"A well-defined approach is essential to ensure the long-term success of a regional exploration program. Teck's approach in eastern Canada is designed to fulfill corporate objectives while recognizing certain unique parameters for exploration in the area. The elements of this approach include clearly defined objectives, technical considerations and personnel policies, all of which are equally important. The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-l990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.IntroductionAs one of Canada's oldest continuously operating mining companies, Teck Corporation traces its roots to Kirkland Lake, Ontario, with the development of the Teck-Hughes gold mine in 1913, later supplemented by production from the Lamaque gold mine in Val d'Or, Quebec. Control of the company was acquired by Temagami Mining Company, part of the Keevil Mining Group, in 1959. Credited as one of the first discoveries made using airborne geophysics, the Keevil Group had recently found the small but very high-grade copper deposits at Temagami, Ontario. These developments in eastern Canada formed a foundation for remarkable growth and Teck's present status as one of Canada's most successful and respected mining companies.Teck currently operates successful mining ventures across Canada and has international exposure through its association with Cominco Ltd., M.I.M. Holdings Limited and Metallgesellschaft AG. Operations in eastern Canada, however, remain an important component of Teck's ongoing success. The David Bell and Williams mines at Hernlo, Ontario, are Canada's lowest cost and largest gold operations, respectively. The Niobec Mine at Chicoutimi, Quebec, is North America's only significant producer of niobium. Teck maintains a 45070 interest in Golden Knight Resources Inc., part owner of the successful gold mining operation in the Casa Berardi area of northwestern Quebec. As a significant shareholder in Aur Resources Inc. and as a part owner, Teck is participating in the development of the Louvicourt deposit, a major base metal discovery at Val d'Or, Quebec."

Since the 14th CMMI conference, held in Edinburgh in 1990, at which a paper was presented by the author (Willis, 1990) reviewing the role of integrating new technology as a survival strategy for South African gold mines, considerable change has occurred in the South African mining industry. This paper reviews the current state of the industry and provides an update on the technologies discussed ten years ago. It reviews available technology and provides a broad economic assessment of these technologies if they were to be introduced in an integrated mining system with a focus on deep level mining below 3000 m. It also reviews possible future technologies currently being researched and developed by CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (Miningtek).

Various damage modes that evolve with time in polymer composite laminates, such as transverse cracking, vertical cracking, delamination, and fiber fracture, as well as the interaction among them, influence the time-dependent degradation in modulus (creep) and strength (creep rupture) of polymer composite laminates. This study is focused on modeling the time-dependent evolution of transverse cracking in [90] plies of a multidirectional polymer composite laminate [0m/190n]. This model uses a two-dimensional variational analysis to determine the stress state at any given creep time. The elastic stored energy, determined using this stress state, is compared with a critical energy for fracture to determine the crack evolution with creep time. Model predictions are compared with experimental results to validate the model.

Present authors have succeeded in single pass large draught rolling of AZ31 and ZK60A magnesium alloy sheets below 200 °C without heating rolls by raising rolling speed above 1000 m/min. Heavy reduction larger than 60% can be applied by single pass high speed rolling even at room temperature. The rolled sheets showed fine recrystallized microstructure by dynamic recrystallization. The improvement of workability at lower rolling temperature is due to temperature rise by plastic working. In high speed rolling, almost all of the work done by plastic deformation is converted into the heat that raises the temperature of the sheet during rolling because the heat did not flow out of the sheet by conduction and radiation within very short time.

Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the behaviour of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10 m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. The newest part of the lower part of the Q-chart gives more information on required support compared to older Q-system versions. The RRS can be described as a three part composite material with the 3rd component being the reinforced concrete beam (with no fibers) and with steel rebars that are placed in groups and sprayed with pneumatically applied shotcrete in layers. The RRS usually have a total thickness varying between 0.20 and 0.50 m and a width between 0.25 and 0.60 m respectively. They are placed at different distances along the tunnel axis depending on the rock mass quality.In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. This was done by writing a FISH subroutine which is implemented in the discontinuous numerical code Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) that takes into account the characteristics of the reinforced beam (height, width, number of steel rebars, and spacing) in the calculation process. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and in situ stresses (?H/?v = 0.5), and changing only the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam.The results show that: a) the S(fr) is almost overloaded in the first 4 hours after application in both tunnels; b) on the S(fr) and steel rebars, the stresses, axial and shear loads, as well as moments are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are increasing with time. The observed reduction in stresses and loads in both the S(fr) and reinforced beam is surprising. A possible explanation is that tunnel arches are self-supported to a lesser extent as time progresses due to redistribution of stresses in the nearby rock mass through the radial bolts. The loads in radial bolts are increasing by almost 25%. This can be seen from the overall results as we observe an increase in maximum principal stresses, displacements, shear displacements along joints and hydraulic apertures compared to tunnel baseline that has no support of any kind."

