Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) have been widely used in the passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but their effectiveness has often been less than anticipated. Iron hydroxide often precipitates around limestone particles and inhibits neutralisation. To determine the conditions under which iron hydroxide precipitates, a small-scale laboratory ALD system was built to enable a detailed examination of the chemistry of iron within the drain. For one experiment, a mixture of limestone and quartz was introduced to the drain to assist in the determination of the key mechanism governing iron precipitation. Synthetic anaerobic acid mine drainage containing Fe2+ (~130 ppm), SO4 2- and H+ was pumped at a rate of 30 mL/min up a 90 cm tall, 15 cm diameter vertical column filled with limestone gravel of 98 per cent purity. Three sampling ports were fitted at equal intervals along the column; water was periodically extracted for analysis at the sampling ports over an 11-hour period. Experiments were run at influent pH levels of 2 and 4. Results show that acid neutralisation to pH greater than 6 occurred at the inflow end of the drain. The greatest amount of iron precipitation (19.5 per cent) also occurred in this area. The lack of iron precipitation on the quartz surfaces in the quartz/limestone mixture indicates that neutralisation is the key mechanism for the precipitation of iron hydroxide on limestone particles. A pe-pH stability diagram derived for the laboratory ALD system indicates that ALDs will not be effective for AMD with pH 2. Influent waters with pH 2 require a pe of -2 (Eh: -118.4 mV) to avoid Fe precipitation upon neutralisation. Influent waters of pH 4 require a pe between -2 and -4.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

Based on the blasting crater theory, the equation between k under typical cases and burden line, charge height was obtained by open pit bench blasting analysis model. The model was calculated with mine production blasting. The Victoria Park Tunnel project is an inner-city alliance project in central Auckland, New Zealand. The existing two-directional viaduct will be modified to single-direction flow, and a new northbound 440 m cut and cover tunnel will be constructed beneath Victoria Park. Three-dimensional (3D) visualisation media were used to communicate key design innovations to stakeholders and the general public. The 3D visual material has proven a useful tool for informing motorists of a new safety barrier method adopted for traffic management.This presentation will explain how 3D visualisation was incorporated in the project and will showcase the 3D visualisation media created for the project.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

Mochia mine, in culmination of depillaring operations, fired India's largest underground pillar blast consuming 145 tonnes of explosive and yielding 0.55 million tonnes of ore in June 1994. To protect main mine structures (situated at a distance of 250 to 350 m from the blast site) from resultant ground vibrations, the charge per delay was restricted to 2300 kg. The post-blast observations revealed that no damage was caused to these structures. However, the damage assessment survey of the mine workings situated in close proximity revealed a general trend in consonance with the distance from the blast and found to be well correlated with peak particle velocity.

Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. The Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola employs a Leach/Solvent Extraction/Electro- winning process and contains the largest solvent extraction plant in the world, with design liquor flow rates of 55 m3/min. A pilot plant constructed to provide design data also indi- cated areas of uncertain operating and control performance and led to a decision to model the whole circuit to determine the overall dynamic behaviour and basic operating characteristics. Details of the plant flowsheet are given and the basic physical and chemical' equations required for the simulation defined. Each unit operation is considered separately and details of the mathematical models used for their simulation presented.

Located in the north-west of Kazakhstan is a world-class podiform chromite deposit. Donskoy mining and beneficiation complex (DGOK), a branch of Kazchrome TNC, which is a subsidiary of the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) operates two underground mines in this area, one of which is the ‘10th Anniversary of Kazakhstan Independence’ (DNK) mine.The mine currently applies the gravity caving mining method, producing 1.8 Mt/a of ore utilising a slusher layout and rail transport to the hoisting shafts. The deeper zones form the largest mineral resources at the DNK mine and are planned to be developed in the next several years. At this depth, the generally poor ground conditions, combined with the high in situ stress state will potentially lead to extremely challenging mining conditions.This paper describes a technical study undertaken by SRK to determine the possibility of increasing the maximum production rate from the currently envisaged 6.0 Mt/a to 7.2 Mt/a, and to reduce the time taken to steady state production.Based on a newly created 3D model, the inclined caving method was proposed for the largest orebodies. This method, presently not implemented at any operating mine, although planned for two other projects, was deemed very suitable to deal with the weak rock mass characteristics and the plunging morphology of the mineralisation.Dassault Systèmes’ GEOVIA’s Footprint Finder software (a module of GEOVIA’s PCBC™) was used to determine the caving zones and production schedules. The total mine design was completed in Deswik software, and resulting schedules combined in Excel.In addition to the use of an inclined caving method, several other suggestions were made to increase the productivity of the mine, such as the application of a conveyor belt system transporting multiple material types, teleremote technologies and the application of thin sprayed liners to reduce the swelling of the rock mass.CITATION:Fuykschot, J J and Loewen, S M, 2016. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t Au, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5- 40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects. Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26 per cent of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77 per cent. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88 per cent, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au. Re-cyanidation of some of the dried tailings from the initial tests extracted most of the remaining gold giving a tailing assaying 0.5 g/t Au. This indicated that most of the gold was available for dissolution by cyanide. The poor dissolution of gold by cyanidation of the untreated concentrate was attributed to the presence of flotation reagents. It was shown by UV spectrometry that xanthate-containing compounds were present in the solids fraction of the original pulp and that they were partly removed by pre-treatment. MIBC was also present, and dithiophosphate, which was used in the flotation step, was also probably present. The results indicated that the improvement in gold extraction after filtration and oxidation of the original pulp was due to partial removal of the flotation reagents, and illustrates the detrimental effects that residual flotation reagents can have on the extraction of gold by cyanidation of a flotation concentration.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Southland contains over 70 per cent of New ZealandÆs recoverable coal resources, and an investigation into the potential effects of coal mining on SouthlandÆs water resources is therefore of interest. This paper investigates pit-lake water quality in relation to current mining activities within the sub-bituminous coal and lignite deposits of Southland.   Water quality data was collected from pit-lakes in sub-bituminous and lignite deposits from October 2005 to March 2006. After periods of settled weather, turbidity increased with depth at the sub-bituminous pit-lake (10 - 21 NTUs from 5 - 30 m). In the stratified sub-bituminous pit-lake in March 2006, heavy rainfall caused higher turbidity in the epilimnion than the top of the hypolimnion (20 NTU vs 13 NTU) reflecting surface water runoff (up to 1993 NTUs) and epilimnion mixing. In contrast, turbidity at the lignite sites was variable due to the shallowness of the lakes, but noticeable increases following disturbance and adverse weather were recorded. High turbidity at the sub-bituminous deposits was attributed to the presence of clay minerals such as kaolinite whereas turbidity at the lignite sites was more likely short term and a result of heavier minerals such as quartz.   Trace element concentrations at both sites were low when compared to mine waters in other coal areas in New Zealand and no samples exceeded ANZECC water quality trigger values for 80 per cent species protection. Pit-lake water pH levels were lower and more variable in the lignite deposit (4.18 - 7.30 vs 7.24 - 8.98 in the sub-bituminous deposits). In the lignite pit-lakes, higher concentrations of trace elements (eg Dissolved As - 0.034 ppm and Dissolved Mn - 1.09 ppm) and lower pH (ÿ4) were observed at the bottom of active pits compared to inactive pits. It is possible that quartz pebble conglomerates containing sulphide minerals within the lignite seams are responsible for this.   Further investigation into the mine waters, waste rock and lake sediments will help get a better understanding of the results observed and long term processes that occur.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.
