The hot deformation behavior of Pure Mg and Mg-0.29Ce alloy were studied by isothermal hot compression tests in the temperature range of 250 - 500°C and strain rate range of 10-3 - 102 s-1 in a computer-controlled 50kN servo hydraulic universal testing machine (UTM). The results show that the flow stress of Mg pure and Mg-0.29Ce alloy increases with strain rate and decreases after a peak value, indicating dynamic recovery and recrystallization. Process efficiency was increased by nearly 10 to 12% by addition of Ce in Mg. Mg pure exhibits instability zones between 250-275°C at 10 ? 102 s-1 and 400¬500°C at 101 ? 102 s-1 temperatures and strain rates respectively, rest is the safe deformation zone. Wherein, Mg-0.29 Ce exhibits two low efficiency zones from 250 ? 300°C at 10-2? 10° s-1, 400 ? 500°C at 101 ? 102s-1 and high efficiency zone at 450 ? 500°C at 10-3? 10-1s-1. 4D process maps were generated for the above said alloys which illustrate contours of power dissipation and instability in the 3D space of strain rate, temperature and strain.

The “Mill Redesign Project” was completed on time, under budget and delivered the promised improvement in recoveries.This paper describes the methodology of the Mill Redesign Project team, details of the process improvements and the critical success factors that helped the team deliver on its promises.With a payback of under one year, the Mill Redesign Project will play a key role in ensuring a competitive edge as Inco embarks on its second century of operation. IntroductionIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. This is one such story. It is the story of the Mill Redesign Project at Inco’s Clarabelle mill in Copper Cliff, Ontario."

Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. "Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . The orange waste after lime water modification was converted into promising adsorbents for fluoride by metal loading reaction. The effectiveness and mechanism of fluoride adsorption on metal loaded orange waste gel from synthetic and real plating solution were investigated. Amount of zirconium(IV), aluminium(III), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), titanium(IV), vanadium(IV) and tin(IV) loaded on orange waste from aquearegia dissolution were evaluated to be 1.62, 1.16, 0.93, 0.95, 1.20, 1.12, 0.97 mmol/g respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of zirconium(IV), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), iron(III) and aluminium(III) loaded orange waste for fluoride ions were evaluated to be 1.74, 0.91, 1.07, 0.98 and 1.01 mmol/g from aqueous solution. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption by metal loaded orange waste was inferred to be ligand exchange reaction. Application of zirconium(IV) loaded saponified orange juice residue(SOJR) for real plating solution showed effective removal of trace concentration of fluoride down to the accepted standard. The negligible interference of co existing anions like nitrate, carbonate, sulphate and chloride makes zirconium(IV) loaded SOJR a promising sorbent for waste water treatment. The adsorbed fluoride from fluoride loaded zirconium(IV)-SOJR was effectively desorbed by using alkali solution for its regeneration. This work shed light on the potential application of metal loaded SOJR to remediate fluoride contaminated water for environmental relevance.

