Cathode stripping machine technology has been developed significantly both in electrorefining (ER) and electrowinning (EW) applications in the last ten years. The main driver has been robotic cathode handling, which has enabled increased flexibility to meet different layout and material handling requirements for both ER and EW processes. Additionally, cathode stripping stations have been continuously developed to optimize speed and to reduce mechanical stress of permanent cathodes. 'taco' type cathodes have been proven as beneficial approach for high capacity operations (particularly in Cu ER), where over 600 cathodes per hour continuous throughput has been achieved. However, the latest developments also apply to split type cathode stripping. Besides material handling, the modern cathode stripping machine has also an important role to provide information for production and quality monitoring. This paper describes the latest developments from the field of copper cathode stripping based on several different projects implemented in the recent years. INTRODUCTION After introduction of the permanent cathode technology in the late 1970s, it became the prevailing technology in copper refineries over the traditional starting sheet process by the end of 1980s. The main driver was less labour-intensive production due to fewer processing steps required along with more automated electrode handling equipment (cathode stripping machine, anode preparation machine, anode scrap washing machine and tankhouse cranes). Since then the design of the cathode stripping machine has followed the development of permanent cathode technology. The main development steps so far can be summarized as follows: Full Deposit Stripping Machine (FDSM) based on waxed permanent cathodes or cathodes with bottom edge strips resulting in split cathodes (copper sheets separated, see Figure 1) Wax less cathode stripping based on V-groove on bottom of the edge strip resulting in either ‘taco’ cathodes (enveloped copper sheets, see Figure 1) or split cathodes Full Deposit Robotic Stripping Machines (FDRSM) using 1–5 robots for permanent cathode handling and cathode stacking.

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. Hydraulic Pump - fixed or variable positive displacement type such as a piston or vane p.mp which displaces a constant amount of fluid for ead1 revolution - this unit converts mechanical energy of the prime mover into fluid energy.3. Oil Reservoir - a standard tank to operate under atmospheric pressure which has a capacity of 2 - 3 times the maximum gpm outp.it of the hydraulic pump."

"Laboratory investigations on two complex ores, the A1 zone ore from Les Mines Selbaie and the Lyon Lake ore from Mattabi Mines Ltd. (Division of Noranda Minerals), have been carried out to determine some of the main variables in collectorless flotation. In particular, the effect of pulp potential (controlled by gas composition), conditioning time, pH and grinding media have been studied.Chalcopyrite showed the greatest response to collectorless flotation among the four major sulphide minerals present, followed by galena. Flotation of sphalerite was variable from minimal to important depending on the mineralogy and the pre-treatment performed. Appreciable silver recovery was achieved collectorlessly for the Lyon Lake ore while it could not be achieved for the A1 zone ore of Les Mines Selbaie. It appears that the difference between the two ores is related to silver's predominance as tetrahydrite in the Lyon Lake ore while it is as argentite and native silver in the A1 zone ore.The response of the ores to collectorless flotation is strongly dependent on the pulp potential, Ep, and pH. Using different gas compositions and different conditioning times it was found that collectorless flotation occurs when Ep is +195 to +295 mv (vs SHE). The actual on-set potential for collectorless flotation is dependent on the ore. A too high potential or prolonged oxidation leads to a decrease in selectivity. Some other factors were examined, notably the effect of pH and the type of grinding media on the selectivity achieved in the laboratory.Preliminary results from a plant trial at Mattabi Mines Ltd. confirmed that collectorless flotation occurs and that it is preferential for chalcopyrite and to a lesser extent galena. Collectorless flotation was not attempted at Les Mines Selbaie. However, examination of the distribution of collector between the different addition points in the copper circuit suggests that it may be present."

