"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. A key aspect of seismic management for narrow vein stoping of the west zone at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been the development of a fully remote extraction method that does not require personnel access to sill drives within the orebody once stoping commences. Initially, sill driving within the reef is undertaken in a conventional fashion under geological control. Sill drives are developed at a vertical backs-to-floor height ranging from 7 - 12 m. This mining stage includes all activities prior to the commencement of stoping, after which no personnel enter the unstoped section of the sill drive at any time for any purpose. The key aspect of the remote mining cycle is the use of footwall drill drives paralleling the ore drive at a minimum separation of 6 m under survey control. These drives provide the platform for fan drilling of the orebody. Up to 20 m strike panels are blasted in a single shot using electronic blasting techniques. Ore is mucked from the extraction level sill drive using tele-remote loaders. Aerials for tele-remote operation are installed through boreholes from the footwall drive, negating the need for personnel access to the sill drive. Once mucking of a stoping panel is complete, a laser scanning survey instrument is used to survey the final void for subsequent design and production reconciliation purposes. The survey instrument is mounted in the bucket of the tele-remote loader, and is also operated remotely. Finally, tele-remote loaders are used to dump waste rock fill from the upper sill drive. A system of flags and cameras installed in boreholes from the footwall drive assists the operator in locating the live stope edge during the filling cycle, again negating the need for personnel access.

Today, the advance rate of underground roadway development by drill and blast operation is limited by the need to ventilate the toxic blast fumes after each cycle. In deep mines this usually is only possible during shift changes when the related mine sections are free of persons. This results in roadway development advance rates of 4 m per shift, or 12 m per day. For long roadways this is a limiting factor in mining development in deep mines. Companies like EPIROC, KOMATSU, ROBBINS and SANDVIK are making serious R&D efforts to disc-cutting mobile miners to overcome this bottleneck. However, today, the achieved advance rates are less than 12 m per day in hard rock. If we achieve full robotisation and/or teleoperation from a safe place for drill and blast operation of an underground roadway development section, we could eliminate this bottleneck. Poisonous blasting fumes do not affect robots and machines as long as these fumes do not create aggressive acids. If we can keep the blast fumes isolated in the roadway development section for the shift until the next ventilation opportunity (eg shift change or designated ventilation times), we can do the drill and blast cycle more often in a shift, which will significantly speed up the advance rate. This requires robotisation of all work steps in the section: surveying, drilling, charging of explosives, blasting, loading and transporting material, roof support, installation of infrastructure etc. Also, cache storage for the material is needed. Special care for the ventilation system to keep the blasting fumes under control in the section is necessary. The paper discusses the aspects needed to achieve this robotisation and the related technical and operational tasks.

Palabora Mining Company operates an integrated open pit mine, concentrator, smelter and refinery complex located in the Northern Province of South Africa. The Palabora open pit went into production in 1966, mining 30 000 t/d to produce some 62 000 tpa of copper. With continuous modification and improvement, a mining rate of 82 000 t/d, producing up to 135 000 tpa of refined copper, has been achieved. While these improvements have also enabled the mine life to be nearly doubled, the open pit will reach the end of its economic life by 2003. The Palabora orebody is vertical and the reserve extends to a depth of 1800 m over an area of 700 m by 200 m. Studies to assess the economics of mining the orebody by underground means began in the mid-1980s. These studies indicated that block caving is the lowest cost underground mining method that would generate a suitable return. In March 1996, a decision was made to develop a 30 000 t/d block cave mine that will extend the life of the Palabora Mining Company by a further 20 years. In terms of the relatively high rock strength and the resultant coarse fragmentation that is expected at the drawpoint, the Palabora cave can be considered rather unique when compared to other block cave operations. This paper describes the project in broad terms and details the mining method, particularly with respect to the cavability of the orebody and the design features to deal with the coarse fragmentation. The project commenced in July 1996 and final development of the undercut and drawbells is scheduled for completion in November 2003. This paper describes the status of the project and planning as of April 2000.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Pajingo gold mine produces over 240 000 oz Au per year from underground mining using longitudinal bench stoping methods with a 15 m sublevel interval. Average mine head grade is around 12 g/t Au, contained within quartz veins between 0.5 to 16 m wide. The veins dip steeply (>60¦) and exhibit strike variations which lead to many curved and meandering drive/stope geometries. Unplanned dilution at Pajingo is predominantly controlled by fault planes that subparallel the vein and commonly lead to slabbing failure from the stope walls. Initial efforts at determining maximum spans were based on using the Stability Graph method of stope stability. However the method had a number of shortcomings that did not address mine site observations, including previous mining, interaction of different joint sets and the presence of discrete shears which resulted in poor prediction of stability. A method was developed to rate the risk of dilution for a stope based on observations made in the ore drives. The method utilises profile mapping of the ore drive, structural features observed and the orebody itself, on 10 m spaced sections along the ore drive. A matrix of factors determines the dilution risk for stoping at the time of mapping and the rating is transferred to longsection plots in the office. The dilution risk rating is used to determine the position and density of cable bolt support aimed at lessening the risk, and can be used to review blasthole designs prior to finalisation. The method has been used for more than two years and has proven to be a good indicator of potential unplanned dilution (ie waste outside of ring design). A recent review of the dilution risk mapping process has indicated it is assisting in reducing the impact of dilution at the operation and has the scope to be utilised further in the design process.

