Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentra­tion and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolu­tion rates. This is made possible without suffering from high energy or wear rates by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device which can be constructed from a variety of wear and chemical resistant materials. High temperature tolerance is also possible so that the device can be incorporated into a pressure leach circuit with significant capital cost savings because of the high capacity to volume ratio that is an inherent feature of the device. For cyanidation applications the outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of about 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40-45 % solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. Six mines are currently employing the Filblast Process and another six are conducting plant trials. The ore types range from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/ arsenopy­rite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. It has been found that the effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved leaching and adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately eight million tonnes per annum. This paper presents the operating benefits and cost savings which have been achieved in four plants, two treating oxide/ sulphide ore blends and two treating highly reactive sulphide ore and concentrate. Filblast leasing and maintenance charges and pump operating costs are about ten percent of the benefits. A conceptual cyanidation circuit based on the Filblast Cyanidation Process is also discussed. The Filblast System is an in-line pressure leach aerator/ reactor which generates very high shear and greatly enhances mass transfer rate by generating extremely small gas particles where oxygen gas is required for oxidation reactions and/or utilising the high shear characteristics to minimise the diffusion boundary layer. Both of these rate limiting factors effect the rate mechanism for gold cyanidation. Initially two multi-stage Filblast aerator cartridges formed a leach train but now the trend is to install a single submersible cartridge of equivalent perfor­mance. This design simplifies installation and minimises change-out times. However the in-line concept can be employed where high pressure leaching or pressure oxidation is required. The reactor is submerged in the leach tank so that the mass of gas micro-bubbles contained in the discharging slurry is entrained in the agitator vortex and is thoroughly dispersed throughout the tank. A diagrammatic representation of a leaching circuit incorpo­rating the Filblast Reactor is shown in Figure 1. The recirculation pump takes new feed directly from the cyclone overflow trash screen either under gravity or pump fed and recirculates the balance to maintain 250 - 270 m3/h total slurry flow. All of the leach feed slurry gets at least one pass through the Filblast thereby eliminating short-circuiting. Typically a 6/4 EAH Warman pump drawing 60-70 kW is required to circulate 250 m3/h through the system. The back pressure generated by the Filblast is in the range of 400-500 kPa depending upon pumping rate, pulp density and slurry rheology. The high shearing rate effectively negates the viscous effect of slurries and the addition of a gas further reduces the pulp density by virtue of the intensely aerated, homogeneous medium. The gold leaching Filblast cartridge elements are made of polyurethane but stainless steel, ni-hard, rubber or ceramics can be used depending on the operating temperature and design duty. The efficiency of the Filblast Leach Reactor in gold cyani­dation is due to the extremely efficient mixing, oxygen dissolu­tion and surface polishing action of the Filblast design. Either air or oxygen may be used but Atomaer recommend the use of oxygen because of the rate benefits gained from cyaniding at [02] significantly > 20 ppm D O in the reactor. Very high DO concentrations have been measured; in excess of 50 ppm. There is some debate as to whether the value is a true measure of the DO or the oxygen meter sensor is measuring the effect of a mass of very fine bubbles of free oxygen. Regardless of the fact the reactor has registered some amazing gold dissolution rates commonly in excess of 80 % during transit of the pulp through the reactor. "The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing not only because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is refractory, causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte in Montana and Quiruvilca in Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions – pH range of 8-13 – using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after potentially cycled voltammograms in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams constructed from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using STABCAL software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs. SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of elemental sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached from the surface. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs. SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS4 3-) or thiosulfate (AsO4 3-) without sulfur formation.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of ores and concentrates bearing arsenic and other hazardous elements often outweigh those in hydrometallurgical processing, particularly when minerals like enargite (Cu3AsS4) are present. The hydrometallurgical processing of enargite-bearing materials can be broken down into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under alkaline conditions. The selective leaching of arsenic would preferably leave behind copperrich sulfide phases, typically chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), which then become more amenable to conventional copper (and gold) processing. Furthermore, selective leaching often employs sulfide (S2-), bisulfide (HS-) or polysulfides (Sx 2-) to first extract the arsenic as AsS4 3- and AsS3 3- (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp et al., 2010a,b). However, hypochlorite leaching (Viñals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihajlovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and finegrinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface (Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006) have been investigated to increase the normally slow reaction kinetics. Because gold ores are becoming more refractory due to increasing arsenic contents as a result of enargite, these methods are being examined more closely by the gold-mining industry."

