Cassiar Mine in northern British Columbia began development in 1952. The deposir is found on rhe west limb of rhe McDame Synclinorium in a Mississippian serpentinite body. The serpenltntte, one of the McDame l ntrusives, imrudes Sylvester Group . rocks, which comprise a Lare Devonian to Early M1ss1ss1pptan eugeosync/inal sequence of argillites, quarrzires and volcanics. The foorwall conracr berween Sylvester Group rocks and rhe serpenrinire is a marked zone of broken and incomperent argillite and graphitic schist. The less marked hang- 111gwall contacr 1s a band of indurated argillite. The JurassicCretaceous emplacemenr of the Cassiar Graniric Barholilh is responsible for mosr of the numerous )aims, faulrs and shear zones found in the serpentinite body. Faulting occurred borh before and after asbestos formation. Asbestos is mined from an open pit ar rhe rate of 4,535 ronnes daily. It passes from the pir along a rramline to the mill, where it is concen/rared into nine direcr milling grades. Packaged fibres travel ro over 40 counrries around rhe world for use in the texrile, cemenr and other industries.

"A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. Cette approche contraintes-ERF (SERF, de l’anglais strain-ERF) est appliquée à un programme d’instrumentation pour la mine Brunswick située près de Bathurst, dans le Nouveau-Brunswick. The most commonly used instrumentation for monitoring rock mass behaviour around open stopes is extensometers. The y-axis of Figure 1 represents how the changing rate of movement, measured using either displacement- or stress-type instruments, can be observed over time. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

"The Matheson area of northeastern Ontario is of great interest for mineral exploration because of its geological similarities with the adjacent Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake gold camps. Exploration in the area, however, is hampered by the presence of an extensive and thick cover of glacial sediments. For this reason, till geochemistry has become an important exploration method. The Ontario Geological Survey&apos;s Black River-Matheson (BRiM) reconnaissance till sampling project, carried out between 1984 and 1988, was designed to aid exploration in the Matheson area by documenting the Quaternary stratigraphy and providing a database of till geochemistry. Till samples were collected by backhoe trenching of surface pits in areas of thin drift (< 5 m) and by sonic overburden drilling in areas of thicker drift. This paper summarizes the results from the shallow till sampling component of the BRiM project.Two hundred and eighty-two surface samples were collected from Matheson Till, the youngest till sheet in the area, which was deposited during the Late Wisconsinan. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (- 250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically. In addition, visible gold grains were recovered by panning the heavy mineral fraction. Five areas that display multi-element anomalies in both till fractions warrant further investigation: (1) western Egan Township, overlying the Bradley Lake Syenite; (2) around and south of the Munro and Croesus mines, in Munro and Guibord townships; (3) central Garrison Township overlying the Garrison Stock; (4) south of Ore Car Lake in northern Thackeray Township; and (5) southeastern Harker Township. In these areas, Matheson Till has a local provenance and the bedrock sources for these anomalies are nearby in the up-ice (north northwest) direction. Due to the fine-grained nature of gold in bedrock deposits in the BRiM area, the small size of most gold grains recovered from till samples (< 50 um) and the variable distribution of gold in the heavy mineral concentrate and fine fractions, the fine fraction in addition to the more commonly used heavy mineral concentrate should be used for gold exploration.Surface till samples have been affected by weathering to a depth of = 3 m. Weathered till is characterized by a very low carbonate content in the matrix fraction, the absence of sulfide grains in the heavy mineral concentrate and higher concentrations of copper, nickel and zinc in the fine fraction than in the heavy mineral concentrate. As a result of the weathered/ oxidized nature of the surface till samples, the fine fraction is a better sampling medium for base metal exploration."

"I. INTRODUCTIONA significant development in flotation over the past few years has been the increasing industrial use of flotation columns, primarily in Canada. The column differs dramatically from conventional mechanical flotation machines, both in design end operating philosophy, which has been a principal reason for its slow acceptance by the mineral industry. Boutin, Tremblay and Wheeler (1. 2) developed the concept in the early 1960's and since then plant and laboratory columns have been marketed commercially by Column Flotation Company of Canada Ltd. In 1980-81 at Mines Gaspe, Quebec, three columns replaced 13 conventional cleaners in a molybdenum upgrading circuit, with superior results (3). Since then many of the copper producers in British Columbia have installed columns for copper and molybdenum cleaning, including Gibraltar, Lornex, Highmont and Island Copper. There now appears to be widespread interest in flotation columns.The column is particularly attractive for applications involving multiple cleaning stages and can upgrade In a single stage compared with several stages of mechanical cells. This results in simpler, more controllable circuits. Importantly, the column itself is well suited to computer control. A significant problem, however, has been that of translating laboratory data to plant performance. The purposes of this communication are to address the problem of column scale-up and to describe some of the transport mechanisms of a flotation column, leading to a kinetics based model.A schematic of a flotation column is shown in Figure]. Industrial columns are up to 13 m high and 0.3 to 1.8 m in cross section (either square or circular). Three zones can be identified:a collection zone, with feed entering 2 to 3 m below the top of the column and descending against rising bubbles generated at a gas sparger; a washing zone, where a packed bubble bed is generated by a downward flow of wash water; and a conventional froth (2 - 5 cm thick), the sole purpose of which is particle transport to the launder. The tailings withdrawal at the bottom of the column is controlled at a rate slightly greater than the feed flowrate (called a positive bias).An important element is the washwater, added just below the froth zone. The component of the washwater that flows downward (to make up the bias) is sufficient to prevent coalescence of rising gas bubbles. The packed bubble beg so generated is very efficient at suppressing gangue entrainment to the concentrate."

