"Sirius Minerals is a UK based fertilizer development company focused on advancing into operation its polyhalite project in North Yorkshire, England. The operation is known as the Woodsmith Mine which has an estimated 2.7 Billion Tonnes of reserves and is currently in the construction phase. DMC Mining Services was selected to carry out the construction of four shafts for the project, a production shaft of 6.75m diameter to a depth of 1594 m, a ventilation shaft of 6.75 m diameter to a depth of 1565 m, and two additional shafts to support the construction of the material transport system (the MTS and Lockwood Beck intermediate) to 360m in depth for servicing the underground conveyor network for transport of product from the mine site to the costal port facilities located at Teasside. This paper will review the status of the project to date and the innovative approaches that DMC is utilizing to ensure a safe and successful shaft sinking project. INTRODUCTION The Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire is a Sirius Minerals-owned deep potash and polyhalite mine located near to the hamlet of Sneatonthorpe, Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, approximately 75 km east of York. The area of interest is more than 700 km2. The £3.2 billion project is to develop the Woodsmith Mine to extract polyhalite, and a tunnel system to transport it to a materials handling facility and harbour at Teesside. The site is the world's largest and highest-grade deposit of polyhalite and is expected to produce 20 million tonnes of polyhalite, potash and POLY4 per annum, as well as create over 1,000 direct jobs and many more indirectly. It has the potential to generate over £2 billion of annual exports for the UK. As the project will require mining to be undertaken in the North York Moors National Park, many objections were raised about the mine. Sirius Minerals has gone to great lengths to ensure that the project is sensitive to the local landscape, including: mineshaft head frames that will be positioned below ground to reduce their visual impact; surface buildings will be kept to a minimum; and the entire site will be landscaped and screened by existing woodland to blend in with the surrounding area. The project will also abide by strict environmental limits which govern our activity during the construction phase."

Selective leaching of lead from a Pb-Ag-Zn concentrate with hydrogen peroxide in citrate solutions was studied at room temperature. Leaching tests were performed, varying the H2O2 concentration and the solid-liquid ratio, holding the solution pH constant at 7, and the citrate concentration at 1 M. Lead extractions of 100 % were achieved with 4 and 5 times the stoichiometric quantity needed to form elemental sulfur, with only a small amount of metal impurities dissolved (Ag, Zn and Fe). The lead solubility limit at those conditions was found to be ~21 g L-1. X-ray diffraction analyses of the leach residues were free of galena (PbS), while other metal sulfides, such as sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and pyrite (FeS2), were basically unaffected.

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. ABSTRACT: As part of an overall study of properties and processes influencing consolidation of oil sands fine tailings resulting from different extraction processes, self-weight consolidation tests were per-formed. Fourteen 2 m and 1 m high standpipe tests were instrumented to monitor the rate and magnitude of consolidation of seven fine tailings materials. Tests provided valuable information about the variation of consolidation related to differences in fine tailings material properties that result from a change in bitu-men extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic). In addition, the effect of adding a coagulant to caustic fine tailings was measured. Test results are presented and discussed in terms of consolidation rate long-term volume decrease, compressibility, and downward drainage. Non-caustic fine tailings had fasterinitial consolidation, which is important in tailings ponds for reducing storage capacity and returning decant water at a faster rate to the extraction plant. Similar results were obtained for caustic fine tailings with a coagulant addition. However, long-term settlement of the different fine tailings appears to con-verge to a similar value over time because it is then governed by effective stress.

"The CompanyCardinal River Coals is jointly owned by Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidated Coal Company of Canada (Consol). The Luscar mine is operated by Luscar Ltd. and is located 40 km south of Hinton near Cadomin, Alberta (Fig. 1). The plant sits on the old townsite of Luscar, Alberta, which was founded in order to develop the coal in 1912 (Fig. 2). Initially, the coal was mined by Luscar Ltd. for heating and steam generation and used quite heavily by the railways for their steam locomotives. In 1955, the mine was decommissioned as the demand for coal for tl1ese purposes had dropped off. In 1969, the mine was re-established by Cardinal River to provide metallurgical coking coal for its customers in Japan. The coal is mined from the 13m thick Jewel Seam by open pit methods at a 10 to 1 stripping ratio. The run-of-mine coal is then cleaned to meet customer demands.The PlantThe clean coal preparation facilities at Cardinal River were extended in 1980 in order to increase the feed rate from 450 t/h to 800 t/h. The extension is a separate plant which can be operated on its own or in parallel with the old plant. In addition, modifications have been made to the fine coal circuit (hydrocyclones added), the coarse refuse circuit, (refuse bucks replaced by a refuse conveyor which backfills a pit), and the fine refuse circuit (solid bowl refuse centrifuges, refuse classifying cyclones, and hydra-rake thickener no longer utilized) since the plant was built in 1969. The plant production of 3 M t per year with a yield of 78% is achieved by first screening and breaking the run-of-mine material to a top size of 1 ½ in. The feed is then slurried, sized, and processed in three different washing circuits. The washed coal is mechanically dewatered, thermally dried, and then stored in a 14 500 t capacity silo or on a 300 000 t stockpile. The fine refuse is thickened and pumped to the same pit to which the coarse refuse is being conveyed"

