Conditional bias occurs when the expected value of the true grade conditional on the estimated grade is not equal to the estimated grade. It is a quantification of how the average of estimates differs from the true value. Conditional bias is present in all resource estimates due to the unavoidable properties of kriging, and indeed all linear estimation (regression) methods. In a mining resource estimation context, the degree of conditional bias is dependent on the spacing of the conditioning data; more data leads to the expectation of less conditional bias This paper discusses conditional bias from two perspectives: 1. 2. Estimates seeking to eliminate, as much as possible, conditional bias; and Estimates that accept a larger amount of conditional bias in resource models, in order to achieve a specific outcome. The problem of conditional bias in estimation can only be fully appreciated if the objective or purpose of a resource model is understood. There are instances where conditional bias should be avoided because it is not reasonable to make decisions using estimates that are known to be wrong in expected value; for example, when making a final decision in grade control with respect to the destination of the material. In most instances in the mining resource estimation context, however, the estimated values will not be “final estimates”, but “interim estimates”, meaning that in the future more data will be obtained, and the ”interim estimate” will then be updated. In this context, the most useful resource model is an interim model that is able to predict the final model estimates, despite not having all the data available that will be collected in the future. This is the objective, for example, of a recoverable “long-term” model developed prior to operating a mine, for example at the feasibility stage. It attempts to predict the ore that a processing plant will receive, well into the future. In such cases, it can be unequivocally demonstrated that conditional bias is not only unavoidable, it is a necessity.

This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models. Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. The improvement of coal waste management practices, through the co-disposal of waste rock with sulphur-lean fine waste tailings (<1 mm in size), can potentially mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD). On exposure to natural oxidants, the sulphide compounds present in mine discards generate acidity, creating a cyclical oxidation process intensified by iron and sulphur oxidising microorganisms. To inhibit the emergence of ARD, a stable mine dump may be constructed that is structurally stable and incompressible through the mixing of complementary waste fractions that reduce voids and access to acid generating surfaces. However, large voids manifest as scale increases, due to decreased particle interlock, enabling the unrestricted access of oxidants leading to the early onset of ARD. To avoid this phenomenon, enhanced packing approaches based on geochemical and geotechnical characterisation tests were employed to improve bed stability. These were assessed for long-term prevention using aggressive oxidative conditions typical of heap leaching applications. Favourable results were obtained for both blended and multi-layered systems. However, long-term success was most notable in beds with alternating layers of waste rock and fine waste tailings with co-mingled systems being more susceptible to failure. Deconstructed co-disposed beds provided valuable insight into post-leach structural transformations. Results indicated that relative changes in initial coarse discards to fine waste ratios were most notable in blended systems. Mass fractions of the comparatively more mobile fine wastes increased axially down these test columns that ultimately resulted in increased contact of oxidants with the acid generating waste discards. Conversely, more consistent ratios were observed in multi-layered configurations. In these systems, near impervious hardpans were created by the moisture retaining fine tailings, forming stable structures with neutralising barriers sustained at each alternating layer. Consistent with post-leach geotechnical characteristics, static acid-base accounting tests showed that the uppermost sections of blended systems were more susceptible to oxidation due to structural failure with fine particles migration, while the more stable multi-layered configuration evenly maintained neutralising capacity. "Fuzzy-weighted integer goal programming has been developed and used to select the most suitable site to construct a central processing plant for several adjacent small-scale dimension stone quarries, based on the most effective criteria. In the first step of mathematical modelling, the most important goals and decision variables were defined. Accordingly, an objective function was used in the model for minimizing the sum of undesired fuzzy-weighted deviations. Fuzzy weights were determined by a matrix of pairwise comparisons of various expert judgments in this field and the fuzzy geometric mean. The goal and systemic constraints were also modelled. The most suitable site for the construction of the plant was selected after solving the mathematical model in the ExcelR Solver add-in. The selected site had various advantages over the other sites, such as the shortest average distance to the quarries, the shortest distance to power access and workforce, and the lowest land price. IntroductionSelection of the most suitable site of a plant is one of the most important considerations when constructing an industrial project. A suitable site has a significant effect on a company's competitiveness in the market. Selecting a desirable location for constructing plants such as mineral processing facilities is an essential part of the economic planning that will enable a company to meet the needs of related upstream and downstream operations. These units are considered to be best built near the relevant mining sites because of technical difficulties, the cost of transporting minerals, and the traffic hazard caused by the movement of trucks transporting materials. Two main types of research using multiattribute decision-making models have been reported for selection of a processing plant site (Safari et al. 2010, 2012). In that research, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach were applied to select the suitable locations for the mineral processing plants for phases 1 and 2 of Sangan iron ore mine."