"Campbell Mine which has been in continuous operation since 1949 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past 3 years. This paper describes the process changes which have occurred at the Campbell Mill since 1991. The paper discusses the engineering, construction and startup of the effluent treatment circuit, the new oxide filtering and merrill-crowe precipitation circuit, and the changes to the pressure oxidation circuit. Particular attention is paid to startup problems and solutions to these problems. A review of the benefits and results of these process changes is also discussed. Future changes are also briefly reviewed with anticipated goals and expectations.IntroductionCampbell Mine is a gold mine 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada. It is located in Balmertown, Ontario which is located 300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Campbell Mine has been in continuous operation since 1949, producing nearly 8,000,000 ounces. In 1993 Campbell Mine is budgeted to produce 289, 750 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $157 US/ounce. Daily mill tonnage is budgeted for 1,430 tons/day but has milled as high as 1,600 tons/day on a consistent basis. Recovery in 1993 is 93.4% and is budgeted to average 94.5% in 1994.In the 1992 edition of the proceedings of the Canadian Mineral Processors conference I described the changes that were made at Campbell starting in 1989. This paper continues where the 1992 paper ended and discusses the changes to the Campbell mill since that lime. The changes to Campbell since January 1992 have been numerous with capital expenditure in the mill exceeding $14.1 million. This paper describes three primary projects since that lime: the effluent treatment project ($5.5 million), the oxide leach/filtering and merrill-crowe project ($4.6 million) and the pretreatment project ($2.81 million). The focus of this paper is to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, and some of the initial operational problems and solutions applied to those problems."

"The New Britannia Minesite is located in Snow Lake, Manitoba, 420 miles north of Winnipeg (figure 1). The mine previously operated from 1949 to 1958 extracting some 5.39 million tons of ore at a 0.150 opt gold grade. From 1959 to 1986 the property was held by Nor-Acme and Hudson Bay Exploration and Development and in 1987 High River Resources Ltd. Optioned the property, dewatered the mine and conducted a diamond drill program between the 1 780 and 2400 levels. In 1988 two companies, Nor-Acme Mines Ltd. and High River Gold Mines Ltd., negotiated an option agreement with INCO Gold whereby !NCO assumed management control of all site exploration work. During this period, a bulk sample of 10,000 tons was extracted from the 1780 level with no further exploration recorded after its removal. Both Hudson Bay Exploration and Development and INCO Gold conducted feasibility studies on reactivating the property but at a calculated capital cost of Cdn $70 to $80 million found the rate of return on their investment unacceptable.In 1991 !NCO Gold merged its interest with the assets of TVX Gold Inc. and in February 1994 TVX Gold Inc. and High River Gold Mines Ltd. entered into a joint venture partnership to develop the Snow Lake property, naming TVX Gold Inc. the operator. Upon completion of a feasibility study in April 1994 by Bharti Engineering Associates Inc., a decision was made to reopen the Britannia Mine at an established project cost of US $33 million.Project construction commenced in July 1994 with the hoist house excavation. The first concrete for the hoist house level footings was poured on August 4, 1994 and the project was completed on October 1, 1995 at a cost of US $36 million. The first gold pour took place November 4, 1995.This paper not only presents the metallurgical aspects of the operation but also describes the novel approach used to complete the design and construction of the site facilities."

