This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

Historically, mine ventilation practices as it was referred to then and which was enforced by legislation of those days, focused primarily on the conditions in the working place and little attention given to actual exposures of workers to contaminants in the working environments. With the advent of the Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the South African Mining industry in 1994, findings in the report indicated that more attention should be given to occupational health of workers. The upshot of this report resulted in the promulgation of the new Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with certain sections of it devoted to all the aspects of occupational medicine and occupational hygiene. This paper describes the present situation with regards to statistics on occupational hygiene performance and compensation paid out to persons who have contracted occupational diseases, as well as the way forward in terms of legislation implemented in September 2002 on the chronic and acute issues affecting the mining industry in SA.

Abstract: A series of numerical tests of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks were performed to investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude and gradient on initiation and propagation of tensile fractures. The numerical tests were run with a Rock Failure Process Analysis code, F-RFPA2D, incorporated with a Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model (FSD). To investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude on fracture behaviour, “pinch-off” breaking tests, originally employed by Bridgeman to investigate the effective stress law for tensile fracture in a uniform pore pressure field, were numerically modelled. In another numerical test, a double-notched sample, with fluid pressure in one notch while keeping the other one open to the atmosphere, is numerically extended to investigate how the fluid flow direction or the pore pressure gradient will influence the fracture behaviour. The simulation results show that fracture is strongly influenced by both pore pressure magnitude and pore pressure gradient. Diese Pruefungen wurden mittels der Analyse- Software F-RFPA2D und Flow-stress-Damage Coupling model ( FSD) durchgefuehrt. Um den Einfluess der Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung auf den Bruch zu beurteilen, wurden auch Bruchpruefung und nummerische Analogexperimenten gemacht, und dadurch wurde die ganze Phase der Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten wiedergezeigt, und die Ergebnissen ergeben sich, dass die Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung und der Porisitaet sehr viel auf den Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten der Tension von Gebirgen beeinfluessen. Anomalous mining conditions can be described where the level of hazard is increased relative to normal conditions within a mining area. Normal conditions would be those defined as a Ground Control District in a mine’s code of practice, and for which mine standard support layouts are generally developed. It has been found that up to 80% of fall of ground accidents occur where anomalous mining conditions exists, typically in the vicinity of geological weaknesses. These areas require specific attention to ensure they are readily anticipated and identified and that appropriate strategies are used to reduce the hazards associated with them. As part of SIMRAC project GAP 607 checklists to aid identification and best practice mining methods were identified for a range of geotechnically anomalous conditions.

Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.

The paper circumscribes the base metal casting industry in Southern Africa. It essentially consists in the founding of copper and zinc alloys. The challenge related to the scarcity and the unaffordable quality patterns and dies faced by the industry is discussed. New manufacturing technologies for foundry tooling called Rapid Prototyping that can possibly be used to alleviate the above mentioned challenge are then presented and their benefits assessed.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. Trauma and occupational diseases economic risk distribution analysis has been presented in respect to the different subdivisions and occupational groups of “Vorgashorskaya” mine.

Abstract The in-situ stress field is one of the primary parameters influencing the performance of underground structures particularly in the Himalayas where there is strong influence of topography and geology on in-situ stresses. It is always advisable to measure the in-situ stresses, in whatever best way possible. Hydrofracturing is one of the methods by which in-situ stress can be measured. This paper briefly describes details of the concept of Hydrofracturing in arriving at the in-situ stresses of the rock mass at Pancheswar Project. The data obtained from the tests has been analysed, interpreted and the results are presented in this paper. Kurzfassung Das Spannungsfeld an Ort und Stelle ist einer der wichtigsten Parameter, die das Verhalten der Untergrund-Struktur beeinflussen, insbesondere in den Himalayas, wo die Topografie und die Geologie einen grossen Einfluss auf die oertlichen Spannungen ausueben. Es empfiehlt sich stets die Spannungen an Ort und Stelle so gut wie moeglich zu erfassen. Die Hydrofraktur bzw hydrografisches Zerstueckeln ist eine der Methoden, die bei den Messungen der oertlichen Spannungen verwendet werden koennen. Diese Abhandlung beschreibt kurz Einzelheiten ueber das Konzept von Hydrofraktur bei der Bestimmung der Spannungen an Ort und Stelle von der Felsmasse bezueglich des Projekts Pancheshwar. Die gewonnenen Daten aus den Messungen wurden analysieret und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse werden dabei vorgelegt. Sommaire Le champ de contraintes in-situ est un des paramèters principaux influencant l’exécution des structures souterraines particulierèment en Himalaya où les forces in-situ sont fortement influencées par les caractéristiques topographiques et géologiques de la région. La fracturation hydraulique est une technique qui permet de mesurer des forces in-situ des massifs rocheux. Cet article décrit brièvement le mécanisme de fracturation hydraulique et présente les résultats de mesure des forces in-situ des roches au site du projet hydroélectrique de Pancheswar.