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

The exhausted Santa Barbara open pit mine (Tuscany, Italy), owned by the main electric power company in Italy (ENEL S.p.A,) extracted lignite as a fuel for the Santa Barbara thermoelectric power plant. The mining activity led to the excavation of a wide slope (with maximum height of 200 m and a planar extension of about 1300 m x 500 m) in the Shale Limestone Chaotic Complex (SLCC) (Figure 1). Since the beginning of its excavation the slope underwent rotational landslides and diffuse instability phenomena. From a geotechnical point of view the SLCC represents a typical bimrock (block-in-matrix rock) (Medley 1994, Medley 2002, Medley 2007) characterized by a mixture of a highly sheared, scaly-fabric, clayey matrix and calcareous blocks ranging from a few millimetres to tens of metres in size. Since the geometrical properties of blocks (grain-size distribution, shape, orientation and volumetric proportion) have been proved to influence the mechanical behaviour of bimrocks (Lindquist & Goodman 1994, Goodman & Ahlgren 2000, Kim et al. 2004, Sonmez et al. 2006), the aim of the present study is to investigate the geometrical properties of calcareous blocks in order to properly characterize the mechanical behaviour of the SLCC bimrock and to further assess the stability of the slope. Block size-distribution and shape were investigated by means of advanced image analysis techniques of SLCC pictures taken in the field. Geostatistical semivariograms and variographic maps were also used in order to investigate the anisotropy of block spatial distribution. Finally, in-situ large sized sieving tests were carried out to investigate the volumetric block proportion within the clayey matrix.

Measurable improvements in throughput have been documented at Barrick Goldstrike due to increased ore fragmentation through efficient drilling and blasting techniques. A decrease in throughput at the Autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas worked closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of actually improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. A series of tests were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of: 1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots. 2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy. 3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing. Early tests indicated a significant increase in throughput when processing identified harder ore. It is anticipated that the total process throughput (hard and soft ore) will increase by six tph in 2003 due to the improved fragmentation of the hard ore. Barrick Goldstrike?s D2M initiative includes roaster ?hard ore? (BWI >17), as well as autoclave ?hard ore? (BWI >15). Approximately six million tons of D2M material is expected be shot in 2003, a relatively small amount compared to the 150 million tons to be mined. The benefit of additional ounces produced should far outweigh the additional drilling and blasting costs.

"The Matte Separation plant at Inco's Copper Cliff Smelter Complex is described. The continuing implementation of flotation column technology in the flowsheet in various applications is reviewed. Comparative studies on 0.038, 0.10, 1.1 and 1.8 m diameter columns have been carried out. It was demonstrated that consistent metallurgical performance was obtained with both pilot- and plant-scale units. Grade-recovery relationships for plant columns can be predicted with confidence from data obtained from test equipment. The work indicates further areas of the flowsheet in which columns present an attractive alternative to conventional cells. INCO’s MATTE SEPARATION PROCESSNickel concentrate from Inco’s Sudbury area mills has been processed in the Copper Cliff smelter for sixty years. Prior to that, Sudbury ores had been smelted directly. Historically, copper-nickel separation from smelter converter matte was achieved by the classical Orford process. In the mid-1940s Inco developed an improved separation scheme based on mineral processing methods, the Matte Separation Process. A generalized Copper Cliff Smelter Complex flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.Iron sulfide and gangue contained in the nickel concentrate are rejected in the smelting-converting process. The molten product, typically containing 50% Ni, 25% CU and 22% s, is cast at about 1000 ºC, into floor moulds and allowed to slowly cool for four days. During this period nickel sulfide (heazlewoodite, Ni,S,), copper sulfide (chalcocite, cu,S) and a copper-nickel metallic alloy precipitate and form a coarse grain structure that is amenable to separation by physical means. The phase chemistry of this system has been described previously by Sproule et al (1). This matte then becomes the feed to the Matte Separation Process.A simplified block flowsheet of the Matte Separation Process is shown in Figure 2. Matte ingots, typically weighing 20 tonnes each, are broken and crushed in a three stage crushing plant to approximately minus 0.01 m and conveyed to the Matte Separation building. Grinding is carried out in two parallel circuits each consisting of a rod and ball mill in series producing a flotation feed which is 65% minus 44 microns. Typical throughput of each grinding circuit is 650 tonnes/day. The metallic fraction of the feed is recovered by magnetic separation. This product, containing about 66% Ni and 15% CU, is a major component of the feed to the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery."