Ombrotrophic Sphagnum peat bogs have a characteristic signature on both colour injrared film (750 nm to 3,000 nm response) and Daedalus injrared line-scanner images (thermal infrared 3 to 5 microns and 8 to 14 microns response). This remote sensing method was used to survey bogs in southeast Manitoba to delineate targets for surface exploration. Target bogs all have a surface growth of Sphagnum; underlying dead Sphagnum ranges from 1 to 6 m thick. Large Sphagnum reserves exist in the Caribou cluster of bogs, and in /979 a bog first identified by infrared sensing was brought into production.

The corrosion behaviour of Al-B4C metal matrix composites immersed in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03, 0.5 M K2SO4, and 3.5% NaC1 solutions was investigated. Effects of B4C particle volume fraction on the corrosion behaviour of composites were studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the surface morphology of the material before and after corrosion. Results show that all materials investigated are more corrosion resistant in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03 than in other solutions. No appreciable corrosion was observed in boric acid and sulfate solutions in contrast to an obvious pitting in NaC1 solution for both base alloy and composites. The preferential pitting sites are the interfaces of Al/Fe intermetallics for the base alloy, and the A1/B4C interfaces for the composites. Increasing the volume fraction of B4C particles in the composite decreases its corrosion resistance of Al-B4C composites.

"As mine size and tonnage continues to increase, material handling/processing equipment has also increased in size with 400 MT haul trucks, 2000 KW crushers, 12 M SAG/AG mills, 8.5 M ball mills, 3000 M3 flotation cells and 12.5 MW HPGR’s all with planned designs to increase in size further. Related equipment including vibrating screens have also increased in size with screens seeing feed rates of 3000 MTPH. Open circuit SAG Pre-Crush and closed circuit HPGR flowsheets are becoming more common with large screening requirements. Large multi-slope (banana) or horizontal screens are commonly used for these applications, however as the size of these screens has increased, the number and size of the brute force/overhead exciters has increased but with limitations. An example is a SAG discharge screen that will see surges of material from the SAG mill which overload the screen, reducing the screen stroke or throw causing a large reduction in screen efficiency with excessive fines & moisture in the screen oversize feed to the pebble crushing circuit. This paper will present some actual examples of the use of Two-Mass screens as a solution to these overloading problems and the advantages of Two-Mass screens in other high tonnage applications.Brute Force Drive Compared to Two Mass Drive Vibrating ScreensThe standard single mass screen as depicted by figure 1 is generally recognized in the mining industry. It is characterized by the screen body – labeled as the single mass (Mt) that is supported by isolation springs (Kiso). The stroke needed to process material is obtained by incorporating large eccentric wheels and/or drive boxes (Fb) directly mounted to the screen body via a drive tube."

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. This paper discusses design of sprays systems for dust control around a continuous miner (CM) in about 4.2 m (14 ft.) high mining areas with about 1.0 m to 2.0 m (3-6 ft.) of out-of-seam dilution mining. The challenges included low air volumes and velocity at the end of the line curtain, dust produced from out-of-seam dilution rock being very fine with 50% of the particles less than 10 micron, poor capture of aerosol through scrubber suction inlets, dust escaping through the sides of the loading pan in mining high areas, overloading of dust-laden air in the wet-scrubber, and dust rollback toward workers. The challenges were resolved through CFD modeling of airflows; improved line curtain installation, redesign and varying the spatial locations of spray systems as compared to low mining height areas. Water sprays on CM is the primary engineering control for dust control in coal mining. In 2010, the authors developed several spray system concepts for dust control (Chugh, Patwardhan, Gurley, & Hirschi (2009), Chugh & Gurley (2009), Chugh 2012). These included increased contact time between dust particles and water droplets, improved potential for the dust aerosol to be sucked in through suction inlets, and reduced dust-roll back to the operators and workers. CFD modeling was used to understand airflow patterns around mining areas and to identify spatial locations for sprays to minimize dust exposure of CM operator (CMO), haulage unit operator (HUO), and workers downwind of the operating CM in the last open crosscut (LOXC). Face area ventilation plays a key role in dilution and removal of dust generated by mining operations. High mining heights and large pillar sizes associated with longwall mining reduce the air volume reaching the face area to achieve good dust dilution.

"Abstract -The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec . Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by ? 0.10% Y203, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% Zr02. The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and cale-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and rninor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in cale-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

In general, knowledge of the state of stress within the Antarctic lithosphere remains largely unconstrained due in part to Antarctica?s inaccessibility and because of the paucity of seismic focal mechanism solutions. As such, an important component of the ANDRILL project was to acquire new information on the stress directions and magnitudes within the upper crust. Extensive fracture mapping of the core and oriented ultrasonic televiewer logging were carried out to provide strong constraints on both stress orientations and the faulting regime. The first hydraulic fracturing stress determinations in Antarctica were also carried out to provide complimentary stress magnitudes. These measurements were accomplished using a wire-line transported hydraulic fracturing system consisting, essentially, of two synthetic polymer packers that were inflated to isolate the 1-m long pressurization interval. The tests were conducted at the end of the drilling and logging in a ~130-m section specially drilled below 1000 mbsf (nearly 1500 m from the rig floor) for hydraulic fractures. This zone was drilled primarily through competent, dense, and low permeability diamicts. The core fracture and televiewer logging information was used to site twenty separate measurements. Classic hydraulic fracturing pressurization records with unambiguous breakdown and fracture closure pressures were obtained in about half of the measurements. The remaining tests provided fracture propagation and closure pressures that are consistent with the classic breakdown curves, but they did not include a clear breakdown pressure and are indicative of the reopening of either natural or drilling induced fractures in the wellbore wall. The preliminary analysis of the results are in generally good agreement with the stress directions indicated by the core fracture logging and the stress regime suggested by the character of the drilling induced core fractures.

"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is located on the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin. The uranium mineralization is, for the most part, confined to the Athabasca Group, which is underlain by pre-Helikian metamorphic rocks of the Western Craton.The deposit is characterized by a remarkable train of mineralized glacial erratics which led to the original discovery. The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. Following the reduction in part of these solutions by pre-existing carbonaceous matter and pyrite and/or chemical reaction with pre-existing hematite, deposition continued as a result of decreasing temperature and pressure. Subsequently, minor supergene redistribution of the uranium has taken place."

"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® process in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. After resolving various technical difficulties associated with the process, a current density of 325 A/m2 and electrolytic copper production of 234 000 tons per year were realized in 2018. In recent years, Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery has promoted treatment of recycled materials in addition to copper concentrates. Accordingly, the amount and type of impurities charged to the smelting process have tended to increase. In the electrorefining process, impurities such as nickel and antimony cause anodic passivation and formation of suspended solids, respectively. Although these undesirable phenomena can be avoided by controlling impurity concentrations in the anode and electrolyte to appropriate ranges, this also limits the choice of recycled materials that can be processed by the smelter. To achieve both stable operation of the electrorefining process and flexibility in treatment of recycled materials in the smelting process, Saganoseki Refinery improved the capacity of the impurity recovery processes during 2016 to 2018. This paper describes the expansion of the purification plant to remove and recover nickel and antimony. INTRODUCTION The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® (wax- less permanent cathode method) in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. Since then, the refinery has gradually increased current density, and has been committed to establishing stable operation and high productivity via various improvements related to the electrolyte filtration and additive management systems. Figure 1 shows the trends of current density and current efficiency at the refinery. Although the current efficiency temporarily dropped when the current density was raised to 322 A/m2, it consistently exceeded 97% thereafter. At present, stable operation at 325 A/m2 has been achieved and continues.

Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec. Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. "The Martison Lake phosphate-niobium deposit is composed of unconsolidated residuum containing clay and silt-size particles of phosphate, niobium, iron and clay minerals. This paper deals with the laboratory and pilot plant development of the flowsheet and the reagent scheme to treat the Martison Lake ore. The ore, in addition to the complex gangue composition, contained several phosphate minerals including fluorapatite, francolite and florencite. The detailed laboratory and pilot plant evaluation resulted in the development of an effective flowsheet and reagent scheme for the selective flotation of phosphate minerals using a fatty acid circuit, followed by niobium flotation using amine collectors at acid pH. The developed flowsheet included des liming of ore, magnetic separation, and selective P 2 O 5 -Nb 2Os flotation. The main aspects discussed include characterization of the ore, step by step development of flowsheet and evaluation of dfferent modifiers and collectors for P20s and Nb20s flotation.INTRODUCTIONMartison Lake phosphate-niobium ore deposit, located 75 km north of Hearst, Ontario was discovered in the early 70's and has been the subject of extensive technical-economic evaluation in the late 70's and early 80's.The deposit is covered completely by 30 m to 90 m of glacial overburden and is composed entirely of unconso1idated material called residuum, that lies on top of a precambrian age carbonatite intrusive from which the residuum was derived by weathering and natural leaching in situ. The residuum is and irregularly-shaped horizontal lens, 2 km by 3 km in area, and up to 100 m thick, composed mostly of unconsolidated clay and silt-size particles of phosphate, niobium, iron, mica and clay minerals."

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."
