"INTRODUCTION Coal is a compressed mass of heterogeneous, macerated, metamorphosed plant remains that have collected in the earth's crust. Probably no two beds of coal have identical properties, and different parts of the same bed may vary considerably when measured by some of the many empirical tests that have been developed to classify or differentiate the properties of coal. Because of this great variability in properties, the commercial processing of coal to produce coke and byproducts has developed largely as an art based on experience, rather than as a science. Much empirical chemical research, however, has been and is being conducted on coal carbonization, and this work is of practical value in obtaining larger yields of gas and byproducts and in the improvement of the physical properties of the coke.Both ultimate and proximate analyses have been used for correlating purposes. 3/ In the United States the proximate analysis is used for the classification of coal according to rank and grade. The proximate analysis can be employed usefully in the coal—carbonization industry because separation of the combustible matter of coal into volatile matter and fixed carbon is, in fact, a small carbonization test conducted on 1 gram of coal heated in a platinum crucible.Small—Scale Laboratory Coking Tests,Many empirical tests have been devised for determining the coking properties and measuring the yield and quality of gas and byproducts obtainable from various coals. These tests, made on samples ranging from 25 grams (about 1 ounce) to 5 kilograms (11 pounds), furnish information that is roughly proportional in practical value to the size of the sample carbonized. However, the cost of the carbonization test also increases with the amount of the sample, so that for preliminary surveys of a number of coals, samples of 25 to 1,000 grams usually are employed."

A refinement of the tungsten-cobalt phase diagram is presented for compositions to 85 at. pct cobalt and for temperatures to the solidus. Preparation of alloys by powder metallurgy methods is described, and the results of studies made by a combination of techniques involving microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and dilatometry are discussed. The existence of u-W6Co7 is confirmed (rhombohedral D85 structure). The W6Co7 phase forms periectically at 1,685'115° C by reaction of liquid with primary W; the peritectic melt is at 71 at. pct cobalt. The homogeneity range of u-W6Co7 extends to both sides of the ideal stoichiometric ratio, through a compositional range of about 5 at. pct. The compositional limits for u-W6Co7 vary slightly below 1,471°±5° C, the temperature of the eutectic reaction forming u-W6Co7 plus a. The eutectic composition is at 79 at, pct cobalt. The existence of WCo3 is confirmed (hexagonal D019 structure). WCo3 forms peritectoidally at 1,093°±5° C by reaction between a and u-W6Co7 and exists over a narrow homogeneity range of 0.5 to 0.6 at. pct. The solid solubility of cobalt in tungsten is low (maximum 0,9 at, pct cobalt) and results in contraction of the tungsten lattice. Tungsten is extensively soluble in a-Co at higher temperatures; the a-Co lattice is expanded by the presence of tungsten in solid solution. There was no indication of the formation of a o-phase nor of any intermediate phases other than WeCo7 and WCo3. The WeCo7 and WCo3 phases are compared with similar phases in other systems.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping methodology has been used to study the reactions of manganese dusts with glutathione, employing a-{4-pyridyl-1-oxide)·N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as spin traps. The results show evidence for the glutathionyl radical formation in the reactions of both MnO2 and manganese (Ill) acetate with glutathione. Based on these experimental observations, we hypothesise that the mechanism of neurotoxic effects of manganese might be due to the fact that the generation of glutathionyl radicals depletes the glutathione pool and reduces the glutathione shield against free radical products of dopamine metabolism and manganese induced reactive oxygenated species. IntroductionExposure to manganese compounds often occurs as the result of foundries and mining operations (1. 2). Other significant sources of environmental manganese include coal-fired power plants and burning of residual and crude oil (3, 4). Lately gasoline combustion has also started to contribute since manganese (methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 0. 125 g/gallon) is being used instead of lead as an antiknock ingredient in automobile fuels (5. 6). Although manganese is an essential element in certain biological processes it is toxic in excessive amounts. The manganese toxicity is mainly associated with the nervous system (7-9). Symptoms frequently observed in manganese poisoning or manganism are disorientation, memory loss, anxiety, compulsive laughing and crying, mask-like faces, akincsia rigidity and tremor (10). In spite of numerous investigations to understand the mechanism of manganese induced injury. it has not been possible to localize the initial chemical lesion responsible for altered physiology and ultimate cell death. This may perhaps he the reason for failure in developing a successful therapy for manganese intoxication."

