Air-fall tuffs have been altered to zeolite via reaction of volcanic glass with local pore solutions at the six localities discussed in this paper. These are in the southern Basin and Range Province of Arizona and New Mexico, and in the Trans-Pecos and Coastal Plain regions of Texas. Zeolitization occurred in either closed- hydrologic, open-hydrologic, or hydrothermal groundwater systems. The tripping Spring Valley (DSV) chabazite in Arizona and the Buckhorn clinoptilolite in New Mexico originated in a late Cenozoic network of closed-hydrologic, lacustrine basins extending from southeast Arizona into southwest New Mexico. At DSV, two potentially commercial chabazite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustine mudstone. The main zeolite tuft contains up to 90 percent chabazite. The upper zeolite tuff averages approximately 67 precent chabazite. At the Buckhorn deposit, two clinoptilolite-rich tuffs are interbedded with lacustrine m udstone in the upper part of the Gila Conglomerate. The lower zeolite tuff contains up to 90 percent clinoptilolite. The upper zeolite tuff contains over 60 percent clinoptilolite. The Casa Piedra clinoptilolite is in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. It formed during the Tertiary in a closed basin containing a playa lake. The Casa Piedra tuff averages about 60 percent clinoptilolite. Air-fall tuffs of the Cuchillo Negro, New Mexico and Tilden, Texas clinoptilolite deposits were zeolitically altered by either percolating ground waters in open-hydrologic systems or locally by ponded, saline, alkaline solutions. Cuchillo Negro tuffs are Tertiary and average approximately 50 percent clinoptilolite. Clinoptilolite-rich tuffs of Ebcene age have been mined from four quarries at the Tilden deposits. Tufts from the Kuykendall and Buck Martin quarries contain approximately 50 to 60 percent clinoptilolite. Low temperature, SiO2 - rich, hydrothermal solutions altered air-fall tuff to clinoptilolite and chabazite in the Foster Canyon area of the Tertiary Cedar Hills and Seldon Hills volcanic-vent zone in southcentral New Mexico. Poster Canyon tuffs contain up to 60 percent zeolite and average 40 to 50 percent clinoptilolite. The dominant mineral in the zeolite tufts at the six deposits studied is generally microcrystalline and either chabazite or clinoptilolite. Lithic fragments, unaltered volcanic glass, other zeolites, quartz, calcite, opal-CT, cristobalite, feldspar, evaporites, clays, and mafic minerals are also constituents of the tufts.

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

"SummaryFor more than a century, ground freezing has been a construction technique used in stabilization of ground by means of lowering the temperature of surrounding soil strata. This technique is used in circumstances where conventional grouting method is unable to achieve the degree of consolidation required to prevent settlement and water ingress during the execution of underground excavation. Whilst ground freezing is effective in imparting self-supporting characteristics to the excavation profile, it poses significant challenges when it comes to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) where sprayed concrete is used to support the freshly excavated ground. Sprayed concrete, if used in an appropriate manner, provides a fast, efficient and structurally-reliable means of supporting the structure, especially in underground construction. The evolvement in sprayed concrete technology is attributed to the development of concrete know-how, improvement of spraying technique with the use of automation spraying equipment, more in-depth understanding of sprayed concrete behavior and enhancement of materials used in production of high quality sprayed concrete Not only has this markedly escalated the prominence of sprayed concrete on wider perspective,. the positive development has also pushed sprayed concrete beyond its boundaries, enabling it to be embarked on area of application not considered possible decades ago. Nevertheless, sprayed concrete, for all its placement versatility, still depends largely on the technicality provision very similar to concrete to achieve the required quality. Parameters such as raw material grading composition, curing temperature and cement quality are some of the factors that can easily sway the quality of concrete from one extreme to another. Conducive ambient temperature is critical in ensuring optimum hydration of concrete. This is more important in sprayed concrete where temperature plays a pivotal role in influencing the early strength and long term strength development. The low temperature imposed by ground freezing is everything but ideal for competent hydration to take place. This paper outlines how the innovative use of sprayed concrete helps to overcome the adverse ambient temperature in the construction of a 110m underground pedestrian walkway utilizing ground freezing technique in Hong Kong."

