The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 mls (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

In response to the underground mining industry&apos;s growing concern with the exposure of workers to the diesel particulate matter (DPM) component of diesel exhaust, a method was developed to estimate the average workplace concentration of DPM that could be expected from using the new lower DPMemitting engines now being approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) when these new engines are equipped with state-of-the-art exhaust-control, technology for filtering and combusting DPM. The resulting estimate uses the MSHA-reported particulate index for these engines, the prevailing rule-of-thumb ventilation rate of 150 cfm/hp and the available diesel-exhaust filter technology that has been shown to be at least 80% effective in reducing tailpipe DPM. In the estimate calculation, every engine used in an underground mine is assumed to be equipped with this control technology. Under the stated reasonable conditions, an average DPM level of 90 µg/m3 (mass) is predicted as technically feasible.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. "Preliminary examination of the Glass Buttes mercury deposits, Lake County, Oregon, was made in August 1945 at the request of W. S. Lazier, present lessee of the deposit.Most of the prospect openings in the area were inspected. The more significant workings were sampled and napped in detail. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation to date.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. noon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. P. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due to S. H. Lorain, chief, Albany Division, Mining Branch and to S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City, Utah, Metallurgical Division, for analyses of the ores.The presence of quicksilver in the Glass Buttes district has been known since about 1930. The area immediately north of Middle Butte has been superficially prospected by numerous test pits, trenches, shafts, and short adits, which revealed a number of opalized zones. Many of these opalized zones contain weak to strong concentrations of cinnabar. The area has not boon explored thoroughly; no mercury has been produced from any of its deposits.A block of 48 full-size claims has been located to cover a large part of the area in sections 34 and 3, Tps. 23 and 24 S.,R. 23 E.,W.M. These claims, held by, location are owned by H. S. Miller, lumberman of Bend, Ore. W. S. Lazier, 10N. W. 20th Avenue, Portland, Ore., currently controls the property under,a nominal leasing agreement. J. W. McDaniel, 44 Lake Place, Bend, Ore., has done much of the underground and surface exploration on the property.The Glass Buttes district is an area of low relief in the Deschutes River drainage system near the northeast corner of Lake County, Ore. (See fig. 1.) The arid climate is marked by extremes of winter and summer temperature. Water for cane use is not available in the immediate area. Well water, however, can be obtained in limited supply on ranch property 5 miles to the south."

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr,5 Fieldner and Davis,6 and others, 7 has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M.8 standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting she results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses.

In 1951 the Federal Bureau of Mines became interested in the reports of copper-nickel mineralization in northern Minnesota. Several outcrops on the north side of the Duluth gabbro in the Kawishiwi River area were sampled by the Federal Bureau of Mines and George M. Schwartz of the Minnesota Geological Survey. Because these samples showed appreciable amounts of copper and nickel, a 100-pound sample of an un-altered outcrop was obtained for metallurgical testing. Results from this preliminary work were all favorable; therefore, in the fall of 1953 the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled three holes near the outcrop of the con-tact between the Duluth gabbro and the Algoma granite. A total of 686 feet of NX size hole was drilled, and 100 percent of the core was recovered. Each hole intersected the contact, and the strike and dip for that locality were established. The core was split, and half was used for analyses and further metallurgical tests; the remainder was retained for permanent record in the Bureau of Mines core-storage warehouse.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University&apos;s San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

To finalize the three years granted for the study of miners physiological responses to emergency situations, all the data obtained, were summarized into the following relevant sections; A.. Information on elements of the Man Test required under Subpart 4, Part 2, Title 30 in the Code of Federal Regulation (see Table M-T and Ref. I., Section A). B. Investigation on possible emergency activities, its simulation in the laboratory and the physiologic data obtained on miners performing them This included some studies under cool ambient conditions, expected to prevail in coal mines. C. While in section B the steady state responses have been obtained, time was devoted to establish a unit that will allow data gathering for non-steady state, i.e., transient responses to rapidly changing activities. Section B and C contained elements that were relevant to section A; the Man Test. Therefore some of the information described under section A Man Test, were actually measured during the battery of tests in either section B or in section C.

Much information on oxygen production and the manufacture of synthetic liquid fuels has been published during the past several years. From time to tine the investment and operating cost of oxygen plants of various sizes has been estimated. Surveys have been made so that the various processes by which oxygen is produced commercially might be compared. The gas-making processes in which oxygen is employed, which wore used in Germany during the war, have been described in T.O.M. reels, and this information has been published. Descriptions of pilot-scale or proposed commercial plants for the production of synthesis gas or hydrogen and their conversion to synthetic liquid fuels also have been published. In general, each of these publications has dealt with a particular phase of the over-all problem. The present paper will discuss the relationship between these phases: The factors that affect oxygen manufacture and costs, the methods for the use of oxygen and for the production of synthetic liquid fuels, and, to some extent, the economic factors that must be considered.

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to develop a more continuous titanium metal extraction process that uses domestic resources, a study was made to determine the extraction of titanium (Ti) and iron (Fe) from New York rock ilmenite using fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6). The effects of leach temperature, acid concentration, and particle size were investigated for the rate at which Ti and Fe are extracted from the ilmenite. Within the leach time studied, the extraction data fit a shrinking-core model; the rate-controlling step was diffusion of H2SiF6 through an ash layer resulting from a heterogeneous leaching reaction. The rate is linearly dependent on the H2SiF6 concentration and is inversely proportional to the square of the particle diameter. Using 2.6M H2SiF6 at 85°C, 49% of the Ti and 53% of the Fe in 44-to 74-µm New York rock ilmenite were extracted in 3 h.

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines has taken up the problem of determining a method or methods whereby underground compensation insurance rates for metal-mining companies can be equalized in proportion to the underground hazards involved. This study has been started by the writer with the assistance of Mr. I. M. Wolfin* as consultant.The present paper briefly reviews the origin of accident compensation, gives a digest of State compensation laws, and describes types of insurance carriers. This will be followed by study of the basis of premium rate, risk differentials, and cost of compensation insurance to mine operators. These data will be supplemented by an analysis of the accident hazards in different mining methods and practices, and the severity and frequency of accidents classified by time lost and period of exposure to hazard, for different States, mining methods, occupations and nationalities. Attention will be given to standardized preventives for underground accidents in metal mines, and, finally, the classification of underground metal-mining hazard for workmen's compensation insurance premium rating."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. The Bureau of Mines has engaged m a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Land availability, based on ownership and Federal and State laws and policies, is compared with mineral terranes and mineral deposits. This is the fifth of six regional studies, which cover the State with a comprehensive set of maps and data compilations. This study covers an area of 112.3 million acres in western Alaska. In July 1986, 41.0 million acres, 37% of the study area, were available for mineral exploration and development; 14.6 million acres, 13%, were available with restrictions; and 56.7 million acres, 50%, were unavailable. Nearly 65% of the unavailable land is classified as national parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, and wild and scenic rivers. Of the 34.0 million acres of mineral terranes that underlie the study area, 12.9 million acres, 38%, are available for exploration and development; 3.6 million acres, 11%, are available with restrictions; and 17.5 million acres, 51%, are unavailable.

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. This is explained by Fox and Turrentine 5/, who state:"

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .
