This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

In central Utah, a coal mining operation is taking place under an 0.5-m (20-in.) pressurized natural gas pipeline. The room-and-pillar method with pillar extraction is being used to extract the coal from the seams. The pillars beneath the pipeline will not be extracted; however, there is a possibility that some subsidence may occur due to pillar failure. To assess possible damages on the pipeline, an attempt has been made to predict subsidence in the area where pillars may collapse. The resultant values of subsidence strain and slope have been used to determine the magnitude of strain, stress, and shear induced in the pipeline. Also, a network of survey points has been installed along the pipeline to detect ground move¬ment that would indicate excessive subsidence.

The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

A novel form of calibration of on-line analyzers was implemented. Rather than simple equations, a neural network was used to model the relationship between the scintillation counts (Am and Cs) of an analyzer, and the measured ash for improved on-line analysis of run-of-mine (r.o.m.) coal. Also, a new approach was followed to better evaluate neural network performance. Samples were first divided into various statistically different groups using a Kohonen network. Data was then selected for the training, calibration and prediction subsets, using criteria developed in this paper for sparse data, with representation from each group. A backpropagation based neural network architecture was used in conjunction with quick stop training. Due to noise in the data, the predictions were very good on average, but not individually.

A physical and chemical characterization study was carried out on 483 kaolin samples from 2.9 km2area at the Para Pigmentos mine along the Capim river, northern Brazil. The samples obtained from cores, drilled with regular spacing of 100 m, were evaluated using grit percentage, particle size distribution (psd), brightness, leachability, magnetic response and viscosity. These parameters were correlated with each process step in the plant and also the physical and chemical properties of the ore and finished product. Cluster analysis was performed and four main groups of kaolin were identified. These were then related to their performance at the various process steps and the quality of the initial product. These groups are well defined by plotting grit X “psd” and TiO2x “psd” in scatter plots.

Offshore mining of placer diamond deposits along the coast of South Africa and Namibia has become a multi-scale activity. It is a successful offshoot of a land-based mining industry that has operated along the coastline for more than 80 years. Onshore diamond deposits have been worked by several methods from the foreshore to some kilometers inland (Hodgen). These deposits are the foundation of an ongoing industry along the coastline. The offshore diamond industry began in the late 1950s and has now come of age. Diamonds are produced along 800 km (500 miles) of coastline in water 200 m (660 ft) deep. About half of the coastline is in Namibia, north of the Orange River that defines the border with South Africa. The other half is in South Africa.

