Studies were carried out to examine the effect of introducing varying levels of a pisolitic limonite (Yandi) into an Australian iron ore blend. Compared with other ores in the blend Yandi is more porous. This structure is found to have a considerable effect on the sintering behaviour of the blends. Pilot-scale sintering studies and plant trials showed that sinter plant productivity, sinter reducibility and the low-temperature reduction degradation index altered significantly when the level of Yandi in the ore blend exceeded 15 wt%. The improvement in the reducibility is thought to be a direct result of increased porosity in the sinter and the presence of highly reducible pseudo-relict haematite. Plant trials have also shown that operational changes could be made to the sinter plant to avoid potential deterioration of productivity

"The absence of homogeneity, in dust-clouds underground indicates the use of a method in which the volume of air sampled is an appreciable proportion of the total volume under consideration. Of the available methods, only the impinger and gravimetric techniques seem to comply with this requirement. In practice, greater efficiency of collection of the smaller particles is possible by the use of a gravimetric filter than with the impinger. For this reason if, as seems desirable, a standard method of sampling be sought, the adoption of a gravimetric technique is to be recommended.Provided that the amount of dust collected is reasonably large, the paper filter would seem to be preferable to the solid crystal type of filter on account of its greater convenience in use.Alternative methods of sampling are desirable to cover the wide range of practical conditions."

Early computerised blast monitoring equipment consisted of a digital version of the existing analogue machines with, perhaps, a few enhancements. Many additional facilities have since been developed to enable the efficient collection of high quality data. These developments are examined with reference to digital sampling, triggering systems, the storage of complete recordings and signal processing. Recent advances have been made in the use of blast monitoring systems that comprise multiple blast monitoring locations with centralised control and data collection. Software has been developed to help record blast parameters and assess environmental effects. Computer databases have many advantages over their paper counterparts. Data can be easily retrieved and processed. The scaled distances used in the prediction and control of peak particle velocities can be calculated rapidly when the data are obtained directly from a database. Since the whole vibration signal can now be recorded, signal processing can be used to provide information such as signal length, dominant frequency and response spectra.

Two graphical techniques which are commonly used to assess batch separations are analysed in terms of reaction kinetics to provide a more powerful method of evaluation. An alternative and more general approach, based on the selection and application of suitable efficiency criteria, is also presented. The method proposed distinguishes between selection and collection efficiency in flotation and can be used to estimate the degree of liberation in the feed. "Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

For a criterion to be useful it must either demonstrate directly the role of exhalative processes in the formation of a deposit or describe a unique attribute of exhalative deposits. Few of those employed in previous investigations entirely satisfy either condition. The limitations of three of the most frequently employed criteria are illustrated by studies of the geology of the King Island Scheelite deposit in Tasmania.

Most cluster analysis techniques are not well suited to the analysis of engineering data as they have been designed for more qualitative data that tend to produce compact clusters. A clustering technique is described which develops and uses local cluster shapes to build clusters that are suitable for use in engineering applications. The technique is finding application in the analysis of many types of data, particularly where multiple trends and outlying points occur in multiple dimensions. Applications of particular interest are the calibration of on-stream analytical equipment and the analysis of data on plant performance. In both cases the multidimensional nature of the data renders manual analysis very difficult

It is now widely accepted that the metal-rich waters found in the oil wells are possible present-day analogues of the mineralising solutions that formed the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits throughout mid-continental USA and elsewhere. A study characterising the trace-metal content provides additional circumstantial evidence for a genetic link between sediment-hosted mineral deposits and basin brines: Ag, Co, Ni, As and Mo, detected in the scale, are locally present in accessory minerals in MVT deposits and the levels of Ag found in the wells support the conclusion that sedimentary sources for silver should be considered in evaluating the origin of Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in sedimentary terrains

