Introduction Within the past year a new deposit of gypsum has been opened up and brought into production in the Province of Manitoba. Until 1930, Manitoba's entire production came from Gypsumville, northwest of Winnipeg, at mile 161 on the Gypsumville branch of the Canadian National railway. However, during 1930 a gypsum bed was opened up at a point one mile south of the village of Amaranth, forty miles north of Portage la Paririe, on the west side of lake Manitoba (See Figure 1). Although no exposure has yet been discovered, the presence of gypsum below the surface in that district has been known for many years as the result of drilling for water. In 1929, J. R. Spear (1), of Winnipeg, interested some local capital in the possibility of .finding commercial deposits of gypsum, and, after some exploration work in the area with a well drill, the Amaranth deposit was located. Sixteen holes were put down at intervals of 400 or 500 feet, all of which encountered what appeared to be a continuous bed of gypsum, about thirty-eight feet thick, at a depth of 92 feet. The extent of the deposit has not yet been determined.

A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. Introduction The Outokumpu copper mine is situated in eastern Finland, 50 kilometers west of the city of Joensuu or 225 kilometers directly north of the city of Viborg (Viipuri), which is situated at the eastern end of the gulf of Finland (Figure 1). The ore-body was discovered in 1910 by Dr. Otto Trüstedt after two years of careful, scientifically-directed, search. During the early period of development of the mine, the ore was treated locally and the copper re-covered by an electrolytic process. Now the ore is concentrated by tables and by flotation. The concentrates are shipped to Germany for refining. In 1929 the mine produced 150,000 tons of ore from which between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of flotation concentrates containing 20 per cent copper were produced. Profits in 1929 were approximately half a million dollars, but the present price of copper will affect very seriously the profits for 1930. The ore reserves are given as between 7 and 8 million tons (1). The grade of ore is stated to be 4 percent to 6 percent copper, with a little zinc.

NIOCALITE is a new mineral species which has been identified in rock from the Oka district, Quebec. It occurs as prismatic crystals up to l 0 mm. in length and I mm. in width, in coarse, white, crystalline calcite with associated apatite, diopside, biotite, pyrochlore, and niobian perovskite. The crystals of niocalite are light yellow in col-our and have a vitreous lustre. The optical properties of niocalite (I) are as follows: Biaxial negative -2V = 56° a = 1.700, [ ] = 1.730 Birefringence y -a = 0.030 Optic orientation: X = b, Z/\c 12°, Y , /\a = 32° The specific gravity is 3.32 and the hardness is approximately 6 (Mohs scale). A detailed analysis performed on 2.4 gm. of hand-picked material reveals that niocalite is essentially a calcium niobium silicate. Table I gives the result of the analysis. Crystals of niocalite, apparently suitable for X-ray diffraction work, were selected, and single crystal photographs were obtained using both Weissenberg and Precession cameras. Initial difficulties were encountered in interpreting these films, and in correlating the crystal data with the optical data. The in-consistencies were explained by the fact that every grain examined was twinned to some extent.

Metallurgical plants are typically large, complex facilities. Their design is a multidisciplinary activity with a wide range of inputs, based on: the business case; metallurgical and process requirements; and the main processing equipment selection. Many constraints limit what can be achieved. Appropriate phasing of the design and development, and clear go/no-go decision criteria, are critical to successful implementation of a plant design project. Risk management concepts are used as a framework for successful project development, working from the business case, through project development, to implementation and startup, paying constant attention to technology, safe design, and sustainability. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The subject of “Metallurgical Plant Design” is the design of metallurgical plant facilities in the broadest sense. Plant design represents the culmination of many multidisciplinary activities: knowledge of process metallurgy is applied to design facilities to manufacture useful, economical, metal-based products. In the field of metallurgy, plant design is often overlooked, and its unique requirements are commonly not well understood, let alone appreciated. This book is a contribution to remedying this situation. The focus is the specifics of the metals industries, because an extensive literature already exists on the general topic of plant design.

Introduction An investigation of the bituminous sands of Alberta was begun by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, in 1913. This investigation was interrupted during the period 1916-19, but was resumed in 1920. Work completed in October 1924 has included detailed topographical surveys of extensive areas, examination and sampling of principal outcrops, the mining of trial shipments, laying of demonstration pavements, and a study of methods adapted to the recovery of hydrocarbons from the crude bituminous sand. Bituminous sand consists, for the most part, of clear quartz grains, cemented together by petroleum residuum or bitumen. In form the quartz grains are most irregular, varying from sharply angular to smooth, waterworn shapes. The bitumen has a specific gravity of 1.018 and has a penetration of 9.00 mm. (77° F. 100 grams 1 sec.). The percentage of bitumen associated with the sand varies from 5 to 25 per cent. A large tonnage is available in which the percentage of bitqmen is 15 per cent or over. Production Up to the present time, production has been restricted to requirements for experimental .and demonstration work. The total quantity shipped for such purposes has not exceeded 750 tons.

