The value of incentive payments in the mining industry by K. SMITH, A.R.S.M., B.Sc. (London) (Member) This paper reviews the history of incentive payments in the mining industry, and gives some indication of the magnitude of improvement that has been achieved by this means in the past. The objective is to promote a more general belief in the efficacy of these methods, and thus to encourage their wider and more effective application by mining engineers in general, and by the rising generation in particular. It is concluded, from a consideration of current productivity levels in the gold-mining industry (still South Africa's leading revenue earner), that further substantial improvement can be achieved by a better understanding of the time-tested principles of incentive payments.

The commissioning of a test facility for the calibration of anemometers by J. J. VAN RENSBURG (Student Member). After the erection of a commercially produced open-jet wind tunnel for the calibration of the anemometers used in mine ventilation, the wind tunnel was calibrated for routine use. There is a choice of five orifice plates. which, together with a variable-speed fan, can give a measurable range of air velocities in the test section from about 0,05 to 35 m/so The orifice plates were calibrated against a standard pitot tube, and it is now necessary only to measure the pressure drop across an orifice plate and to read off, from a set of graphs, the true outlet velocity in the test section. The paper describes the underlying theory and the test results.

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."

The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the project's gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the Lenders' and Borrower's teams has facilitated a greater understanding and `ownership' of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

"In coal mining in China, the cutting height of the shearer in longwall faces is increasing. Owing to the increase of extraction height, the caved roof strata area is enlarged, and new issues are being encountered, such as determination of a suitable working resistance for the shield and control of the roof. Through field observation and theoretical analysis of the first longwall face with a height of 6.0 m in the Bayangaole mine, a three-stage structural model was developed. Stage I is defined as the period in which the lower immediate roof (LIR) caves into the goaf and is broken into irregular shapes of various sizes. Stage II is defined as the period in which the upper immediate roof (UIR) breaks and impacts the LIR. In stage III, the main roof breaks into blocks and then impacts the UIR. With respect to these three stages, a suitable method was identified for calculating the working resistance of the shield support for a super-great mining height longwall face (SGMHLW). Introduction and backgroundThe coal seams in the Shendong coalfield, located in the northwest of China, are characterized by low dips and large thicknesses and are thus suited for full thickness extraction. Since the mid-1990s, the Shendong coalfield has been developed into one of the largest in the world (Ning, Liu, and Tan. 2014; Ning et al., 2017). Recent developments in mining equipment have made it possible extract entire seams up to 5.0 m thick in a single cut. This method, termed the ‘super-great mining height longwall face’ (SGMHLW) method, has been widely adopted in the Shendong coalfield (Table I) (Ju and Xu, 2013; Peng, Li, and Zhou 2015; Zhang, Fan, and Ma 2011). According to some studies, sudden support-closure incidents often occur when using the SGMHLW method. The key to solving this engineering issue is to have a clear understanding of the structural characteristics and movement laws of the overlying strata. For instance, the load on the supports is related to the movement of the roof stratum as a response to the mining activities."

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to predict the average gas holdup and the axial gas holdup variation in a 13.5 m high cylindrical column 0.91 m diameter. The column was operating in batch mode. A Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase approach with appropriate interphase momentum exchange terms was applied to simulate the gas-liquid flow inside the column. Turbulence in the continuous phase was modelled using the k-_ realizable turbulence model. The predicted average gas holdup values were in good agreement with experimental data. The axial gas holdup prediction was generally good for the middle and top parts of the column, but was over-predicted for the bottom part of the column. Bubble velocity profiles were observed in which the axial velocity of the air bubbles decreased with height in the column. This may be related to the upward increase in gas holdup in the column. Simulations were also conducted to compare the gas holdup predicted with the universal, the Schiller-Naumann, and the Morsi-Alexander drag models. The gas holdup predictions for the three drag models were not significantly different. IntroductionColumn flotation is an important concentration technology that is used in the mineral processing and coal beneficiation industries. The growing interest in the use of column flotation in mineral processing has been attributed to the simpler flotation circuits and improved metallurgical performance compared to conventional flotation cells (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Flotation columns have also found other applications outside mineral processing, such as de-inking of recycled paper (Finch and Hardie, 1999).In column flotation, a rising swarm of air bubbles generated by means of air spargers is employed to collect the valuable mineral particles and separate them from the gangue minerals in a countercurrent process. Wash water, which is continuously fed at the top of the column, is used to eliminate entrained particles and stabilize the froth. The column volume can be divided into two sections – the collection zone in which the bubbles collect the floatable mineral particles, and the cleaning zone (or froth zone) where product upgrading is enhanced through the removal of unwanted particles entrained in the water mixed with bubbles from the collection zone."