The method for smelting zinc in horizontal retorts developed several centuries ago is still in use. This process consists essentially of the reduction of zinc oxide by carbon at 1,200° to 1,400° C. in a fire-clay retort. The reaction is highly endothermic, and a high radiation loss occurs in transferring the heat of reaction through the fire-clay walls. In recent years, silicon carbide retorts with much better heat-transfer characteristics than fire clay have been supplanting the old retorts. The practical impossibility of recovering the carbon monoxide formed in the reduction causes a large loss of fuel. Intermittent smelting is done in small retorts that are manually charged and discharged, and the furnace crews must be specially trained if efficient results are to be obtained. During the past 20 years several processes have been introduced that have substantially improved the horizontal-retort process. One of these, developed by the New Jersey Zinc Co., consists of a continuous process in which a briquetted mixture of zinc sinter, reducing agent, and binder is coked at 750° to 900° C. and charged into a vertical silicon carbide retort. A supply of displacement air or exhaust combustion gas is introduced at the base of the retort at an appropriate pressure in order to keep the zinc vapor from condensing on the cooled residue in the lower part of the retort. Any .oxidizing constituents in the displacement gas are converted to carbon monoxide by reaction with the carbon in the charge. The spent residue is continuously removed at the bottom of tl1e retort. The chief advantages of this process are said to be increased output per man-day, improved working conditions, high recovery of zinc, increased thermal efficiency, and long retort life.

The use of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel introduces numerous hazards not ordinarily associated with the use of other more conventional fuels. These hazards are attributable to the unique properties of hydrogen in the liquid and gas states (table 1). Since little work has been conducted on explosion and related hazards of cryogenic fuels, a research program was undertaken to obtain basic data on such dangers for hydrogen and other combustibles under these conditions. These data were used to outline emergency procedures for protecting personnel and equipment when an accidental spillage of liquid hydrogen occurs and to establish a quantity-distance table for the storage of this fuel. The vaporization of liquid hydrogen from a surface is treated as a prob¬lem in heat transfer theory. Two extreme cases are briefly considered: (1) The transfer of heat occurs at constant temperature drop between, the boiling liquid and the hot surface, and (2) the transfer of heat is limited by the rate at which it can flow to the surface from a hot insulating medium. The available data indicate that the former case (1) is applicable when vaporizing from a conducting surface and, initially, when vaporizing from an insulating medium; the latter case (2) is applicable after initial flash vaporization has occurred from the insulating medium. The vaporization rate determines in part the rate at which flammable hydrogen vapor-air mixtures are formed above a spill area. However, the rates at which heat is transferred to the vapor, and air is brought in contact with it also are of importance. Accordingly, the distribution of flammable mixtures above a spill area was determined experimentally. In general, flammable mixtures were found to be both above and within the visible vapor cloud.

"INTRODUCTION Respirable dust is defined as the dust which penetrates to the alveolated regions of the lungs. Due to the size selective nature of the particle removal mechanisms in the nasal passages and lung airways, criteria defining respirable particles must be a function of the particle size. Three criteria defining respirable particle penetration are shown in Figure 1. These criteria have been defined by the British Medical Research Council (BMRC), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and German TBF 50-11 (1).The quantity of respirable particles in an aerosol can be measured by use of two-stage samplers. The first stage consists of a particle preclassifier with penetration characteristics corresponding to one of the respirable penetration curves in Figure 1. The large nonrespirable dust particles are removed from the airstream in the preclassifier and the smaller respirable dust particles pass on to some device which can measure their concentration (the respirable dust concentration).Instrumentation for the measurement of respirable coal mine dust has been limited by the severe conditions existing within the coal mine. The conditions of particular importance are the methane atmosphere, high humidity, and the general non-laboratory type environment. The most severe of these conditions is the methane atmosphere since any electronic or electric powered instrumentation must be intrinsically safe to operate in such an atmosphere.In spite of the difficulty of sampling respirable dust within the mines, many instruments have been developed for in mine use. Although these instruments operate under a variety of principles they generally fall within two categories: personal samplers and area samplers.A personal sampler is worn by the mines while he is performing his duties in the mine. These devices are generally small, light weight and require little power so as not to interfere with the miner's ability to work."