If I told you tonight at the outset that my prognastications for the future of mine ventilation were imparted to me by a palm reader or inspired by a vision, you'd dismiss what I had to say before I said it! If, on the other hand, I told you that my forecasts were the result of an elaborate computer model, derived from a complex algorithm, which in turn relied on finite element analysis -- and the entire projection confirmed by on-site experiments with a turbo hybrid-flow mine fan -- you'd sit up in anticipation and hang on my every word!! All of which places me in a terrible dilemma, because my predictions really lie somewhere in between. My intent is to talk to you out of my background of forty years in mine ventilation, looking ahead to conditions that I expect to prevail in the next fifteen years. You may be curious why I picked an unlikely time span of 55 years for my overview, and my response is that it bridges a career lifetime. "The last forty", of course, corresponds with the period of my professional employment since graduating with a B.S. and M.S. here at Penn State. "The next fifteen" bridges the period I expect (the Lord willing) to remain professionally active -- and coincidently brings us into the beginning of the 21st century. (I must confess to stacking the deck a bit: Since it's infinitely harder to look ahead than to look behind, I purposely minimized the forecast period and maximized the history! Besides, "forty" and "fifteen" have a nice phonetic ring, perfect 20/20 vision sums to "forty", etc., etc.). With these disclaimers, I'll invite you to join me now in a fast 55-year overview of mine ventilation, of necessity limited to a broad-brush treatment of the subject. (After all, this is an after-dinner talk, not a marathon!) In each- segment, I've selected the seven topics that seem to me of paramount importance: in the first part, seven accomplishments in retrospect, and in the last, seven expectations for the future. (The number "seven" needn't confound you, either: In the bible, it signifies "wholeness" or "completeness".))

Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

Introduction Based upon the 1980 Bevill Amendment to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), a 1986 Regulatory Determination decision, and subsequent rulemakings, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempted all extraction and beneficiation wastes and twenty mineral processing wastes from regulation under RCRA Subtitle C (hazardous waste) regulations. These twenty mineral processing waste streams were studied in a 1990 Mineral Processing Report to Congress. For purposes of regulatory classification, EPA made special distinctions between extraction/beneficiation and mineral processing. Wastes determined by EPA to be from the extraction/beneficiation of ores and minerals retain the exemption, while wastes found to be mineral processing, except for the “special" twenty mineral processing wastes, fall within RCRA Subtitle C jurisdiction. For those wastes that are subject to RCRA Subtitle C, § 3004(m) of RCRA requires EPA to set levels or methods of treatment, of any, which would substantially diminish the toxicity of the waste or substantially reduce the likelihood of migration of hazardous constituents from the waste so that short- term and long-term threats to human health and the environment are minimized. These treatment standards are developed by EPA under the Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) program. Under § 3004(g) (4) of RCRA, EPA is required to promulgate treatment standards for any waste that is newly identified or listed as hazardous. As part of the settlement agreement in Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) v. Reilly and Chemical Waste Management, Inc. v. EPA (1992), EPA has agreed to propose a rule by June 30, 1995 and promulgate a final rule by June 30, 1996. This rule is commonly referred to as the "Phase IV" LDR rule and will address newly identified mineral processing wastes. Other wastes that will be addressed in this rule include newly listed dyes and pigments and wood preserving wastes. Therefore, in the Phase IV rule EPA will develop treatment standards for all mineral processing wastes that have lost their Bevill exclusion. EPA is currently collecting information on the waste characterization, treatment alternatives, and disposal capacity data currently available on these wastes. SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. The effectiveness of the grouting of saturated, fractured rock in the vicinity of underground workings depends to a great extent on the correct interpretation of the specific hydrogeological conditions at the site. During the planning of grouting operations, calculations of the hydrogeologic co-efficients and of the parameters of the isolating grout curtain(s) and the procedures for forming the curtain(s) must be based on valid hydrogeologic characteristics of the fracture system of the rock within each hydrostratigraphic unit (Anon., 1976). This chapter presents a discussion of the background information that must be collected for these purposes. Details of testing are presented in Chapter 3. The general design of new or the reconstruction of existing underground workings requires a broadly based organization having the expertise to develop a grouting operations plan once it acquires the necessary information. The needed information includes: 1) general information about the hydrogeologic section, 2) the engineering design of the underground workings, 3) the geology of the region, 4) the hydrochemistry of the ground water, 5) the hydraulic properties of the rock, 6) the characterization of all gases present, and 7) characterization of the rock&apos;s physical-mechanical properties which is necessary to avoid or control hydrofracturing . The geological documentation portion of the hydrogeological investigation is prepared based on the results of geologic mapping, geophysical surveys and on geo-exploratory operations at a regional and local scale. Geological data from the excavation of other underground workings in adjacent areas of the region is also included. Finally the results of site specific investigations in boreholes constructed at the site of the proposed underground activity are incorporated. A section of the preliminary report entitled "General Information about the Project Site" patterned after the parent STG guidance document on this subject must be com- piled based on the contents of geological reports and on the general construction plan for a new project or the plan for reconstruction of an existing operation. This section of the preliminary report must contain concise information about the conditions under which the planned grouting operations are to be conducted. The information must cover the geo- graphic, administrative, and economic subject areas also. Information about sources of electrical power, heat and water supplies, the presence and characteristics of local construction materials suitable for making grout (particularly clay and cement for the clay-based grout), transportation, and the status of communication lines and other services must be included in this section. Map scales for this section should be on the order of 1:25,000. The technical characterization of planned underground workings is presented in a project report chapter called "General Construction Plan for a New or the Restoration of an Old Operation. " The characterization comprises concise information about the purpose of the workings, the planned depths (for shafts) and the length (for horizontal and inclined workings), the inside and excavated diameters (for shafts), the cross-sectional area (for inclined and horizontal workings), and the face and mouth markers. If excavated underground workings exist in the region, then a concise description of them must be provided. The characterization of all excavations and all operational conditions must be specified. The location within the general structure of the proposed operation is specified. Flow charts must be included in this section that show: 1) the plan for opening the deposit, 2) the plans of the mining operations, and 3) the planned geological sections as they relate to the main workings. These graphical flow charts and appendices are drawn in scales of 1:2000 or 1:5000. 2.1 GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION The geological characterization of a site of proposed underground workings includes the following principal subject areas: stratigraphy, lithology, structural geology and a characterization of the status of fracturing. 2.1.1 STRATIGRAPHY AND LITHOLOGY A description of the geological section of the rocks to be intersected by the planned underground workings is complied on the basis of: 1) research data derived from core extracted from exploratory boreholes and monitoring boreholes, 2) the documentation and mapping of all natural out- crops in the region, 3) the data from all existing under-ground workings in the regions where operations are being canied out already, along with data from adjacent regions, 4) the data from surface and borehole geophysical investigations (standard and specially developed logging methods, and 5) regional stratigraphy. The geological description of the rock must express the maximum detail possible. The description provides the name of the rock, the granulometric composition (for fragmented rock), the composition and type of stratification, the drilling characteristics of the rock, a visual estimate of porosity and density for each stratum identified, the karstic