One of the Swiss transalpine highways includes two remarkable tunnels: the 16.3 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel and the 9.3 km long twin tube Seelisberg Tunnel, both presently under construction. Large diameter shafts up to 900 m long are required for ventilation. Excavation techniques for rock formations ranging from loose sedimentary rock to granite and very hard siliceous limestone were carefully evaluated. The methods finally applied include excavation of shafts in hard rock, conventional drilling and blasting, excavation by ripper-tooth excavator ("Big John") in marlstone, shield protected heading in loose material and soft rock, and tunnel and shaft lining, both by poured concrete and by prefabricated elements. A critical review of the success of these methods can now be made after a five year construction period.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals found in the earth's crust. Its availability, attractive physical properties and relatively low processing cost make CaCO3 the most widely used filler material today. It is mined in three different forms - chalk, limestone and marble. Each physical form of CaCO3 has different qualities due to differences in postdepositional geology. But the chemical composition remains the same, with CaCO3 an inert component of the finished product. In the past, the paper industry largely left CaCO3 by the wayside, as it cannot withstand the acid-based papermaking process. But conversion to an alkaline system by many US mills changed this picture. Carbonate suppliers have put time and effort into research and development, demolishing barriers and creating new possibilities for what is a simple, natural product. By controlling particle size, size distribution and particle charge, the industry uses ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as a performance enhancer and as an extender for more expensive ingredients. It is estimated that the United States uses 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (4 to 4.5 million stpy) of CaCO3. Consolidations and mergers are taking place in the industry. Of the 12 major GCC producers in operation nine years ago, seven are left. Mineral Technology (US) is the dominant precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) producer with more than 50 satellite plants worldwide. Other producers include Georgia Marble (French); Franklin Industries (US); OMYA (Swiss); J.M. Huber (US); ECC (English); and Filler Products (US). Global Stone PenRoc (Canada) is the only newcomer. In addition to this group, there are three small producers left in North America, each with a capacity of less than 100 kt/ a (.110,000 stpy). The trade organization operating as the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association renamed itself the Pulverized Mineral Division, to increase its membership pool. The US paper industry is a predominant GCC con¬sumer, using approximately 800 kt/a (882,000 stpy) at an approximate cost of $130/t ($1.43/st). European paper mills pioneered alkaline papermaking. In the early 1960s, they began using GCC as filler and soon thereafter added GCC to their coating formulations. A decade later, the North American paper industry followed suit. The conversion from acid to alkaline paper production benefits the economic and performance aspects of the industry. Less pulp is needed, paper machine maintenance and effluent treatment costs are reduced, and sheet strength, opacity and brightness are increased. Perhaps most important to the reader, the sheet is desensitized to ultraviolet light, extending the paper's archival ability. CaCO3 can provide the papermaker with additional control of his paper. For example, PCC has long supplied the tobacco industry with a means to slow down the burning rate of cigarettes. Due to enhanced performance with regard to bulk and opacity, filler PCC use has risen to 1,500 kt/a (1,650 stpy) in the United States, at an approximate price of $130/t ($143/st). The majority is produced onsite at the paper mill, using "satellite plants." This concept reduces freight cost because only quicklime (CaO) is shipped to the mill, not CaCO3 slurry. The future of CaCO3 is encouraging. The amount of natural ground CaCO3 used is expected to double by the year 2005 to approximately 8 Mt (8.8 million st) worldwide. Acid papermaking practices will feel an increasing pressure to convert to an alkaline process as larger volumes of GCC containing paper enter the recycling market. CaCO3 reserves are plentiful. They will supply the ever growing demand for increasingly sophisticated paper. The plastics industry is supplied with almost 900 kt/ a (990,000 stpy) GCC at an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The price of a functional, inorganic filler, surface modified for the plastics industry, has an average selling price of $220/t ($243/st). GCC represents the most common filler, creating a product with higher gloss, better dielectric properties, impact resistance, weatherability and shrinkage control. CaCO3-filled plastics surround us - auto hubcaps and dashboards, shower enclosures, floor tiles, wire coatings, microwave dishes and Tupperware. The caulking and sealant industry is an enormous GCC user, with annual consumption requiring 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st) at about $44/t ($48.50/ st). Caulking and sealant may be highly filled with GCC yet undergo no adverse flow effects, with a narrow particle-size-distribution filler decreasing the binder demand. The CaCO3 industry, as well as the carpet industry, are more or less tied to the growth rates of the construction industry. It is estimated that the carpet industry uses some 680 kt/a (750,000 stpy) of GCC at about $25/t ($27.50/st). The paint industry uses approximately 300 kt/a (331,000 stpy) at a 1 % to 1.5% annual growth rate. Here, too, GCC is the dominant filler. It is used to enhance flow characteristics and color uniformity. It also extends costly titanium dioxide, creates sheen and controls roughness, hardness and tack. More CaCO3 should be used in the future as industry shifts from solvent-free or water-based formulations that can accommodate higher GCC volumes. CaCO3 is not imported or exported in any great quantity. Most areas have reserves of their own and the selling price is relatively low. Even so, quality varies from deposit to deposit. As our needs become morespecific, it remains a challenge to provide varying industries with a fitting product.