"INTRODUCTION The brown-iron ores of the Western Highland Rim of Tennessee extend north and south across the State for 115 miles. Many prospects of iron ore are known in this area.The district is credited with an output of 8 million tons of washed ore prior to 1930. Records on past shipments of ore indicates that the grade was probably 45 to 50 percent iron, 0,7 to 1.25 percent phosphorus, and 10 to 21 percent insoluble.As part of a survey of the iron resources of the Appalachian area, the Bureau of Manes began exploration .of the Churchwell and Robinette properties April 16, 1945, and continued until July 25, 1945, during which time 122 feet of test pits were sunk and 667 feet of churn drilling was completedPROPERTY AND ACCESSThe Churchweil property and that part of the Robinette tract north of U. S. Highway 64 are reported to be owned by the heirs of William Millsaps.The Churchwell property is northeast of Waynesboro, the county seat of Wayne County (fig. 1), and is east of Forty-Eight Creek, between Duggar Branch on the north and Little Forty-Eight Creek on the south.The property is reached from Waynesboro by traveling U. S. Highway 64 east 8 miles to Forty-Eight Creek, thence north on a secondary road 2 miles, to where Little Forty-Eight Creek joins it, thence by an old logging road up the hill half a mile to the property.The Robinett tract lies 1 mile southeast of the Churchwell and is reached by traveling east from Waynesboro on U. S. Highway 64 and a distance of 6.7 miles, and then turning left on an old logging road and following the ridge 2 miles to the prospect."

"INTRODUCTION The mineral found in natural-chromite deposits is never pure Fe0.Cr203, but rather one in which the Fe0 and Cr203 are in part replaced by Mg0 and A1203, respectively. The purest gravity concentrates from many domestic de¬posits consist of a mineral referred to as ""picotite,"" in which this isomorphous replacement is such that the ratio of chromium to iron is low. The Bureau of Nines has investigated methods of chemically beneficiating ores that contain too much iron to be classed as ""high-grade"" chromite 3/ Early investigations 4/ demonstrated that high-iron chromite or picotite ores can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that most of this reduced iron can be removed by acid-leaching the roast products to produce residues of higher chromium-to-iron ratios. tests 5/ indicated that commercially acceptable reaction rates cannot be obtained at roasting temperatures below 1,3000 C., using solid carbon as reducing agent. By this high-temperature reduction and subse¬quent acid-leaching, however, all ores investigated, regardless of the original composition, readily yielded residues considerably better than the minimum specifications for high-grade chromite.In an effort to obtain satisfactory reduction of chromite at lower temperatures, liquid and gaseous seducing agents were tested with varying success. Of the several reducing agents used, methane appeared to be the most promising and was shown to be highly effective at temperatures between 1,000º and 1,100º C., roughly 300º below the roasting temperatures necessary in solid carbon reduction. Further experiments indicated that mixtures of methate with some diluent (hydrogen or other nonoxidizing gas) gave better reduction than did methane alone."