Thin spray-on liners are increasingly being used as rock support in underground mines. The adhesive strength between the liner and the rock surface is an important design parameter. Adhesion tests were conducted to assess the impact on adhesion of the presence of oil, water, and dust on a substrate, and the roughness and grain size of different substrates. Other factors such as curing time, loading rate, and liner thickness were also considered. Adhesion was measured using a pull test of a 33 mm diameter elevator bolt attached to an over-cored section of liner with strong epoxy. Most tests were performed using Tekflex liner material, although five other liner products were also tested. Adhesive strengths of about 2 MPa can be achieved with Tekflex under optimal conditions. Long-term creep tests showed that the adhesive strength could drop by at least 50% when the liner carries load for about a month. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa. As the thickness of the liner increases, the adhesive strength to a substrate appears to decrease.

There are many of us who desire lo sell Canadian crude oil in this market. Further, and what is really important, there are many of us who desire to buy Canadian crude oil for this market. It is fundamental that for crude oil to be sold in the world market, it must ?be sold at competitive prices. At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

"The mill at Mattagami Lake Mines treats 3,850 tons per day. The mill feed is a heavy sulphide ore. It is composed ofPyrite & Pyrrhotite - 40%Marmatite - 17%Chalcopyrite - 2%Magnetite - 10%Talc and other Silicates - 31%The sulphides are intimately associated with each other and often finely disseminated throughout the siliceous gangue. An abundance of middling particles exist in the circuit and a delicate balance has to be maintained between concentrate grades and metal recoveries.The metal content of the mill feed fluctuates between 0.4 to 0.7% for copper and 6 to 13% for zinc.The flow sheet of the concentrator is shown in Figure 1.Eight sample streams have been selected for on-stream analysis, namely1. The synergistic effects of polymer additives such as gelatin and polyethylene glycol) (PEG) and Cl- on Cu electrodeposition have been investigated by measuring the polarization curves for Cu deposition, by rotating ring-disk electrode technique and by AC impedance measurements. The cathode potential for Cu deposition was greatly polarized in solutions containing both Cl- and gelatin or PEG, showing evident synergistic effect of polymer additives and Cl- on Cu deposition. The cathode potential was shifted to the less noble direction with increasing the concentration of Cl- in solutions containing polymer additives and showed the maximum polarization at Cl- concentration range between 0.1 and 1 mmol/L. The rotating ring-disk electrode technique revealed that Cu deposition in solutions containing small amounts of Cl- proceeded with initial formation of adsorbed intermediate CuClad. The Cole-Cole plots obtained by AC impedance techniques suggest that the reduction of CuClad is suppressed by polymer additives. The morphology of Cu deposited from solutions containing both PEG and Cl- showed the compacted surface composed of smaller grains due to an increase in the overpotential for Cu deposition.

Granduc Tunnel hit 35.1 metres (115 ft.) on their best day, 12 km from the portal, single heading forty-three years ago. "In the present study, electrochemical measurements, especially cathodic potentiodynamic polarization (CPC) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), have been employed to study the kinetics of ferric reduction on chalcopyrite in aqueous Fe(II)Fe( III)H2SO4 solution at 90 °C and 110 °C. Results from the calculation of speciation in the above solution reveal that, at both 90 °C and 110 °C, the real Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is much lower than the nominal ratio, which leads to smaller VALUES (for the reversible potential of the ferric/ferrous couple. Exchange current densities of the ferric/ferrous couple were obtained and are on the order of 106 10 5 A/cm2 a t 9 0 °C and 1 07 10 6 A/cm2 at 110 °C, respectively. The Tafel slopes from the CPP method are higher than those from the CPC method at both 90 °C and 110 °C. The transfer coefficients were about 0.360.59 at 90 °C and 0.370.65 at 110 °C. Based on the exchange current densities obtained, the rate constant kc was calculated. It was found that kc at 90 °C was slightly larger than at 110 °C, especially for the results obtained by the CPC method. The average rate constants are 862.17 cm/s for CPC and 65.30 cm/s for CPP at 90 °C, and 477.69 cm/s for CPC and 63.53 cm/s for CPP at 110 °C for nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1000:1. INTRODUCTIONChalcopyrite is one of the most abundant copper-bearing minerals, accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s known copper reserves (Wang, 2005). Most of the currently proposed leaching processes are based on sulfuric acid with ferric ions and/or dissolved oxygen as oxidants. Some of these processes have been piloted in attempts to implement these technologies on an industrial scale, such as Activox (U.S. 5,232,491, 1993), Nenatech (U.S. 5,993,635, 1999), Dynatec (U.S. 5,730,776, 1998), AAC/UBC (U.S. 6,503,293, 2003), Total Pressure Oxidation (U.S. 5,698,170, 1997), CESL (U.S. 5,874,055, 1999) and Galvanox (U.S. 7,846,233, 2010).To date, much effort has been devoted to understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidative processes (Biegler & Horne, 1985; Córdoba, Muñoz, Blázquez, González, & Ballester, 2008, 2009; Ghahremaninezhad, Asselin, & Dixon, 2010; Hirato, Majima, & Awakura, 1987; Hiroyoshi, Kuroiwa, Miki, Tsunekawa, & Hirajima, 2004; Warren, Wadsworth, & El-raghy, 1982) or the cathode reduction reactions of chalcopyrite itself (Arce & González, 2002; Biegler & Swift, 1976; Biegler, 1977; Nava, González, Leinen, & Ramos-Barrado, 2008), by chemical or electrochemical methods. However, as the most important cathodic processes in chalcopyrite leaching systems, the cathodic reductions of ferric ions or dissolved oxygen are worth measuring due to their effects on the overall leaching rate, as predicted by mixed potential theory."