"Canopy air curtains (CAC) on roof bolting machines have been proven, through laboratory and field investigations, to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing dust overexposures. Another desired application is to develop a CAC that is mounted in the compartment of a shuttle car to protect the operator from dust. The challenges faced with this design include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds, causing cab airspeeds that may exceed 600 fpm, as found in this study of a central Appalachian underground coal mine. Prior research and laboratory testing indicate that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult to achieve because the clean air from the CAC is unable to penetrate through the high velocity mine air and make it to the breathing zone of the operator. During this investigation by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), dust concentrations of the shuttle car operator were measured. Also, air velocities experienced by the operator were measured using a recording vane anemometer. Results from the survey indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust (2.22 mg/m3) occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where there was an average airspeed of 157 fpm. While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 203 fpm. This study indicates that a CAC system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, since the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities less than 200 fpm. INTRODUCTION NIOSH has issued a contract (#200-2015-63485) with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem et al., 2016) to develop a canopy air curtain (CAC) for coal mine shuttle cars. The proposed design maintains a similar design to the roof bolter CAC by providing filtered air via a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide the uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a CAC is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow [Engel et al. 1987]. This ventilation airflow, if the velocity is significantly high, can shear the downward flow from the plenum. The shear caused by the ventilating airflow can reduce the effectiveness of the CAC by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the CAC zone of protection."

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). Erratic distribution of values in free gold ore bodies presents severe problems in sorting material in large scale open pit mining. However, an intense program of modern blasting techniques and less than modern gold panning results in good sorting at Houston International's Manhattan mine. Blasting technique is important. If the sample location cannot be relocated because of blasted material movement, information acquired while drilling is useless. So short benches are critical to minimize dilution. Though not very accurate, panning allows for rapid analysis. The more accurate fire assay does not provide the needed speed. Panning can be fairly accurate and errors made are mostly on the low side. Samples of mixed and broken stockpile material are used as checks on pit procedure and to develop stockpile content in¬formation. Added tonnages discovered offset the higher labor costs of this careful sorting technique. The mine is located in central Nevada's Toquima Range in the small mining town of Manhattan, 322 km north of Las Vegas. The mine has four epithermal stockwork ore bodies that are mined in two pits. The mine problem was that conventional ore control was not separating ore from waste. Assays of 6-m blast-holes were used on 5-m centers. The blastholes were relocated by stadia survey after blasting. Holes assaying above the cutoff grade were flagged and mined as ore. This system is practical and useful in high concentration ore bodies or in evenly disseminated mineralization. But it was not practical at Manhattan because of large gold particles and small ore pocket sizes. Ore pockets were often missed when drilling a grid area for blasting. Also, large gold nuggets made assay results unreliable. The probability of a nugget being contained in an assay charge is small. So most results were low, compared to actual grades mined based on stockpile samples. When a nugget found its way into a fire assay charge, the result would be far higher than the actual grade of material represented. In addition, disturbance by blasting created problems in relocating ore. Because of these problems, the grade control program was intensified in September 1979. It successfully separated ore and waste in blocked out ore areas and located more ore in "waste" areas. Known reserves mined to date have increased up to 50% on some benches. The methods used are modern blasting techniques, detailed assaying, and traditional panning of samples collected from active mining faces. These methods allow mining flexibility, to match the variable mineral occurrence in ore bodies. The united effort of the geology and engineering departments has been important to the program's success.