"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. SUMMARYAmerican Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the Goldstrike property in northeastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. Additionally, the Purple Vein deposit, one mile north of the Mine, is expected to add at least 4 million ounces of reserves by year end 1991.The Goldstrike ore body contains both oxide and sulphide ore. "Abstract - The Kori Kollo gold deposit is hosted by a c.15 Ma sericitized dacite stock in the La Joya district on the Bolivian Altiplano. The mineralization is of the Bolivian polymetallic vein (BPV) type, with a significant amount of the gold reserves contained in the oxide cap. Field and microscopic studies, K-Ar dating, ??34S values of pyrite, alunite and jarosite, and ??18O values of alunite and jarosite demonstrate that some of this gold is supergene. Two types of supergene gold are present: minute gold grains, 1 to 10 microns across, of high fineness and associated with jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides; and ‘invisible’ gold, which is probably sorbed onto minerals such as jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides.Pyrite ??34S values fall in the limited range -3.5 ± 0.6‰, consistent with a magmatic origin. Sulfate ??34S values are homogeneous and overlap closely with those of pyrite (-1.2 ± 2.1‰), which supports petrographic evidence that sulfates replaced pyrite. By contrast, sulfate ??18O values are inhomogeneous with a large range (alunite +2 to 26‰, jarosite -5 to +18‰). These data are interpreted as reflecting kinetically controlled reactions involving various proportions of atmospheric oxygen and local meteoric water. This is typical of supergene alteration and is due to the seasonally dry climate of the Altiplano.The oxide-zone mineralogy is dominated by sulfates and iron oxy-hydroxide minerals with some phosphates and halides, which indicates that the groundwaters were acidic, oxidizing and relatively saline. Under these conditions the most likely complexes responsible for gold mobilization are halides.Geological data and K-Ar ages indicate that oxidation of the BPV deposits began at least around 11 Ma and possibly up to 15 Ma ago, and that supergene alteration lasted until around 4 Ma. Abstract-Brunswick No. 12 is a vent-proximal massive sulfide deposit that formed above a feeder pipe with associated hydrothermal alteration. Because of the replacement of bedded sulfides deposited above the hydrothermal vent, individual sulfide lenses show the following vertical and lateral zoning outward from the vent complex: massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite core - interlayered pyrite-sphalerite-galena (Pb-Zn ore zone) - bedded pyrite. The feeder zone which underlies the Cu-rich core consists of an anastomosing network of pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite­ quartz veins with variable and generally minor contents of ferroan carbonate, Fe-rich chlorite, sphalerite, galena and arsenopyrite. Hydrothermal alteration of felsic igneous rocks hosting and adjacent to the feeder pipe is represented by an inner zone (zone 1) characterized by sulfide stringers, Fe-rich chlorite, muscovite, quartz, and ferroan carbonate that formed at the expense of feldspars and what was probably glass; outer zones (Il and III) are represented by Mg-rich chlorite and muscovite formation, and the albitization and silicification of K-feldspar. Accompanying these alteration trends is a marked decrease of Na + Ca, and an increase in Fe + Mg + C03 in zone 1, and increases in Mg + Na in the outer zones. The classic zoning of metals within the sulfide lenses, the formation of a feeder pipe below the vent-proximal sulfide core, and the hydrothermal alteration of felsic volcanic rocks cut by the feeder pipe all support a vent-proximal origin for the Brunswick No. 12 deposit. Furthermore, restriction of sulfide stringer mineralization to the footwall sequence, the folding of the stringer zone by an F1 fold, and the difficulty of long distance mass transfer of metals from the sulfides into the host rocks all argue against a tectonic origin for the stringer zone. All of the evidence indicates that the feeder pipe formed during the ore forming hydrothermal event, but has been distorted and in some areas detached from the overlying massive sulfides during subsequent deformation.

"In general, there is a strong correlation between dislocation characteristics and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. In this study, dislocation characteristics of tensile deformed Al-Mg alloys were examined by transmission electron microscopy. An Increase in the solute concentration, ranging between 0.3 and 1.1%, Mg leads to increase in strength and decrease in uniform elongation. The accumulation of dislocations during the tensile deformation is observed in lower strain as the concentration of solute Mg in the alloy is higher. It is believed that the solute Mg in Al-Mg alloy promotes the accumulation of dislocation during the tensile deformation resulting in the decrease in elongation.INTRODUCTION The influences of the amount of Mg concentration on the tensile properties of Al-Mg alloys has been investigated by many researchers. It has been understood that the tensile ductility of Al-Mg alloy is higher for the Al-Mg alloys with higher Mg concentration beyond 2 mass% (Mukai, Higashi, Hirano & Tanimura, 1993). Uchida and Yoshida (1995) reported the formation of microbands during the tensile deformation due to the localization of dislocations, and the amount of microbands were reduced when the Mg concentration of the Al-Mg alloy was increased from 3 to 9 mass%. Their study suggested that the dynamic recovery of dislocation was retarded due to the increase of the Mg concentration during the tensile deformation, which resulted the increase in ductility. On the other hand, in the case of Al-Mg alloys with the Mg concentration less than 3 mass%, the reason why the ductility of Al-Mg alloys decreases with increasing Mg concentration has not been sufficiently investigated. In general, the Mg concentration used for automotive usage is less than 1 mass%, in the case of Al-Mg-Si alloys (Aoki, 2013). Therefore, to clarify the roles of Mg in the low concentration range on ductility of aluminum alloys and to elucidate its mechanism contribute to alloy design of Al-Mg-Si alloys having good formability."