The BCL furnace is scheduled to restart operations after being placed on care and maintenance in 2016 due to depressed nickel prices. The decision to start operations after such a stoppage ought to be led by a techno-economic evaluation of process options to make operations more resilient. For BCL, the decision lies between using the existing flash-smelting furnace (FSF) or a top-submerged lance (TSL) furnace. Available studies show that the FSF combined with other converting technologies is cheaper to operate; however, such studies are based on flowsheet simulation results of single copper concentrates and therefore do not provide a full scope of practical capabilities based on smelter operator skills. Using a t-test on normalized prior operational data from three Cu FSF and two Cu TSL, it was found that the only statistical differences between the operating costs of the FSF and TSL technologies are in the coal use for heating the feed blow and number of rebuilds: the FSF consumes coal to heat the feed blow and the TSL requires 2.4 rebuilds during a course of a single FSF campaign. A summative operating cost comparison over the existing BCL FSF 11-year life shows that BCL can decrease operational costs by some BWP 55.5 million if the operation were to change to the newer TSL technology. The savings derive from reduced coal use, which is normally associated with heating the blow when using the FSF. Despite the TSL carrying added costs of 2.4 rebuilds during a life time of one FSF furnace campaign, the cost associated with the TSL rebuilds of approximately BWP 1.3 million is minimal compared with the overall operational expenditure decrease that BCL will incur on using the TSL technology. In terms of the technology, BCL can have higher Ni–Cu recoveries at lower operational costs by elimination of Ni–Cu losses and eliminating the slag-cleaning furnace by converting to a TSL furnace.

The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. It is not uncommon for gold slurry ponds or screen oversize dumps to contain several different types of carbon-rich contaminants. These contaminants act as robbers of dissolved gold which has a detrimental effect during the downstream carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processes. With a renewed interest in the reprocessing of contaminated gold waste ponds and dumps, preconcentration of the feed to either the CIL or CIP process becomes important to maximise profits from these resources. An added advantage in removing these resources, which were once thought of as being uneconomical, is the availability of land that can further be rehabilitated for community development projects. For gravity separation, an example of suitable technology is the Reflux Classifier (RC), which can be used for the separation of materials of different densities and can be used as a pre-concentration step. In this project, a laboratory-scale Reflux Classifier was used to pre-concentrate a gold-bearing sample obtained from a waste dump situated to the east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The material had an average gold grade of 1.9 g/ton and a carbon content of 10%. This material was first fed to a semi-batch Reflux Classifier that was used to fractionate it into several different density intervals by varying the fluidisation water feed rate, followed by continuous runs at fixed water flow rates. The results showed that a cumulative gold recovery of 60%, carbon recovery of 85%, and mass pull of 41% was possible for a fluidisation water feed rate of 15 L/min, while a rate of 20 L/min resulted in a gold recovery, carbon recovery and mass pull of 83%, 92% and 79% respectively, which translated into a concentrate gold grade above the set target of 3 g/ton. Continuous operation at 20 L/min yielded an underflow stream with 84% gold recovery at a grade of 5.4 g/ton. Keywords: Reflux Classification, gold recovery

Statistics is essentially a study of variability, the use of some suitable mathematical model representative of such variability, and the application of this inferred pattern of behaviour to practical problems. Probability theory is the mathematical structure devised for providing models for chance happenings. Perhaps the simplest example of a chance happening is the result obtained in tossing a coin. Although the result of a single toss can never be predicted with certainty, there is no reason why in repeated tosses the expectancy of heads and tails should not be equal. In such a case the outcomes of the experiment are said to be equally likely, so that the probability of obtaining heads (or tails) is 1 in 2, that is, 0,5. This simple probability .model refers to a &apos;mathematical&apos; or &apos;unbiased&apos; coin. Whether such probabilities are meaningful for actual coins tossed in any particular way is a matter for experience to determine. Probability models have also provided the basis for representing observed variability in cases where the actual under- lying probabilities are only partly known or defy analysis. A typical example of the latter case is the variability observed in the values obtained from gold or other ore samples. The interacting natural forces which gave rise to this variability are obviously very complex and are unlikely ever to be unravelled completely. In spite of this, probability theory and the more recent geostatistical theories have provided us with models which can represent this variability on a reasonable basis. Applied statistics and geostatistics must therefore never be accepted as exact mathematical sciences. Furthermore, a basic and essential concept is that in the type of applications covered in these notes, no model must ever be accepted as necessarily the final and exact answer to the problem; thus, any model must prove and continue to prove its appropriateness in practice, preferably by follow-up comparisons.

