/t (53.91 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal consumption in other industries, including all manufacturing and industrial consumers except coke plants, totaled 68.3 Mt (75.3 million st) in 1985. This was the highest level attained in more than a decade. But the lower percentage rise last year (2.1% compared to 11.8% in 1984) reflected slower growth in the nation&apos;s economy in 1985. The average price of coal delivered to industrial firms declined 4.5% from $42.32/t ($38.39 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1984 to $40.39/t ($36.65 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal-producing states in Appalachia mined 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) tons less in 1985 than in 1984 for a 2.4% loss. The largest contributors to the region&apos;s production decrease to 393 Mt (433 million st) were Pennsylvania, down 14.7% to 60 Mt (66 million st); Ohio, down 8.3% to 32.6 Mt (36 million st); and West Virginia, down 2.9% to 115 Mt (127 million st). Conversely, eastern Kentucky production was up 4.8% to 111 Mt (122.8 million st) in 1985, while production in Tennessee climbed 9.7% to 40 Mt (44 million st). No coal was mined in Georgia last year. Coal production in the interior region in 1985 declined 3.9% to 173 Mt (190.4 million st). Substantial production losses occurred in Indiana, down 8% to 31 Mt (34.5 million st); and in western Kentucky, down 7.9% to 36 Mt (40 million st). Coal production in Texas rose 5.7% to 39 Mt (43.5 million st) in 1985. Louisiana began mining lignite 140 kt (151,000 st) during the year. Production in the western region increased 3.4% to 238 Mt (262.5 million st) in 1985. Wyoming, up 5.3% to 125 Mt (140 million st); and North Dakota, up 16.5% to 23.5 Mt (26 million st) contributing the largest amounts. Production gains were also shown in Washington, Utah and, notably, in Alaska where coal output climbed 72.9% to 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) in 1985. Most of the additional coal produced in Alaska last year was shipped abroad. Coal stocks held by consumers totaled 154 Mt (170 million st) at the end of the year. This was 27 Mt (30 million st), or 13.7% below the inventory level at the end of 1984. Stocks held by producers and distributors declined by 868 kt (957,000 st), or 2.8% in 1985 to 30 Mt (33 million st). A drawdown in stockpiles occurred in each consumer sector during 1985. Stocks held by electric utilities totaled 142 Mt (156 million st) at the year&apos;s end, 13% lower than stock levels at the end of 1984.

"The Zenith-Victoria /1/ and Jubileynoye /2/ hydrothermal fields have symmetrical structural position on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (Fig. 1). In order to compare the evolution of hydrothermal systems, we conducted mineralogical and geochemical studies of SMS from both sites.Radiochemical and geochemical investigations of massive sulfides of the Zenith-Victoria field distinguishes three major stages of evolution: initial, interim and final represented by Fe-S, Cu-Fe and Zn-Fe types of SMS respectively /3/. In this talk, we describe the results of geochemical analysis of massive sulfides from the Zenith-Victoria field. Geochemical varieties of SMS are considered to be indicators of the evolutionary stages of the hydrothermal system."

An amphoteric collector was tested for dolomite removal from phosphate ore. The effects of some operating parameters and their significance on the flotation of dolomite were studied using statistically designed experiments. The parameters studied were impeller speed, pH and collector dosage. Analysis of the results showed that pH is the most significant parameter. Moreover, a concentrate containing 0.53% MgO and ~31.1% P2O5 with a recovery of ~ 90% can be achieved at optimum values of studied parameters, i.e., a pH of 12, an impeller speed of 1,000 rpm and a collector dosage of 2.5 kg/t.

The kinetics of the dissolution of galena was studied by monitoring the mixed potential of a galena electrode in ferric sulfate solutions. The results show that the mixed potential of the galena electrode fluctuated with time in a regular pattern in a 0.1 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 1.66 and in a 0.01 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 2.33 at 35°C. The periodic accumulation and precipitation of lead ions at the galena electrode surface and the cyclical variation in pH at the galena electrode surface caused the oscillation phenomena.

Asarco Incorporated’s Omaha, Nebraska refinery site and the City of Omaha’s downtown redevelopment projects are the perfect example of the marriage of the Brownfield and Sustainable Development strategies. Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.

In March of 1978 the first set of Angular Spiral Liners utilized in grate discharge ball mills for wet grinding was put into service in the San Flanuel Concentrator of Flagma Copper Company. The use of these liners has decreased grinding media consumption by 19.2% and grinding energy consumption by 15.8%. In addition a 1.1% increase in grinding throughput is being realized through the use of the system. This paper describes the Angular Spiral Lining System and reviews the test program at the San Manuel Arizona Concentrator. Operating parameters are discussed in addition to the current testing program to futher optimize the system.

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

The Dee disseminated gold deposit is the northernmost mine in the Carlin gold belt. We analyzed soil samples £ran undisturbed areas overlying the deposit to determine the usefulness of soil geochemistry in identifying ore zones. The depth of sampling ranged from 12 to 14 inches, depending on soil development. The -80 mesh fraction was analyzed by atomic absorption for Au, As, Sb, Hg, and T1 and by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis for Ag. Highly anomalous Au, Kg, As, Ag, and Sb are most closely associated with ore zones whereas T1 is more broadly dispersed. Hg is the only element that identifies deep ore.

The City of Toronto plans to construct a 1,350 mm consolidation sewer along the East Don Roadway (EDR). The project includes installation of approximately 260 meter of 1,350 mm diameter concrete pressure pipe through microtunneling methods. The sewer alignment crosses underneath a busy 5-lane arterial road and then follows the very narrow East Don Roadway road allowance. This paper discusses the significant challenges overcome to design the Don Roadway sewer using slurry microtunneling methods through mixed face conditions below the groundwater table in a congested road allowance. A curved microtunnel was ultimately required to avoid conflicts with existing utilities, condominium tiebacks and a bridge structure.

This work evaluates the effectiveness of similitude theory in predicting the draft of a rubber tire loader’s bucket during initial penetration. The work uses 1:16 and 1:8 scale models of an 18-t capacity load haul dump, scaled with the Buckingham Pi theorem, to evaluate the prediction of draft and penetration under different operating and different dynamic conditions. We hypothesized that the observed relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and the operating and dynamic conditions will hold true for an upscaled model. Similarly, we hypothesized that the results of experiments conducted with the smaller scale model should predict the draft on an upscaled model.

The San Andres mine, located in the western mountain region of Honduras, Central America, contains epithermal gold mineralization as disseminations, in quartz-chalcedonic veins and stockworks. Host rocks include a thick sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary conglomerates, sandstones, rhyodacite tuffs and andesites. Mineralization is controlled by northwest and northeast striking, normal faults and fractures which dip steeply east and west. Currently, 500 STPD of 1. 93 Grams/MT gold ore is being open-pit mined from the conglomerate and andesite. The mine is at the west end of a mineralized zone that can be traced over an area of approximately 1.5 square kilometers.