The addition of copper oxide to a borosilicate slag resulted in the breakdown of the silicate network and a dramatic decrease in viscosity. With increasing borax to silica ratio the viscosity was reduced by two mechanisms. First, rising sodium oxide content promoted cleavage of the Si-O bonds. Second, increasing boric oxide (B2O3) content increased the number of trigonal borate units that were converted to tetrahedral borate units by sodium oxide and copper oxide. The BO4(4-) tetrahedra decreased the local silicate symmetry, thus disrupting the silicate network and lowering the viscosity. The activation energy decreased with increasing temperature and increasing copper oxide content

In 1903, seventeen years after mining of the Witwatersrand gold-bearing reefs started, the findings erf the Miners' Phthisis Commission (Transvaal) resulted in the initiation of measures with the object of controlling dust production. The substance of these measures was as follows: Removal of persons from places where they would be exposed to blasting fumes; use of water to suppress dust made in drilling and in other operations; supply and control of air to working-places; filtration of dusty air; and determination of the amount of the dust in the air. Broadly speaking, progress in dust control has followed these four lines with increasing success as the nature of the problem has become better known. Complete success has not, however, been achieved, partly because increasing mechanization of mining has intensified the problem and partly because the application of these measures is not infallible, being subject, in many cases, to human control. A brief summary of the development of these measures will lead to a description of present-day practice.

This paper describes the history of civil engineering tunnelling and developments in soft ground techniques during the 19th and 20th centuries, culminating in the design and use of high speed tunnelling machines for all types of ground conditions. Some of the problems encountered are outlined, and descriptions are given of some contemporary developments in rock tunnelling techniques, with comparisons of methods used in the mining industry.

The low concentration of diamond in workable deposits requires very large samples for grade estimation, and results, even then, may be erratic and difficult to interpret. Although the Poisson probability distribution cannot accurately describe the occurrence of diamond, it is suggested that it gives a better estimate of grade than conventional methods, even from single samples. Examples illustrate the simple calculation required.

A study of samples from three sectors of the mine, which was worked from Roman times to 1991, revealed different textures, mineral associations and distributions of trace elements in the sulphides. In the last decade before closure, grades of sphalerite concentrate were in the range 51.67-53.30% Zn and 2.21-2.86% Pb and of galena concentrate 69.43-71.62% Pb and 4.70-8.36% Zn, while the estimated by-product germanium content of sphalerite concentrates sold was 300-400 g/t. Passing the different run-of-mine materials through the same concentrator flowsheet produced middlings and tailings during the preconcentration processing. Separate and alternative treatment of run-of-mine products would have yielded improved recoveries of sphalerite and galena and better values of by-product germanium and cadmium

Discussion by A.C. Fitzgerald of the paper, published in Trans. IMM A, vol.104, 1995, p.B121-B135, is presented together with the authors' response. Fitzgerald points out a number of problems with the idea of mineralising fluids leaving no trace in the large volumes of rock traversed before depositing all minerals of value in a particular horizon or rock type with which the required isobaric or isothermic surface also coincides. He suggested that in the case of the Rooiberg tin deposits, the Lebowa Granites may be batholiths that reached the surface and were capped by sheets of their own volcanics. The authors agree that they had considered a possible syngenetic origin for the stratabound deposits, explain that no conclusive evidence for this could be found, discuss the relative ages of the sediments and volcanics of the Rooiberg Fragment and explain the role of its low-intensity deformation and flat dip in the coincidence of an isobaric-isothermic surface with the lithological stratification

Attention is also drawn to the recent privatisation of the electric power and gas industries and the intention of the present Government to follow suit as regards coal mining. The subject of mining law is discussed under the headings: minerals or rights that have been nationalised or are vested in the Crown; ownership (of land and mineral rights); special customs; tracing of owners; right of support (arising from mining); ancillary rights and easements; obtaining prospecting and mining rights; planning permission; statutory aids to obtaining rights; notes on the history, law and practices of petroleum (onshore and offshore), gas, coal, prescribed substances, gold and silver; electricity; safety, health and welfare; and technical information and boreholes. A correction in the subsequent issue amends errors on p.A75 and A82 and regrets the publication of misinformation on the availability of grants
