A synthetic gold-silver telluride material (mainly sylvanite) has been prepared and its physical and chemical properties checked. Flotation tests using a Hallimond tube were conducted using commercial xanthate collectors. At collector concentrations of 10-3M with the addition of 5 × 10-4 M CUS04, no obvious differences in the mineral recoveries were seen irrespective of whether amyl, secbutyl, isobutyl or isopropyl xanthates were used. However, when the concentration of xanthate was reduced to 10-4 M or in the absence of the copper sulphate activator, the effectiveness of the collectors was in the order: amyl > secbutyl > isobutyl > isopropyl > ethyl. Changes in the slurry pH appeared to have little effect on the recovery of the telluride mineral.Leaching tests of the precious metal telluride showed that both gold and silver dissolve in alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions but at a much lower dissolution rate than metallic gold or silver. Both leaching tests and electrochemical measurements indicate that the dissolution rate of gold-silver telluride is controlled by the pH and cyanide concentration of the leachant.Roasting the gold-silver telluride materials in air at temperatures between 550 and 750°C resulted in its decomposition into a metallic gold-silver alloy and tellurium dioxide.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

Underground mining of gold-silver bearing quartz lodes was carried out in the great mines at Martha Hill, Waihi over 70 years from 1882 until 1952. Shafts and stopes reached a total depth of 600 m on 16 levels, with workings extending laterally some 1.6 km, and as new reefs were discovered the workings extended beneath parts of the township. Over their long life the mines produced 1217 tonnes of gold-silver bullion from processing 12.2 million tonnes of mined ore. In the early-1980s drilling proved large reserves of gold and silver ore remaining in stock-work zones between the previously mined lodes. This led to a new era of mining at Waihi with the opening of the Martha Hill open pit in 1988. A series of three sink holes have formed above unfilled stopes of the Royal lode. In 1999 a sudden collapse crater 40 m in diameter occurred near an occupied part of Waihi, placing in danger several houses and a busy street. This crater formed close to a similar crater that occurred in 1961. The 1999 collapse resulted in subsurface investigations and risk assessment studies being commissioned by the local Hauraki District Council. However, a further 50 m diameter collapse crater in December 2001 formed in a residential area, swallowing and wrecking an occupied house, fortunately without injuring its five occupants. Two other houses were perched on the crater rim. The 2001 collapse led to an acceleration of the work being carried out by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd. (GNS) to identify the extent of the old underground workings at Waihi. For the risk assessment detailed rock mechanics analyses were made to consider the stability of the underground mine stopes, in terms of the stope back, hangingwall, footwall and crown pillar failure mechanisms, as well as void migration. The collapse crater areas were analysed using using several methods, including analysis to simulate the probability of void migration from unfilled stopes to the surface using the @Risk program. The analyses show that in the cases of the actual collapse craters, the voids have a high probability of migrating to the surface, thus providing a method of testing the void migration modelling. Modelling analysis applied to the remaining stopes of the old underground mines show there are further areas where void migration from unfilled stopes has a high, medium and low probability of reaching the surface as a collapse crater. The locations of these probabilistic hazard zones were outlined using the @Risk modelling and deterministically by using the dimensions of the historical collapses applied along the length of the stopes. Consideration of the æincubation periodÆ (the time interval between the cessation of mining and the occurrence of collapse) and comparisons with mine subsidence histories overseas, indicates that further collapses are likely to occur over the next 50 years. Risk assessment estimates made using property values and occupancy levels within the three hazard zones, were compared with Societal and Individual Risk criteria. Results indicate that safety within the high and medium zones may be unacceptable.

A clay-capping trial was established in 1996 on Magazine Dump at the Mt Lyell Copper Mine. The trial was initially constructed under the Mount Lyell Remediation Research and Demonstration Program, a co-operative venture between the State and Federal governments. The detailed engineering design for the clay cover included the following features; reshaping and compaction of dump batters, 5 m vertical bench interval, overall side-slopes of 2.5:1, emplacement of clay in four 150 mm lifts, compaction by a 10 t vibrating roller or ætrack rollingÆ on batters with density testing for quality control. A small section at the base of the dump ( The trial also generated certain unexpected findings. Field permeability tests on the cover yielded uncertain results and oxygen remains available throughout the dump. The flow data indicate that, while total outflow has decreased as a result of storm shedding, inputs from groundwater and batter infiltration are still significant. Outflow during the driest weeks of the year may have risen following capping. Detailed assessment of the data is hampered by insufficient pre-capping information; however, there is a possibility that conductivity flux emitted when flows in the receiving environment are at their annual minimum is unchanged or worse post-capping.