The placement of sulfidic waste below the groundwater table ensures limited interaction with the hydrosphere and suppression of sulfide oxidation. However, if sulfidic waste is placed above the groundwater table and remains uncovered, the backfill becomes part of the unsaturated zone and is exposed to atmospheric oxygen and leaching. This study aims to establish the leaching behaviour of sulfidic waste placed above the groundwater table and the impact of such leachate on the local aquifer at the Thalanga base metal mine. Mining of the Thalanga copper-lead-zinc deposit resulted in a large final mining void (600 m + 150 m + 70 m) and extensive underground workings. The underground workings were partly filled with tailings and the open pit was partly backfilled with acid producing sulfidic waste rock. In addition, the pit serves as a sink for acidic run-off from adjacent waste rock piles and mine workings. To date, the backfill of sulfidic waste rock placed into the pit has not been capped with benign materials and for most of the dry season, the surface of the backfill is covered by melanterite-type efflorescences. Results of kinetic column leach experiments conducted on the sulfidic waste indicate that Cd, Cu, Zn and SO4 rich waters migrate from the backfilled sulfidic waste into the local unconfined aquifer. However, the seepage of alkaline (pH 7.3 - 8.0), high conductivity (>10 000 ¦S/cm) tailings waters into the remaining pit void clearly shows that the acid leachate originating from the sulfidic waste rock does not impact beyond the waste repository and its immediate environment. Geochemical modelling implies that minimal or no mixing occurs between the acid waste rock leachate and the alkaline tailings waters.

The Mount Isa mine in North West Queens- land produces a total of nearly 10 million t/yr from separate copper and silver lead zinc orebodies. Sampling information is mainly obtained from diamond drilling on 30 to 40 metre centers in both types of orebodies. For the copper orebodies the majority of the core is analysed for copper content using a non-destructive bulk analyser developed by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. The diamond drill core in the silver lead zinc orebodies is usually sam- pled as sawn half core and assayed in the com- pany laboratory using a variety of methods dependent upon the level of metal content and/or the elements required. Underground development is sampled where additional information is required to improve the ore reserve estimate. The copper areas are sampled using a standard 2.0 m by 2.0 m chip sample of the wall. The chips are taken on a 250 mm spacing. Lead areas are sampled using a 100 mm wide by 4 mm deep channel over intervals determined by the area geologists. The massive, irregularly shaped copper ore bodies are mined as large sublevel open stopes and pillars. Ore reserve estimation on both a production unit and global scale is routinely carried out using a geostatistical system developed in-house and running on a Sperry 1100 mainframe computer. Copper grade, tonnes and the Kriging var- iance are estimated at points on a user defined grid. The Kriging program uses 10 m assay composites from diamond drill core and underground chip samples. One average (rela- tive) variogram is used throughout the main copper orebodies. The validity of using an average variogram was verified by the original geostatistical study undertaken in the late 1970's.

Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

The Wongawilli system of mining has been in use for over 30 years and has enabled high production rates and acceptable extraction ratios to be achieved in seams less than 4 m in thickness. A modification of the Wongawilli system has been developed to permit the use of a continuous miner and mobile equipment to extract a coal seam 6 m thick. Following physical and mathematical model studies the new mining method is now undergoing field trials at Collinsville, Queensland. Progress of the field trials to date has achieved 99 per cent extraction of the upper slice by remote control operation of the continuous miner and established the feasibility of installing resin grouted wooden dowels in the coal floor to reinforce the coal septum. The method is explained in the text. Monitoring of the goaf gases as an early indication of spontaneous combustion has been incorporated in the mining cycle by placement of tubes in the goaf as the face retreats and continuous analysis of the goaf gases made at the surface by the National Coal Board tube bundle monitoring system.

Two Hg-Au occurrences west of Bangko, Sumatra occur within the West Sumatra Permian Volcanic Plutonic Arc. The Melipun Hg-Au occurrence was exploited in the past and mineralisation occurs within a hydrothermally altered cupola of a buried intrusion. The Salak Hg-Au occurrence occurs within the outcrop of the Dusunbaru pluton, likely within the remnants of a caldera in which hydrothermal mineralisation was developed. Both occurrences formed late in the history of the volcanic arc, probably between the Triassic and early Jurassic. This paper describes the test work, process design, commissioning and operation of a processing system at the Ergo gold operation that improves the extraction efficiency from gold tailings material. The improvement in recovery is derived from the separation of the gold contained within the sulfides of the tailings material and a dedicated process stream to recover that gold.The sulfides are separated by means of a flotation circuit and that resulting concentrate is subjected to a regrind of below 20 ¦m to enable a greater liberation of the gold. The ultra-fine material is then subjected to a dedicated leach circuit to recover the now exposed gold particles.The case study is an example of the challenges of introducing new technology and methodologies to a well-established operation and thereby attaining improved efficiencies and tangible business benefits.CITATION:Ebell, M B and Capstick, D, 2013. The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.