"In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. The investigations were guided by the method of McCracken and Stacey (1989) together with insights from Peck and associates (Peck, 2000; Peck and Lee, 2007, 2008; Peck, Coombes, and Lee, 2011)."

In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over the base metals, copper, and iron, was achieved with Amberlite PWA-5. Successful elution of these metal cyanides was possible from both Minix and Amberlite PWA-5, using a 2M potassium thiocyanate solution at ambient temperature. Acidic thiourea was unable to elute platinum from either Minix or Amberlite PWA-5. Effective elution of palladium and gold were, however, achieved with use of acidic thiourea. Using these results, two conceptual flow diagrams for the recovery of these metals from cyanide solutions are proposed.

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

An experimental feritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 40 per cent was welded by laser and electron beam (EB) welding processes. These techniques were found to be particularly suited to the welding of this alloy in that the impact toughness of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the laser welds compared favourably with those of the parent aloy. When the EB process was used, the impact toughness of the weld metal was over 180 J/cm2. Grain growth in the HAZ was minimal for welding with these two processes. Corosion tests, conducted in a solution consisting of 20 per cent sulphuric acid and 100 p.p.m. of potassium thiocyanate, and In a highly corrosive industrial solution, indicated that the laser and EB welds were free of sensitization effects, thus confirming the metalographic results.

Ancillary smelter operations and sulphuric acid manufacture at Impala Platinum Limited by R. P. PLASKET. Pr. Eng.. M.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Fellow) and D. A. IRELAND. Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Member) The de-watering, spray drying, and converter operations at Impala are described, aspects that may be new to the minerals industry in South Africa being elaborated. Air-pollution control necessitated the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to limit the emission of sulphur dioxide to the atmosphere. Closer control of the smelting and converting operations was required for successful operation of the acid plant on the inherently Iow and varied concentration of feed gas from converter blowing. Approximately 82 per cent of the sulphur entering the smelter is converted to sulphur dioxide, of which 67 per cent is fed into the sulphuric acid plant.

This paper deals with procedures used for designing pillar systems in hard-rock tabular mines operating at shallow depths, typically less than 1000 m. A comprehensive review if current practice identifies four types if pillars, namely non-yield, yield, crush and barrier pillars, and the main principles for designing these pillars are outlined. It is shown that the current design methods for pillar systems in South Africa are mainly empirical, each mine developing its pillar-design methods based largely on practical experience. This results in varying pillar layouts, even between neighbouring mines, despite similarities in geology, and depth if mining. It is suggested that some current layouts may fall short if being the best as regards safety, the maximum safe extraction percentages, or flexibility in accommodating future mining scenarios in deeper or otherwise different geological conditions.

In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

Small A computer system to aid in the planning of production in mines and its application to a complex colliery are descrIbed, The system consists of three phases, the data base maintenance program the 'production simulator' and the report generation facility, In the first part of the paper the categories of information kept on the data base and the functions of the simulator are described in general terms. The application of the system to a multi-product colliery operating a variety of mining methods in a number of superimposed seams is described m the second part. In conclusion some comments are made on further applications and intended future developments.
