THE cement plant nearest to Nova Scotia is not far from Montreal. Cement is a heavy product which, because of its relatively low value, cannot stand a high freight charge without unduly enhancing its cost. This is one reason why cement costs are high in Nova Scotia. The regular retail price per bag (8772 lb.) in Antigonish is 85 cents, which would be $3.40 per Canadian barrel of 350 pounds, or $3.65 per American barrel of 376 pounds.It is said that the lowest wholesale price in Halifax is 65 cents per sack, which would be $2.60 per Canadian barrel or about $2.80 per American barrel. According to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the average factory price for cement in 1937 was $1.48 per American barrel, which is practically the same as the value per barrel indicated in Dominion statistics for the Canadian output during that year. The difference between $3.40 and $1.48 is $1.92. It is evident that the average user of cement in the Mari-times pays a stiff premium because Maritime cement raw materials have not been developed. Rock-wool, the manufacture of which is rapidly increasing in Ontario and the United States, is much needed for building insulation in the cold climate of Nova Scotia.

The area covered by the present paper consists of about fifty square miles in the immediate vicinity of the settlement of St. Lawrence, which is on the Southern extremity of the Burin peninsula on the south coast of Newfoundland. Physiography Physiographically, the area is part of the Atlantic upland, equivalent to the New England province of the United States. Evidences of two erosion surfaces are to be seen truncating the intrusives and the folded volcanics and sedimentary rocks. The older erosion surface is represented by small monadnocks from 650 to 750 feet in height with the younger surface covering most of the area and characterized by rounded subdued topography with maximum relief of two to three hundred feet and numerous ponds and bogs. These surfaces have been correlated with the High Valley and the Lawrence peneplains of Newfoundland. On the Avalon peninsula, these peneplains have elevations of, respectively, from 1,300 to 1,700 feet and from 500 to 1,000 feet. Glaciation The entire peninsula has been glaciated, with lee-and-stoss slopes showing on the highest hills in the immediate vicinity, many of which have striae and erratics on their summits. The lee-and-stoss slopes, the glacial striae, and the distribution of certain rocks found in the drift and whose source outcrops are known, indicate a southward direction of ice movement.

NO. 3 winze, the sixth shaft to be sunk on the San Antonio property, is practically a duplicate of No. 3 shaft, which was the main shaft prior to the installation of the larger hoisting equipment in 1939. It is collared on the tenth, or 1,500-ft., level, and goes down vertically to the sixteenth, or 2,500-ft., level, with a loading pocket, spill pocket, and sump below this. It is 1,000 feet east of No. 3 shaft. All ore, men, and materials are handled through the latter. The winze location with reference to the rock formation is shown in Figure 1. (In plan, this section strikes N.30°E. and cuts most of the main orebodies of the mine normal to their strike.) It is collared eighty feet inside the footwall contact of the basalt and cuts through it before reaching the eleventh level. In this location there will be no ore tied up in shaft pillars, as the closest ore to the shaft is on the tenth level, and here it is eighty feet northeast of the collar. The winze headframe and hoist-room straddle the main haulage to the No. 3 shaft, on the tenth level (see Figure 2). At no time during the excavation for the headframe and hoist-room was the general routine work of this haulage held up.

Introduction The equilibrium between copper, zinc, and chlorine may be considered as the simultaneous equilibrium of the two separate chemical reactions of formation of the stable chlorides of copper and zinc at the temperature of the reaction i.e., l440°K. (1,167°C., 2,133°?F.)§ [Zn(g) +Ciz(g) ZnCl2z(g). ... (1) ] [2Cu(l)+Cbi'g) Cu2Cl2(l 1 ....... (21 ] Subtracting, [Zn(g) +Cu2(Clz(l i ZnClz(g) +2Cu!l) ... . (3) ] If this reaction is carried out with a copper-zinc alloy at some constant temperature above the melting point of brass, and at a total pressure of one atmosphere, the equilibrium concentrations obtained will depend on the free energy decrease .of the reaction as written in (3) and on the activities of the various components in. the reaction mixture. If the equilibrium is examined from the point of view of the phase rule, it is a three-component system, and if it exists in two phases (liquid and gas) it will have three degrees of freedom. If the restrictions of constant temperature and pressure are imposed, the degrees of freedom are reduced to one. This means that, in a two-phase system under these conditions, each different alloy phase will be associated with a gas phase of constant composition.