This paper summarizes the research effort that was conducted as part of a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Company. The objective of this investigation was to further the understanding of the floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is both economically and structurally undesirable. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with an underground opening. This redistribution of stresses may cause roof or pillar problems that otherwise would not have occurred. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley coalbed is not cons1dered to be caused by "squeezing" or plastic flow of the materials involved. The "squeezing" type floor heave is normally associated with relatively weak floor members that contain significant amounts of clay mineralization. The floor members in the Beckley coalbed are competent, relatively strong materials which fail in a manner that can best be described by the term "buckling." This buckling-type failure is indirectly related to the time-dependent deformation properties of the materials involved, but is considered to be more of a slender column, or panel, type failure than a "squeeze" or "flow"-related failure. The Beckley coalbed has had a history of floor heave ground control problems. The Glen Rogers mine, which opened in the 1920's, experienced extensive floor heave. In a report dated April 1929, James P. Keatley of the West Virginia State Department of Mines described the floor heave in the Glen Rogers mine. Several observations listed in the Glen Rogers report that appear to be consistent with current observations follow: 1. Water plays no apparent part in the floor heave process. 2. No evidence of gas has been found in the floor. 3. The thickness of the overburden, which varies from 183 to 396 m (600 to 1300 ft), has no relationship to the floor heave. In the conclusions of the 1929 report on the Glen Rogers mine, Keatley states, "A statement in brief as to the cause (of floor heave) would lie that an undetermined natural condition doubtless augmented by former and present mining methods causes the bottom to heave." As this report will show, Mr. Keatley's insight into the problem was most accurate. The "undetermined natural condition" is the existence of a biaxial, horizontal, compressive stress field. This stress field is in excess of that which would be expected from gravity loading. This stress field and the material properties of the floor rock combine to cause the floor heave that has been experienced. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley seam generally occurs as arching, with a tension fracture, near the center of the floor span or as a break near the rib followed by vertical deflection (of the floor) at the rib and sloping of the floor across the entry. Examples of the floor heave are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The two types of floor heave are merely different manifestations of the same basic failure mechanism. When the entries experiencing floor heave were identified on a map of the mine under investigation, it was apparent that there was a relationship between the floor heave and the direction of the entries. The main entries, which are used for ventilation and haulage, experienced the majority of the floor heave. This directional relationship suggested a directionally related loading mechanism, or more specifically, a biaxial, horizontal stress field that exceeds what would be expected by gravity loading. Since the main entries were oriented at a bearing of N25oW, it was hypothesized that the maximum compressive component of the horizontal stress field was at 90° to these entries or at a bearing of N65oE. An in Situ testing program was developed to test this hypothesis and investigate the floor heave problem.