1984 saw the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in Soviet geology-the discovery of kimberlites in Siberia, an event that vaulted the Soviet Union to second rank among the world's producers of both gem and industrial diamonds. There are many legends associated with this story, legends about those who predicted the discovery and those who achieved it in the field. The story told here unfolded during the field campaigns of the 1940s through 1960s, as witnessed by the authors and their companies of an earlier generation. This story illustrates science, chance, and human emotions at work, resulting in a blend of conviction, courage, bureaucratic sniping, and competition for glory. At the same time, it is an illustration of the workings of the Soviet exploration system. In a broader sense, it is the realization of the Russian image-boundless natural wealth, indomitable ingenuity, and the rigid political economic system that permeates the Russian landscape as well as the people. Most accounts of the Siberian diamond saga begin with statements such as, "This discovery confirmed the predictions of...", or "It was a result of predictions of one of the greatest Soviet geologists, Academician V.S. Sobelov...". These are only part of the truth. It had become apparent even in the 1930s that the Siberian Platform contained one of the Earth's greatest Basaltic provinces, described in a monograph by Sobolev...; and at the end of the thirties, G.G. Moor of the Institute of Arctic Geology found alnoites, similar in many ways to kimberlites. At the same time, the famous polar geologist, N.N. Urvantsev found other kimberlite like rocks in the southern Taymir Peninsula, adjacent to the Siberian Platform. In publications describing these rocks, Moor and Urvantsev mentioned for the first time the possibility of finding diamondiferous kimberlites similar to those in South Africa. Unfortunately, Urvantsev spent little time in the field between terms in concentration camps. Moor was considered by his superiors to be no more than a good descriptive petrographer; they suggested to him that his conclusions should be backed up by more highly regarded specialists. Thereupon, Moor asked Sobolev to coauthor a paper with him and this became the widely quoted prediction about diamonds in Siberia. Another early paper should also be mentioned, an unpublished paper found by M.I. Rabkin in the geological archives of the Norilsk Metallurgical Plant, written by Yu. M. Sheinmann when he worked in the concentration camp there in the late forties. This report placed the probable location of yet-to-be-discovered kimberlites within less than 100 km of their correct location.

Introduction Belt conveyors usually run in a straight line. The correct alignment is a major criterion for reliable functioning and optimum running properties. Any misalignment of the conveyor, especially mistracking of the belt, can have many negative effects. As a consequence of this, damage can occur on the belt and conveyor, some material can he thrown off at the edges and serious running problems can arise. In the worst case the belt can come off its supporting structure so that operations are brought to a halt. The absolutely straight alignment of a belt conveyor is actually impossible so that on closer observation every belt conveyor contains more or less sharp curves. Whereas on non-movable conveyors the deviations from the straight can he kept within the range of practical measuring accuracy by careful installation, movable conveyors in surface mining or belt systems in difficult terrain often contain curves that are easy to see with the naked eye. Below ground, too, alignment cannot always achieved to a desirable extent or is changed by geological faults over the years. Despite these unwanted curves, most belt conveyors perform their function reliably. In view of the belt tension, the belt tends to take the easiest path. This in general is the shortest distance between the pulleys on which the belt is tensioned and bent. This means for example that for a curve radius of 10,000 m over a flight of 100 m the greatest deviation from the ideal line is as much as 12 cm. And a figure of this magnitude cannot normally he accepted. In such cases, use is made of guide devices to properly train the belt if it doesn't center itself anyway. If it's possible to control the belt position over such unwanted curves. it can also he expected that the belt tends to follow the desired curved path within certain limits. I'd now like to cite a few examples to illustrate the ways and means of guiding a belt conveyor in curves. Cost-effectiveness The advantages of belt conveyors, in particular for longer conveying distances and mass flows have been known and undisputed for some time. However, there are often obstacles standing in the way of the concept of straight routing. If a belt conveyor is to bypass elevations or existing buildings or to follow the seam of underground deposits or a predetermined path, then substantially tighter radii and longer curves are desirable or necessary.

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

Coal bursts are one of the least understood yet the most critical hazards in underground coal mines. The ground motions induced by seismic events can trigger unstable failure of coal and rock mass and degrade the surroundings of an excavation. Therefore, the characteristics of ground motions should be fully investigated for an improved burst risk management. This paper analyzes ground motion features of a longwall panel from a typical underground burst-prone coal mine in China. The results showed that most of the ground motions on roadways were hardly initiate coal bursts due to insignificant energy input to the damage. The intensity of ground motions in near-field zone were nearly 20 times higher than those in far-field zone. The strongest vibration on roadway was induced by a coal burst with energy of 28,600 kJ, which can cause ground motion of 0.77 m/s and equivalent dynamic stress of 14.69 MPa. The findings of this paper can improve the assessment of seismic risks and its management.