"The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company are planning to construct a permanent storage facility for high-level nuclear waste at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository relates to large fracture shear displacements, since these may damage intersected waste containers. Although details in fracture surface geometries are known to influence slip magnitudes and distributions, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties due to lack of relevant field-scale data and to limitations in available modelling tools. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to explore the possibilities to use the distinct element code 3DEC to generate and analyze models with isolated, non-planar fractures and, based on the results of such models, get perspectives on the influence of basic disturbances such as ridges, steps and waves. Given the model set-up, fracture segments with orientations deviating from the critical one will contribute to stabilize the fracture. As a result, all analyzed non-planar fractures slip less than the critically oriented planar fracture. We demonstrate that the angle of deviation is the most influential parameter determining the slip magnitude for comparable surface geometries. Similarly inclined steps and ridges have almost equal slip reductions despite differences in surface area restricting the movement. Although it may be possible to translate the influence of such irregularities to an effective coefficient of friction that could be used as input to models with idealized planar fractures, additional analyses with randomly shaped and distributed asperities, different fracture sizes and with alternative stress loads, need to be carried out to devise a defensible strategy for this type of parameter variation. INTRODUCTIONThe Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company’s (SKB) concept for deep geological storage of high-level nuclear waste is the KBS-3 method according to which the waste will be encapsulated in copper canisters and deposited, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, in vertical deposition holes at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock (SKB 2011). A site has been selected in the Forsmark area, which is located some 120 km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository that has been identified by SKB (SKB 2011) is related to large shear displacements along repository host rock fractures induced by a nearby earthquake, since these may cause mechanical damage to intersected waste containers. Due to lack of relevant data at the appropriate field scale and to limitations in available modelling tools, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties. The standard numerical tool, 3DEC (Itasca 2013), used in SKB’s rock mechanics analyses, for example, generates planar fractures by default. Results from dynamic 3DEC earthquake-models (Fälth et al. 2010) currently provide input to layout decisions, i.e., the diameter of the smallest planar fractures that must be avoided when deciding on waste container positions at different distances from potential earthquake faults. It is, however, well known that fracture surfaces are rough or undulating on a wide range of scales (e.g., Candela et al. 2012) and that such deviations from planarity influence the mechanical behaviour of the fractures (e.g., Dieterich and Smith 2009, Marshall and Morris 2012, Ritz and Pollard 2012). It will probably never be a realistic option to attempt to represent the geometrical complexity of a population of fractures of different size, shape and surface structure in any large-scale rock mechanical analysis relevant for the performance assessments of the nuclear waste repository. "Abstract - The Burnt Timber gold deposit is located in the Paleoproterozoic Lynn Lake greenstone belt of the Trans-Hudson Orogen, Manitoba. The deposit occurs along the Johnson shear zone, and is hosted by enriched and depleted tholeiitic volcanic arc basalts cut by feldspar porphyry dikes. The Johnson shear zone is a regional, belt-parallel structure characterized by the intensification of the regional S2 foliation. At the Burnt Timber deposit, S2 is folded by centimeter- to meter-scale, Z-shaped, F3 chevron folds that have an axial planar S3 crenulation cleavage. Within the 20 to 30 m-wide core zone of the shear zone, S2 and F3 are transposed parallel to S3 and the volcanic rocks are strongly sheared parallel to S3. The presence of a steeply plunging stretching lineation, together with dextral shear sense indicators along both S2 and S3 on horizontal surfaces, suggest that the Johnson shear zone is a dextral transpression zone. Gold was introduced in pyritic, biotitic, and carbonatized mafic volcanic rocks along the core of the shear zone. Mylonitic mafic volcanic rocks contain localized high-grade zones (=10 g/t Au) that differ from wider carbonatized, low-grade zones (<3 g/t Au) by the presence of deformed gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins. High-grade zones are also associated with swarms of quartz-pyrite veins that cut across sericitized and carbonatized feldspar porphyry dikes, which acted as brittle, competent bodies during shearing. Gold deposition in the high-grade zones was controlled by the channeling of hydrothermal fluid along the core of the shear zone during shearing of the volcanic rocks, and brittle fracturing of the porphyry dikes. Des zones à haute teneur associées à des essaims de veinules de quartz et de pyrite sont aussi notées dans des dykes porphyriques à plagioclase altérés en séricite et en carbonates; ces dykes se sont comportés comme des corps compétents durant le cisaillement. La déposition de l’or dans le zones à haute teneur a été contrôlée par la circulation du fluide hydrothermal au coeur de la zone de cisaillement durant la déformation des roches volcaniques et la fracturation des dykes porphyriques."

SIGMA MINES is situated in the township of Bourlamaque, Abitibi County, Quebec. It is a gold producer, and presently treats an average of 1,200 tons of ore per day, at a grade of approximately 0.18 oz. per ton recovered. The mill started operations in March, I937, at a rate of 300 tons per day. This was increased to 800 tons in I940, and to 1,000 tons by I943. The rate was cut back during the war years, but was brought back up to capacity by I948. The mill tonnage was in-creased to the present 1,200 tons per day in I960. The underground workings are serviced through No. 2 Shaft (Figure 1), which, with 24 operating levels, extends from surface to a depth of 3,317 feet. When depth exploration was decided upon, two possibilities were considered: (a) deepen the main shaft by1,000 feet; (b) put down a winze for the same distance.

The formation of oxides during the dehydration of MgC12,6H20, Bischofite, was studied by heating the bischofite over a range of time and temperatures in ambient atmosphere. Using a methanol-leaching technique developed by authors, the oxides that formed were isolated, identified and assayed. Three distinct regions of oxide stability were identified. The oxide produced at dehydration temperatures less than 300 °C was Mg2(OH)3C1,2H2O; at 300 °C, mixtures of MgOHC1 and Mg2(OH)3C1.2H2O were formed and at 400 °C, MgOHC1 was the only oxide produced. The presence of MgO observed in the products of the dehydration of bischofite at temperatures above 400 °C was due to the thermal decomposition of the MgOHC1 that was formed while the sample was heating to over 400 °C.

Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedw ell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1% (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2% improvement in the circuit underflow density. The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil® dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary to solution neutralisation improvements.

A preliminary investigation has been conducted to determine the conditions for the precipitation of phosphate from the liquor produced after a hydrochloric acid pre-leach and rare-earth recovery from a rare earth containing fluorapatite concentrate from the Nolans rare earth deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The results show that at 50oC the phosphate can be precipitated in two stages using limestone to produce a Stage 1 precipitate containing most of the impurities including iron (94%), aluminium (92%), fluoride (98%), uranium (84%) and thorium (94%), followed by a relatively pure Stage 2 dicalcium phosphate precipitate (DCP) containing only 0.05% Fe, 0.05% Al, 0.1% F, 0.01% U, and <0.01% Th. The initial Stage 1 precipitate contained about 25% of the phosphate while the remaining 75% reported to the Stage 2 phosphate precipitate. Depending on the required radioactivity specifications, the amount of phosphate in the Stage 1 precipitate could be reduced. Reagent requirements were 11.4 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre of solution for the Stage 1 precipitate and 39.7 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre for Stage 2. The analysis of radionuclide balance indicated that radionuclides deported mainly to the final filtrate (86.4%) compared to Stage 1 precipitate (5.4%) and Stage 2 precipitate (8.2%). Settling and pressure filtration tests indicated the precipitates were both readily settled and filtered. The final moisture contents of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 precipitates were 62.5% and 49.3%, respectively.

Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. Large-scale industrial production of pipe began with longitudinal hot pressure welding of wrought iron by passage of skelp (narrow strip with beveled edges) through a die or bell that curled it about a longitudinal axis until the edges were forced together. Such small to medium tubes could be reduced by rolling or drawing; with threaded connections, they were excellent for distribution of clean water and of illuminating gas for street, home and industrial lighting. Although steel lacks the fluxing slag for pressure welding it has hot strength similar to iron; hot-pressure bell welding was advantageously transferred to steel in long coiled strip with 50% higher cold strength. For pipe without weld-line defects, hot cupping followed by Pilger mill rolling produced tubing that revolutionized bicycle quality and high-pressure service for boilers and chemical processing. Mannesman hot rotary piercing produced long thick walled tube that permitted reduction or expansion by rolling to provide pipe sections up to 60 cm diameter and 12 m long. During 1910 - 1940, oil and gas pipeline technologies, notably welding evolved markedly as they proliferated in the United States, in response to far-flung petroleum fields, expanding industry consumption and the automobile revolution. In the Second World War combat pipelines were laid rapidly, such as: the Canol line through the Yukon to Alaska, and fuel supply lines across the channel and through liberated France. Perfection of welding techniques for both longitudinal and spiral weld large diameter pipe in combination with controlled-rolling of micro-alloyed steels made possible reliable Arctic pipelines. The development of pipe production and utilization in Canada is recounted. The fabrication techniques and metallurgical controls are explained.

Soluble potassium salts in bedded underground salt deposits supply most of The world demand for potassium f or agricultural and industrial use. The potassium salts, sylvite and carnallite, were f irs, noted in drillcores in southern Saskatchewan during The search for oil and gas in ihe early /940s. Problems in shafi sinking beset pioneering potash companies, however, and cominuous production did no, begin uniil 1962. Powsh deposits in southern Saskatchewan occur within ihe uppermost 60 111 of the Middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite a, depths in excess of 900 m. Four groups of po/ash-bearing haliie beds have been distinguished: the Esierha-::,y, White Bear, Belle Plaine and Paiience Lake members. Powsh deposiis extend a jell' kilomeires into Manitoba and south imo orth Dakoia and non heasiern Moniana. Individual potash-rich beds are extensive and consistent in grade and Th ickness. Local th ickening occurs where carnallite is the dominani poiash mineral. Th e preferred ore, sy lviniie, is a clean mixiure of sylvite and haliie. Carnalliie and insolubles are avoided wherever possible because of Their detrimenwl effects on mine stability, grade and refining. Sy lvin ite is exTracted by underground mining or brought TO swjace as brine in solution mining. Poiash is separaiedfrom halite byfloiation or sequential crystallization. The refined produci, potassium chloride, is employed as a fertilizer ingredient as well as in chemical and other industrial capaciiies. The ten poiash mines of Wesiern Canada all are in Saskatchewan and account for aboui 25 per cem of world production. Faciliiies are being expanded, and a new mine and refinery was planned for ihe Breden bury area. Deposiis in Manitoba also were being evaluaied.