The solvent extraction properties exhibited by some /V,N'-tetrasubstituted malonamides to efficiently and selectively recover iron(III) from concentrated chloride leaching solutions can be found in the recent literature. The iron(III) extractive chemistry exhibited by some of these derivatives is revisited, in order to compare their chemistry with that shown by a few of the new malonamide compounds. The generally good extraction efficiency towards Fe(III), from >4 M hydrochloric acid solutions, and the relative ease of Fe(III) stripping by distilled water are remarkable findings that are confirmed for the malonamide derivatives described in this work. Furthermore, additional data regarding their selectivity towards Fe(III) extraction over several base metal ions and their behavior when subjected to successive Fe(III) extraction-stripping tests are also presented and discussed.

The mining industry in Turkey has been developing in the last 10 years. Mine wastes and tailings have thus been increasing, depending on the rising production rates. There are many problems related to accidents that occur in tailings damps. In this study, the applicability of the surface paste disposal (SPD) method for a Pb-Zn mine in western Turkey was examined. Density was 3.084 and specific surface area was 0.899 m2/g. The mill tailings have very low plasticity and show characteristics of clays and silts in terms of the Unified Soil Classification System. The particle size distribution of the tailings was 39.2% particles finer than 20 µm. The results of this study showed that the physical and chemical properties of mill tailings make them suitable for SPD.

Due to the ultrasonic testing and mechanical wind speed sensor have high requirement for the environmental of the coal mine, the charge induction wind speed detection method based on wavelet analysis is proposed. The same wavelet disturbance detection method is used at a fixed distance to obtain an induction signal to obtain a pass time, and then calculate the magnitude and speed of the wind. Simulation and verification experiments show that the method has application across a wide range of test speeds (up to 60 m/s). The metal probe causes little pipeline flow field interference. The method is particularly well-suited to dusty environment, and does not cause dust deposition through long-term operation. It can be widely used in coal mines for point wind speed continuous online testing.

Sand and gravel resources of the southern coastal region of British Columbia may be linked to various episodes of Wisconsin glaciation. During Wisconsin and probably earlier times, the Fraser Lowland and coastal areas were subjected to repeated glaciations separated by non-glacial intervals. Each major glaciation was accompanied by isostatic and eustatic changes in sea level up to 200 m or more. As a result, the Lowland was covered by the sea during much of Quaternary time. Because the Fraser Lowland is surrounded on two sides by high mountain ranges, glaciers terminated in the sea during their maximum advance. Therefore, meltwaters released during deglaciation, together wit h retreating glacier ice, could produce widespread and extensive sand and gravel deposits both along the coast and throughout the Fraser Lowland and adjacent areas.

"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

The two underground mines are compared, showing the variance in conditions already experienced. Programs currently in operation to improve standards and production are: the training of miners, maintenance men and officials; experiments in floor consolidation and continuing roof support trials; and the effect of comparative stability of working crews on the performance of the operation."

Introduction Pneumatic jackleg rock drills are commonly used in underground mining operations. These tools are known to expose their operators to hand-arm vibration levels in the order of 20-35 m/s2 weighted (Wh). Thus, the majority of the workers who have cumulated several years of jackleg rock drill operation are affected by related health problems such as Raynaud's syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome. Up to now, no efficient personal safety device was available to protect pneumatic rock drill operators against hand-arm vibration (HAV). To address this problem, an anti-vibration handle prototype for jackleg drills has been developed in a previous study. Then, a multi-partner project was launched to refine the prototype and commercialize an effective anti-vibration handle for pneumatic rock drills.

Oxidation and reduction reactions of N-containing molecules have been studied over different types of gold-based catalysts, Au/MOx/Al2O3 and Au/MIOx/MIIOx/Al2O3 (M, MI, MII=Li, Rb, Mg, Ce, Zr, Mn, Cu) prepared by deposition precipitation with urea. In general, all the catalysts were already active at low temperatures. NH3 oxidation was effectively catalyzed by Au/CuO/Al2O3, a catalyst which also gives the highest yield in N2. NO reduction by H2 performed over gold-based catalysts produced N2O, N2 and NH3 and N2O reduction resulted in the formation of dinitrogen. For all the reactions, large synergistic effects have been obtained by addition of different kind of additives.