The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

During late 2010, a scientifically founded water spray system was developed for continuous miners (CM) (Patent Pending) that reduces respirable dust exposure for miner operator by about 30%. It includes engineered sprays around the cutting drum, outer bit-ring sprays, chassis sprays and side cutter boom sprays. About 3.6 ? 4.5m (12-15 ft) behind these sprays is additional sprays that spatially cover the area between the CM chassis and the mine roof and ribs. The spray system uses approximately the same volume of water as currently used on CMs with similar operating pressures. An Illinois mine decided to implement these concepts on a CM during rebuild stage. Dust control performance of the rebuilt CM was evaluated using gravimetric sampling and real-time monitoring using multiple personal dust monitors (PDMs). The average results based on about 105 cuts show about 30% and 20% reduction in dust exposure for the miner operator, and the haulage unit operator. Visibility in the mining areas was also significantly improved. The coal company has already decided to implement the system on all their CMs.

In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to be done, wet or dry or a combination?

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.

The Southern Peru Copper Corp. (SPCC) recently built an integrated copper project consisting of dump- and heap-leaching operations at its mine complex in Peru. The pregnant leach solution (PLS) containing the solubilized copper from the leaching operations is processed in a new solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) facility to produce high-purity cathode copper. The dump leaching and SX/EW facilities are located near the Toquepala mine site. The crushing and heap-leaching operation is located at the Cuajone Mine. The pregnant leach solution from Toquepala and Cuajone is pumped 35 km (22 miles) to the SX/EW plant at Toquepala. The SX/EW plant consists of three trains of solvent extraction (SX), a tank farm area and an electrowinning (EW) facility. The solvent extraction plant has a total PLS flow capacity of 3,210 m3/hr (113,360 cu ft/hr). The electrowinning facility has an expected long-term production capacity of 97 t/d(107 stpd) or about 35 kt/a (38,500 stpy) of cathode copper. However, present production exceeds the expected long-term by about 20%.

Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrosion rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in commercial mills represents less than 10% of the total loss expressed as micrometers/hour of exposure in recent USBM tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills which indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and for cast irons, M7C3 carbides produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

Significant changes in ownership and production of industrial clays have occurred since 2000. Clays covered in this presentation are kaolins, ball clays, smectites, (bentonite), and palygorskite (attapulgite)-sepiolite. IMERYS discontinued production of paper coating kaolins at their Cornwall operations and have expanded their kaolin production in Brazil. J. M. Huber sold their kaolin operation in Georgia to KaMin whose headquarters are in Ft. Worth, Texas. BASF purchased Engelhard?s kaolin and attapulgite operations in Georgia. ActiveMinerals purchased Southeastern Kaolin in South Carolina, Wilkinson County Kaolin in Gordon, Georgia, and Zemex Attapulgite in Quincy, Florida. Chemical Lime purchased Spinks Ball Clay Company in Paris, Tennessee. Most of the ball clays used in Italy and Eastern Europe comes from expanded operations in the Ukraine. Bentonite operations have expanded production in Wyoming and Montana because of strong demand for drilling mud, foundries, cat litter, and iron ore pelletizing. The production and exports of palygorskite in China continues to increase. Nanoclays utilizing sodium montmorillonite, palygorskite, and halloysite are actively being developed.

Surface coal mines in West Virginia are receiving stringent NPDES discharge limits for total recoverable selenium. With limits in the low parts-per-billion range, selection and implementation of proper sample collection and analytical methods are imperative for quality assurance and control and for consistency in results. Given the typical oxidized form of selenium in the water, the low limits and the large and variable flow rates from the watersheds, end-of-pipe treatment is difficult and cost-prohibitive to implement. Discharge locations in the remote and steep terrain exacerbate the problem. To evaluate options for end-of-pipe treatment at a Patriot Coal Corporation surface mining operation in West Virginia, CH2M HILL performed wastewater characterization for a range of key constituents and selenium species at three outfalls for selection and preliminary sizing of appropriate treatment processes. A preliminary evaluation of base and wet-weather flows was done to understand flow variability considerations for discharges. A conceptual evaluation of technologies to treat selenium to permitted levels was conducted in con-junction with order-of-magnitude life-cycle cost estimates.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.