The results of laboratory, bench-scale and semi-commercial investigations of a method for adding surfactant (technical-grade lignosulphonate) to the process of pressure leaching of nickel-containing pyrrhotite concentrates have been discussed. Lt has been demonstrated that feeding of technical-grade lignosulphonate distributed along the length of an autoclave ensures a reduction in its requirement by a factor of 1.5 to 2 as compared with single-point feeding; it also results in a decrease by 5% in the unit requirement of metallized iron-bearing precipitator in the process of non-ferrous metals precipitation and reduces by 0.05 to 0.1% (abs.) the nickel and copper contents in the tailings of the given process. Technical solutions have been proposed for commercial introduction of the process.

The microstructure in modified semi-solid ALTHIX (A356) alloy consists of aAl phase with Al/Si eutectic structure. Silicon phase in eutectic structure is coral like with fine fibers. The lack of good ductility in this alloy is related to the presence of silicon fibers. Accordingly many investigations have been recently conducted to modify the Si morphology through Thermomechanical processing on this alloy. In the present work an ALTHIX (A356) alloy was deformed at 450°C, 500°C and 540°C through different strain rates. Consequently the silicon fibers were broken into small particles. The results indicated that the Si particles may coarsen according to Ostwald ripening mechanism at 540°C deformed by rate of0.0005 sec-1 & 0.0001 sec-1-

The composite cathode system based on Ce0.9Gdo.1O2_,5 electrolyte with a painted cathode was used for an intermediate temperature (500-700°C) solid oxide fuel cell. This cathode system was chosen due to its excellent thermal expansion match to the electrolyte, its relatively high conductivity (115 S cm-1 at 700°C), and its low activation energy for oxygen reduction (99 kJ/mol). It was found that the decrease of sintering temperature of the composite cathode system produces a significant decrease in charge transfer resistances to a level of 0.25 SI cm2. The conductivity measurements of porous samples produced values between 40 and 88 S/cm for porosities of 30-40%.

Ontario leads Canada in production of structural materials and ranks third in production of non-metallic minerals. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1997 was $1.6 billion. The province is the leading producer of nepheline syenite, salt, talc, clay products, cement, lime, sand and gravel, stone and a major producer of gypsum and silica. Barite, sulphur in smelter gas, elemental sulphur, tremolite, serpentine, gemstones and peat are also produced. Table 1 shows recent actual industrial mineral production levels in Ontario. Other industrial minerals, including phosphate, petalite, diamonds, wollastonite, vermiculite, kyanite, garnet, graphite, silica, kaolin, dimension stone and anorthosite, have been the target of exploration and development projects. Investment opportunities exist at all levels from grass-root prospect through to production level.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

Laboratory testing examined the effect of a variety of intrinsic rock properties and environment conditions that influence the adhesive bond between rock and thin spray-on liners. The liner materials used for these tests were Tekflex, provided by Fosroc, Castonite, provided by Rohms and Haas Co., Rockweb provided by Spray-on Plastics, and CS 1251 2K, provided by Master Builders. Some of the variables examined include: rock strength (tensile/compressive strength) rock mineralogy, rock surface roughness (grain size, fracture/joint roughness), and surface contamination (oil, water or dust). Under optimal conditions, adhesive strengths reaching at least 3 MPa can be achieved. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa.