The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (1), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipe-line. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed,

This report presents the results of an investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado, on the yields and properties of oils produced from oil shale, lignite and subbituminous coal using the standard assay method developed by the Bureau for oil-shale testing,. The purpose of this work, which is part of the general study of oil shales being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and cooperating agencies, was to obtain information on the amount and character of the yield of crude oil or tar from different typical oil shales, the yield of light oil or naptha that might be suitable for use in motor fuels, and other products of shale oil. As the west has large resources both of oil shale and low-grade non-coking coals, it is of interest to know the relative yields of tars, light oils, and combustible gases that can be produced from these coals when retorted under conditions similar to those suited for oil-shale retorting. Source of Samples The coal samples were obtained from deposits on or adjacent to the public lands in the States of the Rocky Mountain region. Many of the mines sampled are operating under Government leases or permits. The number of coal samples secured from the various states are: Colorado, 6; Montana, 9; north Dakota, 6; New Mexico. 1; South Dakota, 1; Wyoming, 9. Of these samples, 14 were lignite coal, 16 subbituminous coal, and a bituminous coal. The standard channel method of the Bureau of Mines was used for sampling. Coal samples received at the Boulder Office weighed about twelve pounds each, and duplicate samples were sent to the Pittsburgh Station for proximate and ultimate analyses. The origin of the samples and description of the deposits are given in Table 1.

Recent experiments used catalysts of plate assemblies in synthesizing high-Btu gas and gasoline indirectly from coal. A gas with a heating value of 925 to 943 Bt-: per cubic foot has been prod u la the hot-gas-recycle pilot plant from synthesis gas (3H2+100) with lathe turnings used as catalyst in the first reactor, and assemblies of parallel sprayed plats of nickel in the second. Solid plates made of Raney nickel, and steel and aluminum plates sprayed with Raney nickel or nickel oxide were tested. Those catalysts had very low resistance to gas flow; 90 percent lower than nickel granules used in previous experiments. In a single stage of synthesis thee nickel plates were only partially successful. Although the heating values of the product gas ranged from 856 to 941 Btu per cubic foot, the carbon monoxide content of he gas was above 0.1 percent. Both steel and wrought turnings were tested in single-stage synthesis, but the conversion of hydrogen and carbon monoxide was too low to attain the desired heating value of 900 Btu per cubic foot in the product gas. Assemblies of plates thermally sprayed with fusel iron were tried in an experiment to make gasoline. A gasoline yield of 52 percent (of the hydro¬carbons produced) was obtained using a 1H2-10O feed These sprayed assemblies were in service for 1,500 hours, the longest that this type of catalyst has been used. When a second reactor containing Raney nickel catalyst was added in series with the first reactor, complete utilization of the feed gas was obtained because in addition to the liquid product, a high-Btu gas with a heating value of 800 Btu per cubic foot was made.

Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. An evaluation is made of a lime-soda sinter process for extracting alumina from clay. In this process, alumina is extracted by sintering clay with soda ash and limestone and then leaching the sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution. The sodium aluminate solution formed during leaching is separated from the residue and treated with lime in autoclaves to remove dissolved silica before alumina trihydrate is precipitated with carbon dioxide. The tri-hydrate is then calcined to a-alumina. Two options, dry grinding and wet grinding, are used in the sintering step. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day are $72 million for the dry grinding option and $66 million for the wet grinding option on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0. Specific geographic locations of plant and raw material sources are not assigned, but, since this process requires large quantities of both lime-stone and clay, the plant site is considered as variable with relation to the clay mine and limestone quarry. A nomograph is given to find operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. If the plant is located nearer the limestone quarry so that the delivered cost of clay is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $76.47 and $71.61 per ton of alumina for the dry grinding and wet grinding options, respectively. On the other hand, if the plant is located nearer the clay mine so that the delivered cost of clay is $1 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $2 per ton, the operating costs are $80.15 for dry grinding and $75.34 for wet grinding.