Two examples are presented to show how first-principles – physical-dynamic, here termed behavioural modelling, is used to build digital twins of unit processes or plant sections. A digital twin equips the metallurgist, engineer, or manager with a powerful tool to conduct model-based design, solve process problems and improve operations. It is particularly relevant in the metallurgical industry where plant behaviour is highly integrated, rates respond to particle dynamics in complicated ways and mineral flows across flowsheet boundaries are variable. The two examples used to illustrate the behavioural modelling methodology are 1) a flotation column unit block and 2) a multi-compartment pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave. It simultaneously accounts for the causality of material and heat flow, takes care of mineral particle dynamics, physical and chemical reaction rates, the plant control system behaviour and operating heuristics. The basic modelling building blocks are briefly reviewed to show how the behavioural modelling attributes constrain the mass and heat flow dynamics to physically realistic values. This is the key aspect that allows project value to be created with minimal input data. Behavioural modelling is especially valuable where the process dynamics are poorly understood or controlled, where data-driven models fail to cope with complex and highly integrated plant behaviour, where quality data is lacking or limited funds are available to generate the data required to fill all the knowledge gaps. The paper uses the flotation column example to show how behavioural modelling and simulation can be used to optimise plant performance, while the multi-compartment POX autoclave model shows how it can be used to diagnose process problems. It also provides a solid basis to add a data-driven component – in other words, it makes a strong case for a hybrid first-principle– data-driven approach to solve process problems, especially where microscopic-level understanding is poor. Most of the Au and PGM ores in Russia are characterised by a thin mineral impregnation of noble metals in sulfide minerals, and a large variety of mineral forms that lead to high loss of precious metals with fine fractions during flotation. In modern flotation technology, the rational choice of reagents is one of the main trends for selective separation of minerals and effective metals recovery. New data on the selectivity of the thermo-sensitive polymer with specific functional groups (TMPPh) as a flocculant and collector of Au and Pt fine fractions are available. The selective modified collector (DEDTCm) for the recovery of Au and Pt from complex ores is discussed in this paper. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy, UV and IR spectroscopy were applied to study the adsorbed layer of new reagents on the mineral surface. Flotation tests of TMPPh on the gold-bearing ore of the Olimpiada deposit showed an increase in Au extraction and Au content in the concentrate of the rougher flotation. Using a combination of reagents TMPPh and ButX, the quality of the Au and Pt concentrates increased in 1.7 time with an increase in recovery up to 15 % compared with the traditional reagent mode. Testing of TMPPh polymers in flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni ore at Norilsk Nickel has shown the ability to obtain a concentrate with a higher Pt content. Recovery of platinum is 17% higher than recovery in an experiment without polymer. Application of DEDTCm helped to achieve higher technological parameters in flotation of lowgrade Rt-Cu-Ni ore. Compared to the basic mode Pt recovery was plus 13%, Pd recovery was plus 9% and the content of precious metals in the rougher flotation concentrate increased in 2,5 - 4 times. "Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) are extensively used in the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals industries to remove iron and sulphur from the molten matte phase. This technology has not changed significantly since its inception in the early 20th century. The typical converting operation involves lateral purging of air/oxygen-enriched air into molten matte through a bank of tuyeres. This blowing operation occurs at low air pressure from the blowers, and the induced bubbling regime is considered inefficient from both a process and an energy utilization perspective. Inherent drawbacks include recurrent tuyere blockage, inevitable tuyere punching operation to clear airways, and low oxygen efficiency as a result of substantial air losses due to leakages.Investigations in the 1980s demonstrated1 that jetting into Cu and Ni converters could reduce or eliminate some of the process difficulties. In spite of these findings, very little progress has been made in the application of these concepts for converting of non-ferrous melts on a commercial scale.As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction initiative, Western Platinum embarked on a full-scale industrial evaluation of generating a jetting regime by using sonic injection. Prior to full-scale industrial evaluation, a numerical assessment was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of implementing sonic injection on Lonmin converters. The work included flow characterization at high injection pressures achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit. The 2D and 3D simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were applied using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT.This paper discusses the key findings regard ing understanding of gas plume extension, velocity distribution, shear wall stress analysis, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. Plant trials are also discussed with reference to the commercial aspects of a fullscale implementation of sonic injection in the smelter."