BEFORE going into detail on the subject to be presented, a brief outline of the Company's earl y history would not be out of place. Prospecting and mining on a small scale was started in 1876 on the site of the present open pit at Thetford Mines. The property was purchased from the Crown in 1878 and Johnson's Company was incorporated in 1885. It is owned and operated today by descendants of the original shareholders. Many employees, through their fathers and grandfathers, have service records dating back three generations. The principal asbestos deposit at Thetford Mines is pear-shaped, with surface dimensions of about 2,200 feet in length by 1,300 feet in maximum . width. Its long axis strikes northeast and the dip is nearly vertical, but irregular in detail. It is known to extend to a depth 1,200 feet below the original surface, but its area at that depth has not been determined. Ownership of this deposit is divided among three active Companies: the Asbestos Corporation, Limited; Bell Asbestos Mines, Limited; and John-son's Company. Johnson's Company owns a section about 1,000 feet in length and 500 feet in width, bounded on the northeast by the King mine of the Asbestos Corporation and on the northwest by the Bell pit. On Johnson ground, there was originally a large outcrop o~ asbestos rock which dipped toward the south below overburden. This was mined until recently by open pit, the overburden being stripped off as far southward from the original outcrop as was economically possible. As the. pit was deepened, within side walls maintained at a maximum safe slope, its floor area, of course, became progressively smaller, and eventually the pit would have wedged out against the Bell property line. It became necessary, there-fore, to introduce some other method of mining before production became seriously curtailed by a shrinkage of the pit area.

Global practice in hydrometallurgical production of copper cathode by electrowinning is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. Data from 29 plants were collected, representing 38% of world cathode copper production. Similar surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013. This survey includes analysis of historical and current data. Evolving trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices, are analysed and differences in operating practices with location are assessed. Examples of recent technology and operational choices to increase productivity, improve copper quality, and decrease electrical energy consumption are discussed. Significant project expansions, particularly in Africa, and the consolidation of numerous small Chinese operations are also presented. INTRODUCTION Global trends and operating practices in copper electrowinning (EW) in 2018 are reviewed and evaluated. Similar world and African surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Davenport, Jenkins, Robinson, & Karcas, 2001; Robinson, Garbutt, & Davenport, 2002; Robinson, Davenport, Jenkins, King, & Rasmussen, 2003; Robinson, Davenport, Moats, Karcas, & Demetrio, 2007; Robinson, Sole, Sandoval, Moats, Siegmund, & Davenport, 2013). Contributing operations included sites from the USA and Mexico (9), Chile and Peru (6), Laos (1), Kazakhstan (1), and Africa (9). Despite fewer contributions compared with past experience, this survey nevertheless represents 2018 copper EW cathode production of 1.76 Mt, or about 38% of world production of 4.64 Mt (International Copper Study Group, 2017). This drop in permission to contribute is attributed to the more competitive nature of the industry and unprecedented production pressures; furthermore, several operations in Australia have shut down, while large operations that are currently commissioning or ramping up to full production in Africa and Asia declined to participate. Of the Chinese operations, which represent an increasingly important proportion of global electrowon cathode copper, particularly in Africa, only Tenke Fungurume (Democratic Republic of Congo; DRC) participated in this survey.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

"AbstractThe slow progress of conventional geological reconnaissance of the northern Canadian Shield during the past twenty years clearly indicates the need for a radically new field technique. Operation Keewatin, involving the use of helicopters as the traversing vehicles, was planned and executed by the Geological Survey of Canada in response to this requirement.About 57,000 square miles of District of Keewatin, N.W.T., were mapped during the 1952 field season in appropriate detail for publication at 1 inch to 8 miles. The Operation disclosed about 14,100 square miles of Precambrian sedimentary and volcanic rocks ranging in •age from Archaean to Late Proterozoic. About 7,700 square miles of this area are underlain by greenstone. This work was accomplished in a field season of 113 days, including the spring break-up. Routine aerial geological observations were made from two helicopters flying about 300 feet above the ground; these observations were checked by more than 1,700 landings and about an equal number of aerial observations from heights of less than 50 feet. Logistical support was •provided by a Norseman aircraft on skiis or floats. Combined helicopter and Norseman flying time was about 990 hours. More than 1-00 square miles were mapped per helicopter-hour, and about 815 square miles were examined each day that both helicopters operated. "Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