Systematic near-field vibration monitoring of stope blasts was carried out in a large, deep underground mine. A total of 31 production blasts were studied in order to investigate the effectiveness of existing blast designs. This involved the vertical retreat mining method, which requires drilling a raise bore or blasting a slot raise (typically 1.22 m in diameter) using large diameter boreholes (165 mm). The diagnostic technique employed multistation near-field monitoring of blasts with high-g (100 g) and high-frequency (>10 kHz) triaxial accelerometers. The amplitude of the vibrations is correlated with the strain energy transmitted from each explosive deck. The results showed that more than 30 per cent of the explosive decks contributed little energy to the rock breakage process in these blasts, and an equal number contributed only inadequately. These findings are indicative of serious blast malfunctions. The problems can be traced to inadequate deck blast design and possibly to drill hole deviation. The various causes for such malfunctions are discussed and remedial measures suggested.CITATION:Mohanty, B and Zwaan, D, 2015. This paper will describe the exploration project which led to the discovery of the La Escondida porphyry copper deposit in northern Chile and will serve as companion paper to the description of the geology of Escondida being presented by J M Ojeda. The author would like to express his appreciation to Robert Hickman, Chairman of Minera Escondida, for permission to present this paper.In July 1978, a proposal was made by J D Lowell to Robert Wheaton, then Exploration Manager of Utah International, that Utah fund a "grass roots" program exploring for porphyry copper deposits in northern Chile. Wheaton expressed interest, and it was agreed that Getty Oil Co also be invited to participate. A joint venture agreement for the Atacama Exploration Project was signed January 1, 1979, between Utah, Getty and Lowell. The project was managed by Lowell who reported to a management committee which through most of the project consisted of Lowell, Francisco Ortiz, Robert Wheaton, Maurice Young, Sigfried Muessig and Louis Rove. Oliver Warin and Jim Bratt participated in the committee in the last phase of the contract. Special thanks are due Louis Rove of Getty and Maurice Young of Utah who made contributions throughout the course of the project. Francisco Ortiz was resident manager through most of the project.

Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

The prevalent strategic approach in the mining industry is one of planning. However, it is widely recognised that planning does not work in complex and uncertain situations (Mintzberg, 1994), such as those associated with ‘above ground’ non-technical orebody complexity (Trench, Packey and Sykes, 2014). Mintzberg, Ahlstrand and Lampel (2009) suggest the focus instead should be on strategic ‘thinking and doing’ and using the many ways to think about strategy to make sense of complex, uncertain, and unique situations. They therefore place great value in cognitive flexibility. Scenarios development utilizes several different thinking styles and thus assists with this type of flexible strategic thinking (Figure 1). The ‘Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) Scenarios’ were developed with the ‘Oxford Scenario Planning Approach’ (OSPA) (Ramírez and Wilkinson, 2016). The OSPA aims more to improve the thinking skills of decision makers, rather than forecasting per se (Wack, 1985a, 1985b). As such, this paper focuses less on the content of the scenarios and instead on the practical value of scenarios in strategizing. Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

At the Huasco Pellet Plant of Compa±fa de Aceros del Pacffico, Chile, the production of iron concentrate suitable for pellet feed from a low-grade iron ore was technically evaluated. In this study, three treating schemes including comminution, magnetic concentration and flotation in pneumatic cells were tested. The best results were obtained at the laboratory scale by flotation technique using Lilaflot D 817 M as the collector without using any depressant. The operational parameters were determined including pneumatic flotation, and three circuits, two including magnetic pre-concentration, with the low-grade iron ore. The best results were obtained by size reduction at 80 per cent under 325 Tyler mesh, three steps of magnetic concentration and three steps of flotation in pneumatic cells. The magnetic concentrate contained 63.02 per cent of iron and 6.6 per cent of silica, and after the pneumatic flotation the iron content increased up to 70.18 per cent and silica decreases to 1.07 per cent with 78.78 per cent of iron recovery at a weight recovery of 31.89 per cent. Therefore, it is possible to use low-grade iron ore to produce pellet feed from magnetic concentrates by using reverse iron flotation in pneumatic cells.

Separation of leach residue suspended solids from pregnant liquor solution is an important step in hydrometallurgy flowsheets. Alternative flowsheet options are counter-current decantation (CCD) thickeners or counter current washing (CCW) horizontal belt vacuum filters. Extensive sedimentation and vacuum filtration simulations have been completed by FLSmidth on leach discharge slurries to indentify equipment capacity and performance. These data were used to compare Capex and Opex for CCD versus CCW alternatives. In addition, Capex and Opex for large horizontal belt vacuum filters with filtration areas greater than 250m2 are compared to current state of the art sizes of 150m2. This paper presents this information and discusses various advantages and disadvantages.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

The combination of shot-firing and stage loader, and a prop and bar support system is an accepted drivage method. The support configuration is based on the final prop density, and assumes relitively uniform load sharing between the props. During the development of a longwall faceline at a medium depth (approximately 600m) British coal mine using such a drivage method, a fall occured overnight, effectively closing approximately 40m of the drivage. The severity and speed of the fall prompted an investigation into the performance of the temporary support system installed prior to chock installation. This paper deals with the investigation which disclosed some major contributory factors towards loss of strata control.