A novel process for the preparation of a-Al2O3 from secondary aluminum dross was studied. Factors including alkali dross ratio, salt dross ratio, smelting temperature, smelting time, leaching temperature, leaching time, and the solid-liquid ratio, which possibly influence the transfer of Al into water were studied, and the feasibility of using seed precipitation as a treatment technology of the leachate was discussed. The optimum condition of the process was determined as: alkali dross ratio 1.3, salt dross ratio 0.7, smelting temperature 500°C, smelting time 60min, leaching temperature 60°C, leaching time 30min, solid-liquid ratio 1:4. The results show that using the seed precipitation method, the leaching of aluminum reaches 92.71%, demonstrating the technique as a feasible and effective treatment technology of the leachate.

The success of a project is defined by meeting the financial performance objectives of the business case within a stipulated timeframe. Early in design, little information is normally available; the uncertainty introduces risk to the project outcome. Using a range of risk management tools and techniques, a project can be developed from front end loading phases 1 through 3 (FEL1–FEL3), and project implementation (FEL4) and then into operations with an optimized probability of success. For every project element, the risk management framework embodies: establishing a context; assessing risk (identify, analyze, and evaluate); and treating risk. Embedded within design activities, this process mitigates or eliminates risks. Monitoring and control, as well as extensive communication and consultation with stakeholders, is integral to the risk management process.

Ammonium carbamate has been used as a reagent for the leaching of copper from the copper oxide ore found in the Honghe state, Yunnan province, China. In order to find the optimal conditions for the leaching of copper from this copper oxide ore,the effects of several processing parameters, including the concentration, time, temperature, particle size and stirring intensity have been investigated. The results of these optimization experiments showed that the leaching rate of copper reached up to 72.76% under the following conditions: liquid-to-solid ratio of 10:1, ammonium carbamate concentration of 2.5mol/L, leaching temperature of 45 °C, stirring speed of 300rpm, a reaction time of 1.5 h and 85% by weight thereof passes through a sieve having 0.074 mm.

Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is a promising thermal insulator for high temperature environments due to its thermal stability and chemical inertness. As was demonstrated with other technical ceramics (e.g., Alumina), addition of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) to a ceramic matrix may significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic. In this work, 8 mol% YSZ with 0.2, 0.5 and 1wt% CNTs composites were prepared via Spark Plasma Sintering process. The densification, Vicker’s microhardness, specific gravity and microstructure evolution of the composites were investigated. The results suggest that the addition of up to 1wt% CNTs to YSZ yielded optimal combination of the studied properties. At higher addition levels, the specific gravity decreased and clustering of CNTs occurred, leading to poor densification and a relative loss of performance.

The goal of this paper is to present the carbon footprint of Chilean cathodic copper, as a function of the electricity generation mix, ore grade, and process efficiency. Ore grades and acid leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning (LX-SX-EW) yields in the range 0.5-1.0% and 60-80%, respectively, were considered here. Additionally, electricity supply from two Chilean suppliers, SING (1.0 ton CO2/MWh) and SIC (0.4 ton CO2/MWh) was assessed. Simulation results show that oxide plants located in northern Chile, served by the SING network, feature carbon footprint within 4.3 - 11.4 MWh I ton cathodic copper, as compared with 3.5 - 9.3 MWh I ton copper in plants served by SIC. The footprint was found to increase as ore wade and process yields decrease.

"The name 'Canadian Shield' is used for a vast area; largely in northeastern; Canada; underlain by Precambrian rocks. The part in Canada has an area; of about 1; 790; 000 square miles. Extensions in Greenland; Labrador; Newfoundland; and the United States bring the total area to around 2; 800; 000; square miles. The boundaries of the Canadian part are shown in Fig. 1.; At its margins; the Precambrian rocks can be seen at many places to; extend beneath a cover of flat-lying Palxozoic or later sediments. Information; from borings in the Plains and natural exposures in mountain-built belts; show that similar rocks form a large part of the continental platform. The; Shield; therefore; is a large exposure of what may be regarded as the foundation; of the continent."

A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling's report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known' for many years, and on Jeffrey's map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".