"Modern day ore bodies are becoming increasingly harder, more abrasive and lower grade. The Mako deposit is located in Senegal and consists predominantly of primary mafic and felsic lithology that are both very competent and very abrasive ores (Axb < 30, BWi >20 and Ai >1.0). The deposit was initially discovery in 2010 and the Toro Gold management team fast tracked the Mako Project through development and into production to achieve its first gold pour in January 2018. The comminution circuit comprises primary crushing single stage SAG milling with recycle crusher (1oCR SS-SAC). The mill reached design throughput and grind size seven weeks after first ore. The Mako project marks another successful international application of single stage milling, which represents a simple and easy to operate comminution circuit for small-to-mid size projects with a low capital cost. This paper describes the ore interpretation, comminution modelling, grinding circuit selection and design, as well as an overview of the commissioning and ramp-up of the mill.INTRODUCTION The Mako Gold Project is operated by Toro Gold Ltd., which holds a 90% interest in the project. The project is located in south-eastern Senegal in the Kedougou region, close to the Gambia river and township of Mako. The Mako deposit lies in the “Kenieba Window” of eastern Senegal and western Mali, which hosts a number of gold mining operations and development projects. The Mako Gold Project has an estimated life of 8 years with overall recoverable gold estimated at 924 koz. The process plant is designed to treat 1.8Mt/a of ore and produce 128 – 143 koz of gold per annum. Lycopodium Minerals Pty Ltd (Lycopodium) was appointed to provide feasibility studies and EPCM services for the greenfield project. Forming part of consultancy services provided by Lycopodium, Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC), a subsidiary of Lycopodium, was involved in the design, commissioning, ramp up and ongoing post commissioning support of the comminution circuit."

"The gold recovery of a Mexican cyanidation plant, in Sonora, has been decreasing due to the increasing presence of gold tellurides. This work presents the results of different processes aimed to recover the remaining gold from the cyanidation tailings of the operation. The cyanidation in the mine is performed at 0.1 g/L NaCN and pH = 10.3, adjusted with lime. The treatments studied in the laboratory with these tailings were: cyanidation at higher cyanide concentration than that used in the plant, cyanidation with oxygen injection, cyanidation with oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and thiourea leaching. The results obtained with each of these treatments are presented and discussed with the final objective of proposing a method to recover the gold associated with tellurium.INTRODUCTION It has been demonstrated that gold telluride is refractory to the conventional cyanidation process and, for this reason, some alternative methods to recover precious metals from tellurides have been proposed. (Zhang et al., 2010). These include cyanidation with modified conditions or the use of non-cyanide leaching agents. This work presents the gold leaching results of tests performed with a sample of cyanidation tailings obtained from a Mexican deposit containing telluride species. The mine exploits a mesothermal deposit with a molar Te/Au ratio of 1, containing also lead, molybdenum, bismuth and tungsten. Gold is recovered from the ore by standard cyanidation, however, lately the gold recovery has decreased, likely due to the tellurium content of the ore. The sample used in this work was the cyanidation tailings of this deposit. It was treated in the plant by cyanide heap leaching (0.1 g/L NaCN, pH = 10.3 adjusted with lime). Some gold remained after the cyanidation and it was thought that this gold was associated with tellurium. The objective of this work was the recovery of the remaining gold from the tailings by an alternative process."

"The selective separation of palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh) from a hydrochloric acid solution by solvent extraction was investigated using amide-type extractants, i.e., N,N,N’,N’-tetra-n-octyl-thiodiglycolamide (TDGA) and N-n-hexyl-bis(N-methyl-N-n-octyl-ethylamide) amine (BisAA). The separation experiments employed two separation schemes: (1) extraction of Pd with TDGA and that of Rh and Pt with BisAA; and (2) extraction of Rh, Pd, and Pt with BisAA. Separation scheme 1 achieved the highly selective separation of each metal. For separation scheme 2, Rh can be recovered prior to Pd and Pt, despite having a lower selectivity for Pd/Pt than separation scheme 1. INTRODUCTIONThe recent increase in the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) in industry (especially auto catalysts containing palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh)) has lead to their increasing waste; therefore, improvements in the recovery techniques for PGM have received significant attention. In metal refineries, PGMs are mainly separated and purified by solvent extraction (Cox, 2004). The extraction process used in INCO’s Acton precious metal refinery is one of the most famous commercial processes and is utilized worldwide. In this process, silver is first removed as a residue (AgCl), and then gold, Pd and Pt are extracted from hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions using dibutylcarbitol (DBC), dialkylsulfide (DAS), and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), respectively. Finally, Rh remains in the raffinate (Barns & Edwards, 1982).The development of a successful solvent extraction process depends on the choice of the appropriate extractants. We have studied the extraction of PGM using N,N-disubstituted amide compounds (Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Abe, 2004; Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Tamura, 2006; Narita, Tanaka, & Morisaku, 2008a, 2008b). They are relatively stable against acids, and their metal extractability can be improved by changing the side chain length and/or introducing additional donor atoms like sulfur and nitrogen. We have recently found that thiodiglycolamide and an amide-containing tertiary amine have good extractabilities for Pd and Rh, respectively."