INTRODUCTION The two basic types of mine-air compressors are the positive-displacement compressors and the dynamic compressors. Positive-displacement compressors con¬fine successive volumes of air within a closed space and increase the pressure by reducing the volume of that space. Reciprocating and rotary compressors operate on this principle. Dynamic compressors utilize an impeller to acceler¬ate the air, with the increased air velocity converted to pressure through a stationary diffuser. Centrifugal compressors and turbocompressors operate on this principle. Reciprocating Compressors Reciprocating compressors include both single-stage and multistage units. For mine service the most com¬mon is the two-stage intercooled compressor having an atmospheric pressure intake and a discharge pressure of 689 to 861 kPa (100 to 125 psi). The cylinders of a reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting. In the single-acting cylinder, compression occurs on only one side of the piston, while, in double¬acting cylinders, compression occurs on both sides of the piston. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a typical two-stage double-acting water-cooled reciprocat¬ing compressor. Fig. 2 illustrates the sequence of opera¬tions occurring in the cylinder of a reciprocating com¬pressor. Most modern mine compressors are double acting and are driven by electric motors. Induction motors are used on low-powered compressors, and synchronous motors are used on larger compressors. Steam-driven compressors once were common and still are applied where a reliable source of low-cost steam is available. For this type of compressor, steam is a desirable power source since a governor that senses the discharge pres¬sure can be used to control the steam inlet. This can be used to regulate the compressor speed to compress only air sufficient to meet the mine's requirements (up to the capacity of the unit). Unlike a constant-speed electric¬driven compressor, no other regulation is required for the cylinders of a steam-driven unit. Rotary Compressors Rotary compressors include sliding-vane, liquid¬piston, two-impeller straight-lobe or cycloidal, and helical-lobe units. Each of these has specific advantages and applications. Of these, the helical-lobe or "screw" compressor has the greatest application for supplying "100-lb air" [689 kPa (100 psi) ] to small- and medium¬size underground mines. Fig. 3 illustrates the operation of a sliding-vane compressor. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of a helical lobe or screw compressor. Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of a two-impeller straight-lobe compressor. Fig. 6 illustrates the operation of a liquid¬piston compressor. Centrifugal Compressors Centrifugal compressors deliver 0.94 m3/s (2000 cfm) or more of air, and they are best suited to supply¬ing large volumes of compressed air for base loads. The efficiency of a centrifugal compressor declines rapidly when its operation deviates from its design point. If the power cost is not a critical consideration, a centrif¬ugal compressor is attractive as a result of the low initial and installation costs and the high degree of reliability. Fig. 7 illustrates a typical four-stage centrif¬ugal compressor, and Fig. 8 is a cross section of this type of unit. COMPRESSOR SELECTION The process of selecting a compressor requires sev¬eral considerations, including the capacity, the control system, the location, the power supply, and the cooling provisions. Compressor Capacity To determine the required capacity, the total air quantity and pressure requirements must be calculated. The air consumption of various tools, as listed in Table 1, must be included in this calculation. Some of the other considerations include: 1) The correction factor for altitude, as listed in Table 2, must be included in the calculation. While pneumatic tools require additional compressed air as the altitude increases, the compressor produces less. 2) A correction factor must be incorporated for the use of multiple tools. Table 3 lists appropriate correc¬tion factors for rock drills.

