PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

Seismic integration schemes aim to incorporate the rock mass response provided by the historical seismic activity to improve the ability of numerical models to reproduce future response to mining. Up to now, integration schemes considered the events using quasi-static models. This paper presents case studies that consider some of the seismic and modelling issues needed to extend these schemes to include the dynamic characteristics of seismic events. The ultimate aim of an automated integration scheme seems impractical for dynamic modelling. The predictions of the WAVE elastodynamic finite difference program are, however, suitable for modelling limited numbers of events to determine either the near-field velocities and damage or the effect of fractures and excavations on the far-field low frequency response. Les projets d’intégration sismique ont le but d’incorporer la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’activité sismique historique pour améliorer la capacité des modèles numériques à reproduire la réponse future à l’exploitation minière. Jusqu’à présent, les projets d’intégration étudiaient les évènements avec des modèles quasi-statiques. L’étude présente révèle des études de cas qui considèrent certaines des questions concernant modelage et séismes qui sont nécessaires pour porter plus loin ces projets en incluant les caractéristiques dynamiques des évènements sismiques. Le but final d’un projet d’intégration automatisé semble impraticable pour la modélisation dynamique. En revanche, les prédictions du programme élastodynamique par la méthode des différences finies WAVE sont appropriées à la modélisation d’un nombre limité d’évènements de façon à déterminer soit les vitesses à petite échelle et les dommages, soit les effets des fractures et excavations sur la réponse de basse fréquence à grande échelle. Seismische Integrationsschemata zielen darauf ab, Reaktionen der Gesteinsmasse, die von den Berichten seismischer Aktivitäten stammt, zu inkorporieren um numerische Modelle in die Lage zu versetzen, künftige Antwort zum Bergbau zu reproduzieren. Bis dato betrachteten Integrationsschemata die Fälle mit quasi-statischen Modellen. Diese Arbeit stellt Fallstudien dar, die einige der seismischen und modellierenden Fragen betrachten, die benötigt werden, um diese Schemata auszuweiten, um die dynamischen Charakeristika seismischer Fälle einzuschließen. Das Endziel eines automatisierten Integrationschemas erscheint für das dynamisches Berechnen undurchführbar. Die Vorhersagen des WAVE elastodynamisch begrenzten Unterschiedprogramms sind jedoch verwendbar für das Berechnen von begrenzten Anzahlen von Fällen, um entweder die Nahfeldgeschwindigkeiten und Schaden oder den Effekt von Brüchen und Extraktionen auf der Fernfeld Niederfrequenzantwort festzustellen.