Ball Clay Four companies ? H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay, and Unimin Corp. ? mined ball clay in four states in 2008. Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles (WRS) are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. The results of these assessments can be used to determine the applicability of the state groundwater permit program requirements to the operation and closure of these stockpiles. The objective of this hydrologic assessment was to ascertain whether or not the WRS at the Ajo Mine have a reasonable probability of discharging potential pollutants to the underlying aquifer under the operational mine conditions. The hydrologic assessment was performed based on an evaluation of climatic data, prediction of the net infiltration rate through the WRS and prediction of additional hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in WRS. The predicted net infiltration rates ranging from 0.13 inches/year (1.1x10-8 cm/s) to 0.24 inches/year (1.9x10-8 cm/s) are below the threshold value of less than 10-7 cm/s recommended by Hutchison and Ellison (1992) as being characteristic of conditions that produce no or negligible quantities of seepage. In addition, the total time required to deplete available moisture storage within the Ajo Mine WRS and for any potential seepage from the WRS to reach the underlying aquifer is estimated to range from 260 years to 1,950 years. Collectively, the climatological and geotechnical investigations and the hydrologic predictions demonstrate that the WRS at the Ajo Mine hydrologically do not have a reasonable probability of discharging pollutants to the underlying aquifer. As a result of this prediction, the stockpile will not be regulated under the state groundwater permit program and operational and reclamation requirements will be limited to managing surface water runoff.

Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on&apos; pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. "INTRODUCTION The small strain assumption routinely made in tunnel analyses remains sufficient from an engineering point of view as long as convergences do not exceed 10%. More specifically, small strain theory assumes that deformations are so small (in relation to the size of the underground opening) that any geometric change in the continuum can be disregarded (Fig. 1a). In fact, however, the geometry is updated during loading (or unloading) according to large strain theory and thus equilibrium and stiffness are evaluated on the deformed configuration of the continuum (Fig. 1b).In problems involving large deformations, where the undeformed and the deformed tunnel geometry differ significantly, small strain theory leads to erroneous and sometimes even nonsensical results (i.e. it can predict wall displacements even greater than the excavated radius under conditions of very low stiffness and strength, high in situ stress and low support pressure). This can easily be verified from the widely applied relationships for the ground response curve. For example, in the ideal case of linearly elastic behaviour, the convergence of an unsupported opening equals (1+?) s0 / E (where E, ? and s0 denote the Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and initial isotropic stress, respectively) and is greater than 100% for E < (1+?) s0. Although convergences are less than 10% in the great majority of tunnelling projects, very large deformations may take place when tunnelling through weak rocks under a high overburden (Fig. 2). This paper will first present a very simple and practicable way to account for large strains, based entirely on the results of routine small strain analyses, and will subsequently show the importance of addressing large strains in tunnel analysis and design with reference to three typical case studies of tunnelling in squeezing ground."

High salinity geothermal brines typically contain up to several hundred parts per million of valuable heavy metals, and because of the large potential flow of geothermal brines from future power plants, metal production as a by-product could be significant A-planned 55-MW demonstration plant near Niland, California should generate enough spent brine to contain approximately $670,000 per year in gross metal values. Lawrence Livermore Laboratory estimates (1) a Salton Sea Geothermal potential of 1300 to 8700 MW, which would translate to possible yearly heavy metal values between $5,800,000 and .$l05,000,000. Since these estimates were made on a conservative basis, this geothermal reservoir is potentially a large ore deposit. The heavy metals in order of decreasing abundance in high salinity brines from the Salton Sea geothermal field are usually manganese, zinc, iron, lead, and silver. All but manganese and iron are valuable enough to be of commercial interest. Minor amounts of copper and arsenic are also present. Although heavy metal precipitates, particularly lead, have been found in scales within pipelines and obtained from steam flashing, most of the metals remain soluble during steam production; hence removal of the valuable metals from the spent brine before reinjection in ground reservoirs is indicated. Because the heavy metal concentrations are low, a very simple and inexpensive process is required. The heavy metal value in Niland brine is only &apos; about $1 per 1000 gallons; see Table 1. The brine composition shown in Table 1 was taken from one of the brine samples used in our study. Projected post-flash brine from a steam plant has somewhat higher Zn and Pb values, but the gross heavy metal value is still less than $2 per 1000 gallons.

The United States has the largest total (364 billion metric tons) and recoverable (182 billion metric tons) coal reserves in the world.1 However, progressive coal utilization in this country has been hampered by environmental constraints, such as restrictions on sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate emissions. New technologies are being pursued both to appease these environmental concerns and improve economic performance and process efficiency. These technologies, however, have not reached the level of effectiveness required for optimum operation. If more stringent emission standards are imposed, it is likely that the coal industry, and the industrial and utility sectors will look increasingly toward the successful development of new and advanced coal cleaning technologies in order to continue and promote the use of coal in this country. The EPA New Source Performance Standards In 1979, the Environmental Protection Agency in response to the amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1977 issued new source performance standards (NSPS) for utility and industrial boilers. The NSPS set emission standards for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates affecting boilers of 250 MM Btu per hour heat input or &apos;greater that started construction after September 1978. Plants starting construction or in operation before September 1978 remained subject to the provisions of the regulations promulgated in 1971, i.e., SO2 emissions of 1.2 15/MM Btu. The NSPS for SO2 emissions provides a sliding scale for SO2 reduction depending on the sulfur content of the run-of-mine coal, with an upper limit of 1.2 lb of SO2 per million Btu and a minimum emission level based on 70% SO2 removal. Table 1 summarizes the EPA NSPS for SO2 emission standards.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a byproduct from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

[The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of&apos;4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