"IntroductionThrough an extensive coal sampling project in the Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia during 1981 - 1984 involving a majority of the mineable coals (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. 1), a sizeable inventory on trace, minor and major metals was established. In this paper, results of studying the inventory are summarized, concentrating mainly on the relationship that exists between metal variations and thickness of coal channel samples (i.e. trends) and on explaining the trends in geochemical and sedimentological terms. As an over-all conclusion the Everglades peat of Florida is proposed as a modern-day analogue to Upper Carboniferous peat swamp development that took place in the Sydney Basin.Data InventoryFor this study 17 channel samples were cut , 8 cm to 14 cm channel width and 8 cm to 10 cm depth, from 10 successive coals which in stratigraphically descending order are as follows: Point Aconi (3), overrider Lloyd Cove (2), Lloyd Cove (2), Stubbart (2), Harbour (4), Backpit (I), Phalen (,I), Shoemaker (1) and McAulay (I), where bracketed values signify the number of channel samples cut from a seam (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. I). Each channel sample was subdivided by 15 em incremental length yielding a total sample size of 137 for analysis. By appropriate modern techniques these samples were analyzed to determine concentration levels for 32 chemical elements and ash content, the average results of which are presented in Table 1.Tests were also made for Pd, Pt, Ga, Nb, Cd, Cs, Sm and W but their concentration levels in many instances hovered on the lower detection limits that were used and on this accounts are excluded from discussion. Ashing, when necessary for the determination of concentration levels, was done for 12 hours at a temperature not exceeding 450°C. Concentration levels for the elements are reported in reference to whole-coal or whole-coal equivalents and discussed on this basis. In the course of the analyses, lower detection limits received careful attention."

The knowledge of 3D velocity distribution of P- and S-waves in rocks is very important parameter for interpretation and understanding the nature of seismic anisotropy observed in the earth’s crust and upper mantle. A new high-pressure measuring head was designed and constructed to enable ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 independent directions under up to 60 MPa of acting hydrostatic pressure by means of simultaneous longitudinal and transversal sounding. New measuring system enables ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples by using a pair of P-wave sensors and two pairs of perpendicularly polarized S-wave sensors (TV and TH) see Fig.1. Shear wave sensors polarization is oriented according to rotation axis of the sample. Special shear wave gel was used to transfer shear waves between the sample and sensors under acting hydrostatic pressure. An isotropic glass sphere was used to check and calibrate the new measuring setup. A spherical sample of a biotite gneiss from the Outokumpu scientific drill hole was used for testing measurement. There is shown that both, P- and S-wave velocities, can be measured simultaneously up to 70 MPa, respectively. We report data of the 3D velocity distribution of P- and Swaves measured for the first time on a sample sphere of biotite gneiss. We rely, in particular, on the directional dependence of compressional and shear wave propagation and their relationship to the crystallographic (CPO) and shape preferred orientation (SPO) of major rock-forming minerals. The 3D seismic measurements revealed a strong foliation-related directional dependence (anisotropy) of P- and Swave velocities. Ultrasonic measurements were compared with 3D velocity calculations based on neutron diffraction measurements of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of major minerals. Comparison of 3-D velocity distribution (P, S1, S2 and S1-S2) determined by two completely different methods ultrasonic sounding and neutron diffraction is presented. Measurements showed that the intrinsic bulk anisotropy is basically caused by the CPO of biotite constituting about 23 vol.% of the rock.