In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Dans un effort pour améliorer le rendement et réduire les coûts, AngloGold s’est embarqué dans une opération qui vise à développer et fournir aux chantiers d’extraction et tunnels, sur demande, des produits de construction ou de support basés sur rejets qui sont réguliers et de haute qualité. Une méthode à trois volets a été adoptée : conception, création et livraison. A ce jour, un développement important en laboratoire s’est produit, avec des résultats pleins de promesses, qui semblent indiquer que les buts du projet peuvent être atteints. In der Bemühung, die Effizienz zu steigern und Kosten zu verringern, hat AngloGold begonnen ein Verfahren zu entwickeln welches auf Anfrage konsistent hochqualitative auf Haufwerk basierender Unterstützung oder Bauprodukte für Abbaustellen und Tunnels entwickelt und liefert Eine Dreiphasenplan zur Produktkonzeptualisierung, Design und Lieferung wurde adoptiert. Bis jetzt hat eine substantielle Anzahl an Laborentwicklung mit vielversprechenden Resultaten stattgefunden und aufgezeigt, daß die Projektziele erreichbar sind.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. Rock engineering risk is defined in this paper as a function of the potential ground motion; the vulnerability of the workplace; exposure of people; and a general term – quality of information. The paper describes the development of prototype software that is a combination between an expert system approach for determining overall risk assessment, a risk control recommendation and a basic GIS (Graphic Information System) approach for graphically overlying input parameters and the output risk. The expert system uses a Bayesian probabilistic approach to combine various workplace-related information, a quantified seismological environment and the exposure of underground staff to provide an overall RE risk rating. The risk assessment is dynamic in that it is recalculated each time that any of the input parameters change, for example each time a seismic event is recorded in the area of interest. The code was tested on a data set from Savuka Gold. As risk assessment is not an absolute prediction of a specific outcome, it is therefore not possible to relate to individual case studies and the reliability of this method would only be determined after an extensive period of use with appropiate back-analysis. Le risque dans le génie minier est défini dans cette étude comme une fonction du mouvement potentiel de terrain ; la vulnérabilité du lieu de travail ; l’exposition des personnes ; et un terme général – la qualité de l’information. L’étude présente décrit le développement d’un logiciel prototype qui est une combinaison entre une démarche de système expert pour déterminer une évaluation générale du risque, une recommandation pour le contrôle du risque, et une démarche de SIG (Système d’Information Géographique) pour superposer graphiquement les paramètres d’entrée et le risque de sortie. Le système expert utilise une méthode de probabilité bayésienne pour combiner des informations variées sur le lieu de travail, des données quantifiées sur l’environnement sismique, et l’exposition du personnel travaillant sous terre, pour finalement produire un classement général de risque minier (RE). L’évaluation du risque est dynamique en ce sens qu’elle est recalculée à chaque fois qu’un des paramètres d’entrée change, par exemple à chaque fois qu’un évènement sismique est enregistré dans la région. Le code fut testé sur un ensemble de données obtenues de Savuka Gold. Comme l’évaluation du risque ne constitue pas une prédiction absolue d’un résultat spécifique, elle est par conséquent difficile à rattacher à des cas individuels et la validité de cette méthode ne pourrait être déterminée qu’après une longue période d’utilisation avec analyse rétrospective appropriée. Das Papier beschreibt die Entwicklung einer Prototyp-Software, die eine Kombination zwischen einem Expertensystemzugang für die Bestimmung der gesamten Risikobeurteilung ist, eine Empfehlung zur Risikokontrolle und eines fundamentalen GIS (graphisches Informationssystem) Zuganges für graphisch darüberliegende Eingangsparameter und das Outputrisiko. Das Expertensystem verwendet eine bayesische Wahrscheinlichkeitsannäherung, um verschiedene mit dem Arbeitsplatz in Verbindung stehende Informationen, ein quantitativ bestimmtes seismologisches Umfeld und das Ausgesetztsein des Untertag-Personals zu kombinieren, um eine gesamte RE-Risikobewertung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Risikobeurteilung ist insoferne dynamisch,daß sie stets nachkalkuliert wird wenn sich irgendeiner der Eingangsparameter ändert, z.B. jedesmal wenn ein seismischer Fall im Interessensbereich aufgezeichnet wird. Der Code wurde auf einem Datenbestand von Savuka Gold geprüft. Da die Risikobeurteilung nicht eine absolute Vorhersage eines spezifischen Resultates ist, es ist folglich nicht möglich, sich auf einzelne Fallstudien zu beziehen und die Zuverlässigkeit dieser Methode könnte nur nach einer umfangreichen Benutzungsdauer mit geeigneter Postanalyse bestimmt werden.

Two different methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making have been proposed to solve the problem of mining method selection in the paper titled ?Mining method selection by multiple criteria decision making tool, by Bitarafan and Ataei. This problem is really important and also difficult to solve because of the need of handling many criteria simultaneously in the process of decision making. Bitarafan and Ataei have selected 15 criteria for the case study in their paper and those criteria have not been clustered/grouped yet. The number of selected criteria is only 15, although there are more criteria that should be handled in a real case, because they have used Saaty?s method in the section ?Fuzzy multiple attribute decision making? in their paper. Saaty?s method considers the pair wise comparison of criteria and uses random indexed which have already been derived and published. Available random indexes, however, have been derived for maximum 15 criteria so far.

Large-scale variability in process plants and process control can be identified and controlled through disaggregating the overall variability in a process stream. Conventional statistics and Statistical Process Control (SPC) fail to address the concept of stream heterogeneity, therefore fail to identify and distinguish between the various sources of variability in a process stream. A modified set of 445 data from a process plant is used as an example to explain the benefits of variography in process control. Large-scale variability, usually in the form of product composition cycles and chemical cyclic variations may be manifest throughout a sampling system or a process plant, but this type of variability is most easily discernable in one-dimensional process streams. The Moving Average is a powerful tool for identifying large and small scale variability and cyclical behaviour in process streams, while the variogram is a custom built tool that allows the components of variability to be identified and resolved. The positions in the variogram at which the different variance can be read and the nomenclature of these types of variability is described. The transfer of variances converted to standard deviations to the Control Charts, allows an operator to appreciate the appropriateness of Upper and Lower control and specification limits. The overall contribution of the various sources of variability is represented in a pie diagram.