Optimized mine planning of the Leeville Gold Mine, Nevada, necessitated the requirement for an average of 2540 tpd of high quality cemented rockfill (CRF) in primary stoping blocks and underhand cut and fill workings. To meet this requirement, a number of innovative design features were incorporated into the overall batching plant design. Foremost is the use of a dedicated skip to transfer crushed aggregate from surface down through the ventilation shaft to twin underground storage silos. Also, the use of a high shear colloidal mixer on surface to pre-slurry a cement/flyash binder with pipeline delivery to one of two separate underground CRF mixing stations was incorporated. Finally, the binder and aggregate are combined in a 9 m3 twin shaft compulsory type mixer before loading into teleram trucks for placement.

"The Malartic gold camp includes the Malartic Gold Fields, Barnat, East-Malartic, Canadian Malartic and Sladen mines. From 1935 to 1984, these mines have yielded 212 403 kg of gold. They occur within a 900 m wide belt of highly sheared, dislocated and faulted volcanic and sedimentary rocks (Piché and part of the Pontiac groups) herein named the Malartic Tectonic Znne (MTZ). The zone trends WNW-ESE and separates two lithotectonic sedimentary domains, the Cadillac to the north and the Pontiac to the south. The sedimentary domains are characterized by their coherent fold generations consisting of open to tight reclined and recumbent F1 folds that have been refolded into series of asymmetric upright F2 folds. A flat-lying schistosity (S1 ) and a vertical pressure-solution cleavage (S2) are ubiquitous throughout. Discrete sets of brittle and brittleductile faults are synchronous and parallel to each of these two fabrics.The MTZ trends N320° in the northwestern sector of the town of Malartie, changing to N2800 at its easternmost extremity. The Malartie and Sladen faults constitute its northern and southern boundaries respectively. These two faults also bound another set of faults oriented N305°. Throughout the MTZ, the faults at N280° and N320° and those at N305° outline a series of anastomosed motifs that constitute the principal structural feature of the Malartic district. Locally, a fourth set of minor faults at N065° combines with the other three prominent sets. All these faults have disrupted the gold-bearing volcanic, sedimentary and intrusive rocks encountered throughout the MTZ.The MTZ comprises numerous lozenge-shaped blocks of komatiites and basalts or greywackes and black shales which are cut by disjointed dikes, sills and small intrusions of felsic and mafic rocks. The latter includes gabbro, diorite, lamprophyre, monzonite and pegmatite. They frequently fill conjugate sets of fractures. In some areas, they are clustered into coalescent intrusions. The present morphology of these intrusive bodies( cube, chocolate-tablet boudin, parallel epiped and cigar) is not representative of their primary forms but the result of late shearing and faulting indicative of a major tectonic event subsequent to their emplacement. The intrusions were injected during a brittle stage of deformation related to the F1 folding but prior to the development of the F2 folds and subsequent tearing and shearing by late brittle and brittle-ductile faults . The ultramafic and mafic rocks are intensely altered to serpentine, tremolite, actinolite, carbonate, biotite, hematite and pyrite according to the nature of their proto/it h. In the vicinity of the MTZ, all lithologies exhibit mineral assemblages indicative of the upper greenschist or lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism.The structural evolution of the MTZ involved superimposed folding, shearing, transposition, mylonitization, brittle and brittle-ductile faulting. Each lenticular motif results from the combined effect of conjugate sets of shear zones that outline lozenge-shaped blocks where strain markers indicate different strain states from cores to margins. Bedding in ultramafic flows and/or sedimentary rocks is either NW-SE or NE-SW within the blocks but, in the vicinity of the Malartie and S laden faults, it has been rotated to become subparallel to the faults.Ore shoots are most commonly associated with altered and deformed bodies of diorite and monzonite, or some mafic and ultramafic schists and, at the Canadian Malartic, Sladen and East Malartic mines, with metasedimentary rocks. The shoots occur in close proximity to the various faults of the MTZ but the gold itself is intimately associated with pyrite, biotite and carbonate in halos bordering fractures crisscrossing the different host rocks. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. The system chosen gives East Kemptville the on-the-bench choice of regular AN/Fa, or a high density, Heavy AN /Fa product called SuperAN· or a water resistant emulsion explosive called MAGNAFRAC· for holes that cannot be dewatered.Emulsion ExplosivesAn emulsion is an intimate mixture of two liquids that do not dissolve in each other. Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.
