"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). This report (Safety File Guidance 6.0) is the eighth in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a study of a roof bolter to reduce noise exposure to mine roof-bolter operators. An important segment of this research entails determining the affect of various drilling configurations on the performance (penetration rate) and sound power emissions when drilling into granite. Test conditions included using various combinations of rotational speeds and thrusts, using 2.54- and 3.49-mm- (1- and 1 3/8-in.-) diameter hexagonal and round drill steels, using vacuum and wet conditions and using drill media of differing compressive strengths. This paper details the affects of each of these variables on the performance and sound power level emission. When drilling into granite, it was found that wet drilling generated lower sound power levels and performed better than vacuum drilling.

This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.

This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

Improve the Bureau-developed system for locating and communicating with miners trapped underground following a mine disaster. Approach Include in the wireless system a portable second-generation transceiver that is more reliable, compact, easier to deploy and operate, and ruggedized to withstand a mine environment. How It Works In an emergency, the new transceiver is snapped onto a caplamp battery for power. (Normally the 1 1/2-pound transceiver is either carried by the miner or is strategically located in the mine.) Its antenna wire, coiled inside the transceiver container, is removed and deployed in a roughly square configuration around a coal pillar or on the mine floor. The transverse force developed by expansion-shell rock-bolt anchors on the wall of a drill hole as the bolt is tensioned was measured by the Bureau of Mines using a device specially designed and fabricated for attachment to a universal testing machine. Load cells equipped with electrical-resistance strain gages provided the data from which the transverse force, in pounds, was calculated. Seven different expansion-shell anchors were tested, and the ratio of transverse force to bolt-tension load was found to range between 0.98 and 1.94 to 1.0. The drag load appeared to be the major cause of the transverse-force variation, but the relative effects of individual factors that affected the ratio between the transverse force and the bolt tension were not determined.

No producing or developing mines nor known mineral resources are in the Lower Saline Valley Wilderness Study Area. The inactive Bonanza Prospect has low potential for copper-gold-silver resources. Stone and sand and gravel deposits in the WSA do not constitute mineral resources because transportation costs to major markets are prohibitive. INTRODUCTION The Lower Saline Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA) covers 2,241 acres in southeast California adjacent to and west of Death Valley National Monument (fig. 1). Access to the WSA is by the Saline Valley gravel road 28 mi northerly from its junction with State Highway 190. The junction is about 35 mi southeast of Lone Pine, CA. The WSA is characterized by moderate to steep, sparsely-vegetated slopes; elevation ranges from about 1,800 ft to 3,560 ft.

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media are investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite-element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1,500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through in situ rubbling. Injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

Federal Regulations require MESA to regulate the exposure of workers to inhalation hazards in the surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. (1) The purposes of this study are listed below: 1. Determination of candidate inhalation contaminants for surface work areas of coal mining and processing operations. 2. Selection of appropriate sampling and analytical methods. 3. Performance of qualitative surveys of 56 representative coal mining and processing facilities. 4. Preparation of handbook to provide guidance for inspectors sampling for these contaminants. This report describes the work which was done to accumulate the information which was used in preparing the inspector&apos;s handbook. Specifically, this report contains descriptions of the surveys which were performed, analytical results obtained from these surveys, findings and conclusions, and recommendations for additional research.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

This circular is part 3 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problem; involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. Fart 2 discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors. This circular discusses the use of the hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredge. Part 4 to follow will discus the use of haulage equipment, and subsequent parts will discuss the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits. HYDRAULIC DREDGE Judged by the number of installations and the tonnage produced, as recorded in part 1 of this circular, the hydraulic or pump dredge is the most popular type of underwater sand and gravel excavator.

This Bureau of Mines report presents two phases of a research program to evaluate a single-entry system for longwall development. Organizations participating in the program; which began in July 1971, include the Bureau of Mines, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, and the University of Utah, working under a cooperative agreement with Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine in Utah. Part 1 of this report describes the present longwall mining practice, including a brief history, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a single-entry development system and its introduction in the United States. Part 2 of the report presents the research program; test design, instrumentation for ground and support evaluation, and the test results from the No. 2 mine. Subsequent reports will describe the research conducted in the No. 1 mine.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine if shapes of oxide-glass compositions could be roll-formed at high temperatures, and to find the conditions required for adequate formability. A unit with directly connect&apos; furnaces and heated rolls that allowed forming of most of the compositions developed. Glasses of the feldspar type were chemically unreactive with the alumina grains, and allowed the best roll forming. Optimum forming was attained at temperatures of 1,400° to 1,530° C, with compositions containing 30 or 40 percent feldspar and 60 or 70 percent alumina. Formability was better when compositions contained minus 325-mesh materials, rather than coarser or finer powders. In many cases, roll-formed shapes had physical properties equal to or better than the normally sintered shapes of the same composition.

A comparison of certain properties of the commercial aviation gasolines produced in the United States during October 1949, 1950, and 1951 is presented in table 1, the 1951 data being average values from tables 3 through 6 of the present report. Trends in the average values of certain characteristics of these fuels may be seen in figures 1 through 4 which also indicate the minimum and maximum values. As may be observed, with the exception of changes in kinematic viscosities, the properties of commercial aviation gasolines have not varied greatly during recent years. A list of aviation-gasoline survey reports published by the Bureau of Mines is given on page 6. A summary of the average values of the properties on jet fuels is shown in table 2.

In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

A small, special-purpose centrifugal compressor was developed to circulate 60 pounds per hour of helium at 1,000° F and 250 psig because standard, commercial units were not available. Performance characteristics of this compressor were determined at helium flows of 2,000 to 18,000 std cu ft per hour, pressures of 100 to 250 psig, and temperatures of 100° to 1,000° F. This range is 2 to 90 actual cu ft per minute. Several graphs show the adiabatic head developed by the compressor over this wide flow range at various combinations of temperature and pressure. A compressor performance map relates pressure ratio to mass flow, temperature, pressure, and speed. This map can be used to accurately predict compressor performance factors within the range of operating conditions covered by the experiments.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses wire ropes used for hoisting in U.S. mines. The in-formation presented was extracted from a large body of data compiled by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) using a data base management system (DMS). Further, these extracted data were then manipulated to provide tables of data that show the types and amount of wire rope used for hoisting. This report describes the different types of wire ropes and how a DMS can be used to manipulate MSHA&apos;s wire rope inventory data. The data indicate that more 1-1/4-in-diam ropes, 6x27 construction ropes, and right lang lay ropes are used in U.S. mines than ropes of any other diameter, construction, or lay type.