INTRODUCTION A company must have an objective, and that usually is to earn money. In some countries an objective can also be to reduce unemployment in an area or to develop nonindustrialized areas. Government-owned companies can also have as an objective that of serving the com¬munity. This discussion is limited to the consideration of normal companies wanting to earn money. Such an objective, however, has to be defined in more detail. It is not satisfactory only to maximize the total annual profit from, for example, a mining project. In comparison with most other branches, the mining in¬dustry is very capital intensive. When starting a new project, the mining company must invest a lot of money in mines, ore treatment plants, etc. It is normally many years before any income is received from the ore. Fig. 14 illustrates the payments for a new mining proj¬ect with an expected lifetime of 10 years. Whether this project is a profitable one depends on a lot of things. If the company has a shortage of money, it can be impossible to finance the project. Even if the company has enough money, the management may think that perhaps the project may not return the money fast enough. Such limitations will not be discussed here. Suppose that the company has internal funds from its own operation or can borrow them. Since the mining company must invest the money in advance, it is not satisfactory only to add all of the costs during the mine&apos;s lifetime and compare them with the total income during the lifetime. The company must include the time value of the capital. In this appendix, the basic investment theory neces¬sary to judge the profitability and costs of mining proj¬ects will be discussed. INVESTMENT THEORY Time Value of Money If a private person has a dollar and puts it into a bank, he or she will receive interest. If the interest rate is r%, the value after one year will be $(1 + r), after 2 years $(I + r)2 , etc. The interest rate represents the time value of money. If the same person wants to have $1 in the bank af¬ter one year, he or she has to put $(1 + r)-1 in the bank today. If the person wants $1 after 2 years, it is neces¬sary to put $(1 + r)-2 into the bank today, etc. So one dollar today is worth more than one dollar tomorrow. It is, of course, not correct to compare money at differ¬ent times since each dollar has a different value. It is necessary to transform all payments to the same point in time. That is called the calculation of the capital value of a cash flow, and to do this an interest rate is used. In the same way, the cash flow from a project like that shown in Fig. 14 can be translated to any other point in time. Most common is to translate all payments to the beginning of the mining period. That capital value is often called the present capital value. Interest Rate What interest rate will the company use? A com¬pany, just like an individual, has the basic alternatives of keeping its money in the bank and receiving interest, or borrowing money from a bank and paying an interest rate. The interest rate represents the time value of money for the company. If the company has a shortage of money, or many good potential investment projects, it has to use a higher interest rate than if it has a lot of money available. Most companies also increase their interest rate as a hedge against the risk involved by using money for uncertain investments, because of taxes, etc. Capital Value When the interest rate has been decided, it is possi¬ble to estimate the capital value of a project. Here the discussion will be limited to the estimation of present capital values. Suppose that one wants to know the present capital value of $1 (Fig. 15), which will be received after n years. To transform it n years back in time, one must multiply it by the factor (1 + r)-, where r is the inter¬est rate the company uses. Table 1 gives these factors for different years and interest rates. Example: At the end of year 5 a mining company has to invest $50 million in a new mine. What is the present capital value at the end of year 0? The company uses an interest rate of 15%a.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine&apos;s operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." A technician&apos;s pay is commensurate with his or her tech level. Much of Sierrita&apos;s training in past years concentrated on building basic

INTRODUCTION Necessary science and technology are not well established for the design of responsible treatment and disposal of arsenical residues from refractory gold ores. Specifically, there is uncertainty about the precise composition and behaviour of oxidised arsenic species in these wastes, and an analysis of possible chemical behaviour suggests that potentially difficult control and disposal problems remain to be so 1 ved. In tackling these the undoubted toxicity of arsenic in excess and its bad press should not blind one to the realities of actual behaviour in the environment, and that some adverse behaviour inevitably has to be to 1 erated as a cost in return for the recovery of an operation's gold for society. The problem is to minimise any such cost. Each refractory ore will be different. Many will contain so little arsenic that it will cause only trivial problems in disposal, but there remain others with significant arsenic content, say in the order of 1% or more, to cause concern. As already implied, concern can be over emphasised but equally underestimated. The balance which must be struck in the design of responsible disposal in the widest sense requires objective and practical assessment of a complex range of chemical, biochemical, engineering and economic design factors, all of which should involve the process design team in constructive dialogue with the 1 oca l regulatory authorities. In British terms, the general objective should be the Best Practicable Environmental Option. Arsenic is ubiquitous in waters, rocks and soils and all living things. Its compounds undergo natural geochemical and bi ochemi cal cycles including powerful adsorption and precipitation processes which return to nature all leakage from the inevitable disturbance of mining and extraction operations. Within limits, all life is tolerant to its presence, and adaptation and detoxication processes occur to deal with local excesses.
