After emphasizing the importance of quantitative rock mass classifications in mining, originally directed to selection of rock support measures, but subsequently to estimates of rock mass properties such as rock mass strength and rock mass modulus of deformation, current attention calls for a classification specifically for rock mass excavability by tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are used extensively in tunneling as well as in the mining industry. This paper introduces the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index for predicting excavability of rock masses by TBMs using a quantification of machine performance and rock mass conditions. The RME index is based on five input parameters aimed at relating rock mass behavior and machine characteristics: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of the rock material, (2) drillability/abrasivity, (3) rock mass jointing at mine drift face, (4) standup time of the excavation, and (5) groundwater inflow. Development of the RME index entailed the collection of extensive data from more than 28 km of tunnels and some 400 case records from projects in Spain involving double-shield TBMs. In the process, a number of statistical correlations have been established between RME and such output parameters as degree of machine utilization, advance and penetration rates, thrust and torque of the cutterhead, and the specific energy of excavation. It was found that the RME index provides a particularly significant correlation for predicting the average rate of advance (m/day). In essence, the RME index is a classification system that features interaction of rock mass conditions with boring machine characteristics for use in the early stages of a project. It should be noted that the RME index does not replace the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or Q-systems as used in mining and tunneling; indeed, one of the RME input parameters, standup time, is determined from the RMR. However, the approach presented introduces a specialized tool relevant to excavating tunnels and drifts. Possible applications to hard-rock mining are explored.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. [ ] AMSS Software Package NIOSH has developed a simple, user-friendly computer program called Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS). AMSS can help mine planners to evaluate each potential multiple-seam interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS begins by evaluating the pillar design. To improve mine health and safety conditions, there is need for a portable instrument that mine inspectors can use routinely for rapidly checking concentrations of dust in mine atmospheres. On October 23, 1969, Stanford Research Institute was authorized by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct a study aimed at developing such an instrument under Contract No. H0100186. The results of that study are reported in Technical Report No. 1, "Development of Portable Instrument For Measuring Coal Mine Dust Concentration," August 1970. In that study it was demonstrated on bench-scale that a near-forward optical scattering device gives a linear correlation between mass concentration and optical readout over a range of 2 to 200 mg/m3 with excellent reproducibility. The same correlation was obtained for the Respirable* dust fraction of three different coal dusts within ± 10% and an extreme spread of ± 30%. Based on these results a prototype instrument was designed which was expected to meet all the necessary requirements of a portable instrument for mine use. Because of the excellent results obtained, a further study was authorized by the Bureau of Mines on May 10, 1971 under Contract No. H0111688. The prime objective of this study was to build, calibrate, and deliver to the Bureau of Mines two prototype instruments based on the design previously developed. The emphasis was to be on providing instruments which would meet certain minimum standards of size, weight, response time, sensitivity, ruggedness, reproducibility, permissibility, and cost (ultimate); optimization of the design was to be considered only insofar as it would not significantly delay the development. One instrument was to be delivered after initial calibration of both instruments with Coal Dust PGH. The second instrument was to be used for further calibration with a number of other coal and rock dusts and for assessing other relevant performance characteristics. This report summarizes all the results of this second study.

Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff members.THE BLAST FURNACE AND PLANTThe general lay-out of the recently built (1917) Bunker Hill plant has been given in the technical press in articles that were cited in Report of Investigations 3088. In addition it may be noted that the description of an ideal smelter given by Riddell 5 a year later fits the Bunker Hill smelter very well, with some changes, such as the location of the stack, made necessary by topography. For purposes of this article on the blast furnace it may suffice to state that the plant is one of the ""side hill location"" type. The various successively lower benches may roughly be considered as made for (1) the stack, (2) Cottrells and bag houses, (3) Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines with the equipment or bins for handling or mixing the feed and storing the finished product, sinter, and (4) the blast furnace feed floor with a slightly rising gradient to the bottom of the bins for sinter, feed, and take. The lowest bench (5) might be considered that of the blast furnace tapping floor at which or at appropriately slightly lower elevations are located the units for softening, refining, and treating precious metals, and for casting and loading lead. A very careful study of grades was made in order to be able to handle the products easily. All units were left with at least one end open to permit expansion of the plant, it desired, and each unit was separated from the other, evidently so that the operators on one level would be annoyed as little as posssible with the products made on another."