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

The petroleum sector continued to dominate Ecuador's economic activity in 1978, accounting for nearly 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of total export earnings. In 1978, a more flexible petroleum export price was adopted which permitted an expansion of foreign market opportunities. During 1979, Ecuador took advantage of disruptions in the world petroleum supply and renegotiated existing export contracts to accomodate the rapidly escalating world market price. Petroleum sales on the spot market were maximized, and prices reached unprecedented levels. By taking royalty payments in-kind, Ecuador increased its volume of petroleum available for term and spot sales. Although the volume remained about the same as in 1978, the total value of 1979 petroleum exports increased to about $920 million, reflecting a 76% increase over the $523 million received for 1978 crude oil exports. Concerned about its steadily decreasing petroleum reserves (recently estimated at about 1.1 billion barrels), rapidly increasing and heavily subsidized domestic consumption, and the prospect of having to import substantial amounts of petroleum by 1983, Ecuador announced plane which it anticipates will double reserves within the next 5 years. The Government plans to spend $1 billion over the 5-year period. Plans include drilling 325 exploration and development wells and establishment of a secondary recovery program for the Sachs and shushufindi fields. Some exploration wells are expected to reach a depth of 17,000 feet. It is thought that substantial reserves exist in the southeast Amazon region. Late in 1979, it was announced that some 10 million hectares will be available for exploration tenders-probably in blocks of about 200,000 hectares each-in the Amazon jungle of the Orients and in the coastal and offshore regions. The Government planned to commission a private, independent analysis of Ecuador's petroleum reserves that would also include recommendations on efficient production levels.

"A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. "Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States killed 234 employees during January 1924, according to reports from State mine inspectors to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, Included in the number of fatalities are 68 deaths caused by two explosions during the month, one explosion occurring in a mine at Johnson City, Ill., and causing 32 deaths, and the other in a mine at Shanktown, Pa., and causing 36 deaths. The fatality rate for the month was 3.94 per million tons, based on a production of 59,435,000 tons of coals In January 1923 the fatality rate was 3.52, based on 206 deaths and an output of 58,458,000 tons.Bituminous mines in all States reported 202 fatal accidents, the production being 51,170,000 tons., and the fatality rate being 3.92, as compared with 3.28 for January last year, For the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, the reports covered 32 fatalities, which, on the month's output of 7,955,000 tons, indicated a fatality rate of 4.02 per million tons, as against 4.89 for January 1923.As compared with January 1923, the reports for January of the present year indicated lower fatality rates per million tons for all of the main causes of accidents except explosions. For falls of roof and coal, the fatality rate per million tons declined from 1.85 in January 1923 to 1,68 in January 1924; for haulage accidents the rate declined from 0.62 to 0.42; for explosives, from 0.19 to 0.12; for electricity, from 0.12 to 0.07. This chapter includes tables for 1982 that were not available in time for publication of the 1982 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1983. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1988 was estimated at $21.1 billion, an increase of $1.5 billion over the value for 1982. This is a reversal of last year's downturn in value from that of 1981, which was the only decrease noted since 1971; hence, an overall trend of increasing values has been maintained for 12 years, except for 1982. Although the reversal is a basis for cautious economic optimism, it is tempered by continued problems in the domestic mining industry: inadequate funds for capital investment and competition with other countries that have lower production costs. Output of metal commodities in 1983 increased for 8 out of 21 metals, and metal values, in general, increased for 9 of the metals. Output of nonmetal commodities was mixed, with 24 nonmetals showing increases, 20 showing decreases, and 2 unchanged. Nonmetal values were also mixed in 1982: 25 showed increases, 20 declined, and 1 was unchanged. Improvements in the international metals market have not been forthcoming because of the continued depressed prices for major metals. Governments in foreign producing countries have been concerned with maintaining employment and continuing foreign exchange flows through mineral exports. Consequently, the excess of supply in the face of shrinking demand brought downward pressure on metal prices in general, except for the precious metals. On the domestic front, this situation means U.S. mining companies must become even more cost efficient. The major trend in the mining industry in 1983 was to cut costs further, reduce or stabilize total production, reduce outlays for major capital equipment, modify existing systems and equipment, and streamline operations. Most of the accomplishments reported herein reflect this trend.