INTRODUCTION The Uranium Epidemiology Study at the University of New Mexico was initiated in 1977 with the objective of assessing health effects of uranium mining in the Grants, New Mexico, area. The planned approach was a cohort study of mortality that would capitalize on the availability of health records at the Grants Clinic. During the first year, emphasis was placed on determining the feasibility of the proposed study: Were adequate records available? What was the quality of available information? Could a cohort be established? The first year's work confirmed the study's feasibility (Buechley, 1979). Subsequent efforts have focused on the health and exposure data base and comprehensive follow-up. A retrospective cohort study of early miners is in progress; a prospective cohort study of miners who began working under the current Federal standard is planned. This report will summarize the current status of the Uranium Epidemiology Study. A chronology of the study's activities follows (Table 1). TABLE 1. BACKGROUND Uranium Mining in New Mexico The Grants, New Mexico, uranium belt measures some 110 by 25 miles in Cibola, McKinley, and Sandoval counties (Kelley, 1963). The three chief mining districts are, from east to west, Laguna, Grants, and Gallup. Average annual production was about 5,500 tons, or 45% of United States uranium, from 1966 through 1978. Despite a drop in this figure in 1979, to 40%, New Mexico still leads the nation in uranium reserves and production (Hatchell, 1981). In 1918 carnotite, a yellow uranium vanadate, was identified in the Shiprock area (Chenoweth and Learned, 1980; N.M. Energy and Minerals Department, 1981). It received little attention at the time because of its apparently limited volume. In 1950 an important uranium outcropping was discovered by chance in limestone at Haystack Butte, northwest of Grants. In 1951 deposits were discovered in sandstone at Poison Canyon, north of Grants, and at Jackpile, northeast of Laguna. In 1955 finding of radioactive cuttings at an abandoned oil test site near Ambrosia Lake led to drilling and discovery of the first underground deposits (Melancon, 1963). Ore bodies were also found near Church Rock in the 1950's (Rautman, 1977). A uranium rush followed. At various times during 1952-1962, 60 mines and 5 mills were in operation (Gay, 1963). In the early 1960's the price of uranium fell, and many miners left the area. Subsequent market fluctuations have produced shutdowns and consolidations, development and expansion. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo' where svo' is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. "The kinetics of leaching of a saprolitic ore from Indonesia by citric acid solution under atmospheric pressure was investigated. An examination of the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, pulp density and ore particle size on the dissolution rate of nickel found that they all had significant influence on the rate. The highest nickel recovery (95.6 percent) was achieved under the leaching conditions of ore particle size of 212-355 microns, citric acid concentration of 1 M, leaching time of 15 days, pulp density of 20 weight/volume percent, leaching temperature of 40°C and shaker speed of 200 rpm. The shrinking core model was found to be appropriate for describing the leaching kinetics of this ore in citric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experimental data were well interpreted by this model with rate of reaction controlled by diffusion through the solid product layer. Using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy for nickel dissolution was evaluated as 12.38 kJ/mol. Finally, on the basis of the shrinking core model, a proposed empirical kinetic model for the leaching of nickel from this Indonesian saprolitic ore was expressed as a mathematical model, which was verified as consistent with the observed experimental results.IntroductionIndonesia has some of the world’s largest nickel laterite reserves and was the largest producer of nickel – in the form of nickel lateritic ores – in the world in 2013 (Merchant Research and Consulting Ltd, 2014). However, only high-grade saprolites are processed in Indonesia using pyrometallurgical methods to produce ferronickel and nickel matte. Lower-grade saprolites and limonites are removed, becoming waste or overburden in mining site areas. Hydrometallurgical methods, involving either chemical leaching or bioleaching, are now seen as the most important technologies for treating nickel laterites in the future because of their advantage of not only extracting nickel and iron but also other valuable elements. In addition, hydrometallurgical methods consume less energy and have lower capital and operational costs. Although they are recognized to be more suited to limonites, some researchers have studied their use in the extraction of nickel and other metals from saprolites (Guo et al., 2009; Lu et al., 2013). The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine in western Colorado with multiple mine openings, waste rock piles, and adit seepages that Cyprus Climax Metals Company (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary) voluntarily remediated through the Colorado Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCUP). The process to obtain a No Further Action determination from the VCUP is presented. Water treatment of the adit discharge, which is not part of the VCUP, is also presented. The remedial action objectives (RAOs) included preventing direct human or biotic exposure to the waste rock and radiation emitting from the waste rock; reducing metal concentrations and radionuclide activities in adit discharge and keeping the discharge from leaving the site; maintaining the existing undeveloped character of the surrounding landscape; and eliminating the need for a stormwater permit. The design included regrading, installation of an infiltration barrier and rock cover, a diversion channel, and a biologically based passive remediation water treatment system. An initial lab-scale evaluation provided design criteria for the full-scale system, which consists of a sulfate-reducing biochemical reactor and post-treatment aerobic polishing cells. The system has been operational since construction was completed in late 2016. Results indicate that the treatment objective of 90% bulk removal of constituents of potential concern (COPCs) is largely being met. The system also provides year-round operation and non-point discharge of effluent. After 20 plus years of site investigations, the remedial action was completed in 2016 with all RAOs met and a No Further Action determination granted in 2018. INTRODUCTION The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine located approximately 11 miles north-northeast of Rifle, in Garfield County, Colorado. It was leased and operated intermittently from 1929 to 1975 but was never operated by Cyprus Climax Metals Company (Cyprus) (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary). Prior to reclamation, site features included: • six mine openings—five adits and a vertical opening; • two adits discharging mining-influenced water (MIW)— Adit 1 at less than 4 liters per minute (L/min) and Adit 2 at 7 to 10 L/min; • main waste rock pile (13,500 m3) and small waste rock pile (minimal volume); • debris (small structure, mattress, bottles, shells, etc.) indicating site used for recreational purposes; and, • unimproved road, which has been used to access forest fires.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."