The international climate regulating environmental management in mining is rapidly evolving through the combined influences of the development of international guidelines, resolutions, protocols, treaties and conventions; the influences of the international lending and aid institutions who seek a consistent but constantly evolving standard of environmental performance from their clients; the legal precedents being developed in courts al over the world; and the activities of multinational countries who tend to rapidly upgrade technological performance through their international activities (particularly influencing developing countries). In this rapidly evolving regulatory environment, the more 'models' available to this international pool of resource materials that demonstrate practical. cost-effective and (most desirably) incentive based regulatory mechanisms, the better will be the eventual body of 'international standards' we will al have to work with. Australia can make a significant contribution to this process, however, it has only been on the margin of this dynamic, North American and European led process, up to this time. It is in the Australian minerals and energy industry's best interest to take an active part in the evolution and direction of this process.

The inter-relationship between these parties and the effect on the outcome of the project is often grossly underestimated. There are numerous success stories where the parties have worked as complementary teams aiming at the best outcome for the client company and achieving significant success. While there are a good number of occurrences where either the roles of the parties were unclear or perceived to be different from what others in the team believed or required them to be and the results were less than desired. This usually resulted in ongoing conflict, incorrect focus, working to different agendas and the result being a less than optimum result to Client Company. Mining, by its very nature of exploring where you cannot see, be it a shaft being sunk, tunnel being developed or other excavation that needs to be made, requires a very special working relationship between the parties. To understand this, and it applies equally well to mine and plant construction and other multiple function projects, one needs to start by describing the relationship of the parties. Often people believe that because they manage ongoing complex operations and large numbers of people that they can manage projects and as such the participants will ?fall into line.? At the outset it needs to be stressed that ?Project Management? is a specific type of management and needs to be understood as such. There are enough Colleges and Universities that teach project management, not only as a subject but also as a Master Degree. As you start up your project the relationship you establish between the client, project team (C.P.T) and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management team (EPCM) will largely determine how successful your project will be. It is essential that from the outset a spirit of co-operation, support and respect be nurtured, and that it be actively carried through the project life cycle. There are several methods to facilitate this including team building exercises right at the start. This time and money will be well spent and recouped many times over during the project life cycle.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

Dowding, Reynard and Associates Mineral Projects (DRAMP) was approached by the ARM/Lion Ore JV during July 2006 to conduct a feasibility study and control budget estimate for a new greenfield project for their NKOMATI Nickel mine 45 km east of Machadadorp. The scope included the evaluation and review of previous studies as well as a techno-economic trade-off on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous milling. The following document encapsulates the thought process, decisions and the references used in selecting the final comminution route for the new 375 ktpm MMZ concentrator. Apart from the pilot test work performed, design simulations from a number of sources, performance results from a recently commissioned 100 ktpm MMZ concentrator, together with an understanding of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody and possible variations in the characteristics of the orebody over the life of mine were assessed. The results from all the above-mentioned work indicated that it would be possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding (ABC-type) circuit. Autogenous milling is generally considered to be one of the higher risk milling circuits. This is mainly due to the fact that the ore, which is utilized as the grinding media, could be variable in terms of hardness and mineralogy/geology. Nevertheless, it is a very popular route as the cost benefits, more specifically the operating cost, are normally very attractive. This is especially the case when large low grade orebodies are evaluated. In North/South America, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits have been successfully employed during the past 20 years on large scale low grade operations. Taking all the above factors into account, the DRA/Nkomati project team recommended an autogenous circuit with the option to add steel to both the primary and secondary mills (if required) for the new operation in order to create the opportunity for significant operating cost savings. One has to bear in mind that all the new design simulations and decisions are based on previous work and potential unknown variations within the orebody will never be fully understood until the pit is operational for some time.