The Quaternary Age aeolian dune sands of the Sibaya Formation on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast are well known for their heavy mineral content. Although ilmenite, rutile and zircon are the economically important members of the heavy mineral suite, many other nonsilicate minerals such as monazite, xenotime, chromite, magnetite, and spinel that are normally considered to be eitherun common or even rare are also present and these sands provide a unique opportunity to study such complex minerals. Monazite is the general term used for a complex series of rare earth phosphates dominated by lanthanum, cerium and neodymium with monazite-Ce, monazite-La and monazite-Nd recognized as distinct end members of the solid solution series. In addition to the elements indicated by the simplified formulae (LaCeNd) PO4monazite can also accept significant quantities of other elements from the lanthanide and actinide series (Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy,Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Th, Pa, U, Np). The monazite grains in the Sibaya Formation occur as both composite grains, composed of two or more distinct mineral phases, and homogeneous grains. The net physical properties of the composite grains, and their response to magnetic and electrostatic separation methods are related to size and composition of non-monazite component. However, the homogeneous monazite grains also display significant variation in their physical properties related to their chemical composition.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. The need to recruit locally produced engineers by the South African Mining Industry led to the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand developing a number of academic bridging initiatives for educationally disadvantaged students. The graduation rate achieved during the initial five years of operation by the most successful of these programmes has been on a par with that of al other students but the performance of subsequent intakes has declined to such an extent that the continuance of this scheme could now be at risk. One reason for this reduction in throughput is that many of the applicants for the increasing number of mining bursaries have been more interested in the bursary than the profession and have either failed or dropped out due to a lack of application and motivation. This will have serious consequences for both Wits and the Industry if it continues and some method of identifying unsuitable or suspect applicants needs to be introduced as a mater of urgency. It is recommended that an introductory course be set up at a working mine that would be run under the auspices of Wits, as a joint venture with industry, and include a level of academic input that would provide both bridging needs and certain first year credits. The final form of this course will require extensive consultation with al parties but needs to be completed before the end of 1996. It is further recommended that the advertising and promotion of mining careers be expanded and much improved.

Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom up function utilising available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on Probability of Failure and Factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimise the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

The inclination of any pit wall composed of stacks of benches is limited by the overall quality and structural complexity of the rock mass in which the slope is situated. For a bench stack angle that satisfies the stability criteria, various combinations of bench height, bench face angle and berm width can be used in the slope design. The bench face angle and berm width geometries must be chosen to fit the bench stack angle but must provide a berm that will be capable of catching the volume of failed wedge material from the bench faces above. Other considerations for bench height and berm width are equipment size, ore selectivity and blasting design. This paper studies the effects of different slope configurations on slope performance as it relates to wedge stability, volume of rock safely contained on berms, and rockfall. Optimisation of the geometry is carried out based on the need to minimise the volume of failed material which limits the effectiveness of the berm. This will reduce the number of rocks that can continue to fall further, reaching geotechnical safety berms or pit ramps, that put safety of personnel and equipment at risk. For general study it is most effective to investigate and compare the performances of each of a wide range of geometrical combinations of bench height, bench face angles and berm widths that fit a variety of different bench stack angles. These analyses were conducted for a predetermined bench stack height and three different bench stack angles.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. Keywords: Magnesium, pyrometallurgy, Mintek Samples of crude magnesium produced by the Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process were refined in two stages. The first stage consisted of co-melting of batches of the crude metal and MgCl2-KCl flux (cleaning), followed by stirring at 30 rpm for 30 minutes and settling of the sludge (mixture of molten salt and solid impurities) from the magnesium melt. The operating temperature was 680?730°C. Most of the contained calcium and significant proportions of iron and silicon were transferred into the sludge phase, which left a metal containing, on average, 950 ppm Si, 470 ppm Fe, and 230 ppm Ca. In the second stage, small-scale refining tests were conducted on cleaned samples from the first stage, as well as on crude magnesium. FeCl3 was used as the refining agent. These tests were carried out at 715?760°C with various amounts of the refining agent. The refined metal was suitable for the production of various magnesium alloys, particularly AZ91D.