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. Oxygen could be an oxidizing agent as well, but the concentration of oxygen is very low in the solution. The role of ferric ions is predominate in this oxidation (Babu, Sahu, & Pandey, 2002). "The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

"The Copper Canyon property is located in the Galore Creek area of northwestern British Columbia. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization on the property is notable for its high gold content and close spatial relationship with a distinctive suite of high level syenitic and monzonitic intrusions, and pseudoleucite-bearing volcanic country rocks. The style of alteration and mineralization is similar in many respects to the nearby Galore Creek deposits.The current geological resource of 32.4 million tonnes grading 0.75% Cu, 1.17 g/ t Au and 17.1 g/t Ag is insufficient to support a mining operation, but definition of additional reserves combined with improved transportation infrastructure in the region may change this in the future. The climate, topography and proximity to an active glacier indicate that the most likely production scenario is an underground bulk mining operation, with the ore being milled offsite.IntroductionThe property is located at 57°07' North latitude, 131 °21' West longitude, on NTS sheet 104G/ 3W, approximately 160 km northwest of Stewart and 90 km south of Telegraph Creek (Fig. 1). The Galore Creek camp and airstrip are located 6 km to the west. Current access to the property is via helicopter either from Galore Creek, or from the Bronson Creek airstrip 32 km to the south-southeast.The deposit occurs within the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, on the north side of the east fork of Galore Creek, which flows northerly into the Scud River and thence westerly to the Stikine River.Topography is rugged. In the deposit area, elevations range from 1130 m to 1750 m. Valley glaciers and permanent snow and ice fields are characteristic of the region at these elevations, and at its southern limit, mineralization is truncated by the East Fork Glacier.The property is entirely above the treeline, and except for areas of moraine cover and talus slopes, outcrop is abundant."

The Ag2O-mediated reactions of cycloaurated compounds with a general formula Au(L)Cl2 (L = bi-dentate C?N ligand) with thiosalicylic acid, N-acetyl cysteine or 1,2-benzenedithiol in DMF proceeds via ligand substitution of the Au?Cl bonds to afford the S-O and S?S adducts all in good yields. The reactivity of the dichloro, S-O and S-S adducts towards thiols were examined by reacting with cysteine in an aqueous medium, revealing that all of Au-Cl, Au-O and Au-N are labile for thiol displacement. The measurement of the inhibitive activities of these compounds against human cathepsins B and K showed that the dichloro and S-O adducts are effective inhibitors with IC50 values ranging from 0.1 to 2.6 -M, and that the S-S adducts are inactive.

The carbonation reaction of steelmaking slag has been known for many years. However, the size of blocks manufactured from this by-product material has been limited due to the difficulty of achieving a uniform reaction throughout the block. Using newly developed conditions, large porous slag blocks (1.0 x 1.0 x 0.5 m) were produced by car¬bonation of steelmaking slag with the optimum amount of water and supplying CO2 deep into slag powder compacted in molds. The development of these blocks has great poten-tial to solve the problem of slag utilization, for example, by recycling slag in large car¬bonated blocks for artificial fish reefs and seaweed cultivation beds. This paper de¬scribes the carbonation reaction, the new process for producing large slag blocks, and the utilization of blocks in past and recent years.

The microstructures and grain sizes of nanocrystalline Co and Co-1.1 wt % P alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The corrosion properties of as-deposited and annealed Co-l.l wt % P alloys and pure nanocrystalline Co were studied in a deaerated 0.1M H2SO4 solution using electrochemical measurements and XPS surface analysis. Potentiodynamic polarization testing and impedance measurements revealed that an addition of P to pure nanocrystalline Co improved the anodic-corrosion resistance, however, this enhanced corrosion resistance was compromised by the heat treatment process at 350 and 800°C. The corroded surface of annealed nanocrystalline Co-1.1 wt % P at 350°C exhibited a more porous P-enriched layer compared with the as-deposited case. A sample annealed at 800°C corroded uniformly showing second-phase precipitates. The enhanced corrosion resistance of as-deposited nanocrystalline Co-1.1 wt % P was attributed to the elemental P on the surface that acted to hinder the anodic dissolution kinetics of surface Co following an initial selective dissolution of Co. However, at a higher anodic overpotential region, the superior corrosion resistance of Co-l.l wt% P alloys did not last because of the formation of a non-protective surface film consisting of mainly hypophosphite and phosphate as well as elemental P.