Abstract : The computation of reliability index or failure probability of slopes can be transformed into an optimisation problem. In high rock slope engineering, it is usually a multimodal optimization problem. The traditional optimization techniques are difficulty to find out the global optimal solution because of their easily falling into local optimal value. Recently, a new kind of bionic algorithm - ant colony algorithm (ACA) - has been used to solve this problem. In this paper, the structure of ant colony algorithm and the transfer probability of ants are modified to evaluate the failure probability of complicated slopes. A new adaptive ant colony algorithm (AACA) is proposed to determine critical slip surface and its corresponding failure probability of complicated slopes. A case study is given to verify the proposed approach. The results show that the presented method has obvious advantages compared with traditional methods. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Rechnung des Zuverlaessigkeitindexes oder der Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit kann sich in einer Optimierungsfrage umwandeln, im Bauprojekt an hoehe Gebirgehang, handelt es sich meistens um eine Optimierungsfrage ueber Multi- Spitzenwert. Mit der traditionelle Optimierungsmethode ist es schwer eine umfassende Loesung fuer die Optimierung zu finden wegen des leichte Verfallens in Beschraenkung der Teiloptimierungsloesung. Mit dem neue Bionik- Algorithmus —— Ameisen - Kolonie- Algorithmus wird dieses Problem geloest. In diesem Text hat man eine Strukturverbesserungsloesung fuer das Ameisen- Kolonie -system und die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ameisenkolonie erwaehnt, und damit wird man die Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit des komplizierte Hangs feststellen. Mit dem neuen Ameisen- Kolonie- Algorithmus kann man die gefaehrlichste Gleitflaeche und die entsprechende Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit herausfinden. Die in diesem Text beschriebene Methode wurde durch Praxis geprueft. Durch die Pruefergebnisse wurde es gezeigt und bestaetigt, dass der neue Bionik- Algorithmus vorteilhafter als der traditionelle Algorithmus ist. Résumé : Le calcul de l’indice la fiabilité ou de la probabilité de ruptures peut être transformé en un problème de l’optimisation. Pour le cas du génie des pentes de haut rocher , le problème se pose en général en l’optimisation de multi-crêtes. Les techniques traditionnelles conduisent facilement à la solution optimal partielle au lieu de celle globale. Récemment un nouveau type de bionique algorithmique a été appliqué pour la solution de ce genre de problèmes, c’est l’Algorithme Colonie de Fourmis. Dans l’article il est proposé de modifier la structure du système de la colonie de fourmis et la probabilité de transfert des fourmis en vue d’évaluer la probabilité de ruptures des pentes de haut rocher complexes, par ailleurs un nouveau algorithme adapté de colonie de fourmis est formulé pour déterminer la surface glissante critique et la probabilité de ruptures correspondante. Les techniques proposées dans l’article sont vérifiées à travers des expérimentations dont les résultats ont prouvé que les techniques présentées dans l’article sont évidemment meilleures que celles traditionnelles.

Refinement of design parameters and features has resulted in the development and commercialization of spiral separator models that offer enhanced performance for a number of application areas. Examples of recently developed spiral separator models include the enhanced performance (EP)spiral and the HC (high capacity) series. Comparative performance data for appropriate applications are presented for each of these new model spiral separators. The utilization of spiral separators providing improved performance offers significant cost and operational benefits for process plants. Examples of process flowsheet changes that have resulted from the incorporation of recently developed spiral separators include the reduction of the number of process stages and the achievement of high density tailings by the utilization of a dewatering arrangement in the spiral tailings splitter system.

A novel triple action load cell assembly (LCA) was developed to determine three index parameters reflecting compressive, tensile and shear characteristics of mudcakes. The results indicate that the tensile, compressive and torsional behaviour of mudcakes are strongly influenced by the physics and chemistry of the mud additives. Eine neuartige dreifach wirkende Druckkammer zur Bestimmung der drei Indexparameter Druck, Zug, und Scherung von Spülungskuchen wurde entwickelt. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf einen starken Einfluss der physikalischen und chemischen Spülungszusätze auf Druck, Zug, Scherung hin. Un assemblage d'une nouvelle cellule a triple action (LCA) a été développée pour déterminer trois paramètres caractérisant la compression, la contrainte en traction et la résistance á la fracture des cakes. Les résultats indiquent que les comportements tensile, compressif et de torsion des argiles sont fortement influencés par la chimie et la physique des additifs des boues.