"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. In November 2009 Mintek installed the FloatStar? advanced flotation stabilization system on Vale&apos;s Cauê iron ore beneficiation plant in Brazil. In September 2010 the system was upgraded to include flotation optimization. The circuit consisted of two parallel cleaner circuits producing final concentrate. The tailings from the cleaner section passed through a scavenger circuit. Large, well-instrumented feed sumps played an important role in circuit stability, presenting a good opportunity for advanced control. Previously the plant was controlled using distributed control system (DCS) level control only. The flotation circuit processes roughly 30kt/day. The FloatStar system provided advanced control of the flotation circuit as well as of the sumps feeding the circuit. The system underwent a lengthy trial to assess the benefit that it provided. Two data sets were analysed, showing performance under advanced stabilization and optimization respectively. Several validation and consistency criteria were employed to ensure the quality of the analysis. Iron recovery and iron tailings grade were used to measure system performance. The analysis showed that the system increased recovery by up to 2.7%. In addition, the system decreased the iron tailings grade by between 1.2% (from 23.5% to 22.3%) and 4.3% (from 31.3% to 27.0%) during different test campaigns. The analysis also showed that the entire FloatStar stabilization system was active for 72.7% of the time from first activation to the end of the first data set (approximately 200 days). From the analysis it was concluded that under similar conditions for &apos;ON&apos; and &apos;OFF&apos; tests, the system provides a clear benefit. It was also found that over the longer term, the system continues to provide a benefit. This finding suggests that the results were not simply due to a short-term advantage. The size of the data set, as well as the magnitude of the recovery improvements, lends considerable confidence to these results. Therefore, it can be concluded that the FloatStar control system provides substantial benefit to operations at this site.

"Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in copper hydrometallurgical flow sheets. The mineralogy of the ores of the African Copperbelt, and hence the characteristics of African leach liquors, differs significantly from those in Chile and the southwestern USA, where copper solvent extraction has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors, and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt solvent-extraction technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copperbelt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world, and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flow sheets. IntroductionFollowing the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia, became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for about 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathodeproducing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copperbelt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a, and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Solvay Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as ‘Rest-of-World’)."

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). In 2001 Platinum overtook gold in foreign revenue earnings for South Africa. The export sales from platinum group metals amounted to R29.3 billion as opposed to gold export sales of R28.6billion1. Organizations must undertake new ventures to replace old, worn-out and obsolete assets with new ones. These assets could be a building, a new product or process, a new mine, or anything that can help the organization to achieve its objective. These ventures are projects by their nature. When a project is pronounced a success, the judgement is usually based on some factual evidence, although not every one uses the same data. From the literature, it is obvious that there is a lack of consensus and objectivity as to what constitutes a successful project. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: ?What constitutes a successful project? ? How does one measure project success? ?How can one work toward project success? This paper addresses the requirements for project success of three of the primary stakeholders of a project, namely the business or client, the employees as far as the project team is concerned, and the local community. Indicators are developed into a work breakdown structure (WBS)-like chart to demonstrate success indicators. These indices take cognisance of all the constituents required for project success. The indicators are further developed to take cognisance of the requirements of the local communities. These indices are then weighted to arrive at a total score for the respective stakeholders. Using these WBS models, the success and performance of a project can be evaluated. This score is considered an objective measure of project success. Projects are evaluated more consistently across different projects and the project manager is provided with a management tool that can assist him/her in ensuring greater project success. The shortcoming of this approach is that the weights of the different indices have been estimated at this stage. Research will have to be conducted to more accurately reflect the weights assigned to the indices.

Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.
