The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Kaiser Steel Corporation conducted two methane drainage studies in an advancing section of the Sunnyside No. I Mine where production was being severely hampered by methane emissions. A total of six horizontal aoreholes were completed during the studies to an average length of 291 meters. Total gas production from the boreholes as of December 1981 has exceeded 6,088,800 m3. Methane emissions into the section were reduced by 40 pct as a result of the first drainage system. The second drainage system is currently producing 11,328 m3/day from four Doreholes. Mining of the section and cementing of the horizontal horeholes is expected to begin within 2 Years.

The 'MAGNADET' to provide a safe enhanced protection extraneous currents, electricity and radiodetonator was designed electric detonator with against the effects of current leakage, static frequency energy.It has found a particular niche in shaft sinking operations and Mount Isa Mines initiated trials of the system in 1983 as part of the design work for the 3000/3500 orebody access shaft.Initial surface blasts indicated a number of significant advantages which were confirmed during the bench and concrete phase of the M37 shaft sink. The application of 'MAGNADETS' was later extended to the horadiam phase of the project.Details of the exploder capacity calculations for the various M37 round designs are included with the paper.

Discontinuities often have a very detrimental effect on the stability of mine highwall faces. The west wall of the Muja open cut is remarkable for the number and variety of discontinuity sets which occur over a relatively small area. To-date 14 separate structural domains have been identified over an area measuring approximately 560 m by 120 m.The structural domains have been grouped into four structural assemblages on the basis of their angular relationships to each other and to regional folding and faulting. The distribution of these structural assemblages appears to be erratic and no controlling factors have been identified to explain or predict them other than in the most generalised terms.

Rock mechanics investigations have shown that some major slopes in the Panguna pit would be stable at angles in excess of 500 providing near-surface instability could be controlled. Excavation of final batters at angles between 55¦ and 60¦ is now being carried out using D10 dozers with berms at 45 to 60 m centres. A trial slope with berms at 90 m centres is planned. Shotcreting of weak zones combined with crest reinforcement, with rock anchors and dowels, is used to provide protection against erosion and toppling of the crests. Overall slopes excavated in this way are of the order of 10¦ steeper than slopes obtained by blast and shovel excavation.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

Graded macadam slag base has been used successfully by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W., in the construction of Expressways. However, the use of graded macadam in urban conditions introduces problems which can be avoided by the use of material meeting the specification outlined in M.R. Form 744. This paper outlines the rationale behind the technical requirements of the specification for the "Supply of natural gravel or crushed rock for road pavement (bitumen surfaced) M.R. Form 744". A blend of materials produced from slag is proposed as a potential solution for the production of slag base which would be suitable for use in urban construction or maintenance of roads.

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with sodium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is boiled with concentrated nitric acid and then 2 ml. of a phosphotungstate solution are added. After dilution to 10 ml. with water, the solution is heated in a boiling water-bath for not less than 10 min. When cold, the solution is extracted with 2 ml. of iso-amyl alcohol and the yellow phosphotungstovanadate complex is compared with a standard series. Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 samples per man-day of 8 hr.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. Slab-buckle failures in coal sequences involve thin slab deformation in strata dipping parallel to the footwall, and are a consequence of both unloading and the weak nature of the thinly bedded rock mass. Methods of modelling and predicting such occurrences include: +        a conceptual model using a base friction table, +        a mathematical model using the Euler solution for column and beam bending (after Goodman, 1980), and +        computer analysis techniques such as UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code after Cundall and Hart, 1993).   Slab-buckle failures have the potential to seriously disrupt production because of their volume and rapidity, and to endanger both equipment and personnel working on the pit floor.   In July 2004 a large slab-buckle failure occurred overnight after a new batter and bench had been formed at the Malvern Hills Opencast Mine in inland Canterbury. This involved the entire length of the pit (85m along strike) when a 2m thick intact slab with a total volume of ~3500m3 translated down dip 6.2m on the base of a thin coal seam to form a pronounced buckle at the toe. The coal measures consist of finely laminated mudrocks with multiple coal seams of varying thickness dipping ~45¦ to the southeast, and the opencast mine had been designed with footwall batters formed parallel to bedding with a vertical bench separation of 15m.   Back analysis of the Malvern Hills failure was necessary to investigate the controls on footwall instability, and for future mine design. An engineering geological model was created and samples of the slab material and failure surface were collected and tested to establish the required parameters for use in the Euler solution for column and beam bending. Back analysis using the Euler solution provided unrealistic results that overestimated the overall length of a stable slope by more than 10 times.   No further large scale slab-buckle failures have developed at the mine site, in part because of the slow rate of coal extraction, but precautionary drainage of the footwall slopes has been undertaken to improve overall batter stability. The location of the slab-buckle failure on a critically positioned pre-sheared thin coal seam with full hydrostatic head is considered the most probable cause of the July 2004 failure, rather than inherent instability of the generic bench and batter arrangement adopted. The use of a precedent-based engineering geology approach to future mine design is considered the most appropriate solution in the circumstances.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation: W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

"This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. Circuits with unconventional and potentially more complex designs are predicted to become more common in the future as plant designers and operators look to process ores more efficiently. Ideas have been presented on how circuit design may be changed to utilise todayÆs technology to address tomorrowÆs challenges (Powell and Bye, 2009; Powell, Benzer and Mainza, 2011a). High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) installations in various configurations; application of preconcentration plants eg sorting, magnetic or gravity separation; and preweakening devices eg microwave processing; are all examples of technologies having the potential to deliver a significant reduction in comminution energy for ores amenable to these processes. Not only will future novel circuits contain equipment for which models are not as well developed (if at all), many will likely require the ability to respond to variations in feed, and interact with geometallurgical models requiring process adjustments when the ore characteristics change.In order to confidently simulate more complex circuits and accommodate variations in feed type, a significant advancement in modelling and simulation capability is required. This includes dealing with multiple components in the feed, accommodating different competencies of ore, utilising physical separation opportunities and tracking the grade reporting along the different potential processing routes. Developing the means to simulate complex circuits has been a key priority of a collaborative group of comminution researchers working to solve these challenges.Simulations are presented utilising a new configurable simulation interface called the model developers kit (MDK). The MDK is designed to accommodate multi-components and incorporate new models under development. The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.