"The Jewell tunnel property, situated 3/miles north of Garfield, Chaffee County, Colo., was examined by an engineer3 of the Bureau of Mines in June 1943. Field work began September 16, 1944, but was recessed from December 26, 1944, to gay 15, 1945, because of heavy snows, and was suspended July 12, 1945, when rehabilitation of the New York tunnel workings was completed to the point desired.In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lines has as its promary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as seen .as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Morphometric examination of lung alterations following exposure to toxic and pathogenic substances is invaluable in detecting subtle changes which might otherwise be overlooked. Results, from evaluation of initial structural alterations, support and guide subsequent nonmorphological techniques and, when coupled appropriately, can lead to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of a disease. Morphometry is a technique which can be used to determine, quantitatively, the site, extent, development, and progression of a disease state. Determination of the extent of tissue and cellular involvement in the response to inhalation of silica has been performed in order to gain a better understanding of the development of fibrosis following inhalation of this toxicant. In addition, since silica has been postulated as one of the important pathogenic minerals in coal mine dust' it is important to understand the lung tissue response to silica prior to evaluating the effects of inhaled coal mine dusts. Male Syrian golden hamsters were placed in Hazelton 1000 inhalation chambers and were exposed to either filtered air (controls, n = 24) or filtered air plus 30 mg!m3 silica (Min-U-Si110,95%ofparticles < 5 um,n =24)for16hours per day, five days per week, for two weeks. Animals were returned to the animal quarters prior to subsequent tissue processing at 1, 4, and 12 weeks following exposure. This schedule was designed to allow time for the development of fibrosis. Lungs were fixed by intratracheal perfusion of ½ strength Karnovsky's fixative at a pressure of 20 cm H20 and tissues were taken for embedment and analysis at the light level. Determination of site, extent, and development of alterations was performed using a multitiered approach. Changes in large structures (airways, blood vessels) was determined prior to evaluation of changes at the septal tissue level. Data will be presented outlining the progression of changes. Results indicate the usefulness of morphometric analysis of lungs following inhalation of toxic substances in quantitatively defining the structural alterations.

"The Bureau of Mines exploratory work on the Bear Lodge, Wyo., fluorite property wider the strategic minerals Program was completed in November 1944. Exploration consisted of surface trenching, shaft sinking, and drifting at shallow depth. Doak C. Cox of the Federal Geological Survey visited the area during the latter part of 1944 and napped the Bear Lodge property.The Bear Lodge property is situated in the Black Hilts National Forest in eastern Crook County, Wyo., 6 miles north of the community of Sundance (fig. 1). Sundance is 29 miles northwest of Upton, Wyo., a station on the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad and 43 miles southwest of a siding on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, 3 miles south of Belle Fourche, S. Dak. U. S. Highway 14 passes through Sundance in an east-west direction. Sundance may be reached from the south over U. S. Highway 85 and Wyoming State Highway 585.The Bear Lodge property i a situated in the Boer Lodge Mountains in secs. 15, 22, and 23, T. 52 N., R. 63W., 6th P.M.The topography in the vicinity of the fluorite deposits consists essentially of rounded hills which slope gently to the valley floors. Near the north end of the Property the terrain steepens locally, and the canyon walls are Precipitous along the courses of several streams. There is an adequate supply of water and native timber for mining purposes. The average elevation near the deposits is 5,700 feet.The climate of the region is relatively moderate. The summers are usually warm, with frequent rainstorms. Temperatures often fall below zero during the winter months. Snowfalls are moderate to heavy.Fluorite occurrences in the Bear Lodge area have been known since 1914; however, fluorite was not discovered on the Bear Lodge property until 1943, when prospectors working on a nearby manganese deposit found fluorite mineralization in the limestone. No production has been recorded from the property."

Patterns of species colonization, biochemical interaction among species, and competitive phenomena were studied in four reclaimed areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years after mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison. Early successional changes in floristic composition and soil chemistry were quantified. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized and seeded. Despite seeding of agronomic species, initial colonization was by fugitive species; analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kuchia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochlo had relatively low densities in the first year (50-80 plants m-2), but was robust and attained heights of 88 cm with a biomass of about 400 g m-2 In the second year, the plant densities increased to over 10,000 plants m"2 but the height and biomass were reduced to 15 cm and 90 g m-2. However, during the third and fourth years Kochia density declined and was practically non-existent by the fourth year, while the planted Agropyron grasses had concomitantly increased. Other pioneers like Amaran thus retroflexus, Chenopodlum album, Helianthus annuus, Salsola spp. And Setaria spp. showed a less abrupt but similar decline. Chemical analysis of the soils over the same time period showed decreases in electrical conductivity (E.C.), and in the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na, Li, Sr, and SO4 (due to leaching), while N increased. Field studies were conducted on the competitive relations between the dominant species - Kochia scoparia and Agropyron spp. - during early succession. It was found the Kochia acted as a "nurse" crop for several months during the first year of Agropyron spp. establishment, but then began to shade heavily by late July, thus reducing grass tillering. Field and growth chamber experiments on the intraspecific competition relations of Kochia demonstrated that its density and dry matter production, per plant and per unit area, conformed to several laws of plant population biology. Autotoxicity or the depression in growth of a species by its own degradation compounds, in Kochia, appears to be the main factor causing the decline in its growth. Results from a field experiment indicated that thinning dense second year Kochia stands to the density of first year stands did not alter the growth of Kochia, providing strong evidence for autotoxicity. Similarly, several growth chamber experiments demonstrated that small amounts of decaying Kochia leaves and especially roots were toxic to Kochia growth, but not Melilotus officinalis or Agropyron canlnum, Chemical analysis of the soils and plant tissues indicated nutritional im¬balances as shown by P/Mn and P/Zn ratios may be responsible for autotoxicity. In addition to Kochia, a bioassay experiment showed allelochemics to be important in several other colonizing species. Although our results indicate that later stage species generally have greater toxicities than first year colonizers, autotoxicity in the very initial stages seems to be accentuated by harsh habitat conditions. Several practices (mowing. fire, etc.) are used to manage grasslands. Mowing of the first year erect, annual, colonizing vegetation was shown to be beneficial in the growth and establishment of wheatgrasses after mining in western North Dakota. Plots containing Kochio predominantly were mowed in mid-and late-July, and in mid-August, during the first year of growth after recontouring, replacing topsoil. seeding and fertilizing. It was found the Kochia densities were reduced to two percent of the control and its biomass reduced to less than one-third when the area was mowed in mid-August. On the other hand, wheatgrasses showed increases of 23% in stem density and 860% in biomass production over the controls when mowed in mid-August. The mowing of Kochia just before seed-set apparently reduces interspecific competition between Kochia and Agropyron spp. during the following growing season. The method is highly recommended for use in hastening the establishment of planted grasses.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes a method of horizontal drilling in an oil-producing formation underlying a 400-acre, approximately square plot of land in the Franklin Heavy oil field in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County, Pa. The method, which was developed on two previous projects in Ohio, 3/ consists of sinking a shaft to the bottom of a shallow oil sand and drilling holes in a general horizontal plane outward from the chamber in a pattern similar to that of the spokes of a wheel. The project was undertaken by the Venango Development Corporation in an attempt to find an efficient method of recovering oil from partly depleted sand formations.The Venango Development Corporation is composed of the following oil-producing and oil-refining companies and individuals: South Penn Oil Co., Forest Oil Corporation, Kendall Refining Co., Minard Run Oil Co., Quaker State Oil Refining Co., The Pennzoil Co., Alliance Oil Corpo¬ration, United Refining Co., Franklin Creek Refining Corporation, Canfield Oil Co., Pennsylvania Refining Co., Page Oil Co., Freedom Oil Co., D. W. and D. S. Grant, and J. P. Herrick, C. M. Davison and N. V. V. Franchot. Engineering features of the project were supervised by a committee off three engineers A. J. Saxe, chairman, W. M. Shoemaker, and C. N. Pfohl, who supervised the excavation of the shaft and the drilling of the first two holes by alternately spending a week at a. time at the project. The drilling method was under patent license from Leo Ranney, who served as technical advisor to the Venango Development Corporation; in addition, he furnished the design for the shaft and work chamber."