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . "Abstract-The ""Brunswick Horizon"" an informally named ore-bearing unit near the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation in the Ordovician Tetagouche Group, hosts the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 base-metal mines, as well as the former Austin Brook iron mine, in northern New Brunswick. Detailed structural analysis of the No. 6 and No.12 mines led to the prediction that a massive­ sulfide deposit may have been repeated by F1 folding along the Brunswick Horizon. A subsequent drilling program discovered the new massive-sulfide North End Zone at a vertical depth of 1100 m, 1 km north of the No. 12 underground workings. By the end of 1990, Zn-Pb-rich massive sulfides had been delineated over a strike length of 200 m and a down-dip extent of 170 m. Rock units intersected in the North End Zone are generally thinner and vary somewhat from those at the Brunswick No. 12 mine. Thinning of the hanging wall rocks may be primary, may result from attenuation along F2 folds, or may represent truncation by a thrust fault. The newly discovered sulfide zone indicates that significant potential exists for the discovery of other deposits at previously unexplored depths.SOMMAIRE-Dans le nord-est du Nouveau-Brunswick ""l'horizon Brunswick"" est le nom usuel de la zone qui contient les mines de métaux de base Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12, ainsi que l'ancienne mine de fer Austin Brook, toutes situées sur le dessus de la Formation ""Nepisiguit Falls"" dans le Groupe Tetagouche d'âge Ordovicien. "A novel carbonaceous adsorbent for recovery of nickel from nickel plating waste solution was prepared from rice straw using sulfur impregnation. The rice straws were cut to 1 cm pieces, and then immersed in 0.01 - 3 M K2S solution to prepare sulfur-immersed materials. The immersed-materials were heated at 100-700 ºC in nitrogen gas to produce the sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent by pyrolysis. The contents of carbon and sulfur in the adsorbent and abilities of adsorbent to recovery nickel from aqueous solution were examined. The contents of carbon and sulfur in sulfur-immersed materials are almost same as those in raw material. In pyrolysis, with increasing the heating temperature to 200 ºC, the contents of carbon and sulfur are almost constant, and then above 300 ºC those increase. The recovery for nickel using raw material, sulfur-immersed material and the product pyrolyzed at 100 - 200 ºC are almost same, and with increasing the heating temperature to 400 ºC, that of the product increases, and above 500 ºC that of the product decreases. In immerse step, with increasing K2S concentration, the carbon content of the product at 400 ºC gradually decreases, the sulfur content of the product increases, and the recovery for nickel using the product gradually increases and then above 1 M K2S decrease. The product prepared from material immersed in 1 M K2S solution at 400 ºC indicates a maximum recovery for nickel ion. The product can adsorb nickel ion in nickel plating waste solution coexisting with phosphate ion, and adsorbed nickel ion in the product was deposited as nickel metal after heating at 1000 ºC under N2 atmosphere.INTRODUCTIONRice is the second world’s largest cereal crop after wheat, but produces large amount of straw residues, of about 330 million metric tonnes. Rice is a widely grown crop in Asia, and rice straw is produced as a by-product of rice production. In most parts of rice fields, open-field burning of rice straw is commonly practiced in the region when there is limited time to prepare a field for the next crop. However, open-field burning of crop residues is an uncontrolled combustion process during which air pollutants are emitted into atmosphere. These air pollutants have significant toxicological properties and are potential carcinogens (Gadede et al., 2009). Although wildfires are prohibited in cultivation fields of most countries, farmers usually keep on burning their crop by-products. Biomass burning is an important source of aerosol particles which may affect local and regional air quality (Gao et al., 2011), and also contribute to global climate changes."

We could enlarge or reduce it depending on the current in-put.D. Doyle Then chemically bound material we might not see. If you are restricted to 1 micron then you would not be able to separate things smaller than this. Is this not so?Reply We won't be able to analyse it but we will see it as the scanning electron microscope has a resolution down to about 0.1 microns. We should be able to get the general composition of such a grain plus its surrounding grains. We feel we can then make a reasonable estimate if it were as small as 0.1 microns. An accurate analysis would be achieved with grains of 3 and 4 microns.D. Doyle Would this have an application in the hydrocarbon field?Reply The lowest atomic number would be sodium. The wave-length spectometer is about 10 times as sensitive and would scan the section much faster. A one inch diameter polished section would be scanned in about 7 hours for anything 1 micron or larger."