The assessment of landslide instability and risk has become a topic of major interest for both geoscientists and engineering professionals as well as for local communities and administrations in many parts of the world. In this paper, based on a new developed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) grid-based 3D deterministic model and taken the slope unit as the study object, the landslide hazard is mapped by the index of the 3D safety factor. Assuming the initial slip as the lower part of an ellipsoid, the 3D critical slip surface in the 3D slope stability analysis is obtained by means of a minimization of the 3D safety factor using the Monte Carlo random simulation. The failure probability of the landslide is calculated by an approximate method in which the distributions of f,c and the 3D safety factor are assumed to be in normal distributions. The assessment of the earthquake triggered landslide hazard is done by the dynamic displacement analysis using the index of the Newmark displacement. All the calculations are implemented by a computational system call 3DSLOPEGIS in that a GIS component is used for fulfilling the GIS spatial analysis function. Besides the results of 3D safety factor and probability, the possible landslide body and boundary can be three-dimensionally quantitatively identified. L’ estimation des glissement de terrain et des risques impliqués est devenu un des principal sujet de préoccupation pour les géotechniciens, mais aussi pour les ingénieurs specialisés ainsi que pour les communautés et administrations locales dans de nombreuses région du monde. Dans cette étude, basé sur un modèle de maillage 3D et une approche déterniniste couplée au Système d'Information Géographique (SIG), étudiant la stabilité des versants , le lieu d'étude à risque est maillé suivant le facteur de sécurité calculé en 3D. En supposant que le glissement initial soit la partie inférieure d'un élipsoïde, l'analyse de stabilité pour le glissement critique 3D d'un versant 3D est obtenu grace à une minimisation du facteur de sécurité en 3D utilisant la méthode de simulation aléatoire de Monte Carlo. La probabilité d'un glissement de terrain est calculée par une méthode approximative, supposant la distribution de c, f et du facteur de sécurité 3D normale. L'estimation d'un risque de glissement de terrain causé par un tremblement de terre est faite grace à une analyse du déplacement dynamique suivant l'index de Newmark. Tous les calculs sont effectués par le biais d'un système de calcul appellé 3DSLOPEGIS dans lequel te GIS est utilisé pour gérer l'analyse spatiale. En plus de cela, les résultats du coefficient de sécurité en 3D, des probabilités, le terrain susceptible de glisser, et ses limites, peuvent être quantitativement évalués en trois dimensions. Die Bewertung von Erdrutsch-Instabilität und risiko sind zu einem Thema von großen Interesse für sowohl Geowissenschaftlern und Ingenieuren als auch von Gemeinden und Verwaltungen in vielen Teilen der Welt geworden. In dieser Arbeit, basierend auf einem neu entwickelten Geografische Informationssysteme (GIS) gitterbasierten 3D deterministischen Modell und mit der Böschung als Untersuchungsobjekt wird die Erdrutschgefahr durch den Index des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors kartografiert. Unter der Annahme, dass der erste Rutsch der untere Teil eines Ellipsoiden ist, wird die 3D kritische Schlupfoberfläche in der 3D-Böschungsstabilitätsanalyse mit einer Minimierung des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors mit der Monte Carlo Zufallssimulation erhalten. Die Fehlerwahrscheinlichkeit des Erdrutschs wird mit einer Annäherungsmethode berechnet, bei der die Verteilungen von f,c und dem 3D-Sicherheitsfaktor als innerhalb normaler Verteilungen angenommen werden. Die Beurteilung der Erdbeben-ausgelösten Erdrutschgefahr wird mit der dynamischen Verdrängungsanalyse mit dem Index der Newmark-Verdrängung gearbeitet. Alle Berechnungen werden mit einem Berechnungssystem mit der Bezeichnung 3DSLOPEGIS ausgeführt, bei dem eine GIS-Komponente zum Erfüllen der GIS räumlichen Analysefunktion verwendet wird. Neben der Ergebnissen des 3D-Sicherheitsfaktors und der Wahrscheinlichkeit kann der mögliche Erdrutschkörper und der Umfang dreidimensional quantitativ identifiziert werden.

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.