"IntroductionA study of 256 coal-mine explosions, which occurred during the period 1909-1924 killed 4113 men and injured 570 others, reveals the fact that there are the critical times of day when explosions are most likely to occur, and when corresponding care should be exercised to guard against disaster. Of these 256 explosions, 83 straight as explosions, 89 were straight coal-dust explosions, and 81 were mixed gas and dust explosions, while three were undetermined.It has been determined from the times given in these reports (in several cases no times were given,that the critical period in the morning ranges between 6 and 9 o'clock when 83 explosions took place with a peal. at 7;30 o'clock. Of these 55 were straight gas explosions, the remainder being either coal dust or mixed gas and coal dust explosions. The critical period in the afternoon or early ranges between 3 and 7 o'clock, when 113 explosions took place, with a peak at 6 o'clock. Of these, 87 wore straight coal-dust explosions the remainder being neither gas or mixed gas and coal-dust explosions. Between these morning and evening periods is one which might be called the noon period - that is, from 11m to 7. p. m. - when 26 explosions occurred while some of these were normal type of explosions - that is, as to causes - others were of unusual cause and character, and. are discussed later. A number of explosions (29 in all) took place during mid-afternoon, late at night, and early in the morning - that is, after midnight."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former US Bureau of Mines (USBM) to engineer techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining workplace associated with coal bumps. Recent research focused on a longwall coal mine in Utah with overburden greater than 750 m (2,500 ft) containing several massive sandstone units. The primary field instrumentation at the site was three-dimensional, full waveform, autonomous microseismic arrays placed underground and on the surface in order to surround the active multi-panel longwall district. The purpose of these arrays was to help investigate the strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation of the longwall. Specifically, the seismic arrays were used to determine the timing and location of the failure in the strata surrounding the active mining. Overall 13,000 seismic events were detected and located with on-site processing during the five months the panel was being mined, including a magnitude (ML) 4.2 event. Of these, a smaller subset of 5,000 well-located events was selected during post-processing to form a consistent data set for analysis in this paper. From this data set, it was observed that the seismic events generally occurred in advance of the longwall face, both above and below the panel, consistent with failure of the strata in the forward stress abutment zone. Also, the occurrence of the ML 4.2 seismic event within 150-180 m (500-600 ft) of a deep cover longwall face with no associated bump caused a re-evaluation of the nature of the connection between seismic activity and coal bumps.

A series of four coal combustion experiments (I)&apos; was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the Safety Research Coal Mine to evaluate the response of optical and ionization smoke and CO sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. With the increased utilization of diesel engines in underground coal mines, it is important to be able to discriminate fire products-of-combustion (POC) from diesel emissions. One proposed method to accomplish this is the deployment and interpretation of multiple sensors.

Pilot Hole ?X? was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine will be drilled. Five permeability tests were performed at various stratigraphic levels within this hole. The test method used was that of pumping fluids out of the hole for three hours, using the air lift method, followed by a three-hour period where the recharge was observed. Transmissivity and permeability results were determined from these test data. The test procedure used is described and supporting data for the hydrologic tests are provided.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using "big hole" drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in derail.

The Windigo Theilson RARE II area has a low mineral potential. There are no mines or claims in the area. The only observed results of mining activities were five prospect pits near Tolo Mountain. Samples from these pits contained no significant assays. The study area contains more than 190 million cu yds (145 million m3) of cinders in 17 cones. Development of these cinders is unlikely because their locations are remote, and other sources supply area needs. The Geological Survey has classified the area as prospectively valuable for geothermal resources. However, there has been no geothermal exploration activity.

[This paper, which describes the milling practice at the San Guillermo concentrator of the Compania Industrial "M Potosi", S.A., located at Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator treats lead-zinc-silver ore at the rata of 2,300-2,400 tons of dry material daily and produces lead concentrate and zinc concentrate by selective flotation methods. The lead concentrate is smelted at the Chihuahua plant of the American Smelting & Refining Co., and the zinc concentrate is shipped to various European smelters.]

The Bureau of Mines designed and tested a hardware-software system for measuring on-line corrosion rates of materials in a rod mill in operation. Currents ranging from 10-6 to 10-3 A and potentials in I-mV increments were converted to a digital signal. The digitized data were frequency-modulated and transmitted from a rotating ball mill to an FM receiver, where they were decoded by computer and then processed in real time using assembly language software. This design approach would allow accurate measurement and control of systems where signals of small amplitude and large ranges are present.

An evaluation of diamond-bit performance data accumulated from core drilling in quartzite shows that core recovery and physical characteristics of drill bits and diamonds have economic significance. Relatively inexpensive, low-quality, small Congo diamonds will perform as well as, or better than, other diamonds used as drill bart. M-type bits set with oriented Congo diamonds provide those engaged in core drilling with near optimum combination. Various factors that affect bit performance, including size of diamonds, size and type of bits, grade or quality of diamonds, and percentage of core recovered, are evaluated by means of tables, charts, and discussion.
